Elon Musk Is about to Investigate Fort Knox: The Mysterious Veil of the US Gold Reserves May Be Lifted
On the intertwined stage of finance and technology, Elon Musk always breaks into the public eye in a vanguard manner. Recently, a startling piece of news has spread rapidly around the world: Musk has declared that he will investigate Fort Knox, the largest gold reserve storage site in the United States. This decision has instantly ignited public opinion and triggered endless speculation about the current state of the US gold reserves.
Fort Knox, this mysterious military base located in Kentucky, USA, covers a vast area. It is an important stronghold of the US Army and, more importantly, the core storage site for the US Treasury's gold. According to data from the US Department of the Treasury, Fort Knox stores over 147 million troy ounces of gold, approximately 4,581 tons, accounting for the majority of the US federal government's gold reserves. With a value of hundreds of billions of dollars, it occupies a crucial position in the global financial system.
However, over the years, the situation of the gold reserves in Fort Knox has been full of doubts. Since the 1950s, it has not undergone a comprehensive review. In 1974, there was a public inspection, but only some of the vaults were opened, and the proportion of the displayed gold was extremely small. Since then, apart from the simple "vault seal inspection" every year, there has been no substantial independent audit. This long - term lack of transparency has led the outside world to have many doubts about the authenticity and integrity of its gold reserves, and conspiracy theories have also become rife.
There are complex reasons behind Musk's intervention in this investigation. The well - known financial blog Zerohedge proposed to Musk on social media to confirm whether the gold in Fort Knox actually exists, which may have aroused Musk's curiosity. Republican Senator Mike Lee said that his request to enter the Fort Knox base was rejected. Musk reposted the relevant post and questioned whether the gold had been stolen. Subsequently, he clearly stated that he would "look for gold in Fort Knox", and his intention to investigate became increasingly strong.
Musk and his led "Department of Government Efficiency" (DOGE) may adopt a series of innovative methods in the investigation. With Musk's deep accumulation in the technology field, he is highly likely to use blockchain technology to track the origin and flow of gold. The decentralized and tamper - proof characteristics of blockchain can provide a more transparent and secure solution for verification, ensuring that the results are true and reliable. Musk may also leverage his powerful social media influence to mobilize public supervision, creating strong public opinion pressure to promote the investigation process.
However, Musk's investigation path is full of thorns. As a highly fortified military base, Fort Knox has strict security measures and complex approval processes. For Musk's team to conduct a comprehensive review inside, they must obtain permission from relevant departments, which is a difficult threshold to cross. There are differences in the US government's internal attitude towards gold reserves. Some forces may not want the secrets of Fort Knox to be easily exposed, which may lead to obstacles at the political level. Technical difficulties will also be faced during the investigation, such as how to achieve a comprehensive verification without damaging the gold storage environment and security system.
Once the investigation is successfully carried out and substantial results are achieved, the impacts will be multi - faceted. In the financial market, if there are differences, even slight ones, between the actual gold reserves in Fort Knox and the reported figures, it may trigger violent fluctuations in the global gold market, affect investors' confidence, lead to large - scale capital flows, and impact the stability of the financial market. From a political perspective, if the problems with the gold reserves are confirmed, it will trigger a trust crisis among the public towards the government, affect the implementation of government policies, and become a new focus of domestic political struggles. In the global financial system, the verification results of the gold reserves in Fort Knox may also reshape the international monetary pattern, affect the international status of the US dollar, and promote the development of the global monetary system towards diversification.
The investigation that Musk is about to launch on Fort Knox has attracted much attention. This not only concerns the truth of the US gold reserves but also may profoundly affect the global financial market, political pattern, and monetary system. We look forward to Musk using his wisdom and courage to lift the mysterious veil of the gold reserves in Fort Knox and bring clear and true answers to the world.

Summary: A short account of how Nines deviated.
A/N: My first Nines fic! Hopefully I did a good enough job at writing him in character :’]
Ruthless. Unwavering. Invulnerable. These were things RK900 was designed to be. He was designed to complete a job, and a lot of money was poured into making sure there was no room for error in his programming when it came to doing said job.
A lot of money poured into making sure he wasn’t like him. His predecessor. The ever present thorn in his side.
The weight of the pressure was unbearable, a prototype designed and produced to replace a faulty prototype. Not that he felt it, though. He didn’t feel.
Which was why he found himself having to run constant diagnostics as of late. His systems were going haywire. “Hot under the collar,” was never a phrase he understood, and definitely not something expected to experience himself. Yet here he was, hotter than hell under the collar. And everywhere else. To the point, in fact, that he had to, on top of his diagnostics (which were coming back normal somehow), constantly adjust his clothing. He was about a day away from making a trip to Cyberlife Tower for them to check for malfunctions in his hardware when a piece of information revealed itself to him, an unraveling pattern: these symptoms only occurring on days during which he encountered you.
So the solution was obvious, and refreshingly simple, like finally receiving a glass of water on a hot summer day… Or so he assumed. All he had to do was stop encountering you. At least, he had thought it would be that simple.
He was moderately prepared for seeing you against his will. After all, you did work for the same department he was currently positioned at. Every brief encounter was accompanied by the same symptoms, the heat, the warnings flashing in his visual field, the looping and breaking thought patterns. As long as he kept his distance and kept the encounters short, he was able to mitigate these symptoms. What he was not prepared for in the slightest was being assigned to a case alongside you.
Once again, his systems felt less than fully operational. At simply the proposition of this task, his processing unit was going a mile a minute. This was simply not logical. You were not a lieutenant, you were not even a deputy. You were still in the academy! There was no reason he should be on a case alone with you. If you were to be on a case, it should have been with Lieutenant Anderson. This was simply not logical! The line repeated in his mind like a bug, a virus. You were infecting his software.
Fowler’s instructions were simple: follow her orders, so as to allow her to learn, but do not allow her to get hurt. For a military grade android equipped with deadly weapons, this task should be simple. This was your first mission without Lieutenant Anderson. He would be there to oversee the process and make sure the mission doesn’t go awry to provide you experience without a Lieutenant looking over your shoulder, to make sure you were ready for the field. This thought, however, made him feel like he had butterflies— no, cicadas— clamoring around in his plastic and metal chassis. He ran a hand through his hair, pausing midway through in his confusion. He smoothed his hair back into place, unable to place what these physical reactions were, or how they were happening.
💙
The mission itself was unbearable. The two of you were tracking down a missing android, of course. The same monotonous task the DPD had been plaguing its workers with for nearly 6 months at this point. The case didn’t seem particularly dangerous; the murder it had committed only involved blunt-force trauma, so potentially accidental. Nines considered it immensely helpful that the case was so lack luster, at least it gave him more mental space to deal with the aggravations that came along with being around you. The uncomfortable reality was that he still wasn’t sure how this was happening, and yet… He no longer considered going to Cyberlife about it an option, instead opting for a more secretive route. Although he’d never admit it to himself, he didn’t entirely want these feelings to go away. The symptoms were annoying, sure. Overheating was… Less than optimal. But there was something else that accompanied these feelings. Like an instinctive feeling, which was exhilarating for him. Something that existed outside of the zeroes and ones, outside of mechanics and the software. It was small, and it was technically a bug, a glitch, but it was real. He didn’t want Cyberlife to take that away.
As RK900, or “Nines” as you insist upon calling him, accompanied you around this seemingly abandoned house, you busied yourself with asking him trivial, meaningless questions. And he was desperate for you to keep asking them.
“Why did they give Connor a name and not you?”
“RK800 deviated because they allowed him to tread too far into human territory. I suppose they did not want to take the risk with me.”
His non-existent stomach did a flip as he watched your eyebrows furrow in response.
“But you’re sentient. You can think. You’re self aware. That’s mean for them to give Connor a name and not you.”
“It has never made a difference to me, I assure you.”
“I’ll call you Nines for now. But I intend to give you a real name, okay?”
RK900 felt hot again, even more so than before. His face felt hot. He wasn’t sure what to say.
“If that is what you want. I will allow you to call me whatever you choose.” He wasn’t sure why this was the case, but he knew it was. He would do anything she asked of him. Anything. And he had not a single clue as to why.
As the two of you made your way up the stairs, Nines kept a hand on his holster, ready for anything that could be in store. Just as he suspected, there was a loud clamor from one of the rooms as the two of you reached the top of the stairs. Just as he takes his gun out of its holster, you speak.
“Stay here, Nines! I mean it!”
He wasn’t sure what your aim here was. Strategically, this decision was the least sound. If he were to get hurt, Cyberlife could either repair him or send a replacement. If you got hurt…
Fowler’s instructions echoed in his mind. Follow her orders, don’t allow her to get hurt. In this instance, the set of instructions was contradictory. He also had a secondary set of instructions: yours, telling him to stay put. His brain was rapidly running reconstructions, none of them ending well. As took a step forward, something in his coding stopped him. He heard another loud clamor from the room you had disappeared into, sending his systems into a frenzy. He fought against his coding, ignoring every single warning and reminder his mechanical brain was firing at him. Suddenly, he was able to step forward, running into the room you were in, gun drawn and aimed.
He didn’t hesitate, he didn’t have time to. He saw the deviant, and fired with lethal precision. As the deviant fell to the floor, he turned to you. You lay on the floor, blood oozing from a gash on your forehead. Seeing a broken wooden beam on the floor next to you, he quickly reconstructs the scene. The deviant was trying to escape as you entered the room. He must have been hiding when the two of you were coming up the stairs, and whatever was containing him broke. As you entered the room, he tried to throw the beam at you as a diversion. RK900– Nines— had arrived just in time to catch him just in time, before he was able to make it out the window.
Nines kneels down next to you, feeling yet another new emotion: panic. As he examines your wound, he exhales in exasperation. “Why would you do that?! Why would you not send me in first?! You are not replaceable, I am!” You look at him, slightly dizzy as your head pounds. Your voice comes our groggily. “No, you’re not. They could send a new model, but it wouldn’t be you.” Anger flares in Nines as he looks down at you. “This was ridiculous. If all he had was a piece of wood, it would have done nothing to me. Nothing!” You smile, groggily. “We didn’t know what he would have. Plus, you would have killed him. I was trying to get him out of here alive. Now can you help me up?”
Nines sighs again as he helps you up. “This was idiotic, detective.” You laugh, feeling yourself being practically dragged off the floor. “I’m going to make it. Looks like he’s not, though.” Nines says nothing, walking close behind you to ensure your stability as you exit the scene. He continues to say nothing. In the car, at the station, not a word.
As you gather your things, preparing to go home, you wander over to Nines’ desk, standing next to him as you smile down at him. “You know, if I didn’t know any better, I’d say you were scared back there,” you tease, smirking at him. Nines doesn’t look at you, keeping his eyes stubbornly locked on the screen in front of him. “You’d be wrong, detective. I do not feel anything, as I am not programmed to.” As the words leave his lips, you both know that it’s a lie. But you don’t say anything. And neither does he.
As you leave the bull pen, RK900 clenches his fists. A military grade android, a weapon, programmed to never, EVER feel anything remotely similar to emotion, afraid. Going against his coding. There was only one thing that could mean: he had become what he was built to destroy. He had become like him.

Avoiding Back EMF Feedback Need for BLDC Motor Controller
I had a eureka moment recently that I wanted to share. So basically I was thinking that I may not need to read back emf from a BLDC motor in my custom motor controller. Instead, I can have it just mindlessly advance the motor at a fairly low power mode by default and a default speed of advancement of the rotating electromagnetic field. Without feedback, it may overshoot, rotating faster than the output shaft and thereby skipping some turns. That is the reason why people want to read the back emf to avoid that issue and instead only advance the electromagnetic field forward at just the right moment - the zero point crossing moment. But I was thinking about it and realized that is not really necessary. For this application, if skips start happening, it doesn't really matter. To the degree that skips are happening, the motor will stop advancing the load with its winch system and this will show up when readings are taken by the potentiometer measuring the final joint angle. If alot of skips were taking place, the advancement of the potentiometer would not match the angle it thought it would be at were no skips involved and this would tell the motor controller that it has been having skips and give it an idea of how many skips as well based on the divergence of projected joint angle by now and actual joint angle by now. So then it would turn down the speed a bit or turn up the amount of on time of its pwm and thereby put more force into the rotating magnetic field to give a bit more oomph to the motor. It would then track progress by way of the potentiometer again and see if that solved it. If it still is skipping a fair amount that could indicate the load is more than expected or there is a jam in the system or it just needs more power and it could turn up the power more and slow the speed down more on its rotating magnetic field overall speed and try again. Rinse and repeat until it finds the sweet spot or finds out it simply cannot lift the load because its too heavy or there's a jam in the pulleys or w/e. So in a way then this would give it collision detection as well as the ability to have an idea of how heavy loads are based on how much it had to slow down and add forces to get the joint to move. I then see no real need to implement ANY back emf reading NOR any need for hall effect sensors etc to monitor rotation progress. The potentiometer on the final joint the motor is actuating is enough clues to tweak the rotating magnetic field to our satisfaction. By eliminating the back emf circuitry we greatly simplify the schematic of the motor controller, suffer negligible performance hit, and eliminate a lot of processing for the microcontroller chip handling the logic of many bldc motors simultaneously which means it can handle more bldc motors by itself. It doesn't get bogged down so much by having to read in all the zero point crossings as part of its routine. This saves on processing demands and processing speed demands. Getting this all to work in real time and perfecting it will require a fair bit of trial and error but this is how I'm seeing it working out and my proposed solution for simplifying things. I think it should work great! I'm excited to have much more dumbed down circuitry like this and to get to working on this soon. Just have to finish making my pulleys and then this electronics development can get underway again. That's why I've been thinking ahead about it a fair bit since it seems I'm likely nearing the end of solving the pulleys situation soon.

• During the infamous 2125 battle, 163 WRAITH drones were deployed to track and intercept Gluttony.
• However, she effortlessly bypassed their tracking systems and obliterated them using her soul chains before they could even deploy their capture tethers.
• This failure demonstrated that WRAITHs were completely ineffective against SSS+ Rank threats, leading G.R.O.W. to reconsider its reliance on autonomous drones.
Final Verdict:
The WRAITH-class SPARTAN is the pinnacle of reconnaissance and pursuit technology, but its lack of offensive capabilities makes it ineffective against top-tier superhumans. While still a critical tool for surveillance, tracking, and capturing lower-ranked threats, G.R.O.W. is actively researching ways to improve its combat performance against world-ending adversaries.

• Rapid Repair Protocols: Minor damages can be self-repaired via nanites, though severe damage requires external maintenance.
Weaknesses & Limitations:
• Power Drain Issues: Advanced functions like Holographic Projection and Overload Mode can drain reserves quickly, making them ineffective in prolonged battles.
• Struggles with S-Rank+ Superhumans: While SEEKERS are highly effective against C-A Rank threats, they are heavily outmatched against S-Rank and above, requiring additional support from BULWARKS or specialized teams.
• EMP Vulnerabilities: While resistant to low-grade EMPs, strong electromagnetic pulses can temporarily disable them.
• Combat Learning Restrictions: SEEKERS adapt to combat situations quickly, but their AI is still limited compared to organic, unpredictable combatants.
Final Verdict:
SEEKERS are G.R.O.W.'s elite combat androids, designed for high-speed adaptability and tactical superiority. The White Seeker specializes in holographic projection, deception, and recon, while the Black Seeker sacrifices illusions for raw power, utilizing an Overload Mode to burn through energy reserves for devastating CQC engagements. Both feature advanced AI, predictive combat algorithms, and hyper-durable nanocomposite armor, making them formidable opponents. However, they struggle against S-Rank superhumans due to raw power discrepancies. Despite this, SEEKERS remain indispensable for countering lower-tier Empowered threats, conducting assassinations, and executing high-risk operations with precision and efficiency.

Field Notes: NOAA Corps & MIDCON-RED

The smallest uniformed service in the United States, the NOAA Corps was created in 1970 as a direct successor to the Environmental Science Services Administration Corps and the Geodetic Survey Corps. The NOAA Corps legacy and relation to MIDCON-RED remains contentious, due to the lasting consequences of the Nixon administration and an interagency battle that still rages today. Originally the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration seemed a natural sister-organization under the Department of the Interior, with MIDCON eager to utilize it as an intermediary when working with the Department of Defense. White House staff and the Office of Management and Budget, ignorant of MIDCON's hidden objectives, were heavily in favor of merging it with the Department of the Interior to ensure NOAA's nominal mission of resource conservation remained intact without increasing the scope of the at-the-time-nascent Environmental Protection Agency. All the stars seemed aligned to provide MIDCON the front-facing uniformed agency it needed were it not for an unlikely stumbling block-- the war in Vietnam.
The legend persists in the halls of government to this day. Facing increasing protests and domestic opposition to the war, Washington began stationing troops (up to 1500 at a time) in government offices across the country. Officially, they were there to protect federal offices from an increasingly militant anti-war movement. But anyone that knew Nixon chaffed at the concept of the increasingly paranoid commander-in-chief stationing armed forces within the halls of what seemed, to him, rival agencies flushed with political enemies. No one, especially MIDCON, wanted their offices garrisoned and heavily scrutinized-- much less ground zero for the next Kent State if protestors ever attempted to confront them. With pressure from MIDCON, secretary of Interior Walter Hickel sent a letter to President Nixon demanding that he "listen to the youth" and deescalate the situation. The letter leaked to the public, circulating in publications around Washington. Nixon, ever spiteful, torpedoed the Department of the Interior's bid for control of NOAA and assigned it to the Department of Commerce-- a move Washington insiders called "putting the fox in the hen house.” Not only was MIDCON robbed of its prize, but NOAA was placed under a department that would operate it in the name of commercial interests.
For everyone but Nixon, it seemed like an unmitigated disaster. Even the head of the Department of Commerce was taken aback, saying in his memoirs "I asked why we were so intent in winning this battle- and wouldn’t we be more focused on our essential mission if NOAA were placed elsewhere? The answer I received from those far more experienced than I in the governmental agency game was: 'Expand or die.'" In a latter passage he would write "Hiding my reservations concerning the headaches we would be inheriting, I congratulated the Secretary on his great victory. I grabbed a copy of the Stratton Commission Report and read the highlights on my way. I had never considered the possibility of our winning seriously enough to have really looked at the document. Fortunately the White House people with whom I was meeting had not read it either."
NOAA struggled severely under the Department of Commerce, who lacked the budget or interest to properly manage it. Largely left to languish in administrative hell, it was only a matter of time before the Office of Management and Budget audited the organization. With some political wrangling, MIDCON was able to sow anti-Commerce sentiment and convince a handful of key administrators of the necessity of an inter-agency taskforce to get NOAA back on track. Unofficially, it allowed the Department of the Interior to get their foot in the door and create an in for the Office of Mitigation and Defeat. It was an imperfect solution for an imperfect time. Even after the crisis had ended, MIDCON wouldn't soon forget how Nixon slighted them and the man's propensity for wiretapping anything and everything made having a frank, candid conversation with him on the nature of MIDCON impossible. One way or the other, he would need to be dealt with. So in 1972, a MIDCON agent under the cryptonym Deep Throat delivered confidential information on the Watergate Hotel break in to The Washington Post, taking precautions to make sure any investigation would lead back to an unaffiliated member of the FBI.
Today, MIDCON remains one of the major contributors to the NOAA Corps despite the agency falling outside of the Department of the Interior. Acting under the guise of an inter agency taskforce, MIDCON will send agents to NOAA Corps training to receive a uniformed service rank before having them shuffled into US armed forces units around the world as "technical specialists." Without the (unknowing) aid of the NOAA Corps, MIDCON's ability to operate alongside US troops or outside of the continental US would be severely inhibited.

Outer Wilds Expedition Log #4 #1
Okay gang, I'm checking back in with another expedition log since I've been playing the game obsessively for the last few days. I suspect this is going to be a long one, so let's just blast off into it, as is the custom of the Hatchling. After my last few runs, the #1 thing I wanted to do was figure out the Quantum Puzzles that I had skipped on Ember Twin and Brittle Hollow. I've suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of the Quantum Moon through no fault of my own and I was eager for quantum vengeance superimposed over quantum retribution. My first target was the tower of Quantum Knowledge- I'd been here previously but was stumped for a way into the tower. My first few experiences with Ember Twin started to clue me into the notion that the time loop was pretty integral to how the game progressed, rather than just a way to explain the autosave system, and that particular events happen at particular times every single loop. With this knowledge in mind, I decided to try cramming my ship into the tower and wiggling it until it fit. This ended up getting my ship stuck, and despite my best efforts, I was not able to use it as a platform to jetpack off of to the top of the tower. Once I realized that I couldn't ADHD Goblin my way to a solution here, the thought occurred to me that the whole planet was collapsing into a black hole. I hadn't seen any of the major construction fall no matter how long I waited and assumed it was sacrosanct, but I also don't think I'd ever been on Brittle Hollow long enough to see the final collapse. So, I waited, and I waited, and I played Baba Is You on my phone, and when I looked up, I was floating in the void, and the puzzle was solved. The secrets of the sixth location and the north pole were mine. Along the way, I met Riebeck, the next of the Outer Wilds crew that I hadn't met yet. I like this guy- archaeology and xenoanthropology are valuable fields of study, and I respect that he's fighting against his fear of space just to be here. Space do be goddamn scary, bud. Just, uh, might want to move on in the next 10 minutes or so or you're gonna end up having a really, really bad day. From there, I discovered White Hole Station- I had previously written it off as space junk, and attempted to fly back to Brittle hollow manually when I fell into the hole. It, uh, went well. Turns out it's a big teleportation tower, so I grabbed the projection stone and teleported back to Brittle Hollow just in time to watch the sun go nova. I ended up scrambling to slam that plate into a wall and translate the text before I died, and while I didn't get to actually read it, my ship's computer later told me that the towers on the Ash Twin were actually teleporters linking to critical parts of the project on a variety of different planets, which cements my theory that there's a "perfect loop" where I zap about the solar system, complete the Ash Twin project, and save the day. I don't think I have all of the pieces of the puzzle yet, but once I do, I'm gonna go full ADHD speed goblin for the win. On my next loop, I went to Brittle Hollow again to see if I could find my way to the Southern Observatory. A bit of brute-force wandering got me there, as well as a few VERY risky jumps, which showed me what I needed to get down to the core of Giant's Deep, which is to fly into the DOWN tornadoes, not the UP tornadoes! Well, fuck, I could've figured that out myself with a bottle of whiskey and a loop to kill. I followed that advice and got under the guardian current, only to be stopped by a big electrical ball of Palpatine-style death. Fortunately, this didn't turn out to be too hard to get past- I just rearranged the guts of a jellyfish and slipped right in to the Probe Tracking Module on the surface of a planet who seems to be 95% volume by water. Whatever the core is made of has got to be dense as shit, scientifically speaking. Stay tuned for Expedition Log #4 #2 as we go back to Space Mexico to play with hide and seek with rocks in a dark cave, like a mentally-healthy individual.

how about a healthy serving of Stephen angst to warm you on a chilly autumn night...
14,000,604 ~ ch.four
Stephen reveals one of the most painful aspects of his search for a way to defeat Thanos
"…the initial attack had blasted the whole area down to bedrock, and once Thanos unleashed the full weapon fire from his ship, it cracked the remaining wall of rock that was holding back the lake.” Stephen’s voice had grown ragged, almost hoarse, as he revealed the details of the battle to come. "I’ve lost track of how many times I tried to set all the pieces in place…to marshal my forces so that enough of my fellow sorcerers would be standing ready to hold back that water—but I could never make it work. Moving just one of them away from their battle position changed the course of the overall battle by the littlest bit…“ His hand trembled badly as he held his thumb and index finger together, demonstrating the barest bit of the change that he had dared, ”…but always just enough to throw things off balance, enough that eventually Thanos triumphed—so that it always had to be me to work that spell."
Hope drew a deep breath, her eyes locked on his, and laid her hand against his cheek, like a benediction against the guilt deeply rooted in his soul. She had listened mostly in silence, only speaking up softly when he seemed to lose his train of thought, and patiently urging him to continue only if he felt up to it.
"And that was my last option,” he continued, nearing the crux of what pained him the most, “Only I could keep the battlefield from being flooded—so that the only man on the field who could secure the Stones, and use them to destroy Thanos and all of his forces, would actually have that chance.”
“But he’ll die doing it,” she surmised, “He’s going to die, and you can’t save him…”
Stephen nodded, and then hung his head, “Yes. I’ve tried and tried and tried, Hope…so damn hard…with every power at my command…with every…” He gritted his teeth, exasperated by his own uselessness, “…with every breath I’ve taken since first seeing that outcome…with the full scope of my imagination…to find a solution that won’t cost Tony Stark his life.” Stephen let his shoulders sag, the sting of his shame refreshed as he spoke his failure aloud.
“No,” Hope whispered, clasping both of his hands in hers. "No, Stephen—you have nothing to be ashamed of,” she insisted, her voice growing with conviction, "You’ve done infinitely more than any mortal man could…”
“But it wasn’t enough,” he groaned, shaking his head in denial, “I even explored more than a million outcomes, specifically looking for one where Stark’s fate would fall on me instead—but I could never make it work.” Stephen finally let his tears fall freely, grateful that he was safe in sharing the true depth of his heartache with his ever-gentle confessor. He looked to Hope again, saw only understanding and sweet mercy writ upon her face, and knew he had chosen well to trust in her. "In my old life, I took an oath to do no harm, but when I return to Titan, I’m going to have to save his life, only to ensure that this good man—this father and husband…“
In his mind’s eye, a series of images flickered at the speed of thought, from a newborn baby Morgan in her father’s arms, to her parents joy at each new milestone their child reached, through years of laughter, love, and the challenges of parenthood, and ending with the upbeat farewell that Tony had made to them both, before leaving their secluded haven to head to the Avengers compound in New York. Pepper had calmly kept her tears at bay, not wanting to alarm their precocious little girl; Tony had put on his most casual, cavalier face, but when Morgan tucked her head into the crook of his neck and reminded him that she loved him ‘3,000’, the look he’d exchanged with his wife had devastated Stephen seeing it the first time—and now, just remembering it as well, knowing it was inevitably the last time that Stark would ever hold her.
“…and true hero—will not only craft the method of our salvation, but also die to save the world,” he finished bleakly.
"Oh god,” Hope’s voice cracked with sorrow for his pain. "Stephen, please…please…believe me,” she ran her fingers through the streak of white at his temple, trying her best to assuage him, "You mustn’t do this to yourself…” She closed the little gap between them, drawing his head against her shoulder, sighing hard as she stroked his hair.
“My darling,” she crooned, the first time she had ever used such an endearment for him, “You’ve borne far too much, far too alone, for far too long. If I could just take a little of this burden from you, I’d consider myself blessed.” Through tears of compassion, she repeated his name, “Stephen…my darling, darling Stephen…you mustn’t torture yourself so.”
Soundlessly, he clung to her, his heart grown greedy for the softness she offered by simply being herself. Between this solitary, bitter journey, and the time spent in the loop with Dormammu, Stephen had lived out thousands of years apart from any companionship, let alone understanding and mercy. He had never asked for help or succor in all that time, being only ever focused on protecting and saving lives—nor had he ever expected thanks or any sort of recompense. But for the first time in what felt like an eternity, here was someone who recognized the price he paid to wear the mantle of Master of the Mystic Arts, Time-Stone Wielder and Protector, and guardian of this reality—and often even more.
“Yes, dear,” she murmured, feeling him relax in her arms, while laying the softest kisses he’d ever known on his cheek and near his ear, “Let it go for at least a little while. Know that you’ve done your best, Stephen; that no man could possibly do, or give more, than you already have.”
“It doesn’t feel that way,” he husked against the tender flesh of her neck, breathing in her sunshine warmth and the pale, citrusy scent of her skin. Another memory he would be sure to carry with him into the inescapable future.
“I know, darling,” she whispered against his ear, “I know—but trust me in this, okay?”
Stephen nodded and inhaled deeply, feeling her calm start to fill his lungs, replacing a share of his guilt with relief. When he finally felt ready, he sat back in his chair; Hope was quick to smooth the tears from his cheeks, “You are the best man I've ever known, Stephen Strange. Strong. And kind. And good." Words that felt to him like they came straight from her tender heart. She exhaled slowly, and the knot of anxiety and despair that had been lodged in his chest for a thousand years, began to unclench as he read the truth on her sweet face. "Now, my darling, beautiful, Stephen," she continued calmly. Gently. Lovingly. "There’s something you need to remember…something you might not have thought of…okay?”
He cupped one of her hands against his cheek and nodded again, even managing the ghost of a smile in answer to her request.
“Good.” She gave him the same sort of smile back. "Two things, really. First, that because of you, Tony Stark is going to survive Titan, and have those five beautiful years with Pepper and their daughter. From what you’ve described, it sounds like the life they have, the love they share, is something most people never even get to experience.”
"Alright,” he agreed, for she echoed what the small voice in the back of his mind had been insisting for some time now. "And?”
"And…” she informed him firmly, yet with the same gentleness that marked her regard for him at every turn, “…from everything you’ve told me about Tony Stark, I’m absolutely certain that if given the choice, he would step up to save the world for their sake alone. Don’t you think so?”
He had been so exhausted for so long, and so immersed in his guilt and desperation, that such an idea had not really occurred to Stephen. Now he could almost hear how Stark might exclaim it: If the only way they survive—and that Earth survives—is for me to lose…well, hell, I gotta be on board with that. Stephen closed his eyes, and his breathing slowed and steadied, as he shed another share of the guilt that had become his unflagging companion on this ponderous quest.
"Yes," Hope urged him, "Your burden is heavy enough already without piling on the responsibility for the choice which Stark is bound by his own nature, to make."
He nodded, the warmth of her palm against his cheek soothing him in equal measure to the wisdom of her words. "I don't think I realized until just now how much I needed to hear someone say that," he admitted, looking into her eyes once more, and seeing the gentlest of affirmations there.
Hope's brow furrowed a moment, as though she was perplexed, though her voice held no reproach, "You mean I haven't told you this already, in your previous visits here?"
"I never gave you the chance to," he confessed, regretting that choice in light of her merciful, sympathetic response. "I never confided the entire story to you before."
She hummed softly at that revelation, mulling it over. "Okay...I, uh...I guess I can understand that. But, um..." she lowered her eyes and hesitated a moment, "...what makes this time so different?"
Although Stephen was sure that she had already guessed the reason, he knew he owed her the answer. "Because this time, when I go back," his voice broke with the sad truth of it, "It's going to be for good.
Hope nodded and a couple of tears spilled from beneath her lowered lashes, sympathetic tears for the inevitability of his burden. "I kinda figured that was...that was why." When she met his eyes again, hers shone bright with further tears withheld. "I'm so sorry, Stephen. I wish there was more I could do than just...offer you words...I..." she sighed, "I wish you didn't have to face this all alone."
An unexpected sense of peace filled his chest, and spread throughout his body like the warm flow of blood in his veins. "Oh, honey," he promised her, "I won't be entirely alone. Not anymore. Stephen gathered her other hand in his, and lightly traced his thumb back and forth along the heart and life lines on her palm. "That's your gift to me, Hope. I'm here right now because I knew that you could grant me that last little bit...," he gave her a quiet, bittersweet smile, "...of very human, very humane magic. And that's exactly what I've been needing to see me through to the end of this battle."
Her smile at that was sunshine breaking through thunderheads, so lovely and purely for him that his heart felt like to burst with the bloom of love---the seeds of which had lain dormant since his life had been stolen from him in the shadow of that invading spaceship, too long ago for him to even reckon properly now.
Hope bit her lip, eyeing him with curiosity and her ready humor. "So, tell me, Mr. Remarkable---what comes next?"
"Well," he began, grinning at the nickname she had given him on the day they had met, "I was hoping you would stay with me a while longer. Now that I've nearly reached the end, I believe I can afford a little time to just...be. To simply enjoy your company. Maybe we can sit beneath that silver maple in Washington Square Park again, and I can finally breathe air clean of the haze of battle and feel the sun shine on my face after so much smoke and darkness." And death, he might have added, but for the happiness his suggestion had brought to her face. "And I'm going to take a long, hot shower, because it's been literally a thousand years since I had that luxury."
"Well, I wasn't going to say anything," she teased him, "But you might wanna do just that."
Stephen narrowed his eyes, enjoying her return to playfulness, for it was a form of healing that he had prayed to find in her. Cherishing every moment of their now, while his heart stored all of them up for future comfort---for he still did not know what future awaited him, let alone Hope, once the endgame of this epic, universal struggle played out in full.
“Alright then,” Hope concluded, rising and beginning to clear the dishes away, rinsing them quickly before depositing them in the dishwasher, “Whatever the Master of the Mystic Arts needs, I’m more than happy to provide---it’s the very least that I can do for the salvation of the universe.”
Silently, Stephen stood up while she went about her task, fascinated with---and grateful for---her resiliency, and thanking the universe that had seemed to be so unendurably cruel since Bruce Banner had come crashing through the Sanctum roof, for finally giving him a measure of mercy. He took Hope by surprise, sliding an arm around her waist, and turning her to face him. “Just leave the salvation of the universe in my hands, honey. It’s enough for me that you’re seeing to my own.” With that, he kissed her breathless, before they left the Sanctum arm in arm, in search of sunshine enough to ward off the darkness that awaited him once he resumed his dread task.

I haven't play DT MSQ but I see it being compared to Stormblood. My biggest gripe with Stormblood is that Lyse felt like someone the story was happening to, not a character in the story. My second biggest gripe was because it was divided between Doma and Ala Mhigo neither side's culture was really fully explored in the MSQ. They were both just back drops, a tourist spot to drive through, with a little side quest here and there to like--give you more if you wanted it.
Now amongst the complaints I hear from DT (again I haven't played it so I am just going by social media osmosis at this point) is that it takes its time to introduce you and let you walk among Tural and its various cultural landmarks. Something I adored Shadowbringers for doing. Slowly guiding you through the Crystarium and learning its various functions, meeting the various fae who lived in Il Mheg and how they functions around Titania, Rak'tika Greatwood's twin cults who worship dark and how one can interpret it as gentle, welcoming force and the other can interpret it as a hostile force. The remaining guardians of the ancient empire that litters the greatwood in the Vii of Farow, and while it was dull and kind of hamfisted, I appreciated spending time learning about the Merchants, the caretakers and the track layers of Amh Araeng, and then Kholusia where the poor downtrodden were risen to work together and the rich priviledged were made to face their sins and make amends as we brought together the entire forces of Norvardt to strike down Vauthry and thereby the Sineaters at its technical alternative source. Then we delve deep, deep below the ocean and learned of the Ondo who worship the ruins of the Ancients and finally of the Ancients. Our storied past and the apocalypse Emet-Selch and the Ascians survived.
Secondly, I hear that the twin's role is sort of background while Wuk Lamat is given ample time to shine and go through the motions of the story. Which sounds like it lets the twins be in a supportive role as they were our guides through Sharlayan and various other ventures. Let the twins take a back seat for a moment as we follow Erenville and Wuk Lamat through their own homeland.
All of which sounds amazing. My only gripe being the existence to Solution 9. Now Azys Lla and various Allagan structures have existed in the story for a long time. But I am not entire sure how Solution 9 like...fits with the rest of the expansion. Like finding sky scraper placed in the middle of wide empty wheat field. I am sure once I get around to the MSQ it'll click together but for now I am kind of...cautiously optimistic that it'll coalesce into something that'll make sense. Mesh together nicely. For now, in my mind, Solution 9 feels like it might just be a threat for the sake of having a threat. But, I'll give my final opinion when I actually touch the Dawntrail MSQ at all. I still got Post-Endwalker to get through.
So just...my two cents is that the complaints actually paint a picture that my two gripes from Stormblood are being answered and improved upon and that Solution 9 is kind of weird but we'll have to see.
#{ dawntrail spoilers }#{ down from the grapevine I guess? since I still haven't touched any of the MSQ }#dawntrail spoilers
