Hot damn! What a teaser!

When it began, I thought I was in for just typical animated movie teaser stuff: Characters against white backgrounds and gags, little else, something similar to ZOOTOPIA's teaser. But no!

There are plenty of flashes of new characters (some of them have really neat designs too, that's where your comma and period buttons come in handy for the YouTube video) and new locations, suggesting that a lot of the action will also take place outside of the city of Zootopia. Perhaps the far reaches of that film's world. Like, for example, that European mountain-looking place with the goats in lederhosen. In the first ZOOTOPIA, we only saw the titular city and Bunnyburrow, some of the surrounding countryside too. The filmmakers also alluded to this a while back, but what else is out there? What's the planet Zootopia is set on? It's seemingly not an alternate Earth, because you'd hear mentions of like America and such. Or maybe it is Earth, but the animals just didn't name any of the continents what we did lol. It's clearly not the all-animals Earths of ROBIN HOOD (explicitly set in England) and KUNG FU PANDA (a fantasized China) and such.

Like really, I'm already in love with this series again. ZOOTOPIA is one of my favorite Disney animated movies of the 2010s and I really dug the animal world they created, and this looks like it'll be just as much of a blast, what with the original director Byron Howard back in the chair and Jared Bush graduating from co-director to main director. This trailer I think shows that they have confidence in it, that it'll be, IMO, a swing-back from WISH and MOANA 2. Two just very nothing kinda movies to me, I'd like to be thrilled by a Walt Disney Animation Studios film again.

Now, checking in on the other big Disney studio... Pixar... Conan O'Brien is now confirmed to be in TOY STORY 5.

Ya'know, that makes all the sense, really. Conan was hitting it big in the 1990s, when TOY STORY was on its way to completion, and he was involved heavily with the best seasons of THE SIMPSONS, he's a comedy legend, and TOY STORY has cast some comedians throughout its existence to great effect... So, yeah, I have little else to say there other than... it's perfect casting. He's apparently playing a character called Smarty Pants. That tells me that he's playing some kind of educational toy or game. Maybe Smarty Pants is one of the apps that Bonnie, now glued to a tablet, plays. I'd imagine the toys interact w/ the characters in the apps, they might come to life in a WRECK-IT RALPH sort of manner when a human isn't around. We'll have to see!

I find it interesting that there's been a steady stream of TOY STORY 5 news over the past few months... But nary a peep on the original Pixar movie that's opening before it... HOPPERS.

That movie is currently penciled in for March 6, 2026, and we learned a little while back that its crew were given notes from Disney overlords about its environmental themes. That they had to tone those down because of Disney's current push to be as respectful of our current president in every way, shape, and form. Given that the whole plot revolves around a land developer who threatens the beaver habitat that the protagonist is trying to protect, yeeeah, I'd imagine such notes have either caused massive story problems or completely flipped the movie upside-down. I wouldn't be surprised if... The movie gets delayed, so that they have time - much like what happened to ELIO - to sanitize it and rewrite it so that they don't have a movie that will be called... Dear lord, "WOKE!" "DEI!"

Or, maybe it's not that at all and I'm just being too skeptical. Maybe it's as simple as "TOY STORY 5 is a sequel, part of one of their largest franchises, so obviously Disney and Pixar are gonna be louder about that than this weird little beaver movie." I only get concerned, because some of the stuff I listen to and some of the word I've heard... I get the implication that the main focus is TOY STORY 5 right now. For example, the Fine Tooning podcast had often said in recent episodes, something to the beat of "Pixar did a screening of TOY STORY 5, that's coming along." Very little about HOPPERS, though. Maybe it's just an oversight on their respective parts. HOPPERS might possibly be something of a B-team production, while TOY STORY 5 is the A-film. Nothing wrong with that if that's the case, after all... TOY STORY 2 began life as a B-picture, and in Disney animation history, there's... Let's see... DUMBO, THE GREAT MOUSE DETECTIVE, THE LION KING, etc. Sometimes the B movie is the more creative, scrappy sort-of movie next to the more prestigious picture.

If the landing is stuck, this will be the first time Pixar **successfully** gets two movies out in a calendar year, one in March and one in June. 2015 and 2017 were both double-headers, but at least one movie of the pack lost money or underperformed. INSIDE OUT and THE GOOD DINOSAUR shared 2015, the former was a beloved hit and the latter a divisive money-loser. 2017: COCO did great, CARS 3 kinda just puttered quietly and barely doubled its budget. They tried again for 2020. In 2020, COVID-19 got in the way, literally. ONWARD opened right before shutdowns, and SOUL went straight to Disney+ the following Christmas. TURNING RED was intended for theaters in March 2022, but got rerouted to Disney+, while June 2022's LIGHTYEAR went to theaters and bombed. 2024 was supposed to be ELIO in March, INSIDE OUT 2 in June, but ELIO got de-queered and delayed all the way to this coming June... Soooo... Yeah, maybe 2026 is when Pixar successfully gets a movie out in March and another movie in June.

But like, any updates, Pixar? Disney? It seems like HOPPERS is like the skeleton at the bottom of the pool here, lol.

Our digital lives, often entrusted to large corporations, may face significant risks… in a recent cyber incident in 2023, two hacker groups claimed responsibility for an alleged attack on a major corporation. One hacker group asserted that they successfully compromised the target's systems and offered stolen data for sale.

The movie presents a stylized and exaggerated portrayal of hacking culture, where the young hackers manipulate technology to outsmart and outmaneuver law enforcement officials. The film showcases a perception that law enforcement, at least in the context of the movie, is often portrayed as being behind or clueless in understanding the world of hacking.

And let's remember the Greyball incident: Uber developed the Greyball software to determine if a user requesting an Uber ride was a potential law enforcement officer or regulator. The program used various data points, such as location information, device data, credit card details, and social media profiles, to identify individuals who might pose a threat to Uber's operations. When the program identified a potential threat, it would show a different version of the Uber app to that user. This altered version of the app would display fake cars on the map, making it difficult for the user to locate a real Uber driver.

Additionally... Greyball would provide false information about the location of Uber vehicles or show no cars available at all.

The intention behind Greyball was to obstruct and evade regulators and law enforcement officials who were attempting to enforce taxi and transportation regulations in cities where Uber faced legal challenges.

So, the Greyball incident, which occurred in the real world, involved Uber using technology to identify and circumvent law enforcement officials and regulators actively trying to enforce transportation regulations… it's a real-world application of tactics that mirror the fictional portrayal we see in the 1995 movie Hackers.

How does social media affect our version of authenticity? 

Social media has a huge influence on trends we take part in from the clothes, shoes  we   wear, to the music we listen to. But people also take part in trends that involve doing certain activities or going to certain locations. Oftentimes this leads to people staging “meaningful moments” to seem authentic. For example Black Mirrors, Nosedive where Laysi was posting her breakfast for her social media but didnt even like it. Most of the time the “off guard” picture posts were not really off guard pictures. Most people on social media feel urged to participate in what everyone else on social media that they don't desire to explore further than that. Oftentimes people feel the need to participate in trends to be likeable or simply fit in. 

How might we unknowingly participate in racial divide on social media? 

 On social media, especially Tik Tok we have developed “communities” where people share common interests, fashion trends, foods, and humor. Communities on social media can often unintentionally take part in social media divide or even racial divide especially when making videos trying to imitate or act out behavior we think of based on a certain culture using bias for humor. It might not be made to purposely hurt someone but it does create a divide because the people within your target community might not be that race at all. On social media I have often come across terms like “asian-tok, hispanic-tok, Black-TikTok, Fitness-tok”, etc. Similar to Twitter's “Black Twitter” community where “...Black Twitter represents a ‘“public group of specific Twitter users”’ rather than a ‘“ Black online public”’. (The Social Media Handbook, by Jeremy H. & Theresa s.) Oftentimes people in these certain communities are only open to engage within their racial or cultural groups. A divide is also seen in the way people, brands, other influencers treat white creators vs how they treat creators of color. 

With social media having a large amount of influence with newer generations, could it be possible to experience a new form of interaction? 

 I think most people have already experienced a new form of interaction. Especially after  COVID-19 I believe most people found digital interaction better or found it more important to keep others informed with what they are up to through social media. We have seen how common online dating apps have become within the past few years. In the past people would go out and find someone at any common place. Now people seek for partners online based on a swipe system. In the film Black Mirror, Nosedive by booker people would show their appreciation towards others or opinion based on a digital rating system. And today we also have a similar system for restaurants or any business that provides a service. There have been many apps that have also been created to interact with others through a screen. An example is BeReal, where people would share exactly what they were doing to their friends by sending a picture of themselves at that exact moment. And by doing this it would prove a sense of authenticity since you are capturing the exact location and thing you are doing. 

How do you think the idea of white supremacy has changed through social media?

I think white Supremacy has found its way onto social media. There are many white people who have used social media to target minorities through bias they have of them. Weather to spread misinformation or simply bias. As mentioned before there are videos of people acting as minorities and ideas they have of them for humor but oftentimes don't realize this can be offensive to a group. We also see big brands on social media sponsor or work with white influencers only since they might think they would be a more appealing look or character to represent their brand compared to a person of color. “...emerging technologies hide, speed up, or reinforce racism, but also how race itself is kind of technology one designed to separate, stratify, and sanctify the many forms of injustice experienced by members of racialized groups, but one that people routinely reimagine and redeploy to their own ends.”(Race After Technology,) many times on social media many acts of racism are hidden especially with tailored marketing.

"BELL RINGING" - REVIEW

This drama performed extremely well, reaching #1 in viewership among currently airing short dramas and remaining in the top 2 spots through its entire run. Due to its good results, it stopped being only a webdrama and was broadcast on Chinese national TV and satellite TV as well! 🎉IMO, these accolades are very well deserved!

Plot Premise: The story takes place in Silver Bell Island, pastoral and peaceful with a hint of magic. Chi Ye, who, near the beginning of the story becomes the island's mayor, harbors a secret that none but his assistant know: he is immortal and has lived for hundreds of years, awaiting the return of his beloved, Shen Qi, for whom he made a sacrifice that not even he fully understands the depths of.

Present-day Shen Qi is a happy and carefree young woman, well loved by the community. She plans events and takes care of everyone, as they took care of her when she first arrived at the island. One day, she meets Chi Ye and falls in love at first sight, but, inexplicably, he always makes himself scarce around her. Thus begins her plan to "chase and capture" the reclusive Chi Ye.

✅Recommend! ✅Beautiful visuals, camerawork, etc. ✅Well-written, good flow and pacing ✅Interesting story ✅Good acting from almost all cast ✅Combination of ancient/modern was fun ✅Good characterization despite short length

❌It would have been nice if the second couple was developed more, but this was probably due to time restraints; it would have required a longer drama.

Review (No Spoilers)

I was very impressed with this drama. It was very well written and the production and direction were excellent. Definitely one of my two favorite shorts/minis.

The writers managed the time restraints really well - I haven't read the novel it's based on, and yet I didn't feel like I missed anything at all for comprehension. I really, really liked how it's written like a long movie instead of a series of short episodes. In this sense, it's like a full-length drama, but shorter. This makes it stand out from among other short dramas: the flow is excellent, the plot and the two main characters have depth to them; so you do not get that feeling of superficiality that you see in most mini dramas.

The visuals also stand out. Despite being a modern drama, it has a magical, fairy-like feeling, with soft colors and lighting, rural and village scenery, lots of flowers (LOTS OF FLOWERS!). The camerawork impressed me, because the panning and zooming made even still scenes (like when the couple is just lying in bed) feel very dynamic, while contributing to mood and ambiance. Lots of people have described the drama's visual ambiance as "refreshing" and "healing," and I feel that's correct. The video above really shows a good sample of the feeling you get while watching the drama.

That said, plotwise, this is a very emotional show, and I think the juxtaposition of the peaceful scenes and the emotional turmoil was performed flawlessly. Life and death and fighting against fate are major themes, and the actors really make you feel for the characters.

The main story is set in the present time, with flashbacks to 500 years ago sprinkled throughout. The switching between the two time periods is done very well, and is neither obtrusive nor confusing. The viewer discovers and peels layers of what happened in tribal times as the characters themselves do. This layering is an integral part of the plot, and was written and executed very well.

Storytelling, camerawork, and post-processing filters come together seamlessly once again to create mood in the scenes leading up toward the end. The ending itself is very well written, too, and manages the viewers' feelings well.

Trivia: I forgot to add that voices are everyone's own and were recorded on-location, while filming the action. Recording studio work was limited to when characters were "thinking" and things like that.

Building technology that empowers city residents

Kwesi Afrifa came to MIT from his hometown of Accra, Ghana, in 2020 to pursue an interdisciplinary major in urban planning and computer science. Growing up amid the many moving parts of a large, densely populated city, he had often observed aspects of urban life that could be made more efficient. He decided to apply his interest in computing and coding to address these problems by creating software tools for city planners.

Now a senior, Afrifa works at the City Form Lab led by Andres Sevstuk, collaborating on an open-source, Python-based tool that allows researchers and policymakers to analyze pedestrians’ behaviors. The package, which launches next month, will make it more feasible for researchers and city planners to investigate how changes to a city’s structural characteristics impact walkability and the pedestrian experience.

During his first two years at MIT, Afrifa worked in the Civic Data Design Lab led by Associate Professor Sarah Williams, where he helped build sensing tools and created an online portal for people living in Kibera, Nairobi, to access the internet and participate in survey research.

After graduation, he will go on to work as a software engineer at a startup in New York. After several years, he hopes to start his own company, building urban data tools for integration into mapping and location-based software applications.

“I see it as my duty to make city systems more efficient, deepen the connection between residents and their communities, and make existing in them better for everyone, including groups which have often been marginalized,” he says.

“Cities are special places”

Afrifa believes that in urban settings, technology has a unique power to both accelerate development and empower citizens.

He witnessed such unifying power in high school, when he created the website ghanabills.com, which aggregated bills of parliament in Ghana, providing easy access to this information as well as a place for people to engage in discussion on the bills. He describes the effect of this technology as a “democratizing force.”

Afrifa also explored the connection between cities and community as an executive member of Code for Good, a program that connects MIT students interested in software with nonprofits throughout the Boston area. He served as a mentor for students and worked on finding nonprofits to match them up with.

Language and visibility

Sharing African languages and cultures is also important to Afrifa. In his first two years at MIT, he and other African students across the country started the Mandla app, which he describes as a Duolingo for African languages. It had gamified lessons, voice translations, and other interactive features for learning. “We wanted to solve the problem of language revitalization and bring African languages to the broader diaspora,” he says. At its peak a year ago, the app had 50,000 daily active users.

Although the Mandla App was discontinued due to lack of funding, Afrifa has found other ways to promote African culture at MIT. He is currently collaborating with architecture graduate students TJ Bayowa and Courage Kpodo on a “A Tale of Two Coasts,” an upcoming short film and multimedia installation that delves into the intricate connections between perceptions of African art and identity spanning two coasts of the Atlantic Ocean. This ongoing collaboration, which Afrifa says is still taking shape, is something he hopes to expand beyond MIT.

Discovering arts

As a child, Afrifa enjoyed writing poetry. Growing up with parents who loved literature, Afrifa was encouraged to become involved with the theater and art scene of Accra. He didn’t expect to continue this interest at MIT, but then he discovered the Black Theater Guild (BTG).

The theater group had been active at MIT from the 1990s to around 2005. It was revived by Afrifa in his sophomore year when Professor Jay Scheib, head of Music and Theater Arts at MIT, encouraged him to write, direct, and produce more of his work after his final project for 21M.710 (Script Analysis), a dramaturgy class taught by Scheib.

Since then, the BTG has held two productions in the past two years: “Nkrumah’s Last Day,” in spring 2022, and “Shooting the Sheriff,” in spring 2023, both of which were written and directed by Afrifa. “It’s been very rewarding to conceptualize ideas, write stories and have this amazing community of people come together and produce it,” he says.

When asked if he will continue to pursue theater post-grad, Afrifa says: “That’s 100 percent the goal.”

In the video, Creative Director Bryan Intihar provides a deep dive into our expanded Marvel’s New York, including the ways we’ve evolved the game since we last masked up and played as our Spider-Men. New locations, updated exploration, exhilarating traversal, near-instant switching between heroes, a rogue’s gallery of villains, new abilities and gadgets, and brand-new Suit Styles are just some of the ways we’re upping the game this time around. So, what’s new? In Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, we’re nearly doubling the size of Marvel’s New York. Expanding beyond the East River, you’ll swing and soar over iconic landmarks across Queens and Brooklyn—complete with story missions, side quests, and city activities! This expansion also means even faster traversal options such as the Web Wings, which can be combined with traditional web swinging to move at exhilarating speeds. Players will also be able to switch between Peter Parker and Miles Morales in the open world, near-instantly thanks to the power of the PlayStation 5. Exercise 2

For exercise 2, we were required to make a short film in which the identity of a character is only revealed at the end of the film.

This time, I wanted to be the DoP so that I could get practice for 'Onion'. As my team from exercise 1 has already chosen their DoP, I thought about finding a different group. After reaching out in the class group chat, one person contacted me to ask if I had found a group. After some talks, we decided to work together as she was also struggling to find a group she could direct the film for. As we couldn't find more people, we made sure to make our idea simple and feasible for two people. We had one meeting in which we developed a small idea which would initially mislead the audience into guessing the character, but then find out differently.

We decided to meet at the location (my flat) to storyboard the shots before the shoot. Also, to test out the phone camera app called 'Blackmagic Cam' that has settings that would be in a Blackmagic Camera. Planning beforehand and testing the shots was really helpful because it reduced the time it took on the shoot day.

Above is part of the storyboard, which we also annotated together.

Below is the final product, which had some issues with focus and the cuts in between, but otherwise, it went quite close to what we wanted it to turn out as.

After the screening, the feedback was quite positive. The film succeeded in revealing the identity only until the end of the film. Although the idea was to mislead and create an assumption that the character was a murderer instead of a surgeon, which not a lot of the audience had perceived. Instead, either they did not know what was going on in the narrative until the reveal at the end, or some even successfully got the impression of a surgeon beforehand. Moreover, we were told that the composition and production design gave effective clues into the character's personality, making it a good tip for future films. In addition, the colour choices of red being a motif through the film was another good use of what was learnt in class.

How did you integrate technologies - software, hardware and online - in this project?

Welcome to the final stage! I will now explain how I integrated technologies into my project.

My film '5Th Dimension' strongly depends on the use of various technologies and programs due to the genre of science-fiction, which led to the significant use of hardware technology during the production stage. First of all, for the filming I used my phone's camera because it weighs less than a professional camera. If I used the actual camera, then I would quickly become tired during the arc shot. This is also a huge advantage because I don't have to carry the heavy cameras that were used before the age of digital technology. Nowadays, with all the developments I can easily use my phone for filming. Therefore, I decided to use my phone with a professional stabilizer Moza Mini-Mi, which you can see right in my hands. It allowed me to make my arc shot smooth without any unintentional shakiness. Through the small controller, I was able to direct my camera in any direction needed. Moreover, in combination with its software app MOZA Genie through Bluetooth connection, I could use its convenient interface to access different features at once . For example, it was easy to quickly change the focus during shooting or to use Zoom. It also has a following feature, which I used when I had to maintain focus on specific character while walking around the table.

Another hardware technology that I used is a small LED lamp, which was needed to recreate the light from the window showing an apocalyptic city. This helped me to achieve the gloomy atmosphere and make my opening scene look more realistic. Also it was very convenient to use due to its small size making it mobile so I could carry it in my hand easily. Moreover, an important part of my technology range is, of course, the green screen, which played a crucial role during production and post-production. Even now, I use it to transfer between various locations. In addition, the green screen made my life a lot easier because I did not have to draw the picture myself. Instead, I just put a ready background image. During this process, I also had some struggles, but definitely less than before the age of special effects. The last piece of hardware technology I used is this mysterious device that the main character used to travel back in his time. In reality, this lighting thing is actually a basic lamp for reading books. However, I thought it looked like one of those futuristic displays in science-fiction films, so I decided to use it in my opening scene.

Considering the software technologies I integrated in my project, I have to point out the program I used for editing, which is DaVinci Resolve 19. In this program, I was able to create the atmosphere of science fiction through the use of fusion effects, such as placing a backgroud picture of the apocalyptic city. In addition, specifically in the fusing section, I was able to create a wormhole in the titles using 3D modeling. DaVinci Resolve also helped me to correct the colors, for example, to darken the shadow parts and increase the red colors to match the background. Moreover, I also included special effects such as glow and light rays to ensure that my shot perfectly matches the atmosphere seen in the window. These various features are solely the advantage of digital technologies, without which I wouldn't be able to make my film as nearly great as it is now. It would also take a lot more time to edit.

To create music for my project, I used the software app 'BandLab'. There, I found various packs of sample sounds united by the tone and mood. From them, I selected the ones I felt would set the mournful tone to my scene, and then following my pure imagination and inspiration, I put those sounds in order to create the soundtrack. This app helped me a lot because I strongly believe that sound makes a huge impact on the impression of the film.

Another program that I used, without which my opening scene wouldn't exist, is the program for script writing. I used Kit Scenarist specifically because it has an appealing interface that is easy to understand. However, the most significant feature of this program is that it automatically counts every line, every dialogue, and description. Then, it transfers them to the actual time duration of the film. This was very convenient because I had a strong restriction of 2 minutes for my opening scene, and the note of time in the program kept me on track of how much I needed to write.

Speaking of online technology, I used various websites for inspiration as well as to learn new skills. For example, I used YouTube to get more experience in editing. Different tutorials helped me to get the idea of how to successfully use DaVinci Resolve and, more importantly, how to turn green screen into an actual image. I also used YouTube when searching for the conventional opening titles. Basically, I typed for the opening scenes of my favorite sci-fi films and noted how they approached this topic. YouTube is also my way of distribution because I uploaded my film there so that it is easily accessible for the audience. Therefore, nowadays, due to easy access to the internet, it is much easier to learn new things. Previously, I would have to go to the library or ask a professional to teach me, which is not that fast and convenient. Another aspect of online technology I used is social media. To promote my project as well as my blogs, I used Instagram and Telegram to inform my followers of my experience and process, which helped to increase awareness and interest to my product. Other social media websites, such as Pinterest, I used for inspiration when I created my moodboards. This particular website helped me to visualize my film and so to understand its universe better.

Overall, I integrated various technologies in my project, including software editing apps, hardware shooting equipment, and online websites for promotion and inspiration. Modern technologies have allowed professionals to produce media products in a cost-effective and time-efficient way, which lead to the development and growth of the entertainment industry. On that account, technologies helped me to create my opening scene the way it is, most importantly solely by myself, which wasn't an option before the modern age. It also allowed me to learn new things and to get unforgettable experiences during this whole process of production.
