Every Body Is Valid and Beauty Should Never be a Straight Jacket

This is a subject that deeply hits home for me. Representation of “plus-size” women and men in popular culture is something we’re beginning to hear much more about. As I write this I’m thinking about my own personal experiences as an “obese” child, and the downstream consequences it had for my life. Kids are cruel, but so is the world that shapes and incentivizes their behavior. I’ll spare the reader my life story, except to say that in my twenty-nine years, I’ve been diagnosed with anorexia and a couple of related eating disorders, body dysmorphia, have lost 125 pounds through methods no good for any body, and have seen the inside of a hospital room a time or two for symptoms related to it. In short, I know what it’s like to hurt intimately over my weight and body image. And as a male, I tend to be taken less seriously on opening up about it.

So when I see things like this, they really catch my eye. I absolutely love it. The person in this ad is authentic. She is unapologetically, defiantly wearing Calvin Kleins, staring the public directly in the eye. The look I see in her eyes (and I hope I’m correct) almost says “I dare you to be uncomfortable with this.” Having a 0-waist should never be a pre-requisite for validity. There is a damaging misconception floating around that people who are plus-sized or overweight are simply so because they lack self-control and/or are sedentary. But this simply is not the truth. Although lifestyle and tendency to be more or less active can influence this significantly, so many of us who hurt for our weight and self-image are incorrectly assumed to be lazy or gluttons. To have physical qualities that we cannot control, or at least not without the expense of our health, and have those qualities essentially disqualified from the culturally-restricted category “beautiful” can be a heartbreaking thing to live with and watch. But look at this ad. She’s wearing comfortable designer clothes. Images of people as they are shouldn’t be restricted to “before” photos. Sure, there will be plenty of people who scoff. Sling nasty little jokes at her expense or shake their head at the company’s decision. But she is visible. Visible as a manifestation of beauty. Personally, I’m over the moon to see this sort of inclusion in pop culture. “Skinny” is a highly hegemonic, potentially deleterious standard of beauty to force everyone to suffer to adhere to, and what’s more, those hegemonic images we have of what constitutes beauty are nowhere near a representative sample of the overall population.

(image copied from Google) Before I close on this point, I want to mention the lack of plus-sized and overweight male protagonists and models as well. That type of exclusion is not specific to either sex. Here’s a quick true story: I once made the point to someone that all male protagonists in Disney and hero flicks were pretty much universally cut and muscular, or at least thin. Their one counter-example? Shrek.

I personally consider it an extremely important step forward to open up the stage to serious discussions of body image, and representation of the very real spectrum of body types.

Five things on PSG Handball - Elverum

On Thursday evening, Paris Saint-Germain Handball return to the EHF Champions League action,. Playing host to Elverum – former Parisian Luc Abalo’s new club – in Matchday 4 action.

Get back on track For the moment, the numbers aren’t looking the best for Les Rouge et Bleu, who lost their first two matches – at home to Flensburg (28-29), then away Meshkov Brest (32-31). But it’s not time to panic just yet! With a game in hand over most of their competitors, the capital club have a chance to get the ball rolling when the Norwegian side come calling. This also applied to Elverum, however, who have also played just two matches (victory in Porto, 28-30, and defeat against Kielce, 22-31).

Luc’s return This match will have a very special feeling, as it is the return of Luc Abalo to the Stade Pierre de Coubertin. The former Parisian right-winger, now 36 yers old, is returning to his old stomping ground for the first time since making the move to Elverum this summer. Prior to that, the French international had made his mark on our Club by winning seven French league titles and playing in three EHF Champions League Final4s. Although, thanks to COVIS, he had noted a chance to say goodbye to his teammates and fans, all concerned will now have the opportunity to make up for it.

Head-to-head Last season, Paris and Elverum were in the same group. The first leg, in Norway, was very close! Exceptionally moved to Lillehammer’s Hakons Hall (with 12,000 spectators), the game was not all fun for the Parisians, who had to rely on an excellent Rodrigo Corrales to get out of the trap (22-25). In Coubertin, on the other hand, Raul Gonzalez’s men achieved a large success (31-25). There again, it was one of our last ramparts – Vincent Gérard – who stood out, making nine crucial saves.

Key stats Despite their setbacks, Paris can rely on an attacking line that scores plenty of goals. After two games, the team’s top scorer is none other than Mikkel Hansen, who has found the net ten times. The Danish international is closely followed by his new Latvian teammate Dainis Kristopans, who has nine goals, seven of which were scored in Brest. For the Norwegians, Lucio is already off to a good start, with four goals to his credit. But the team’s top two scorers are Dominik Mathe and Alexander Christoffersen, with ten goals each.

室屋選手、初開催カンヌで新兵器を投入。大接戦の模様を呈したラウンドの結果は？［レッドブルエアレース2018・フランス］

Jorge Hernández Fernández: Guaros clasifica invicto al Final Four

Lo que estaba certificado de manera extra oficial, Guaros lo hizo oficial. Obtuvo su pase a la ronda definitoria de la LDA 2019.

Guaros de Lara venció al actual campeón San Lorenzo 66 por 57 y finalizó invicto su actuación en las semifinales de la Liga de Las Américas, los larenses se quedaron con el primer lugar del grupo F y por tercera vez logró clasificar al Final Four en las últimas tres ediciones de este torneo.

El quinteto abridor de Guaros fue comandado por Heissler Guillent, Justin Williams, Aaroon Harper, Néstor Colmenares y José Vargas, por otra parte el equipo argentino saltó a la cancha con Dan Tucker, Marcos Mata, Nicolás Aguirre, Mathias Calfani y Jerome Meyinsse.

Los larenses lideraron el primer período con una gran actuación de Aaron Harper el cual finalizó con 7 puntos, la gran defensa de Guaros no dejó anotar a San Lorenzo sino hasta el minuto 6:36 con triple de Calfani, el equipo argentino acortó la distancia en el segundo cuarto y logró colocarse al frente en el marcador 19 por 18, pero rápidamente los dirigidos por Duró sacaron ventaja nuevamente con una seguidilla de triples de Harper y Guillent.

Jorge Hernández Fernández: Guaros quiere quedarse con la LDA y va con todo

Al regresar del descanso Guaros sacó ventaja de 12 puntos, ventaja que poco a poco el equipo argentino fue reduciendo en el último período al colocarse por tan sólo un punto con triple de Sims restando 3 minutos de Juego, luego de un robo de balón de Gregory Vargas, Guaros pudo despegarse de nuevo en el marcador con un doble de Creen y triple de Guillent para así quedarse con la victoria.

Aaron Harper volvió a ser el mejor del partido aportando 17 puntos y 4 rebotes. Néstor Colmenares aportó 8 puntos y ayudó en la defensa del equipo obteniendo 9 rebotes. Por San Lorenzo su mejor anotador fue Donald Sims viniendo de la banca aportando 10 puntos.

Guaros regresará a Barquisimeto para seguir preparándose de cara a siguiente objetivo, el Final Four.
