“In Hollywood, action filmmaking was kind of looked down upon until The Matrix, and then people realized that action could also be part of the story,” [director] Stahelski notes. “I come from a place of loving dance and theater and fine art — action can be all of those things — and one of my favorite painters is Caravaggio.” When he was looking for a cinematographer for John Wick: Chapter 2, Stahelski recalls, “I asked myself, ‘Who paints with light?’ The answer is Dan Laustsen.” In strictly cinematographic terms, Parabellum functions less like an action movie and more like a Hollywood studio musical. The film’s first battle is a close-quarters knife fight in an antique weapons shop, where the camera cuts from wide shot to wide shot, sustaining the action in long takes so that the audience can better appreciate the physical prowess of Reeves’ performance — an elaborate fighting style that combines Japanese judo and jujitsu, Brazilian jujitsu, Russian sambo, Filipino kali, and Muay Thai, more for the benefit of show than for self-defense. “Ninety-nine percent of high-level stunt work is dance — not pirouettes, but how you move your body,” asserts Stahelski, who continues to train stuntpeople with Leitch through their company 87eleven. “I love the aesthetic of motion. A lot of our shots [in Parabellum] are lifted straight from Singin’ in the Rain and West Side Story. We’re mixing Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin with Hong Kong cinema from John Woo, Jackie Chan and the Shaw Brothers.” “We wanted to go wider than Hollywood action films normally do and really show off the choreography,” Laustsen agrees. “When the camera, lighting and actors are all moving together, it really is a dance.”

“After we made Chapter 2,” Laustsen notes, “we discussed how we could make 3 even more visually powerful. The main setting was still New York, but we wanted to bring out the city even more forcefully. We decided to shoot all at night, with rain as much as possible. Rain is fantastic because it gives a third dimension to the picture, but it is a challenge to do it, especially in a city like New York.”

The Master Anamorphics’ low-distortion design also prevents dramatic, streaking lens flares, and so the technicians at Arri Rental in Secaucus, N.J., fashioned a flare filter — comprising three strands of nylon fishing line stretched across an empty filter frame — for the XT’s and Mini’s Internal Filter Modules. When a front-of-lens filter produces a flare, Laustsen observes, it “just looks like the light is catching on a piece of flat glass in front of the lens. It’s more beautiful when the flare comes from the lens itself” — and that’s the effect that was replicated with the behind-the-lens nylon lines. “With the filters inside the camera,” the cinematographer adds, “it was also easier for first assistant Craig Pressgrove to do the lens changes.”

The exterior of the Continental was shot in lower Manhattan, but the hotel’s interiors were filmed in downtown Brooklyn, in the former Williamsburgh Savings Bank tower — which now serves as an event space —whose glass-and-wrought-iron front doors open to a 128'-long vaulted banking hall with limestone facing, marble floors, carved teller stations, and a 63'-high ceiling supported by Romanesque columns. For its role as the Continental’s lobby, the hall was furnished by Kavanaugh with two round settees crowned with statues of the Roman war gods Bellona and Mars, a fully-stocked bar, and a lounge on the mezzanine.

Parabellum’s stages were located at Gold Coast Studios in Long Island, N.Y. The first of the production’s two notable stage-bound sets is the Continental’s terrace, for which the Rockefeller Center rooftop garden was used in Chapter 2. The schedule didn’t allow for much time to shoot Parabellum’s scene, which takes place at sunrise. “You cannot make the sun rise [for] a movie,” Laustsen notes wryly. “It’s one or two shots, and then you have daylight, and then you’re fighting to control the light.” So, for more control, the scene was moved onstage, where the set was surrounded with a sectional 45'x350' bluescreen lit with SkyPanel S120s; a 120' black velour curtain was used to control blue spill coming from off-camera. Early-morning ambience was provided by 176 overhead SkyPanel S60s, and the light of the rising sun was simulated by a 20K tungsten Fresnel and a 24K Dino light with medium bulbs, both gelled with 1⁄2 CTS. The other key set built at Gold Coast was the “manager’s office,” a labyrinthine two-story glass-and-steel structure meant to represent the top floors of the Continental, with a 270-degree view of the adjacent skyscrapers. It’s in this space that Wick and Zero ultimately face off mano a mano. “The concept was to create a space where everything is exposed, a place where there are no secrets,” Kavanaugh explains. To help him integrate the lighting into the design of the set itself, Laustsen worked with a virtual-reality computer model based on Kavanaugh’s design. “Chad, Kevin and I had discussions about color — cool lights inside, warm light outside,” says the cinematographer, who wanted what he describes as an “organic” light element for both spaces. The art department therefore added a 35'x14' LED wall to the set’s second floor and a 28'x12' LED billboard to the rooftop; the latter was positioned between the glass structure and a 40'x440' Rosco SoftDrop that was backlit by 150 SkyPanel S60s through Magic Cloth sourced from The Rag Place. Almeida and his rigging crew installed more than a mile of LiteGear Chroma-Correct RGB-Daylite LED LiteRibbon into the glass and steel set, using aluminum profile and plastic diffusers provided by Kavanaugh’s art department. Cues were orchestrated from an ETC Ion Xe console operated by Kent Arneson; Laustsen took advantage of that control to increase the intensity of the light over time — until the very end of the fight, when the two combatants are photographed primarily in silhouette against the LED walls.

Wick literally fights his way through the set — alternately smashing his opponents and being smashed through glass pedestals, walls and floors — until he comes face to face with his nemesis. “We filmed this sequence with a [Chapman/Leonard Hustler IV] dolly and a Libra head, a Steadicam, and a couple of crane shots [with a MovieBird 45 and Aerocrane jib],” Laustsen details. “We didn’t want to go handheld because of all the straight lines. It would be a much more powerful look for the film if the frame was always parallel to the set.” “When we did bring in lights for the close-ups, we used Arri SkyPanel S60s and Astera AX1 LED tubes that we could attach virtually anywhere using magnets and clips,” Almeida adds. “The Astera tubes worked out great because they’re easy to hide, and if you saw a reflection, it just looked like the lighting that was built-in already.”

Karmen De'Chance was born in a predominately human, small town on the sword coast. She spent most of her childhood assisting in her parents shop. The town she was raised in worshiped the god of luck, Tymora. The citizens of this town believed that Tymora would pick a chosen every hundred or so years to bring honor to the village and make a name for itself. This chosen would supposably be discovered in an exhibit great holy power.

Karmen never really thought of leaving the village she was born into, she had her life pretty much planned out. She'd work for her parents in the shop until they were too old, and then she'd take over. She'd probably end up marrying one of the nice village boys she grew up with, maybe have a few kids, repeat the cycle and then die. But deep down she always felt like she could do something more.

But one day, late in the afternoon, while she was roaming the forest for ingredients, she found a small golden trinket amongst the grass, it had a soft heat to it, like it had been left in the sun, despite the canopy above creating shadows at all times of the day. She gathered the things she needed and headed back for the village, the sun was almost set as she got to it's wooden walls. But when she got there she noticed something was wrong, the gates were shut. As she drew closer to the walls she noticed a small hoard of undead trying to get into her village. In her panic, she froze. Unfortunately the undead had spotted a new, easier-to-get target, her. Before she could react the undead were already going in her direction and tried to run but they dragged her to the floor. She had almost expended all her energy fighting off the undead when the golden trinket in her hand began to heat up. It let out a wave of holy magic, dissolving the hoard around her into ash, and healing her wounds. The villagers saw this wave of holy energy and rushed outside to see what had happened. They saw Karmen stood up, with a pile of glowing ash around her. A murmur began to stir from the forming crowd before someone yelled out, "It's her, Karmen is Tymora's chosen!!". The next week was a blur and people rushed around her, taking her measurements, congratulating her, training her. At the end of the week she was stood at the entrance of her village with a brand new set of armor, a glaive, a backpack full of supplies, and a small sum of gold donated by the townsfolk to assist on her adventure. Her parents and the crowd behind her cheered as she slowly walked off into the distance.

They tend not to stay too long, as the city doesn’t really have the allure that other parts of Australia do. But Brisbane actually has plenty to see and do, and I think people should change it. Home to just over two million people, it’s a very outdoorsy place, with lots of parks and even an urban beach. There’s a high quality of life and a hip restaurant scene, and the largest koala sanctuary in the world is just outside of town. And, since it’s not too spread out, you're never really too far from anything. To help you plan your trip and figure out where to stay during your visit, here’s my list of the best neighborhoods in Brisbane: Where to Stay in Brisbane for Sightseeing: Inner City/CBD If you want to be in the center of it all, stay in the Inner City, known colloquially as the CBD (Central Business District). A ton of restaurants and cocktail lounges can be found in the area, along with some fantastic attractions like the Queensland Holocaust Museum, the City Botanic Gardens, and the Museum of Brisbane. The Brooklyn Standard is a speakeasy-style bar with a NYC theme, featuring excellent live music. Make sure not to miss it. There is also the large Queen Street Mall nearby if you want to go shopping. The main transit hub, from which all long-distance buses and trains depart, is located in the CBD, making it an ideal starting point for visitors planning trips elsewhere in Australia. Plus, it’s located between South Bank and Fortitude Valley, two other popular neighborhoods, so it’s easy to get to both from here. Best places to stay in Inner City/CBD: BUDGET: Selina Brisbane: Opposite the main train station, this chic hostel offers private rooms and dorms with warm, inviting colors and local artwork decorating. one of the priciest parts of town, there are not many truly affordable places to stay in this area. You’re better off either staying in the West End just to the south or across the river in Inner City. The closest hostel to the area is Somewhere to Stay Backpackers. MIDRANGE: Novotel Brisbane South Bank – This sleek hotel offers an outdoor swimming pool, a fitness center, and a restaurant serving a delicious breakfast buffet. The spacious rooms have a modern design, with lots of clean, white space and pops of color from the Brisbane-centric photography on the walls. All rooms have comfy beds, a seating area, flat-screen TVs, open-plan bathrooms, and electric kettles. LUXURY: Emporium Hotel South Bank This five-star hotel exudes contemporary elegance, with chic furnishings, plush fabrics, and curated art. It attracts a young crowd that comes for the plethora of clubs and bars in the area. If you’re looking for some nightlife that isn’t so wild, head to the formerly industrial Howard Smith Wharves along the river, which have been transformed into a pedestrian boardwalk brimming with some of the city’s best restaurants and bars. Craft beer fans shouldn’t miss Felon’s Brewing Co. If you’re into cocktails, head to Mr. Percival’s overwater bar for excellent drinks with even better views. The best places to stay in The Valley: BUDGET: Bunk Brisbane: This hostel attracts younger travelers, though it’s surprisingly not that social (there’s no bar, and there aren’t many common areas). It’s located in a renovated warehouse, meaning that there are high ceilings and large windows with lots of natural light flooding the entire place. There are both private rooms with en-suite bathrooms and dorms (including female-only ones). All rooms are quite spacious and furnished with wood furniture. The showers have great pressure, and there’s a guest kitchen and laundry facilities too. MIDRANGE: The Constance Fortitude Valley This funky boutique hotel is decorated with colorful street art and murals by artists from around the world. All rooms have a desk, a pod coffee machine, a walk-in shower, blackout curtains, and a minibar; some have spa baths and a private courtyard. There’s a rooftop bar, a café offering breakfast, a fitness center, and free access to a nearby pool and gym. It’s great value for your money. LUXURY: Crystalbrook Vincent Located on the edge of Fortitude Valley, this sleek five-star property almost feels like a resort. It features an infinity pool with magnificent views, two restaurants, and a fitness center. The spacious rooms are all uniquely designed, with curated artwork and bold accents (like emerald-green couches and brightly colored throw blankets). All rooms have comfy beds, walk-in rainfall showers, plush bathrobes, flat-screen TVs, desks, and blackout blinds, and most even have a couch. Where to Stay in Brisbane to Feel like a Local: West End Just south of South Bank, the trendy West End is teeming with great restaurants, independent stores, bookshops, craft cocktail bars, and breweries. It’s an especially popular area for brunch; you’ll find lots of Greek restaurants here too, thanks to the thriving Greek community in the area. The alleyways are adorned with beautiful murals, and on the weekends, several markets pop up, taking over the streets. This is the best place to stay to soak up local life, but it’s also not far from the attractions of South Bank and Inner City, meaning you can truly have the best of both worlds here.

The best places to stay in the West End: Budget: Somewhere to Stay Backpackers: This hostel offers both affordable private rooms and dorm beds. It almost feels like a resort, with an outdoor pool set in a leafy interior courtyard, a veranda with fantastic views over the city, yard games, hammocks to lounge in, and a massive, fully equipped kitchen. The rooms themselves are pretty basic, but this is the kind of place where it’s more about common spaces anyway. MIDRANGE: Atlas Apartments by CLLIX This condo hotel offers apartments with a clean, modern, minimalist design. All have floor-to-ceiling windows, fully equipped kitchens, a dining area, walk-in showers, and a balcony or terrace. The property has an outdoor pool, a fitness center, a steam room, a barbecue area, and laundry facilities as well. It’s a wonderful place to stay if you’re traveling as a group or family. Luxury: As more of a residential neighborhood, there aren’t any true luxury hotels here. If you’re looking for something high-end, head to the Emporium Hotel in nearby South Bank *** Brisbane is a fun city whose cultural diversity is reflected in its eclectic neighborhoods, each contributing to the city’s identity. When choosing where to stay in Brisbane, don’t fret too much, as it’s pretty small and easy to get around. You’re never too far from anything.
