alright i have a ✨Diabolical Plan ✨
instead of just installing arch normally, i'm gonna boot into the install iso, format the empty partition i created from win10 as ext4, use fbcat(1) or something to make a screenshot, save it to that partition, and then try to mount that from WSL to post the screenshot on tumblr.

Something that I think is really fundamental about what appeals to people about things like Linux and Firefox and other open source and customizable software is that a lot of us remember the days when we told computers what to do. These days it really feels like we have decided to let computers tell us what to do (and by extension nazi fuck tech billionaires).
Don't let the computer tell you what to do. You tell the computer what to do! I always remember when I was newer to Linux I wanted advice on where to store files that I wanted multiple users to have easy read write access to, so I asked and people were generally just like "I dunno, I guess /opt or /srv. It doesn't really matter its your filesystem" and that really spoke to me. Like, its your filesystem, its your computer. Create a directory on your fs root called /stuff and just dump everything you have in there if you want. Create different partitions for files that are different colors if you want. Store all your nudes in /proc no one gives a shit.

GPFS - Notes - Install Internals
You can actually try IBM Storage Scale for free–obviously there are limits, but you can certainly get a sense of how it all works. To that end I was pulling apart the installer the other day and noticed that I couldn't find mmdiag.
I was confused by this–until I unpacked the .deb file and looked at the post install script. As it turns out IBM makes liberal use of symlinks and mmdiag is just a symlink to tsdiag. I wanted to document that here–so I don't forget and in case anyone else finds themselves needlessly puzzled. I also posted a list of the symlinks I found in the GPFS Base .deb file here.
I am currently trying to understand the various diagnostic tools built into GPFS, and I wanted to look at how things work internally.

I hath encountered a setback: apparently bcache was the wrong approach. The backing device only fills up as much as the cache and then shows as 100%.
I'm currently moving the half that did copy BACK to the temp disk, so I can use LVM instead...

back in the Superwholock days there was this post getting passed around my corner of tumblr about "teflon writing vs velcro writing," ostensibly as a nutshell summary of why fandom reacted so differently to Steven Moffat and Russell T Davies as Doctor Who showrunners: slick and polished and easier to admire (when done well) or coolly assess its flaws (when botched) than to get a grip on or pull apart & tinker with, vs. messy and prickly and grippy and tinkering-friendly and prone to getting its hooks in you whether or not you ever wanted that
and that's very funny to look back on with the distance of hindsight, because to this day--a full decade after peak Superwholock--RTD-era Who and Kripke-era SPN remain THE most insane, crazymaking, irreversible-brain-damage-inducing, "compelling in the way where they make me INCREDIBLY ANGRY and ITCHY TO FIX THEM because i am so stupid-invested that they still have me by the balls, even when my engagement is just picking apart the frustrations of how and why they SUCK" turbo-examples of velcro writing i have ever encountered in my LIFE
hell, they aren't even so much like velcro as they're like snagging the folds of a lace circle skirt on a whole branch of actual cockleburs and trying to wash the shrapnel out with fucking gorilla glue
.....and then there's BBC Sherlock. which was neither velcro writing nor teflon writing but an elaborate many-year con, targeted at the EXACT kinds of people who maintain a secret good Supernatural that lives in their heads, whose one neat trick was to bait its marks into collectively hallucinating a brilliant show so that Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss never had to put themselves to the trouble of writing one.

When we're old men, I hope Millennials will be seen by the new teenagers as the generation that gets it. I want my friends' kids to be like "oh no, it does sound like something in your time went wrong with the world, I believe you". I want my cohort to not get out of touch, but importantly not be falsely perceived by young people as being out of touch, either. I would never handle being seen in my 50's as "some dinosaur who got upset about nothing" by newer people, after all the horrible and important stuff I've seen happen this century.
