I feel sorry for Dae-Ho because this guy Clearly had serious issues with men touching him in S2, friendly embraces from men bothered him viscerally. He dodges away from Jung-Bae's very jovial physicality Twice in the season. Once could be a blip. In a TV show, twice is never an accident, it's a pattern. He also expertly changes the subject one of those times, too. It's how we end up learning everybody's names.
He's clearly trying to take care of Jun-Hee in a brotherly fashion and is frequently found in the bg making sure she's okay, he's considerate of her and caring of her pregnancy. He's good at girly games, apparently. He's asked why he was a marine after he says he can do the girl game and had all those sisters and makes a comment about a father wanting to Toughen Him Up and very quickly moves from That subject too.
(I imagine that pentathlon is the first time anybody's ever validated him for what he Can actually do well, from the looks of it)
Such a nasty picture is painted only with those bare facts. He's a friendly guy, wants to do the good thing, has skills labelled 'feminine' and you Know exactly what crap this guy got growing up for being like those four sisters of his.
Him flinching from Jung-Bae Really says so many unpleasant things.
So he Genuinely tries to step up and take part in the revolution and he's very obviously having some kind of mental breakdown the entire time (so obviously that it's actually kind of clunky imo that apparently Nobody notices it) and is hyperventilating hiding behind cover and not even looking where he fires the gun. He goes back for the ammo and can barely talk and looks like a shell of a person, and tries to go back and just hits a solid wall. Absolute limit. Can't do it.
In S3 we learn that his military service was deferred into some kind of social service, as he was judged unfit/unable to serve. I didn't need to look it up to work out that that'd come with a hell of a social stigma, but people have confirmed such in fandom anyway.
Whoever decided he wasn't mentally fit to be in a gun fight was right, actually. Quite clearly, he couldn't handle that.
His story is just another example of a discussion of stupid social stigma leading to ruin. Of men who aren't capable of whatever being in the military being called Less than because what, they're not able to fire a gun? Not willing to shoot someone? Can't deal with the way the military structures you not as a human, but as a chess piece on a board.
The tragedy is, of course, that Dae-Ho was not lesser or pathetic for not having the temperament for military service. The tragedy is it got so bad for him, and he was looked down on so much by that father of his (and most everybody else apparently), that he decided to start to fake being a marine to escape the stigma of it all.
That instead of living a life where he can accept his own limitations and acknowledge his Actual skills, he ends up in a brutal gun fight to Prove that he can do it when he Can't and that this has spiralling consequences when the rest of them can't get more ammo, and is a factor in the revolution failing.
If Dae-Ho had a a healthy respect for his Actual skills, and not just total disdain for what he Can't do, he'd not have volunteered to take part in that revolution because he'd know he can't do it.
I mean, I kind of get why they had the characters ignore his obvious mental health issue because it voices the outlooks that created the problem to start with directly in the show, but i've been very surprised to see people calling him OOC in S3 when to me, we finally got the missing puzzle piece that made him make total sense.
In the end, him and Gi-Hun who both blame themselves for what's happened use each other as scapegoats and aim their anger and derision and self disgust at each other instead, and it's brutal and ugly and ends in a murder.
And the utter irony for me is that the moment Dae-Ho attacks Gi-Hun and surrenders to that ugliness is the moment the people who've looked down on him as less than a man would have thought he was finally bucking up.
At his absolute Worst moment in the whole show.

THIS!
If Gi-hun was a boy dad he wouldn't have killed Dae-ho but the need to always have daughters overrode everything. I get it now. He has to vanquish all men so his daughters can thrive.

I think they should have just committed to Gi-hun being a monster after Dae-ho's death. Have In-ho regret the monster he created. Make it into some Frankenstein metaphor. If you're going to have him kill a person who was a genuinely Good person, who made mistakes, then you can't fucking tuck your balls in between your legs when he needs to kill an actual terrible human being.
Either have him be a monster or have the act of Dae-ho's death linger heavily on him. Choking is such a personal way to kill a person. You're telling me Gi-hun felt NOTHING throughout the season for what he did? He choked a man and then held a baby in the those same hands you're telling me there was zero guilt there? Nothing at all?
I really wanted to give the rest of the season a chance because I thought they'd either commit or have Gi-hun realise that he's just played into what the system wants but he doesn't bring up Dae-ho ever again. That feels so out of character for Gi-hun.
Can't believe they assassinated two characters with one choice.

Anyway here are a list of writing decisions that should have been done to conclude Dae-ho's story instead of whatever the fuck they did.
Back in season 2 they should have left it vague on what happened with Dae-ho and the magazines. Then revealed in season 3 that he sold out the group so he could live. I don't like this idea but it at the very least would be an actual betrayal on Dae-ho's part and you could still play into some commentary here on how the poor will sell out other poor people to gain higher ground (but in the end they're still stuck in the same situation.) Like I said my least favourite of the writing choices but at least it makes sense.
Gi-hun is channeling all his guilt onto Dae-ho, Dae-ho is quite literally the manifestion of everything Gi-hun knows he did wrong. During every scene with Dae-ho and Gi-hun, Dae-ho should be muted. He's speaking but Gi-hun can't hear him as he beats down on him. Maybe have the sounds of Jung-bae dying over and over again replay. It's the only thing that consumes him. But then, when Gi-hun is choking Dae-ho out, instead of Dae-ho saying "it's your fault" he says both "it's not my fault and it's not your fault." Dae-ho is the one who knows they're both victims in this situation and relays that to Gi-hun who finally hears him. This one is Okay to me, I think it'd be a little muddled for a TV show and would quite honestly fly over 90% of people's heads for the general audience. Dae-ho can still die somewhere in this game but at least it wouldn't be by Gi-hun.
Gi-hun realises he can't kill Dae-ho because Sae-byeok's words speak to him. He backs off and forgives both himself and Dae-ho. Literally the simplest fucking choice and I thought this WAS the route they'd go. I was waiting for him to stop strangling Dae-ho and he just didn't??? Seong Gi-hun would not fucking strangle a scared, confused man who didn't actually do anything wrong.
Dae-ho is a marine with PTSD and Gi-hun realises this when he goes to hit him. Like. How was this NOT in the script? Would this not make the most fucking sense? Have Dae-ho explain he never held a gun or something while serving but he was still a marine. There's many writing choices that could work here. Also, if they did this, I think Dae-ho should survive the 4th game and die on the 5th, sacrificing himself to get rid of Player 096.
Not really a writing confrontation scene but I honestly thought Dae-ho would kill himself by jumping. You have multiple scenes of Dae-ho opening doors to that area but not a single person falls? Hey Chekov, I think you forgot to fire the gun! I thought for sure he'd choose to just jump and Gi-hun would sober up so fucking quickly and realise what a mistake he made.
There's probably like 50 more ideas you could come up with that's better than that horseshit but here we are.

I don’t blame dae-ho at all like that shit was doomed from the start. He got the mags then realized he was going to walk right into his death. Who wouldn’t panic in that situation?
LITERALLY not to mention the front man was there so the plan was doomed from the start

𝚂𝚞𝚖𝚖𝚊𝚛𝚢: What if Daeho ended up in the same situation Saebyeok got into when she became a finalist?
(This is my first ever posting a fic i wrote so i apologize in advance for any grammatical error)
Tumblr media
"𝙲𝚘𝚗𝚐𝚛𝚊𝚝𝚞𝚕𝚊𝚝𝚒𝚘𝚗𝚜 𝚙𝚕𝚊𝚢𝚎𝚛𝚜 𝚏𝚘𝚛 𝚙𝚊𝚜𝚜𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚏𝚒𝚏𝚝𝚑 𝚐𝚊𝚖𝚎."
The square guard greeted as soon as they entered the dormitory, it's room spacious as there's only five players left.
Daeho, Gihun, Hyunju, Myunggi, and Namgyu.
All of five of them sat on their own respective beds as the square guard states all of the eliminated players and the increased prize money.
"Now that the five of you have reached the final game, we congratulate you for making it as finalists. And for that, we prepared a special gift all of you. But before we reveal the special gift, please change into this clothes that we've prepared for you."
Gihun knew this well. That damn meal that they prepared to them in his previous game. His stare on them is sharp and aware, not wanting to back down on them. He could feel the guard's eyes drift tohim, staring back at him behind that black mask.
Tumblr media
The four of them change in the bathroom, Gihun staring intently at Myunggi and Namgyu as he knew that two could start a fight any second now.But that's not any of his concerns right now. His eyes drifted to an occupied stall, where Daeho is cleaning, worry filling his thoughts. He wanted to talk to the boy, but he himself don't know how to approach him when Daeho has been distancing his self since the failure of the rebellion.
Gihun let out a small sigh through his nose, intending to leave with Myunggi following behind, leaving Namgyu on the sink as he fix his hair and bow tie.
As he was about to leave, he had notice that there's a pool of blood running along with the water in a occupied stall, too much blood for his liking. Something's definitely up, he thought.
.
.
.
"I'm sorry... I'm s-so sorry..."
Daeho had lost count on how many times he had apologized. He didn't meant to do that. hadn't meant to, yet he did.
It was self defense, he believes. If he din't fought back from that player, he would've died instead. But now all what clouded his mind is the inevitable guilt he felt for the player.
Daeho press his hand on his wound on his wound on his abdomen, where the player had stabbed him thrice. It wasn't that bad, and he had stopped the bleeding as soon as possible with his make-shift bandage using his t-shirt. But it gotten worse during the fifth game. He could feel his blood seeping out of him. He had to do somethingbefore he pass out of blood loss.
He tore whatever he could from his torned t-shirt, rinsing it with water and wrapping it around his abdomen. His breath is ragged and shaky, his lips trembling as he mutters apologies to whoever could hear him.
Tumblr media
"This is a meal that we've prepared just for you. Please do enjoy."
All of five of them sat across eachother in a square shaped table, different types of meals prepared just for them.
Namgyu immediately dived in, not sparing any food on his plate. Myunggi and Hyunju slowly dig in on their food, the aftermath of what happened from the previous game still clings to them like a fresh wound. Gihun barely moved from his seat, his eyes watching the others intently and not having the appetite to even eat.
Daeho on the other hand, barely can move. With not just his wound dissipating his hunger, his where all clouded with all of the dark and inevitable nightmare in his mind.
After all of them finished their meal, well except for Gihun and Daeho, the guards have taken all of the dishes and utensils, except for the knife.
They all looked at eachother, Namgyu's eyes glinting something they knew is dangerous. Hyunju woriedly look over Daeho, her eyes scanning him.
Daeho's breath ragged, his hand hesitantly taking the knife.
.
.
.
As they all rest on their respective beds, Daeho leaned on the cold wall, his hand clutching on his wound and the other tightly holds the knife, just for defense, just incase.
As an figure approached him within the dark dim light of the dormitory, his body jolted instinctly, aware of the figure walking to him. But he didn't rise his knife, no. It was never in his nature to hurt people anyway. It was never his intentions to hurt.
His tensed body then relaxed as he recognized the figure, it was none other than Gihun. Gihun stood close from his bed, contemplating what he's going to say.
"Can I... Can I sit with you?"
Daeho nodded, scooting over to his side to make room for him Gihun to sit beside him on the bed. Gihun sat beside him, letting out a small sigh.
"Daeho... You've never talked to us ever since then. Is it... because of what happened?"
Gihun started, Daeho's eyes drifting away from from him as he look down on his hand.He wanted to talk, to apologize until Gihun get sick of his voice, but his lips won't budge to move to say those words.
"Daeho.. I.." Gihun was then cut off by Daeho,
"I-I'm sorry, Hyung." Daeho softly mutters, his head hanging low.
"I'm sorry that I.. I didn't brought the a-ammos back. If only I did in time, J-Jungbae hyungnim..."
Daeho couldn't continue his sentence, just saying his brother's name hurts him so.
"No."
Gihun replied, his lip pursued to a firm line as he turn his head to look at him. "I'ts not your fault. I'm the one to blame."
Daeho finally meet his eyes, softly muttering "Hyung..."
"I'm the one who started the rebellion, and I'm the one who put you in that situation. I should be the one to be sorry."
'I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have let you get involved if I had known."
Daeho shook his head at Gihun, his lips trembling into a small pout. "Hyung... I'ts my fault. I joined that rebellion knowing what it can it do to me."
Gihun hummed in understanding, knowing that they both had a part of it. A comfortable silence stretched between them. Well, to Gihun. Daeho though?
Daeho's breath become more shaky and ragged silently. His hand clutching onto his wound beneath his tuxedo as he can feel his blood running out of him. He shift his position, leaning his head instead of his back on the wall so he's practically laying on the bed. Gihun didn't seem to notice his pained state, as the dim light completely shadows the blood on his tuxedo.
"Later, or tomorrow, let's end this game. Let's all vote to to stop this game and get you all home."
Gihun then says, his eyes focused to Daeho, a small reassuring firm smile formed on his lip to assure Daeho. Daeho looked at Gihun's reassuring smile, his eyes stinging with unshed tear threathening to spill, his lips trembling.
"Yeah... Let's go home. I-I would like to go home now, Hyung."
Gihun's eyesbriefly widened. He knewhe had heard those same words.
Saebyeok...
"Mhm. We'll go home.
Gihun replied to him, his eyes looking away to watch their surroundings. Daeho's ragged breath got caught in his throat and he can now feel his eyes heavy. He can barely feel nor move his body, a stray tear falling out of his eye.
It hurts. It hurts.
He wants to end his suffering now. He wants to stop playing these games, to go home.
He just want to go back to his sisters now.
Gihun noticed his eyes falling low, thinking that Daeho is about to fall asleep.
"Rest. You'll need it later." Gihun softly told him. Daeho only looked at him,his brows furrowing as he seems hesitant. "Don't worry, I'll watch over you on my bed. I'll guard you."
Gihun assured him as he stood from the bed, intending to head to his bed.
"Hyung.."
Gihun turned to face him as Daeho softly called him, walking over to Daeho's side. "Yeah?"
"C-Can you please stay... a little l-longer?"
Daeho requested under his breath. It's getting harder for him to say a few words, but Gihun thankfully can still hear his small and weak voice.
"Sure."
Gihun walk up to him, settling beside him. Daeho's hand reached onto his arm, his hold onto him is weak. Gihun rest his hand on his, giving it a firm but gentle squeeze.
Daeho's eyes shut as he exhale shakily, his body tensing from the imense pain of his wound.
Gihun seemed to have notice his shaky breaths, concern etched on his face as he gently squeeze his hand.
"Hey son, are you okay?"
"Hy..Hyung..." He mumbles, lips trembling as he tightly clutch on his wound. "I-It hurts... Hyung, it hurts... so much."
Gihun immediately get to his side, cradling his limp and tensed body, inspecting him if he's injured.
"Daeho, what's wrong? Are you hurt? Where? Daeho tell me!"
Gihun pats his body, looking for where is he's hurt. Gihun then patted on his abdomen, seeing as Daeho's hand are rested on, the pool of blood staining his hand. Seeing his blood-stained hand, Gihun's worry spiked up.
"D-Daeho, where- when did you got hurt? What happened?!"
"Hy..Hyung. I-It hurts. I wanna go home.."
Gihun cradled his head, his other hand on his wound as he whispers assuring words to him, even if it didn't make sense.
"Don't worry, just- hold on, okay? Just hold on, don't close your eyes- don't sleep, okay? I'll do something, anything!"
Gihun doesn't know what he's going to do. His mind only filled with worry for Daeho. He knows that he had to do something to stop the bleeding. Anything. He had to do something to stop it so Daeho could last until voting so once they get out of here, they'll bring him to a hospital.
He knew damn well that these people is not goong to help them, so he HAS to do something.
"Stay here, okay? Don't move, stay right here! I'll go get a clean bedsheet from my bed. Stay right here, okay?"
Daeho nods his head, or so he thinks he as he can barely move his entire body. Just a small budge could make him pass out by now.
Gihun immediately hope off the bed, intending to go to his bd to get the clean fabric. Daeho's hands limp. his hand slipping away from Gihun as he softly and barely mumbles "Hyung..."
Gihun rushed to the other side of the room where his bed is located, just close to Hyunju's. He immediately took the bedsheet off from his bed, ripping a clean part of it to se as a bandage. His hands fumble due to panick, his fingers slipping on the fabric.
"Gihun? What's happening?"
Hyunju asked as she walk to him. Gihun briefly turn his head to her but turn back to what he is doing.
"Daeho is hurt. I don't know when did he got hurt but he's bleeding a lot. I have to stop the bleeding."
"What?"
Hyunju's eyes widened, worry evident on her face. She knew there is something that is going on with him ever since she's looking over him during the fifth game. She should've went to him since then, now guilt is engulfing her.
Gihun rushed back to Daeho's bed with Hyunju just following behind him, the sheet he tore off on his hand. His steps are loud and fast, intending to get on Daeho's side immediately. He won't let this happen. Not again.
As he was about to reach to Daeho's bed, his eyes widened at the sight, his steps faltering and his throat going dry. He couldn't see Daeho's laid body on the bed, not just because of the dark room, but also because of someone standing by the bed, it's back facing on Gihun's view with his number displayed on the back of it's tuxedo.
Player 124.
"DAEHO!!!"
Gihun shrieked, pushing Namgyu away from Daeho's bed. Gihun cradled Daeho's lifeless body, his hand clutching onto his stab on his neck as Daeho"s blood seeps out from it. Gihun let out pained sobs, his tears now flowing out of his eyes.
No. No.. This couldn't happen. This shouldn't have happened. Daeho was supposed to be with them til' morning, to vote to go home. To meet with his sisters again.
"𝙸 𝚠𝚘𝚞𝚕𝚍 𝚕𝚒𝚔𝚎 𝚝𝚘 𝚐𝚘 𝚑𝚘𝚖𝚎 𝚗𝚘𝚠, 𝙷𝚢𝚞𝚗𝚐…"
"Daeho... DAEHO!!" Gihun sobbed loudly, his grief from his voice can be felt in the entire room. Hyunju only gasps at the sight of a lifeless Daeho, her eyes stinging with tears.
The whole dormitory lit up, the sight of Daeho lifeles yet still bleeding is now more clear to Gihun, Gihun only cradle his cold body, letting pained sobs.
Hyunju whipped her head towards Namgyu, her eyes wide and sharp on him as she lunged to him, grabbing him by hix tuxedo's collar while Namgyu try to break free her hold.
"Why would you do that?! WHY?!!"
Hyunju shouted at Namgyu as he struggle from her tight grip.
"Why?! Why would— Why wouldyou kill him?!!"
Namgyu eventually broke free from her grip, pushing her away as he shouted back. "Can you get the fuck away from me, huh?! What do yoo think?! That guy is already dying, didn't you noticed? I just put him out of his misery!"
Myunggi only stand beside them, watching and not wanting to interfere as Hyunju softly sobs.
"Misery? Put him out of his misery?! Are you out of your mind?! Daeho could've been saved by the morning we get out of here!!"
"Saved? That guy has been bleeding to death! If anything, you should be thankful to me and him! He sacrificed his life to be an addition for the prize money, and I just got the job done right away! So don't whine on me about it!"
"Sacrifice?" Gihun then mumbles, laying the lifeless body on his hand gently on the bed and walked to them.
"SACRIFICE?! He wanted to live!! He wanted to go home!! So don't you say shit like that because that's not what he wanted!!"
Gihun lashed on him as he grab him by his collar. He knows that that is not what Daeho wants, his words repeating over like a broken record in his mind.
"𝙸 𝚠𝚘𝚞𝚕𝚍 𝚕𝚒𝚔𝚎 𝚝𝚘 𝚐𝚘 𝚑𝚘𝚖𝚎 𝚗𝚘𝚠, 𝙷𝚢𝚞𝚗𝚐…"
Gihun then blow a punch on, making Namgyu stumble back. Namgyu looked at him with widened eyes and clenched teeth,
"You son of a—."
Before Namgyu could punch Gihun, triangle guards starts to enter the room and stoppedthe both of them with the butt of their guns while two other guards brings the black coffin.
Gihun looked over Daeho's bed, his lifeless body now being carried by the guards to put in the black coffin. His eyes stinging with tears again as he called his name. "NO!! DAEHO!!"
The guards held Gihun back from interfering, holding him by his arms as he sobbed loudly.
Gihun's pained sobs fills the room, the robotic female voice of the PA boomed across the room, declaring the tragic outcome of Daeho's state.
