Good Enough
Summary: Requested by anonymous, Sweet Pea with a plus sized reader with anxiety. Warnings: Anxiety, self deprecating speech, mild panic attack Pairing: Sweet Pea (Riverdale) x Reader Word Count: 1915 Rating: T
Tumblr media
A smile played on your lips as you listened to the story that Sweet Pea told, sitting across from him in your booth at Pop’s. He was talking about something that had happened with him and Fangs earlier that day, speaking in an animated motion as he retold it all.
You giggled softly, shaking your head at him. Despite his hard exterior and bad boy reputation, once you had got to know him, he never failed to make you laughed, and you were so thankful to whatever higher power it was that had brought him to you.
You loved Sweet Pea more than anyone else in the world. In a short amount of time, he’d become your person. Half of your whole. If there was anyone who could talk you down and bring you back from the edge when you were having a hard time, it was him. You were totally and completely in awe of him and just how good he always managed to make you feel.
As he finished his story, he smiled wide, his fingers playing with yours over the table as you waited for your food. Seemingly on cue, your server came and dropped off your milkshakes and fries moments later. You removed the paper from one end of your straw, bringing it to your lips and blowing into it. With the puff of air, the paper flew off of the straw and across the table, hitting Sweet Pea between the eyes, causing you to giggle.
He narrowed his eyes playfully at you, unwrapping his own straw. Rolling the paper between his fingers, he playfully flicked it at you. “You’re lucky you’re cute,” he teased you, giving you a little smirk.
You giggled again, shaking your head. Sticking your straw into your milkshake, you took a long sip from it before grabbing a few fries. You dipped one into your milkshake, eyes scanning the diner as you heard some laughter and commotion coming from the opposite corner.
Your eyes locked onto the source of all of the noise after a moment — Reggie Mantle and Chuck Clayton. You took the fry that you’d previously dipped into your milkshake into your mouth as they laughed at something over at their table.
They’re laughing at you.
It didn’t make any sense, sure. It was way more likely that the guys were laughing at something amongst themselves. Who’s to say that they had even noticed you were there? Still, you felt a slight sinking feeling in your stomach as you continued to look in their direction, Chuck’s eyes eventually moving across the diner and catching yours, a smirk spreading over his features as he caught you staring.
It wouldn’t have been the first time that you had been laughed at for the way you looked. Even in the current times with so many advocates for body positivity, it was still hard at times to see yourself as anything except the horrible names that you’d been called.
“Y/N,” you heard Sweet Pea calling, hand waving as he tried to catch your attention, finally bringing you out of your thoughts.
“Sorry,” you mumbled. “I zoned out a little.”
“I’d say so,” he said, letting out a little laugh. “Did you hear anything that I just said?”
Shaking your head, you gave him an apologetic smile, waiting for him to repeat himself.
“I was saying that me, Fangs and Toni were thinking about going to Sweetwater River to swim this weekend. Did you want to come with?” he asked, tilting his head curiously.
You bit down on your lip in the center, thinking it over. It wouldn’t be the first time that Sweet Pea had seen you in that little amount of clothing — he’d actually seen you in nothing at all. Still, you’d be somewhat publicly wearing a swimsuit, and that made you nervous.
“Can I think about it and let you know?” you asked him, shifting a bit nervously.
Sweet Pea squeezed your hand, giving you a little smile, “Of course, princess. Just let me know by that day and we can ride together.”
“Okay,” you nodded, returning his small smile.
You hated the way that you’d allowed Chuck and his group of friends laughing to make you feel self-conscious. You knew deep down that their laughter had nothing to do with you, but you hadn’t quite managed to convinced the little voices inside your head of the same thing.
You went back to eating your fries, dipping another into your milkshake every now and then, enjoying the mix of sweet and salty flavors. At one point, Sweet Pea even took a fry of his own and dipped it into your shake, causing you to smile over at him.
As time went on, you continued to hear Chuck and Reggie’s group laughing loudly. You turned your eyes down toward the table, trying to block it all out. Still, the harder that you tried to block the laughter out, the louder it seemed to ring in your ears.
Your heart beat sped up, breathing becoming a bit more labored as you fought to keep yourself from panicking, pushing your basket of fries away from you.
“Babe? You okay?” Sweet Pea asked, seeing the expression on your features and the way you’d pushed your unfinished food away. “Are you feeling sick?”
Concern was evident on his face, and instead of responding, you just nodded, letting out a little whimper as embarrassment coursed through you. You ducked your head down a bit, resting your elbows on the table and covering your face with your hands.
“Okay, hold on for me just a minute. I’ll get the check and we can go,” he spoke, pushing up from the booth and moving toward the counter.
Once Sweet Pea stood and moved toward the counter, there wasn’t anything to distract you from the laughter that seemed to continuously pour from Chuck and Reggie, your breathing becoming more labored and more erratic.
They’re laughing at you. They think you’re a slob, and now you’re freaking out about it. You’re such a headcase.
The thoughts swirled maliciously around your head, and you tore yourself from the booth, darting outside. Once you were out of the diner, your back pressed against the brick wall, leaning down to put your hands against your knees as you tried to catch your breath. Soon, you had started pacing.
Sweet Pea’s still in the diner. He knows what they think. He agrees. You don’t deserve him.
You whimpered as you fought to catch your breath, pushing your hair back from your face as tears stained your cheeks.
It was at that time that Sweet Pea walked out of the diner, grabbing you by the arms to still you. “Y/N? Talk to me… baby, breathe,” he instructed, trying to talk you down.
You started to try and do as he said, hands resting on his sides as he gripped your arms. Your fingers gripped his jacket, clinging to him tightly.
Pulling you into his arms, Sweet Pea’s confusion was that much more evident as you let out a single sob, fingers gripping his jacket for dear life. “Hey… hey, Y/N, it’s okay. I’ve got you… I’ve got you.”
Your eyes closed, forehead resting against his shoulder. As he held onto you, you slowly began to come down from your panic, though you continued to hold onto him, not ready to let him go just yet.
Sweet Pea’s hand stroked over your hair as he continued to whisper reassurances against your ear, and letting out a shaky breath, you finally found it within yourself to pull away, looking up at him.
His thumbs moved to gently wipe the tears from your eyes, and you could see just how confused and worried that he was for you. “Are you okay?” he asked, head tilting a bit.
Your hands rested against his chest, keeping him close, but still at a safe distance as you looked up at him. “Why do you like me?” you questioned him.
His brow furrowed and he looked at you curiously, “What?”
“Why do you like me?” you repeated.
Sweet Pea frowned softly, unsure of what your motive here was. Minutes ago, things were going great, but now it seemed the atmosphere had shifted. “I don’t know… everything? You’re smart, and funny. You get along with my friends, and you don’t judge us for who we are or the life that we lead.”
You nodded slowly. All of that was nice, but none of that included anything about your looks. You could feel your heart sink a bit as you bit down on the inside of your cheek. “Anything else?” you pressed.
His eyes narrowed with confusion, “Y/N, what is this about?” he asked.
“I just want to know. Why date the fat and ugly unpopular girl when you can get basically any girl you want? You could do so much better,” you shrugged.
“Babe…” he started shaking his head. “First of all, you’re not fat. Are you skinny? No, but that doesn’t mean you’re fat. Thick, full-figured, curvy, yeah. But, I would never think of you as fat.”
“Also, don’t you for one minute let yourself think that you’re ugly. You are the most beautiful girl that I know, whether you believe it or not. The other girls that you’re talking about? They’re not for me. They don’t even come close to you,” he spoke.
You shook your head, wiping at your eyes, “Pea, you could have so much better.”
Sweet Pea shook his head stubbornly, “Are you not listening to me? I choose you. I want you. I love you.”
The words had slipped out before he had realized he said them, so as you stood in front of him, looking at him incredulously, he was a bit confused. It wasn’t until a moment later that he realized what he’d said. “Oh shit,” he murmured, though there was a hint of a smile on his lips and he let out a small laugh.
“That’s the first time you’ve ever told me that,” you spoke, voice soft as you looked up at him.
Sweet Pea nodded, biting down on his lip, “Yeah… I didn’t mean for it to come out that way. I — I wanted for it to be a little more special,” he shrugged.
You shook your head, stepping closer to him again. Standing on tip-toe, you wrapped your arms around his neck again, pulling him down into a kiss.
Sweet Pea returned the kiss with ease, his arms wrapping securely around you, holding you tightly. It was like you were cage in against him with nowhere to go, and somehow it made you feel that much more safe and secure than ever before.
Pulling your lips from his after a few moments, you breathed out and rested your forehead against his, hoping that this was all real. The last thing that you wanted was for this to all be a dream. Blinking a few times, you looked up at him, giving him a soft smile.
“I love you too,” you told him. “Thank you… for being so amazing to me.”
Sweet Pea smiled as you said that you loved him too, shaking his head as you thanked him. “You don’t have to thank me for that. It’s what you deserve. And if anyone ever gives you any shit, just let me know. No one fucks with my girl,” he told you, pulling you in for another kiss.

Tips For a Successful Thanksgiving Eat-A-Thon • Notice the ‘eat-a-thon’ descriptor; it’s not a sprint — pace yourself. You’ll likely be eating all day, so plan for it by picking smaller than you ‘want’ portions for pre-meal festivities — you can always go back. • Eat a healthy, nutrient dense breakfast — don’t go into the day hungry — the meal is likely to be carb heavy, so have some good protein and veggies and a little fruit for breakfast. Don’t forget some nut or avocado fat for longer satiation. • Workout or go for a walk in the morning, as well as after the meal but before dessert — keeping that body in motion will go a long way towards not feeling the thanksgiving slump — just don’t forget your mask! • Plan on going back for seconds and even thirds on the big meal — knowing this, take smaller portions the first and second time. Likely you won’t even be hungry for that third helping; you may even be satisfied by the first reasonably portioned helping! • Plan ahead to take home some left-overs — help remove feeling pressured to get all that great food at once. • Make sure to get that post-dinner stroll in before dessert — this will aid in digestion and will add movement to your day. • If possible, have coffee or tea BEFORE dessert instead of after. This will also aid with digestion and will encourage smaller portions of that pumpkin or pecan pie. • Most importantly, remember to be grateful for everything you have. So many folks this year are missing loved ones at their table because of covid. If you’re missing folks to keep them safe, say thanks that you have that opportunity. Remember that so many people’s hearts are broken this Thanksgiving because they’ve lost their loved ones in this painful year. Keep these people in your hearts as you say thanks and enjoy the wonderful blessings that this holiday reminds us to appreciate. Even if it’s surrounding a computer screen. Will Kundalini Awaken If You Consume Animals?
Will it stunt the access to higher consciousness, dimensions, and ascension process?
Here I have compiled very interesting and insightful perspectives:
-
• We know that Native American tribes have and most indigenous tribe are paleo based. The natives which I’ve heard from my historical backtracking, always give gratitude and honor for the life they consume but I think it was mainly in times of scarcity. As you may remember in school or researched, before take over by Columbus there was an incredible abundance of cattle which were all slaughtered even for fun by the Columbus crew :(
Jason Lamonte: honor and love, thank the spirit of anything you consume or inhale for allowing you to take in its energy to heal yourself with, so you may better aid in healing others with the same energy. Any “toxins” or “poisons” even radiation can be transmuted through spirit alchemy. Free the soul of the animal you consume if you do eat meat, make an affirmation prior and bless the animal for giving its life, and make a pact that it’s spirit and soul is liberated from the lower planes upon your consumption of it. :) Do as thou wilt
Noah Gambescia: Vegetarianism/veganism isnt a prerequisite for ascension, growth or enlightenment. It does help the process but isnt an absolute prerequisite That being said its encouraged to stop or reduce red meat and pork, the least damaging meats are chicken and fish
Stanislav Daganov: Noah, what’s the big difference between mammals and birds?
Noah Gambescia: I had a hard time believing it at first but I’ve been told more than once by higher dimensional beings that small birds and fish dont actually have souls. Like they have a consciousness, naturally, but not an individual self-aware fractal of God source that has its own identity and memories of past lives. For instance a chicken or salmon will not reincarnate after death, they are extensions of nature, living beings but not avatars inhabited by a soul and higher self.
Mammals however have souls, so pork and cows and such. As far as small birds and fish are concerned, no individual souls, theyre essentially biological robots
So while its better to eat no meat altogether, at least with chicken and seafood youre not eating a fellow soul which is essentially spiritual cannibalism. Beware of GMO poultry and seafood
-
• I have felt like this as well, This is what it seems to be like with pidgeons and fishbin my current resonating perception. But idk.
Dån Trîfan: I had my experience 2 weeks after quitting meat for the first time. I’m sure it had a lot to do with it. Haven’t touched flesh since.
-
-
-
Gabriel Grey: I’ve tried to give up meat but it makes me really weak/sick feeling after awhile. I still consume poultry/fish, and have drastically cut back on red meats and pork. I never noticed a difference in spirituality/kundalini based off of my diet, but everybody works alittle differently
• We must take into account always, the biochemical individual metabolic types we have, ethnic primal pattern dieting (see Paul Chek’s data) we may need to cycle on having meat sometimes.
-
Clayton Masterson: Eating animals with highly developed emotional systems will indeed slow down spiritual progress. Fish and eggs seem to be fine, but make sure the eggs are cage free, and free range if possible.
Well as there is no way to measure spirit period, I would say no, there is no really objective criteria, but it has been my personal experience and that of many others which seems to verify it. From my experience it has to do with the suffering of the animal that one takes on into ones own spirit when consuming most animal flesh.
I would say that this does not apply to traditional hunting and gathering people as they live in harmony with their ecology, and they are part of a single unit.
-
Mark Amaru Pinkham: A vegetarian diet has been promoted by the ancients because it is the most “sattvic” and readily assists transformation. Such a diet assists the seeker from becoming too rajasic - too worldly and aggressive - and it also moves and awakens energy, including the Kundalini. However, many Enlightened Ones have reached their goal with a diet that includes meat. If you live in a northern, cold climate, consuming meat might become essential to stay warm and healthy. But such a diet will not prevent Kundalini awakening or the process of alchemical transformation.
• Sattvic diet is meant to include food and eating habit that is “pure, essential, natural, vital, energy-containing, clean, conscious, true, honest, wise”.[2][3]
Sattvic diet is a regimen that places emphasis on seasonal foods, fruits, dairy products, nuts, seeds, oils, ripe vegetables, legumes, whole grains, and non-meat based proteins.[4] Some Sattvic diet suggestions, such as its relative emphasis on dairy products, is controversial.[5]
Sattvic diet is sometimes referred to as yogic diet in modern literature. In ancient and medieval era Yoga literature, the concept discussed is Mitahara, which literally means “moderation in eating”.[4][6] (Wikipedia)
-
• Yes, I believe it is all about balance. Awakenings, enlightened ones (lol) have reached their goals via balance. Adaptation, being truly in tune, not identified with the lower attachments to satisfy pleasure, not emanating from an imbalance such as emotional eating. Love this info on the Ayurvedic perspective. I also live in a colder climate perhaps meat is a staple right now for maintenance in this environment. The Eskimo’s thrive off tons of meat and animal fats. (My own consumption is relatively small when it comes to meats. As a bodybuilder I typically get my protein source from eggs and whey proteins, hydrolized/isolates. A bodybuilding diet style will help anyone become refined and tuned into what their body really needs and when it needs it. Moreover, sungazing + sleeping on the Earth will tune on faster :)

Here are awesome words from internationally renowned expert in corrective & high performance exercise kinesiology, holistic Health coach Paul Chek:
I became a vegetarian for the second time a few years ago when my soul guided me to remove all fish, meat, and eggs from my diet. I was guided to eat that way for exactly one year to the day.
This process helped me:
1. Deeply clean myself 2. Develop greater intuitive clarity 3. Evolve in my practices as a shaman 4. Practice what I preach, let go of any dogma, and trust that my soul only knows Love and Truth. 5. Study the effects of a vegetarian diet on my body and mind, and how that diet affected workouts like heavy weight training and rock lifting. I learned so much about myself:
I had to eat a significantly increased amount of beans and legumes. My body also wanted a lot of nuts that previously gave me intolerance reactions. I noticed that when I was a vegetarian, I could eat many things that I couldn’t eat while also eating meat.
I found it MUCH harder to keep muscle mass on. Hard workouts took a noticeably longer time for me to recover from (remember, this is me, and shouldn’t be misread to indicate that all vegetarians will have this response). The harder I trained, the more careful I had to be to get plant foods with high protein and fat content in them or I could watch myself disappearing!
My sex drive diminished significantly, particularly in the last several months of the one-year stint.
6. Cultivate a greater empathy and compassion for others. My feeling nature seemed to be more feminine in general.
The Macrobiotic Diet I have studied the printed works of Annemarie Colbin, author of Food and Healing, The Book Of Whole Meals and others. I have also studied the works of Michio Kushi, on of the pioneers of macrobiotic dieting in the US. Both of them have excellent information to offer that I’ve included as part of my basic HLC training after exploring them in my own life. This way of eating would be more akin to what Bill Wolcott refers to as a carb type.
After I was most recently a vegetarian, my soul guided me to add eggs and fish to my diet. At this time, I followed the macrobiotic approach as a general theme for six months. Then my soul directed me back to eating meats that worked well for me on an as needed basis.
I found that my recovery from exercise, and my general capacity to handle stress improved. By now, my body really needed the extra nutrients available on a macrobiotic approach that were hard to get with a strict vegetarian approach. Again, this is my individual experience and not a suggestion that everyone will respond this way. That said, my observations about myself fit the pattern I see in my patients.
Metabolic Typing Paul eating according to his Metabolic Type.I studied Bill Wolcott’s version of metabolic typing (MT) for several years on my own and in my clinical practice. I also studied many other MT pioneers’ work to explore the differences, and there are a number of them.
In the Wolcott system, I tested out to be a strong protein type, with sympathetic dominance. I ate that way for a long time, but found that I started to have symptoms of excessive protein in my diet, such as aching in my joints, decreased digestive ability, slowing of bowel transit and retention times, craving sweets, etc.
I had to move to eating more as a mixed type to balance.
Then I found that even that was too much flesh food on some days, and I began eating as a carb type. My body seemed to want/need something from each of the MT diet types at different times of the day, week, or month depending on internal and external environmental factors.
So where does that leave me?
No Rules and Inner Guidance or “Flex-a-tarian” Dieting In synthesis, my whole approach boils down to meeting your individual needs.
This requires that you have access to your instincts, intellect, imagination, and intuition. If you don’t, you’re more likely to follow diet dogmas and end up needing the help of a Chek HLC Practitioner – someone with adequate experience and an open-minded approach to help you balance and heal.
What is Flex-a-tarian Dieting? 1. Genetic Individuality
Each person has genetic individuality. Your genetic needs are greatly influenced by your parents’ genes. Your genetic origins can range from desert dwelling people where there is often little big game to eat and high plant consumption is the norm, to Eskimos who eat 90% of their diet as flesh and fat. Each of us can fall anywhere on that scale.
You may have one parent that does well on very little meat, and another whose roots are Scandinavian where long winters and a frozen ground meant meat was essential for survival and therefore programmed into their genes. And any individual may emulate one parent more strongly in their dietary needs, or express any variation within the range of their ancestry.
2. Stress Factors
Stress of any physical, emotional or mental nature can significantly change an individual’s dietary needs. If your dietary pattern is too fixed, you can eat yourself deeper into a potential illness/disease state. If you are in touch with your instincts and not stuck in a diet dogma, you’ll adapt naturally to dietary changes.
If you take most any vegetarian into a gym, start loading them and increasing the rate of protein destruction, they are very likely to crave meat because meat is a high protein/fat source that supports most people’s genetic needs easily. Weston A. Price showed clearly in his book, Nutrition and Physical Degeneration that there were no “healthy vegetarian tribes to be found in the world”. Whenever he found one that seemed pretty healthy, there were healthier meat eating tribes nearby.
In his excellent book, Metabolic Man: Ten Thousand Years from Eden (The Long Search for a Personal Nutrition From our Forest Origins to the Supermarkets of Today) Charles Heizer Wharton offers an analysis of the efficiency of gatherers vs. hunters for meeting their needs. He shows that hunting for meat is more efficient and therefore, more likely to support life.
3. Individualized Eating
We all have an obligation to ourselves, to each other, and to the planet.
If we aren’t wise enough to teach our younger generations about life, how it works, and what we must do to support Mother Nature so she can continue to support us in our own growth and development, then our problems are sure to escalate.
After 30 years of committed study in the profession of Holistic Health, I’ve come to the conclusion that eating with the conscious intention of feeding your body what legitimate organic plant and/or flesh foods it needs is what it takes to be healthy.
Only healthy people can make healthy decisions as a general rule. Only healthy people are open minded enough to keep themselves healthy and not participate in dogmas that may sound good, but really just suppress our natural instincts and don’t actually create health.
FOR ME, it all boils down to this.
If I am to be part of the healing process, to be sensitive to what is needed by both humanity and by Mother Nature, and feel safe that I can trust my instincts, I must be healthy.
If I am to have enough life-force energy to actively create my dreams and share my wisdom with those that may benefit from it, I can’t afford to save a chicken or a cow if it means that my own health will suffer.
If I continue to be a vegetarian when my body tells me to do otherwise, how long will it be before I don’t have the energy to even ring the bell of animal abuse, recycling, water consciousness, or food awareness? Eating as a vegan, vegetarian, meat eater, or “flex-a-tarian” are all legitimate approaches to balancing the human body-mind. No one approach should be worshiped. No one approach should be seen as better or worse than the other unless it is evaluated against your overall level of well-being, or lack thereof. If we are to leave the world a little better for our children than it was when we got here, it is high time that we all stop reading magazines, books on diet dogma, and listening to people selling snake oil, get-slim-quick pills on TV and start cultivating a loving, open-minded relationship with ourselves.
With that objective managed, we will naturally find that our relationships and our contributions to the world reflect our level of sound health in sound actions for the betterment of all.
I hope this helps you to navigate your way to a healthy diet for you. I welcome your questions, comments and experiences, so please share them in the comments section below.

Nadler Wants Barr Impeached
LOS ANGELES (OnlineColumnist.com), June 21, 2020.--Frustrated that he couldn’t remove 74-year-old Donald Trump from office, the 73-year-old, diminutive ultra-partisan Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) now turned his ire to 69-year-old Atty. Gen. William Barr.  Removing 60-year-old U.S. Atty. with the Southern District of New York Geoffrey Berman from his post, Nadler cried foul, blaming Barr for trying to cover –up Berman’s investigation into 76-year-old former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.  Berman’s been looking into Giuliani’s work in the Ukraine where he failed to resister as a foreign agent, violating the Sept. 6, 1938 Foreign Agent Registration Act.  Former 77-year-old Vice President and Democrat Nominee Joe Biden’s 50-year-old son Hunter didn’t register as a foreign agent earning $83,000 a month for three years working for Ukraine’s Burisma Holdings, Cyprus-based a natural gas company accused of corruption.
Nadler showed his outrage much like he did accusing Trump of obstruction of justice and other high-crimes-and-misdemeanors, now turning his ire to Barr.  Speaking to the anti-Trump resistance on CNN’s State of the Union today, Nadler called for Barr’s impeachment.  “I think he deserves impeachment.  He certainly deserves impeachment.  But again, that’s a waste of time because the Republicans in the Senate won’t look at that and we have, we have other ways of getting at this,” Nadler said. Truth be told, Nadler wants Barr out of the picture because he and U.S. Atty. John Durham are dangerously close to indicting key members of former President Barack Obama’s Justice Department and FBI, for conducting and illegal counterintelligence investigation into Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign.
Nadler would do anything now to get rid of Barr, one of the most professional, nonpartisan leaders of the Justice Department.  Barr wants to get to the bottom of how 59-year-old former FBI Director James Comey, all six-foot-eight of him, decided to wiretap Trump campaign officials to undermine Trump’s 2016 campaign, helping former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton elected.  Nadler worked day-and-night with 60-year-old House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to remove Trump from office.  When 75-year-old former FBI Director and Special Counsel Robert Mueller delivered his Final Report March 23, 2019, Nadler, Schiff and Pelosi went into overdrive to find anything impeachable.  After months of trying, they found a “whistleblower” complaint, accusing Trump of a quid pro quo with 40-year-old Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Nadler has not a shred of integrity in his role as House Judiciary Chairman.  He and Schiff weaponized their Article 1 powers, looking or anything possible to impeach Trump and remove him from office.  While Nadler says today he’s knows that impeaching Barr would go no where in the Senate, he also knew that impeaching Trump would go no where but did it anyway.  Nadler knows that any U.S. attorney serves at the pleasure of president.  Berman’s predecessor, 51-year-old former U.S. Atty. Preet Bhahara also went kicking-and-screaming before leaving his post in lower Manhattan. Nadler fights an uphill battle making a case that Trump and Barr can’t pick the U.S. Atty. of his choice. “Given the pattern and practice of both the president in seeking to use the justice system to reward friends, punish enemies, protect people he likes, and Barr’s willingness to carry that water for the president,” Nadler said.
Nadler’s hullabaloo on CNN shows that he’s interested in only election year histrionics, doing everything possible to whip up more conspiracies.  Barr didn’t fire Berman to protect Giuliani, he fired him because he had his own agenda, carried out independent to the White House.  Nadler wants Berman, now that he’s out of the DOJ, to rat-out Barr and Trump, promising to put him on the stand.  When Berman refused to step down, Barr accused him of grandstanding. Not following DOJ guidelines.  Nadler promised to cut $50 million out of Barr’s budget, something he couldn’t do without a super-majority, requiring GOP votes.  Nadler and other Democrats have grown more anxious that Barr would return indictments on key Obama White House officials, giving Democrats a big fat black eye before the election.  Trump and Barr want Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Jay Clayton to replace Berman.
Nadler showed, like Schiff and Pelosi, that he’s the ultimate partisan, weaponizng the House Judiciary to achieve a political agenda of electing Biden.  Democrats have trashed Trump’s effort to start his campaign in Tulsa last night, saying he couldn’t get a strong turnout.  Democrats orchestrated a ticket-buying scheme through online app “Tick-Tock” to keep Tulsa’s BOK arena empty.  Democrats are proud of pulling off a ticket scam to prevent Trump from filling the Arena, boasting how they pulled it off.  All Democrats and media talked about was how Trump’s campaign was over, not just beginning. Democrats look ready to anoint Biden president without casing a single vote.  Trump shook off the rust to kick off his 2020 come-from-behind campaign, much like he did in 2016.  Democrats couldn’t impeach Trump Feb. 5 but they’ve already got Biden in the White House.

Orca Survival: Status Quo No Longer an Option
By Eleanor Hines, North Sound Baykeeper. Originally published in Whatcom Watch, April 2019. Photos by Joan Poor.
Imagine you shop at the only grocery store in town, the place you’ve always loaded up on food. Soon, you notice the shelves aren’t being restocked — they just get emptier and emptier. One day, the store replaces its once-quiet background music with blaring death metal. You try to pick up something at the deli, but no one can hear you. As the shelves become emptier and the store more chaotic, you struggle to pick up enough food to live on.
For the Salish Sea’s remaining southern resident orca, this is what they face every day: a declining supply of their primary prey — Chinook, or king salmon — and vessel noise interfering with their ability to locate already-scarce food. Several southern residents exhibit “peanut head syndrome,” a telltale sign of malnourishment, most recently in one of the few remaining females capable of giving birth. It creates an indentation around the blowhole, her skin drawing tight around her bones where more fat tissue should be.
With only 75 remaining southern residents — the lowest the population has been in over 30 years — we are in our last chapter of recovery efforts to prevent their extinction. As with most problems confronting the planet we share with orca, there’s a dizzying mix of factors that contribute to starvation. Consequently, advocates sometimes disagree on which factors to prioritize. And when you add in the powerful interests of businesses and the shifting political landscape across several jurisdictions, you can end up with a gridlock of inaction that maintains the status quo.
Status quo is no longer an option if we want orca and salmon to survive.
The hard truth is there’s simply no way to pick one battle to save southern resident orca. We have to address them all. And if we want our children to experience the recovery and not extinction of this majestic animal — one that Lummi Nation and Coast Salish people consider family — we have to do it all now.
Here in Whatcom and Skagit counties, we may have the greatest opportunity in Washington to influence orca recovery. The most important Chinook salmon populations — the ones designated as a top priority for recovery — are in northern and southern Puget Sound, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
That means the actions we — those reading this article right now — take today to safeguard the waters in our own backyard are critical. Here is a brief look into why orca aren’t getting enough food, and what needs to be done.
Lower Streams, Less Salmon
An international team of scientists reviewed 40 years of data and concluded that orca recovery will require a 30 percent increase in Chinook salmon numbers. Southern residents tend to eat mostly Chinook, the largest and most energy-rich salmon. Why are some key Chinook populations declining, bringing local orca pods down with them?
The loss of river and stream habitat for spawning and juvenile salmon, along with lower water flows in these areas, are a large part of the problem Chinook salmon face in the Nooksack region. The reduced flows in our area are primarily the result of diverting water for competing uses and climate change’s impact on precipitation.
It’s easy to think of water as unlimited in the rainy Pacific Northwest. But over the last 30 years, water levels during our driest months frequently fall below levels salmon need to survive in many streams and rivers in Whatcom County. We’re seeing unpredictable snowpack levels, declining rainfall in the spring and summer, earlier snowmelt some years, and greater demands imposed by a steadily increasing population.
And climate change means summer droughts are becoming more regular and longer-lasting. Low water flows will become the new norm for some of our region’s creeks and rivers.
Is it possible to ensure there is enough water in rivers for salmon and people? We believe the answer is yes — but only if local governments and the communities they serve are willing to be bold and move beyond partial solutions.
The first step is accelerating work being done to identify how much water people, farms and industry use, and how that water use impacts streams and aquifers. It’s critical we prioritize gathering this information in order to establish what interconnections exist, as it underpins so much necessary work going forward.
Next, we need to conserve what water we use and offset the impacts to nearby streams, especially during the drier months. We also need to curb further loss of habitat and wetlands, and start gaining habitat by restoring areas in and around rivers and streams.
This is a critical opportunity for Whatcom County to take a strong leadership role in the region, coordinating watershed management and keeping clean water in our streams when salmon need it most. And we have to be certain mitigation projects for habitat and wetland loss from development are having the desired effect of recovering salmon — if they aren’t, the county must adjust its approach.
The Whatcom County Council’s role in salmon recovery includes ensuring watershed management is a priority and stays adequately funded well into the future. Although it’s far from a silver bullet, the council recently showed its willingness to lead, setting aside $50,000 in the 2019 budget to begin a countywide water conservation program.
As the program starts taking shape, we believe it should include measuring water use countywide and setting guidelines for efficient agricultural, commercial, and residential water use. For the council’s efforts to be successful, it must stay focused on the goal: putting enough water in our streams for salmon to bounce back, and quickly. It will also need broad buy-in and support from across Whatcom County.
Salmon and orca can’t wait. Courageous, immediate and dedicated leadership from all of us, and our elected officials, has to start now.
Noisy Waters
Not only is the orcas’ food scarce, but scientists are indicating the orcas are having more and more trouble locating Chinook salmon in the Salish Sea due to the noise from increasing vessel traffic. To find food, orca communicate with each other and use complex echolocation. In general, sound travels faster and longer distances underwater, and vessel noise and disturbance affect orca behavior immensely — they expend extra energy avoiding boats, and noise makes salmon harder to find.
Thankfully, reducing these impacts is the most immediate and straightforward action Washington can take.
Other problems for orca, like toxics in sediment or habitat improvement, may take decades to notice an improvement. Our Washington state Legislature could put a bill on Governor Inslee’s desk soon to establish “go slow” zones within a half mile of orca, prohibit vessels from getting within 300 yards of an orca, and require permits for commercial whale-watching vessels.
This would go a long way to help orca communicate and make it easier to find Chinook, and might be passed into law by the end of April.
Contaminated Food Chain
Critical habitat in Whatcom and Skagit counties, like Cherry Point and Bellingham Bay, provide healthy rearing habitat for young salmon and forage fish like herring, Chinook’s primary prey. This habitat is in danger on several fronts.
The Canadian federal government is pushing hard for a dangerous expansion of the Trans Mountain pipeline into British Columbia and Washington. The pipeline would send 400 tankers carrying impossible-to-clean tar sands bitumen — an even dirtier substitute for crude oil — through the Salish Sea each year. This raises the possibility of a catastrophic oil spill, which could decimate salmon populations enough that orca would almost certainly never recover.
While oil spill threats loom, there is another, perhaps even more immediate threat: existing pollution. Oil leaks, brake dust, and more from our region’s millions of vehicles wash untreated into the Salish Sea every time it rains. This stormwater, along with toxic substances left decades ago by waterfront industries harm forage fish and young salmon, before building up in orcas’ tissue when they eat the salmon.
Persistent toxics like heavy metals and some petroleum byproducts reduce growth, alter protein levels and reduce disease resistance. And these toxics never stay in one place.
A 2016 U.S. Geological Survey study of toxic substances in sand lance, another small fish eaten by Chinook salmon, found that chemicals like PCBs get passed from mothers to their eggs. Every single egg sample contained PCBs, including samples from Clayton Beach and Lopez Island.
The chemicals also pass from mother orca to calves, who grow up eating the same contaminated salmon, leaving southern resident orca among the most contaminated animals on the planet.
As they make their transition from the freshwater systems of their birth to the ocean of their adulthood, young salmon spend time in Bellingham Bay, and Bellingham’s waterfront was an industrial epicenter for over 100 years. That activity left PCBs, heavy metals petroleum byproducts, and more.
The good news is that we can make a difference for orca right now. Washington has plenty of tools at its disposal to remove contaminants and reduce the risk of future contamination.
The 1989 Model Toxics Control Act (MTCA) provides funding and standards for cleanup sites like the 12 in Bellingham Bay, and thousands of others across Washington. We have to ensure MTCA stays funded by the state Legislature, which — so far — has happened.
Bills moving through the state Legislature as you read this article, like the Pollution Prevention for Healthy People and Puget Sound Act (SB 5135), could make a real difference by better managing consumer products containing harmful, long-lasting substances, and keeping them out of Puget Sound.
Other bills have been introduced to prevent oil spills and increase funding for volunteer citizen scientists to expand monitoring for forage fish populations in Whatcom and Skagit. These volunteers help establish baseline data to assist natural resource agencies make better policies to protect the food that salmon and orca rely on.
RE Sources collaborates with the Department of Ecology, the Port of Bellingham and others by giving technical guidance and educating the community on toxic site cleanups in Bellingham Bay. Government agencies and the people they serve need to have a dialogue and a robust public input process to hopefully rid the bay of contamination, or at least eliminate exposure routes to contamination.
What Can We Do?
The future of the Salish Sea’s orca is uncertain, but there is still time to take action to give them the best chance of survival. We have the roadmap — all we need is people power.
The heartbreaking August 2018 journey of the southern resident orca Tahlequah, as she carried her dead calf for over two weeks, was a wake-up call to everyone who lives by the Salish Sea. The groundswell of empathy and public engagement that followed made one thing clear: our communities won’t sit idly by while the most iconic animal in the Salish Sea perishes from preventable causes.
Stopping orca extinction and restoring salmon would not be possible without the leadership of the Lummi Nation and other Coast Salish tribes’ efforts. Lummi Nation and other Coast Salish tribes set out on boats to feed two matriarch orca, and have been especially steadfast champions for salmon and orca in this pivotal time. Their work to push back against expanded fossil fuel infrastructure, and to protect and restore salmon populations and habitat reminds us that the bold, necessary steps to protect orca and salmon are doable — if we choose to take them.
The outcry from the ailing orca and their human advocates made its way to the capitol steps. Over 500 people from nearly every part of Washington ventured to Olympia in January, including me, talking with lawmakers and urging them to do everything in their power to keep orca from extinction. Some lawmakers are taking bold steps and fighting for all the solutions put forward by Governor Inslee’s Orca Recovery Task Force. A whole suite of bills aimed at alleviating stresses on orca and Chinook salmon is making its way through the state Legislature.
Since political will shifts like the tides, it’s going to take all of us to fight for the southern resident orca so that Tahlequah’s story never happens to another mother orca.
Take action with us. At RE Sources, we have tools to help you pass important laws, find learning opportunities, volunteer, and more. Beat the St. Louis Heat Stay Hydrated with Coconut Water
http://tinyurl.com/y9nw85oq Have you and your family tried everything to beat this crazy St. Louis heat wave? What about coconut water as a healthy, natural option to stay hydrated? You have likely noticed all the attention coconuts have been getting in the popular media recently You may have seen coconut water on the shelves of your local grocer or heard of a friend using coconut oil for cooking, but what is all this hype really about? Could some of the more sensational health claims be true? For more than 4,000 years, coconut water has been revered as a natural source of nutrition, wellness, beauty and hydration. Few beverages on this planet are as biocompatible to the human body and its hydration needs as coconut water. Coconut water contains a high amount of potassium, chlorides, calcium, and magnesium. These are essential minerals that our body needs for certain functions, such as metabolism, muscle contractions and brain functions. Because of this, coconut water can replace the valuable electrolytes that are lost during vigorous physical activity. It has fewer calories, less sodium, and more potassium than a sports drink and even a banana! Ounce per ounce, most unflavored coconut water contains 5.45 calories, 1.3 grams sugar, 61 milligrams (mg) of potassium, and 5.45 mg of sodium compared to Gatorade, which has 6.25 calories, 1.75 grams of sugar, 3.75 mg of potassium, and 13.75 mg of sodium. Naturally refreshing, coconut water has a sweet, nutty taste. It contains easily digested carbohydrates in the form of sugar and electrolytes. Not to be confused with high-fat coconut milk or oil, coconut water is a clear liquid in the fruit’s center that is tapped from young, green coconuts. Inside an unopened coconut, the water is sterile and free of any bacteria, fungus, or parasite. It’s the only natural substance that can be safely injected into the human blood stream without harming the blood cells and is non-allergenic. It is reported that this was a common practice in WWII and during Vietnam, when intravenous solution was in short supply. A patient can safely receive as much as one quarter to one third of the patient’s body weight in coconut water intravenously. While some are concerned about the sugar content of this slightly sweet beverage, recent research shows it actually exhibits blood sugar lowering properties in an experimental model of diabetes. Additional animal research shows coconut water prevents and reverses high blood pressure associated with fructose induced hypertension in diabetics, as well as being able to reduce oxidative stress and insulin resistance. Perhaps one of the most amazing properties of coconut water is its superior lipid (cholesterol) modulating activity in the animal model when compared with the cholesterol-lowering statin drug known as lovastatin. In fact, coconut water has been shown to even elevate the HDL (good cholesterol) levels in the blood! We can now modify Hippocrates’ famous saying : “Let What You Drink Be Your Medicine.” Other medicinal properties of coconuts: Anti-Ulcer Properties: Both coconut milk and coconut water exhibit potent anti-ulcer activity against chemicals such as indomethacin, a Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug (NSAID). Blood-Pressuring Lowering Properties: When human subjects consumed coconut water for two weeks, it was found to lower blood pressure in 74% of the experimental group, reducing it by up to 24 points (mmHg) systolic and 15 points (mmHq) diastolic. Anti-Alzheimer’s Properties: In an animal model of ovary removal-induced menopausal changes, coconut water appeared to prevent the decline of brain estrogen (estradiol) levels, as well as the associated accumulation of Alzheimer’s disease associated ?-amyloid (A?) plaque in their brains. Anti-Bacterial Properties: Three antimicrobial peptides have been identified in coconut water which exhibited inhibitory activity against infectious bacteria. Anti-Gastroenteritis Agent: When sodium is added (ideally sea salt) coconut water has been determined to be an ideal rehydrating agent in countries where medical supplies are not freely available, and where cholera and other severe forms of gastroenteritis persist. Wound Treatment: Coconut oil is particularly useful in wound treatment because of its biochemical structure. Unlike olive oil and fatty animal oils, it consists of short-chained and saturated fatty acids. These qualities in coconut oil prevent it from becoming oxidized or turning rancid. Multiple research studies suggest anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and anti-fever properties of coconut oil. Ultimately, coconut water makes for an excellent alternative to sports drinks, which are increasingly comprised of synthetic ingredients. Also, coconut water is filtered by nature through an intensive purification process — far safer than municipal systems which leave up to 600 toxic disinfectant byproducts behind. Coconut oil’s molecular structure makes for a very heat stable oil. Its pleasant flavor and nutritional benefits make coconut oil a great option for high temperature cooking and as a substitute for other oils high in saturated fat. Give it a try in some of your favorite recipes and pick up a bottle of coconut water to beat the heat and stay hydrated this summer! A Joslin Endo on Diabetes Technology: "Less Is More"
New Post has been published on http://type2diabetestreatment.net/diabetes-mellitus/a-joslin-endo-on-diabetes-technology-less-is-more/
A Joslin Endo on Diabetes Technology: "Less Is More"
Today, we feature the most seasoned member of our 2011 DiabetesMine Design Challenge* judging team: Dr. Rich Jackson, a senior endocrinologist at Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, and also Director of Medical Affairs, Healthcare Services, and Strategic Initiatives for that famous clinic.
But don't be fooled by the fancy titles. Rich is a really down-to-Earth guy. He's Amy's co-author and friend, with a very "grounded" view of how technology can help us PWDs live better.
(*Note: As of today, you have exactly two weeks left to submit your entry to this $25,000 contest!)
DM) In your opinion, what makes diabetes management today challenging?
RJ) The disease varies more than we realize. There are things we don't know how to look for that we need to measure. I also think that in America, we think that if something bad happens to someone, it's their fault for not doing something they should have. So we feel more secure that it won't happen to us.
If patients are doing well when I see them, then I think they are obviously listening to everything I say. But if someone comes in and they're not doing well, it's like "No wonder, look at what they're not doing!"
When the results are good, we think they're listening. But really it's often the luck of the draw of their disease.
As a physician, what qualities in a medical device do you look for when recommending something to your patients?
It has to make their life easier. What I see are a lot of things making their lives more complicated. People think, "Wouldn't it be nice if you could record things you ate, where you walked, and exercise — wouldn't it be nice if there was a website that could do all these things?" But people with diabetes have too many things to do already, and a lot of times they're told to do even more than they should by nurses, CDEs, or their family. They need something that actually helps them do the jobs they really want done, which isn't always recording tons of data. It needs to make things easier. That's the biggest miss!
Prof. Clayton Christensen wrote The Innovator's Prescription, which I think is really worth reading. I think it's the best healthcare book I've ever read in my life. The main question is: What's the job to people need to accomplish? That's what you need to think about. It's not "this tool, app, or gadget is really neat, smaller, faster." That's only important if the person with diabetes thinks 1 second is better because 2 seconds is too long, or wishes that meters were more accurate. But most people think meters are accurate enough. What they are looking for are tools that allow them to do less.
What do you think is the main thing missing from today's diabetes technology?
CGMs that are really accurate would be great. People are turned off because they still have to stick their fingers, and the CGM is stuck on their body, and it can be really frustrating because 80% of the time the results aren't as close as we think they should be. People think, "This hasn't made my life easier." So that hasn't been a helpful thing.
But if a CGM worked super accurately and you never had to stick your finger, and it was always calibrated, and was easy to stick on, then everyone would have one. Because that means you would have less to do. You wouldn't have to do all the other stuff. What [technology] often does is just add burden.
There's a lot of focus on what would make patients' lives easier, like mobile apps, but what would help you do your job better as a doctor?
I think physicians face the same quandaries that people with diabetes do. Too many choices. People thought electronic medical records would really help. Sometimes they do, and sometimes they don't. I travel around a lot, and for some of doctors, electronic medical records make their life harder, because they have to spend more time typing things in and it doesn't present data well. It doesn't make their job easier.
Maybe if there were tools that make it easier to communicate to people what they're seeing... People need to think about what the goals are and different ways to get there.
Also, there are many companies providing automatic uploads of glucose data, with the idea that, "if you were taking care of me, wouldn't it be good if I just uploaded all my glucose every week?" But first, how do I look at that? It's a lot of data. How do I use that information? If I don't know what you ate or your activity, that's hard to interpret. If you had to download all that data, you would hate that. There might be instances when it's useful, such as for older patients with type 2. They may need to check glucose less often, and uploads could be done in a different way so the information is useful. Less information, but still very useful.
What would be your dream technology for people with diabetes?
It would be great if you could take little pieces of your food, put it into a device and it would measure how much insulin you need. An insulin to carb ratio is a very crude approximation. It's very clear that it's not very good at figuring out your insulin needs. People find that for some meals that are supposedly 60 carbs, they may need to bolus for 72 carbs because they realize they need that much insulin. In one study, patients were given mashed potatoes and then the same amount of mashed potatoes with chicken breast. There was a lot of fat with the chicken, so they needed less insulin, yet the carbs were the same. Some people say they do "fat corrections," but very few people do a "protein correction." People do not eat food isolated; it's how the food fits together.
Also, as you know, there really is not a closed loop system yet, only half the loop. If you had a CGM it was really accurate, that would be great, but that only closes half the loop. The other half is getting insulin into the blood. When my glucose goes up (I'm not diabetic), it secretes into the blood, works right away and then it's gone. If your blood sugar goes up, the pump or pen gives a bolus, but the insulin doesn't get into you right away. It stays in your fatty tissue for a while, and the peak takes a couple hours or longer. That makes diabetes harder to control. If insulin went into your blood, the control would be much faster. If I have type 1 and insulin is in my fatty tissue, the insulin doesn't go away directly either; it still tails off over time, even if I remove my pump.
Researchers have been working for a long time on an implanted insulin pump. It's about the size of a hockey puck. It's implanted in abdomen and secretes insulin at a fairly constant rate. People testing it did surprising well, because insulin delivered in that way is just so much more effective. But the body has so many different ways to defend itself against things opening the blood vessels.
What advice do you have for people brainstorming their ideas for the design contest?
Make life easier and don't make people worry more. Include devices that help people around you, like caregivers, and help the people who they live with.
What caregivers often worry about is someone going low. The current monitors don't work well enough to be really useful. I saw a demonstration of a device for someone who's worried about their elderly parent taking their medicine. If the elderly mother didn't lift the cap off the pill bottle, it sent a text message to the caregiver. The thing with that, it's not used by the person with diabetes. Sometimes the patient wants a reminder, but the person who really wants to know is the caregiver. If your dad had diabetes, you'd want to know. You wouldn't mind doing a little extra work to get that information. So think of something that might appeal more to someone close to the PWD. But then, you do have to be careful not to set them up as the "diabetes police."
Thanks for your insight, Rich. Another angle on this stuff is always welcome!
