I’m not sure exactly which one you mean! Do you mean the jewel weevil, Eurhinus magnificus? That’s the most rainbow-like one I can think of. They look like this:

I’m afraid I don’t know much about them! They’re found in Central America (and also now Florida) and their larvae feed on grape vines or other related plant species depending on where they’re found.

If that’s not the species you meant, then you’ll have to let me know which one!

Banded Tussock Moth

Halysidota tessellaris

The banded tussock moth is a part of the family Erebidae, the tiger moth family. It was first described in 1797 by James Edward Smith. This species is also called the pale tiger moth, banded tussock moth, and tessellated halisidota. The common name “banded tussock” moth comes from the clumps of longer hairs that protrude amid the shorter ones on the caterpillars, called “tussocks.” The scientific name “tessellaris” refers to a tessellated pattern, or a pattern made of small stones similar to the pattern on this moth’s forewings.

Description This species has light brown, tan, or cream wings and upper body. The abdomen is a yellow-orange. The forewings have a pattern of beige bands with thin black outlines while the hindwings are blank. On the back of the thorax are two orange stripes with a teal stripe on either side. Adult males and females are identical in color and pattern.

Wingspan: 3.81 - 5.08 cm (1.5 - 2 in)

The caterpillars are covered in long hair that ranges from yellow-orange to dark gray. At the head and bottom of the caterpillars are especially long clumps of white, black, or orange hairs.

Caterpillar length: 3.5 cm (≈1.38 in)

Diet and Habitat Larvae of this moth feed on some species of alder, ash, apple, beech, birch, blueberry, boxelder, chestnut, chokecherry, elm, grape, hackberry, hazel, hickory, oak, sycamore, walnut, and willow. They eat the leaf tissue between leaf veins.

This moth lives in North America and ranges from southern Canada to Texas and central Florida. They inhabit wooded areas with different types of deciduous trees. Adults may be seen by lights at night.

Mating In the north, this species is univoltine with one generation and year while in the south, it is multivoltine with two or more generations on the south. In Missouri, a two generation a year habitat, adult moths are seen from early May until the end of August. They presumably mate during this time. Eggs are laid in masses on the undersides of host plant leaves. Caterpillars overwinter in cocoons made from their own hair.

Predators This moth and its larvae are preyed on by birds, salamanders, toads, bats (Eptesicus fuscus), and 9 different parasitoid wasps (Braconidae).

Caterpillars of this moth are covered in long hairs that are thought to cause stinging and rashes like other similar species. The larvae behave as if they are chemically protected, but they have not been tested for alkaloids according to Wikipedia. Adults are confirmed to have and use alkaloids like other moths in the Erebidae family. They gain these toxins from their diet as caterpillars which makes them unpalatable to predators.

Fun Fact Although some moths in the subfamily Arctiinae are called “tussock moths,” there is a different subfamily (Lymantriinae) also in the Erebidae that are called the “true tussock moths.” Lymantriinae moths used to be in their own family but are now grouped together with other subfamilies under the family Erebidae.

Adult banded tussock moths are visually very similar to adult sycamore tussock moths (Halysidota harrisii). Scientists even need to dissect the two in order to tell the difference.

ID request:

This snail was found frozen to the lot of the plant nursery I work at on the day of our first deep freeze this year, about a week ago. I brought him home because we weren’t sure where he should go, and in any case being a plant nursery a lot of random critters tend to hitchhike in (we also recently rehomed a froglet that came in from Florida.) It’s doing very well, and is eating mainly Malabar spinach and fallen grape leaves from my greenhouse, and occasional bits of yam.

I live in Western Montana and we have a lot of native land snails that are endangered, but I’m not a pro and the .gov website is… not great for determining if this is any of those snails. If it’s native I intend to find an appropriate place to release it ASAP, but without knowing for sure I can’t do that. Nobody yet has offered up a better ID than Cornu aspersum (common garden snail) but the stripes seem too defined, and I am having trouble figuring out from resources where even that is native to! I have been researching for hours at this point, and I promise I’m not a bad researcher, I’m just not a trained biologist. If you have any opinions on this cutie, I would very much appreciate it.

Banded Tussock Moth (Halysidota tessellaris)

Distribution: North America; from southern Canada to Texas and central Florida.

Habitat: Usually found near deciduous forests throughout their range. Adults are occasionally found flying around artificial lights.

Diet: Larvae feed on many trees and shrubs such as alder, ash, blueberry, chestnut, elm, grape, hackberry, oak, hazel, walnut, willow, poplars and tulip trees; adults feed on the liquids of decaying plants.

Description: The banded tussock moth gets its name from the long bristles protruding from the body of its caterpillar, resembling a patch of tussock grass. These hairs are not harmless, though; these fine hairs are like tiny fiberglass fibres which can easily pierce the thin skin of mucous membranes, such as the inside of a predator's mouth. While this will rarely cause any bleeding cuts in humans, the irritation from these hairs may cause a short-lived rash, especially in children. Adults are equally capable of protecting themselves; the decaying plants they feast on are rich in alkaloid compounds, which they then integrate into their tissues. This makes them an unpleasant snack for would-be predators, which quickly learn to avoid eating both the banded tussock larvae and adults. Due to this physical and chemical protection, these moths are quite conspicuous and slow-moving, happy to rest out in the open knowing.

The Artipus floridanus, or the little leaf weevil! (Also called the little leaf notcher.)

They are one of the few weevils classified as a citrus root weevil, alongside the Diaprepes root weevil (Diaprepes abbreviatus), the blue-green citrus root weevil (Pachnaeus litus & Pachnaeus opalus), and the Fuller rose beetle (Asynonychus godmani). The males grow between 5 to 7 millimeters long on average. The females can grow as long as 14 millimeters.

The larvae are around 9.5 millimeters long. The males are smaller than the females, which is uncommon for beetles, but common for weevils and most other insects. They are the only species in the genus Artipus found in the continental U.S., but they're limited to Florida. They have longer and narrower elytra than other citrus weevil species. While most citrus weevils have small hairs behind their eyes, the little leaf notcher does not. They have purple splotches all throughout their body.

Diet.

They eat, somehow among other things, citruses, oranges, grapefruit, lime, peanut, avocado, mango, lima bean, Surinam cherry, and collards. They eat the leaves off of citrus trees (Which can cause leaf injury). The males don't eat as much as females, and cause far less damage. The larvae eat the roots of citrus trees, causing the trees to become predisposed to Phytophthora spp, which is a root rot pathogen, making the trees rot without any visible cause. This pathogen might also cause sudden death in trees.

Behavior.

The females lay around 1,220 eggs in their lifetime, and only lay them under dark or dim lighting conditions.

Similarly, they prefer to eat under darker lighting conditions. The adults will only emerge April through July, and then take a break for a few months, emerging once again in October through November.

Habitat.

They live in Florida and the Caribbean area, particularly the Bahamas, and the American Virgin islands.

Their host plants are the lantana, sea grape, bottlebrush, rose, hibiscus, Australian pine, azalea, and sea oats. The larvae build small chambers in their excrement where they pupate for 14 to 20 days. The adults will only emerge depending on the temperature and precipitation. They usually prefer hotter temperatures and low precipitation.

Oak hammock - soil has a bit more moisture compared to pine flat woods. Oak hammock fire resistent will burn every 5-10 years. Animals include birds, squirrels, rabbits, turkeys which all bring in bigger predators like bobcats and bears. Native grape vine grow in this ecosystem as well as avocado. Ecotone is where two ecosystems blend together.

Aquifers are full of ground water which we use everyday. Natural wetlands are used to filter water and preserve water quality.
