hard to believe that it isn't ai generated :( lol saw some ppl commenting how it looks ai generated. can't blame em
its gonna take years for even a trailer to come out but what are some things you're wishing to see in the movie? i hope the one guy from the concept art is her love interest, but most likely hes prob not. based on the little info we got on it, how do u think its gonna play out? any theories?
would be cool if they have a spin off series of her and her possible friend group's adventures in nyc
Yeah :(
I think it's possible he's a love interest but the romance won't be a big focus. Maybe he'll be a supportive friend who has some shippy moments with her.
When I imagine what the movie will be like, I think of animated Barbie movies, except on big screen. You got a talented young girl with magic powers, her sidekicks (musical notes and possibly animals), supportive girl friends and a guy who may or may not be a love interest, an evil lady that probably wants to steal her magic, the themes of being yourself and following your dreams and of course, songs. There are also modern fairytale vibes: I remember reading somewhere that the notes were based off the seven dwarfs, and the villainess reminds me of the evil queen/stepmother, except she's jealous not of Melody's beauty, but of her singing.
The villain lady, Rose Stellar, is probably the most interesting to me (also she's gorgeous). There is an image where Melody is singing at someone's grave, so what if one or both of her parents passed away? Imagine if it was her mother who gave her love of music, and after her death, maybe Melody abandons music for a while or the other way around - clings to music because it reminds her of her mom.
Tumblr media
Then, when Melody arrives to the city, Rose could step in as an evil "stepmother", promising to take the girl under her wing and help her reach more fame, while secretly planning to destroy her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I want her to have a big villain song. It could be her manipulating Melody (something like "Evil Like Me", except it's "Don't you want to be popular like me?") or her singing about her evil plans and her jealousy when she's alone (I keep thinking of "Little Girls" though in that case the antagonist is someone who wants to rise to fame, not someone who wants to maintain it).
Anyway, I think the movie could go something like this:
- Melody's childhood. We see her friends (Nina and Sunny), her family, how she discovered her love for music
- Jump to the present day, we see her deciding to go to the big city or her discovering the magical notes that serve as her guides
- In the city, she meets new people and builds up the courage to start performing in public (like at the park or at the square), attracting a lot of attention
- Rose notices her and gets jealous. Maybe she knows about the notes from the beginning or maybe, she finds out later. Either way, she wants Melody's magic and she wants to destroy her career before she gets more popular than her
- So she pretends to like Melody and says she wants to help her
- Notes try to make sure that Melody doesn't get caught up in all the fame and forget about her friends
- In the climax of the movie, Rose is close to achieving what she wants, and Melody finds out her true intentions and loses all hope. She thought her idol liked her, but actually, it was all fake, and maybe, without the notes, she feels like she's not good enough.
- Her friends reach out and tell her it's not true, and they have a touching song together (this is where I think "Sunny's letter" could come in)
- I can see something like the scene from "Belle" happening, where she starts out singing alone, and then more voices tune in, until it's the whole audience singing with her
- In the end, Rose is defeated, and Melody finds her own way to be a singer. Perhaps even helps kids like her to learn music
A spin-off series could be fun. Though Zag already has a concept for a series about a music school, Superstar, and I hope it wasn't abandoned completely because I love the designs of the charas.

" If anything you find here happens to excite you, so much so that you want it now, you can always ask for me to tidy it up faster so that you get it sooner. Of course, I work at my own pace so don't expect instantaneous results . "
" What if two or more people want anything on here faster, you ask? Well my mood and schedule will both play a role in who gets their desired writing faster . "
" Just remember, above all else, you're not getting complete stories, but instead a collage of ideas that form the image of what they could be. Part of the reason why I opened up this place was not only to have my works be seen, but inspire others with them . "

50+ Light Novels Celebration: An Overview Of The Shite I've Read Thus Far
I've read a few novels in the past few weeks. 53, to be precise, including the ones I picked up before I started really devouring them in July. With my 50th entry in My Daughter Left the Nest and Returned an S-Rank Adventurer, I figured I could make a list of everything thus far, grouped into a few general categories. This is that list! I might turn this into a full page on this blog at some point, but for now it's a post.
Let's dive in!
Recommendation Tier [12]
These are novels I'd actively recommend people read. This category is further split up into different sub-categories for the lols, but it's the only one like that. These are all pretty good! Probably the thing to note is that these are according to my tastes, which are pretty niche compared to the average LN enjoyer, I'd bet.
Recommendation Tier: Must-Read [1]
Goodbye Otherworld, See You Tomorrow
Recommendation Tier: Absolutely Batshit (/positive)
A Wild Last Boss Appeared!
Recommendation Tier: Fantasies About Being a Competent Adult Doing Honest, Meaningful Work (And Finding Romance)
Housekeeping Mage in Another World
Dahlia in Bloom: Crafting a Fresh Start with Magical Tools
The Saint's Magic Power is Omnipotent
Recommendation Tier: Competent Protagonists Facing Challenges and Adventures
My Daughter Left the Nest and Returned an S-Rank Adventurer
Accomplishments of the Duke's Daughter
Secrets of the Silent Witch
Recommendation Tier: Overpowered Teens From Another World Are Kind To Others and Make Family
Making Magic: The Sweet Life of a Witch Who Knows an Infinite MP Loophole
Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear
Recommendation Tier: Enemies To Lovers
The Apothecary Witch Turned Divorce Agent
The Disowned Queen’s Consulting Detective Agency
Pretty Good, But Not Like The Above (Or There's Some Asterisks) Tier [11]
I like to think I have category names that describe their contents. These novels were all pretty good or outstanding, but there's something about them that makes me hesitate to recommend them (i.e, rampant transphobia or a romance that fails to stick the landing the way I want, or some other hesitation). These are all just ordered alphabetically from now on, by the way. Too lazy to actually come up with a coherent quality ordering.
7th Time Loop: The Villainess Enjoys a Carefree Life Married to Her Worst Enemy?
A Lily Blooms in Another World
Banished From the Hero's Party, I Decided to Live a Quiet Life in the Countryside
Did I Seriously Just Get Reincarnated as My Gag Character!?
Hello, I Am a Witch and my Crush Wants Me to Make a Love Potion
ROLL OVER AND DIE: I Will Fight for an Ordinary Life with My Love and Cursed Sword!
Sexiled: My Sexist Party Leader Kicked Me Out, So I Teamed Up With a Mythical Sorceress!
She Professed Herself Pupil of the Wise Man
The Sorcerer's Receptionist
The Weakest Tamer Began a Journey to Pick Up Trash
The White Cat's Revenge as Plotted From the Dragon King's Lap
Anime Nonsense Tier [13]
These are alright. I didn't hate them, but they sure were books I read. Some of these are better than others -- Bofuri is a standout -- but I can't justify putting them in the same tier as ROLL OVER AND DIE so they go here. Honestly Bofuri's mainly here because the MMO world makes me mad every time I think about it.
A Royal Rebound: Forget My Ex-Fiancé, I'm Being Pampered by the Prince!
Bofuri: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense
Didn't I Say to Make My Abilities Average in the Next Life!?
The Dragon's Soulmate is a Mushroom Princess
The Drab Princess, the Black Cat, and the Satisfying Break-Up
Forget Being the Villainess, I Want to Be An Adventurer!
Hazure Skill: The Guild Member with a Worthless Skill Is Actually a Legendary Assassin
In the Land of Leadale
Loner Life in Another World
A Tale of the Secret Saint
The Emperor’s Lady-in-Waiting Is Wanted as a Bride
The Invisible Wallflower Marries an Upstart Aristocrat After Getting Dumped for Her Sister!
Villainess Level 99: I May Be the Hidden Boss but I'm Not the Demon Lord
This Shit Sucked Tier [12]
This shit sucked -- for one reason or another, I either didn't like it when I finished it, or I dropped it outright. I don't drop stuff easily, but some of this stuff just had me so fed up with everything that I can't muster the energy to go back to them.
As a Reincarnated Aristocrat, I'll Use My Appraisal Skill to Rise in the World
Cross-Dressing Villainess Cecilia Sylvie
Can Someone Please Explain What's Going On?!
The Eccentric Master and the Fake Lover
I Refuse to Be Your Enemy!
I Surrendered My Sword for a New Life as a Mage
I Shall Survive Using Potions
Prison Life is Easy for a Villainess
Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for my Retirement
Saint? No! I'm Just a Passing Beast Tamer
The Reincarnated Villainess Won't Seek Revenge
The Strongest Knight is Actually a Cross-Dressing Noblewoman!?
Oh Dear Lord, What The Fuck Tier [5]
This is the category for the novels worse than those in the This Shit Sucked tier. There's only 5, but each of these had some nonsense in it where I probably yelled in my GC and/or tweeted about it and/or wrote scathing reviews of it in my reviews post. I don't often drop a series in the middle of a book, but these are the exceptions.
The 100th Time's the Charm: She Was Executed 99 Times, so How Did She Unlock "Super Love" Mode?!
The Abandoned Heiress Gets Rich with Alchemy and Scores an Enemy General
The Alchemist who Survived Now Dreams of a Quiet City Life
The Do-Over Damsel Conquers the Dragon Emperor
The Werewolf Count and the Trickster Tailor

Reading+Watching+Listening Log 2024.07 - July
Previous: Reading (+Watching+Listening) Log 2024.06 - June
——————————————————————————
Reading languages: German, English, French, Japanese, not listing which was what. (There’s also been some feeble attempts at Chinese, but that was more on drama and music.)
Titles are as I’ve read them either first or most and thus remember it for that title mostly
Not going to bother putting in the original titles of translated reads unless there is something worthy of note to it
Cursive titles have been completed
If it says a volume number, it may mean it has been finished or is still in progress
Some notes’ content may be subject to repetition here and there, as I also copied some older notes from casual conversations over and didn’t go through any rounds of cutting things down.

JULY
Trying to return to reading stuff on the apps daily has failed rather miserably
and keeping up online serialized chapter releases continues to be a mess. For some I've by now given up, as I buy them anyway...
This month started with Tearmoon Empire and I was thinking surely this month was gonna become the Tearmoon-month, but then... distractions happened
By the end of the month, it consisted pretty much just of last minute JNC catchup readings... which actually have proven I can still read fairly fast, but organizing those readings is a mess beyond description.
The music section stays, because this month's list is just too short again.

Notes:
Tearmoon Empire v1-4 - I really thought at the beginning this month was just simply going to be a Teamoon month than then this whole post could just be summarized with a 'Sweet Moons!" – Btw, those moon expressions really are nice. I kinda want to adopt them, but then Mia is Mia and apparently all the other Moon families of Etoile aren't…. Much more brainy, either. How to be torn! Anyway. I kinda expected a cute girls doing cute stuff comedy, which is actually still is, but then it also starts surprisingly brutal with the execution and the whole depiction that Mia legit does have more than a few little and big traumas, but at the same time (maybe because she is a bit daft after all) still manages to get on her feet and try to get life in order pretty darn helluva well. That's some strength that kinda gets underestimated, maybe even most by the narrator who really can't leave a chance out to diss this character. (By v4 said narrator kinda starts to feel a bit mean spirited.) And maybe it's not even all her own quality - after all in part it's because she bluffed so much she now has no choice but to actually become more like her bluff. But v2 thematizes the idea of self betterment, forgiveness of flaws and mistakes so well, I felt like this was totally fluff, but tucked behind the most tsundere veil ever. This series is like the diagonally opposite of Livid Lady (which I'd like to call the anti-fluff), where no one gave the MC any sympathy for her efforts, which causes an escalation of demise and no mercy. Mia's self betterment however ultimately springs out of Ludwig honoring her will and effort to at least try and Anne's sympathy to give her at least a token of humanity until the very end, which then is the seed to cause snowballing not downwards, but upwards. That's just such a bright, positive note to capitalize on.
That being said, I was surprised how quickly the first arc wrapped up with just two volumes. It could have well held on more volumes before the guillotine danger vanished. And then v3 pulled a Sailor Moon Dark Moon arc. Except that this series' Chibi-Usa equivalent is a bit less obnoxious to start with. Somehow the arc seems a bit more weak in terms of its plot pull, but also it seems like a build up to some more stuff building up on it, and so I'm curious what twists it may walk to. I'll be pleasantly surprised if it managed to surpass volume 2.
Brunhild v3 - Its events take place some 100 years after v2 and still a long long ago before v1 (which so far definitely is still the least interesting volume of the series). But I am quite taken with multi-generational stories and how one life's course affects some others later on even when they are long past and gone. As such, v1 does get some more bonus points in retrospect, but the memory of it being a bit of a slog unfortunately remains. v3 was cool to have another strong female protagonist, but somehow lacked any bigger twist that v2 still had. Maybe that's because Krimhild really only gets some agency much later on.
Fushi no Kami v1: Good heavens, this volume is dragging on forever. 87% in. Unfortunately, right in the middle of a Maika part. I'm half considering skipping paragraphs. The world building around the overarching lore of the ancient civilization and their writings and books still remains interesting, but it's really at the back burner of the plot right now. And every single Maika part just. Argh, I'm really not interested in your cheese PoV...
I Parry Everything: What Do You Mean I’m the Strongest? I’m Not Even an Adventurer Yet! (Light Novel) v1-5 - This was a complete surprise. I expected some generic OP power fantasy thingy, but then it was all about misunderstandings, and they seemed to be on Tearmoon levels, while not being half as funny and hilarious, which I half thought was a bit disappointing. After another volume I figured, this series just works from differently and I had to look from a completely opposite angle: it isn't a comedy and satire on the forefront, but more action and badassery. But both have in common that every character suffers the Mia-bug equivalent of this series and there is an escalation ladder which prompts everyone to be coaxed into self-betterment. That's a nice thing.
And despite being rather OP the MC still isn't a Gary Sue and has to spend effort and isn't always saving the day on his own. Meanwhile, secondary female MC definitely got some real elegantly cool looking spotlight.
I mean, just look at this!
Tumblr media
Elegant badass female (secondary) MC spotted!
Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? v11-12 - I, uh, accidentally skipped v10 after only reading 30 pages of it. The most baffling thing is, it…. did not even really feel needed. Of course v10 appears to have changed a few things considerably, but they were so considerable, they were shown and explained in v11 again anyway. That being said. V11 felt like quite the complete slog as well. By the end, I was probably more skim reading than not…
The Disabled Tyrant's Beloved Pet Fish v1 - Oh my. I will say the situational comedy aspect of this is quite stellar. It does come up with the wildest absurd ideas (tho the biting the jewel bit is a bit facepalm.) That and the short chapter do prompt me to read on as it goes, but it feels a bit like the instant gratification feedback you get from, say, playing Tetris. So far I read until the half line of v1. While I can feel this slightly addictive feeling while reading, as soon as I put the book down, overall, I can't say I am very wowed. I think this stems most from the fact that the MC is kinda…. bland? That is to say, it's like he has personality, but no character. Despite everything being narrated from his PoV the reader has rather little insight to his background, his past, his weaknesses, strength, personal motivations, how clever or not he is, stances or even what his opinion of the characters of this world, which he knows from the novel he read, is. And that's… weird. Second MC is known as a to-be-tyrant to him, he knows his past, present and future, and you'd think that should have colored some sort of opinion and stance, but he appears to be strangely indifferent to him, aside of primary instincts and that his life kinda depends on him. But maybe that impression is still too preliminary? Will see.
Initial Impressions I've blabbered in German while reading after being prompt:
Pet Fish p118/ch11 durch: What have I just read….
Was treibt ihn eigentlich so als Figur, Charakter selbst an?
(Zwangsleerzeile, weil tumblr)
vTuber Legend: How I Went Viral after Forgetting to Turn Off My Stream v1 – … the premise is interesting. It felt like a walk out of the comfort zone to test this one out, and maybe it was too far out. In any case, I cannot console myself with how this just celebrates the booze a bit too much. And it's not even like she has the immunity and can drink the stuff like it's water.
((classified)) - Which is not quite the case over here for some characters. You can even play bingo games here for how often something alcoholic appears and they drink it like water or juice. Not much more to say yet than that the MC gives me more and more aroace vibes and there was even a scene that was almost made me grovel and flop down on the table facedown, because it hit a bit too close to home. But it's kinda nice to see how the MC is having people supportive to them and also in way it's feeling like being earned.
Domestic na Kanojo v14-16 - Collection of Immediate impressions as I have read them:
v14: (nothing of note after reading and zero in my memory right now anymore)
DomeKano v15: New character and kind of everything about her is grating on my nerves…
A bit later: finished the volume, Hina… how come you are so… kinda useless….
DomeKano v16: So much rabu rabu…
Reaching closer to the end: …….
That whole "female molester" arc is rather losing me
Doukyusei v1 - It. Uh. Now this one is very famed and acclaimed and everything and I have read some Asumiko Nakamura before and I also do not dislike her style. But this one, kind of. I went out, and it's just leaving any impression whatsoever in my memory? Which is weird, the covers by themselves are quite memorable somehow, but anything inside did not want to stick around whatsoever.
Isekai de Ane ni Namae wo Ubawaremashita ch19 - The cheese has very much clearly started. But it's very soft cheese. And darn pretty looking cheese.
Loop 7-kaime no Akuyaku Reijou wa, Moto Tekikoku de Jiyuu Kimama na Hanayome Seikatsu wo Mankitsusuru ch33 - Pouts, pouts POUTS--- And some other good faces:

Oh and also, volume 1 in German got out end of July!
Story of Yanxi Palace #1-8: Over all the dance choreographies I watched of the 浮光 song (I babbled over that last month) youtube decided to throw me a dance performance clip of The Legend of Haolan over. Which had Haolan be misnamed as Yinluo. Haolan and Yinluo share the same actress, but the latter is the MC from Yanxi Palace, and then youtube decided to bombard me with clips of this series. All over the place out of order, and I probably have watched half of the show this way already, so figured could just start actually watching the thing from the beginning. And Yinluo is just so darn great of a strong, witty, quick brained and clever character. The show, aside from being full of pretty props, a very interconnected cast and plot also knows how to be funny to offset some of all the drama, death and broken hearts. And from the clips it seems like it's also a good example of how a person can love two people simultaneous, even if in different ways. And most importantly, how that that love stuff is not controlling her life. Integrity and purpose far supersede it. And she has the wits and later the means and power to stand her ground over it. And moreover, she is not above using dirty and bloody methods, but she stands firm at being what she is and who she is, and what her values are, so her character remains very true to herself. That's something really hard to pull off in life. She is quite the awesome character~
Which really. Actually. Is the exactly same description you could just as as hang onto Maomao from The Apothecary Diaries. (Except that Maomao has her poison antics in addition and really gives some big aroace-moods as of LN v2 to me.)
看 (電視劇《延禧攻略》主題曲): The opening song of Story of Yanxi Palace. As the OP it's pretty much got no vocals beyond the reciting of that poem at the end, which I still wonder if it's some classic poetry or specifically of this show. The full version features some lyrics, and they are quite nice, too. The opening visuals additionally are quite great and being atmospheric. What is astonishing is, that it's actually a whole bunch of stills with only kinda simple effects - the sort you frequently see in say Manga MADs or MMVs. And despite the simplicity of effects that kinda even look a bit cheap, it works. Really well. The direction and composition of the stills of the sequence definitely is eye catching. (Unfortunately the ED doesn't work as great. It also has the stills and effects, but inside is also a clip of the series itself, which is normal movement and kinda breaks the atmosphere completely for me.)
Other songs from the show's OST. You could also call these tracks the Yingluo-goes-badass tracks. Especially 反擊 is the Badass Yingluo comes, let's all have smug faces as watchers-theme.
张渠 - 玉人- Another track from some dance video yt foisted on me and it was nice to have in the playlist for a few days.
Zhou Shen - 触不可及 - Oh darn, this Engrish. But probably that made it so memorable, too. The melody is nice and the lyrics have a nice contemplative and kinda optimic note. The track was apparently the Chinese track to a movie, of which I have watch the first movie from a free years back. And at the time (and still) think, it is a good movie, but I really, really did not like the characters and some of the messages. So, just for having some fun and learn some sunlight in your life it's ok to speed on the highways or do prank calls to hospitals faking an emergency? I just can't get behind that. And knowing it's the theme song to it kinda soured me eventually on it. :/
Zhou Shen - 铃芽之旅 - The Chinese Version of the Theme Song of Suzume no Tojimari. I still haven't watched the movie, but I do like the JP version already, but I prefer the Chinese Version a whole lot more. Maybe it's because the voice is a bit lower than Toka's which this would imply:
RADWIMPS - Suzume (Suzume No Tojimari) [Dante Levo and Kindred Remix] - I like this Version more than the original too and it's some remix that does some pitch manipulation that lowers the one from the original.
The rest was nicely repeatable and mainly served to balance and accompany the above in the playlist.

When villainesses take the lead
We are the generation that grew up watching shows such as Digimon, Inuyasha and The Vision of Escaflowne. There is something attractive about works that involve journeys to other worlds with fantastical settings and exciting adventures. Let’s say, you have your normal fantastical plot: a common person falls into another world. There, they may develop or discover the possession of magical powers, live lots of magical occurrences and even may end up finding love! Magic Knight Rayearth, SAO and Zero no Tsukaima come to my mind, among others.
What’s so interesting about this type of fictional works? We receive the chance to explore themes of our interest, fulfil personal fantasies and escape from our common lives (the real world is already complicated on its own). This article shows how Escapism has its value.
There is a very interesting paradigm going on on Asiatic media concerning travels to other worlds. In fact, according to TV Tropes, this type of fictional work is called Isekai in Japanese media and it’s treated as a genre of its own. And yet, nowadays I find a very interesting twist in this type of media, a twist that makes things very entertaining.
The names of the works I’m talking about sound cliché and melodramatic: ‘My Next Live as a Villainess’, ‘Death is the Only Ending for the Villainess’, ‘The Villainess Lives Twice’, ‘The Villainess reverses the hourglass’. Others are more indirect, such as ‘The Abandoned Empress’ and ‘Your Throne’. Most are told from the point of view of females who have a traditional antagonist role.
I’ve always enjoyed ironic consumption, and these titles worked as magnets to me. What I ended up finding was a refreshing surprise: common women who fell into fantastical worlds made from the plots of novels and games they consumed in their free time, or more traditional ‘villainesses’ who travelled back in time to fix what was wrong in their first lives. In the first case, we would see normal girls who found themselves inside the bodies of ‘villainous’ characters and desperately trying to avoid their bad endings by the use of their knowledge of the plots while commenting on clichés and traditional tropes. In the second case, we see female characters who more or less identify with their ‘villainous’ role and try to change their bad outcomes while learning about themselves and what drove them to make their bad choices.
What do these types of works have in common? They are genre deconstructions. According to TV Tropes, deconstructions happen when a fictional work takes its elements apart and shows how certain elements would work in real life, by contrasting them to ‘real situations’ or parodying them. Sarcastic main characters help, too.
There is a very interesting trend among Asian Media (mainly works made by Korean authors, but there are Japanese too) concerning the deconstruction of traditional stories directed to the female public.
Why is this expression of the isekai genre so interesting?
First, because most stories deal with settings of historical fantasy, where we can indulge ourselves with beautiful Period dresses, gorgeous mansions and attractive love interests. One can’t help but remember the works of Jane Austen or the Brontë Sisters.
Second, because the twists of these works feel refreshing. We consider other points of view. We see why villains become what they become. We get to learn new plot points. Deconstructions give an interesting dose of realism and pragmatism to stories. They are refreshing because they give new angles to an old genre and we can identify with the situations.
But let’s not forget: the focus of this essay is villainesses. We get to see the story from the point of view of female characters who don’t portray themselves as good people and some even feel content with their roles.
Raised in a world where women receive lots of double standards, being pressured from young ages to be proper and good and yet receiving worse punishments than guys for doing the same things like them as a result of unrealistic expectations, along with some unhealthy extremes of social justice culture, where we are oddly pressured to change ourselves and learn from our mistakes yet we are not allowed to fully grow from them, it isn’t hard to identify with villainesses. After all, it is unavoidable to find ourselves as the villains of someone else’s life events. We are not perfect people and we fuck up sometimes. Especially when we are young.
So, why are villainesses so interesting? Because they fuck up, too. These characters don’t try to be saintly good girls and they acknowledge their situations. There is an interesting dose of cynicism underlying these works, in some, it’s more open than in others, such as ‘Your Throne’. Some female leads are noble demons who try to not drag third parties into their schemes, like Medea Belial in the work I previously mentioned. Others define themselves as villainess yet behave as anti-heroines are their worst, such as Aria Roscente in ‘The Villaines Reverses the Hourglass’. And others are heroes who still place themselves in the roles of villains, like Catarina Claes in ‘My Next Life as a Villainess!’’.
What do these three have in common? The leads also have internalized in themselves some moral standards about good and evil.
I don’t think it is surprising to find these types of works during the current fourth wave of Feminism we are living in. Terms such as internalized misogyny, double standards and deconstruction are concepts I learned these past years thanks to social media. So, why do I believe these types of Isekai novels that focus on villainesses are so relevant? Because we see other females’ points of view, we understand their positions and sometimes get to see that the true villains are other characters. Most of the villainesses of these works are, in fact, women with terrible social reputations who behave as anti-heroines at their worst.
There is a reason why the social settings of these stories are during past times. The authors of these works are deconstructing tropes from both old and new media. They are giving voices to Other Characters and show them in a realistic light, they write about flawed women who try to survive in a world full of unrealistic expectations, and that is true for both past and actual times.
It isn't hard for me to recall works such as Northanger Abbey or Jane Eyre. There are reasons why Period novels are still relevant these days, but that it’s not the topic I want to address in this essay. Here is this interesting article that analyses the success of Jane Austen works, while this note from the Guardian does the same for the Brontë sisters. Of course, experts and critics would get annoyed at me for putting Jane Austen and the Brontë Sisters on the same page, but please, bear with me: I’m talking about fictional works that deal with abuse, machismo, dysfunctional families and difficult childhoods, subjects still relevant to today. So, what’s so interesting about recalling these themes? It’s the way some Asian authors knew how to retake these stories, added some fantastical elements and still deconstructed others, providing us with a refreshing result.
Most of the isekai works I mentioned above are told from the point of view of young girls who are isolated for their social positions, because they come from other worlds and know that their ‘new bodies’ are doomed to die and more.
Imagine being reincarnated as the pretty daughter of a noble family and yet... you find yourself hated and isolated from others, in a situation you cannot control. And you can be murdered in cold blood if you don’t make the right choices. These works make it very clear some situations are ugly and dangerous. They are not painted in a romantic light. And the main characters acknowledge it.
Naturally, there are aspects we could criticize of these works. For example, the main leads usually are white thin ladies in gorgeous period dresses, who despite their issues still benefit from privileged backgrounds. And few of these works address LGTBQ+ representation, as most of the endgames are attractive male leads.
But then, this is not about pitting people against each other. It’s about acknowledging a new paradigm in story-telling, one that subverts and parodies plots.
Change is brought over by small steps. And I think we are going on a good path.

Hiveswap Act 1 Thoughts...
I’ve given myself time for the hype to settle down and reaffirmed my logical expectations and then mulled things over a bit more. My basic thoughts are “That’s about what I expected when I heard the words -Homestuck Point & Click-” and “This would have been sweet as hell if it had been released a few years ago”. So the question becomes, did the delays really muck things up that badly or am I just a little bitter because of the long wait? I can only answer as a person who didn’t spend a cent on Hiveswap until yesterday when I say... Yeah it probably holds up
People who really splurged on the kickstarter back in the day will obviously have a different perception, good enough will cease to be good enough when you paid more than your fair share and were forced to stew on that purchase for five or so years... I won’t begrudge anyone their buyer’s remorse to be sure. That said I won’t oversell it either, this is about the bare-minimum amount of game we could have expected after all those years... But that could be salvaged depending on how long it takes to deliver on the rest of the story
Firstly, the technical stuff: I made the mistake of playing most of the game before they fixed most of the visual issues like the framing problems, but even that I can’t complain about. Considering they fixed it so quickly makes me believe it was just a genuine mistake. The art and animation were gorgeous, but if I had to complain about something it’s that the action often feels a bit cramped. When you have to walk two steps and then load a new screen... That’s not ideal, but ultimately not an uncommon problem in the point-and-click adventure genre where a lot of visual interest is necessary
The puzzles weren’t terribly esoteric either (Which is something unfortunately rare for this genre), which could be a good or a bad thing depending on your opinions on how fun tough puzzles are. Most often when I was struggling it was because some new gameplay feature wasn’t really properly introduced, because I hadn’t considered all the options available, or because... I just. hadn’t. clicked. on. everything.
That’s all fair, I wouldn’t have wanted the game to have held my hand more than it already did. I really wasn’t so keen on when Jude or Xefros handed you the solution to Joey’s current problem when it could have easily been logically deduced if I had been given a damn second to think...
I understand why people complain about the Snake portions, it’s sudden and requires you to do more than click on stuff at random... But I can’t bring myself to harp on that too much. It added some gameplay to this... uhh... game play
The characters are pretty good so far... Joey feels a bit like a retread of Jane with her skepticism and her (Ultimately more understandable) heteronormativity and Xefros feels a lot like Tavros all over again... But since that’s an interaction we didn’t really explore in Homestuck proper I can let it slide
I should probably stop beating around the bush and address the heteronormativity already. I can’t deny that Xefros’ blush at the end gave me a sinking feeling, but aside from that nothing really seemed like a setup for a romance between them. Joey saying she had a crush on a boy and Xefros saying “Me too” was a good way to bring that topic up. Combining those two things together does a good job at helping people new to Homestuck recognize that Alternians are commonly bisexual by showing our Troll everyman display attraction to both boys and girls
We can’t forget that Hiveswap was intended as a secondary jumping-on point for people with no prior HS experience... And the game does a pretty good job introducing alien concepts to the audience through Joey as our surrogate, as she is similarly clueless
It ultimately leads to the conclusion that the exposition-heavier dialogue portions were intended for newbies and the flavor text was intended for HS alumni. And since the latter is more gay than the former, that leads to the conclusion that this is all intentional het-baiting
Joey’s crush being on an age-appropriate then-current celebrity reeks of compulsory heterosexuality, especially because it seems like she has no patience for the actual men in her life. The fact that she gushes about female celebrities in her expository dialogue and her interest in Jonathan Taylor Thomas receives no foreshadowing seems to indicate the latter is fairly innocuous
She’s incredibly lonely, only has male friends, adores the women in her media, flusters easily at the female form, and only divulges romantic interest in an unattainable teen heartthrob... She’s a baby lesbian, Harold.
The fact that Xefros’ actual moirail is presented as a domineering tankie wannabe-revolutionary leads much more credence to the idea of Joey showing Xefros how true friendship (And true rebellion) works. The fact that she’s on an alien planet where her heteronormative ideas of “Can a boy and a girl ever just be friends?” will be challenged leads to further confidence in this
An aggressive and toxic “bromance” being sidelined in favor of healthy nonsexual boy-girl camaraderie is actually more radical than people are willing to admit
Admittedly I don’t think Xefros and Dammek’s characterization and bait-and-switch-moirallegiance were ultimately handled very well, but that’s something that can easily be fixed in future installments
I was worried that the only girl we have to ship Joey with would be the aggressive fascist villainess, but the fact that the ending promises an expanded cast (Including, potentially, a female revolutionary) alleviates those fears somewhat
There’s plenty of het stuff to potentially worry ourselves over (And the fact that Cohen is shaping up to be something of an edgelord content-creator...), but the fact that this seems to be same team behind the snapchat stuff gives me confidence. Were the snapd8s obligated to give us poly RoxyCallieJane? Heck no, but they did it anyway
Ultimately Hussie promised us a gay singularity and his successors have followed through on that promise to some degree already, ultimately until I see someone completely fail their queer revolutionary promises I’m going to trend towards optimism here. Homestuck’s ending made a name for itself by kicking people’s straight expectations to the curb and I see no reason for them to eschew that gay legacy now...
The fact that one of the most recent changes we can verify, the new posters including Hot Steppin, shows more gay promise and foreshadowing is probably the thing that gives me the most hope
So, actual game review time:
If you believe in something being damned by faint praise and are still on the fence about more HS content, save your money until future installments show more promise. If you’re still just as much a Homestuck as ever like me... Well you already bought it and nothing I say actually matters... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

D'Arty, Jian, and Jennepher
Alrighty you asked for it!
Full Name: D’Artagnan Samuel Caen
Gender and Sexuality: Cis-male, Gay
Pronouns: He/him/his
Ethnicity/Species: Human mage (white)
Birthplace and Birthdate: Alpha Province, Delu G on what equates to March 25 (is 24-25)
Guilty Pleasures: Rich, super decadent, chocolate cake. He does not have it often and when he does he relishes the whole thing
Phobias: Magic getting the best of him and swallowing him whole. The eventual heat-death of the universe. Being alone forever.
What They Would Be Famous For: Musical composition and fashion design
What They Would Get Arrested For: He is shocked and appalled that you believe he would ever be in a position to be arrested. Except that one time where he punched out a dude in a bar because the guy wouldn’t stop hitting on Melle after she rejected him. Punched him to lights out and then some. Had to sit in jail for a bit. But also he is SHOCKED you think he would ever be arrested for anything!
OC You Ship Them With: Rianu
OC Most Likely To Murder Them: Hmm...I would have said Jennepher initially, but she honestly would just kind of ignore him/hate him from afar. Murder is too personal for that one. Actually, I’m pretty sure Anita would be the most likely to murder D’Arty but they live in separate generations so...not a thing.
Favorite Movie/Book Genre: Sci-fi & Action/Adventure
Least Favorite Movie/Book Cliche: Sex on beaches. Do you KNOW how much sand there is??? It gets EVERYWHERE.
Talents and/or Powers: He’s a natural magic user (uncommon in society but it happens), very good at sewing and similar projects, has a natural eye for music - not ear, eye. It’s not synesthesia, he just knows what looks good on sheet music and puts it down. He can’t play for shit.
Why Someone Might Love Them: Because he’s a sweet baby who will rip your throat out if you hurt someone he loves. Also he’s clumsy as shit and needs to be protected.
Why Someone Might Hate Them: Prejudice against natural born magic users.
How They Change: Goes from shy and quiet to lovely and comfortable in his skin. Also he puts on like 50 necessary pounds. Poor baby.
Why You Love Them: He’s my sweet summer child and also like the third ever character I created for this universe.
Full Name: Jian Hung Asaria
Gender and Sexuality: Cis-Male, Pansexual/labels aren’t super important when you’re following your soulmate.
Pronouns: He/Him/His
Ethnicity/Species: 1/2 Harpy, 1/2 Vampire (it’s...it’s deeper than that but we’re going with the short answer for conciseness’s sake). (1/2 Kenyan, 1/2 Chinese)
Birthplace and Birthdate: City of Angels (continent of Delu, pre-rediscovery by the mainland). Sometime in Summer (He’s a couple thousand years old)
Guilty Pleasures: Entomology, Horticulture, Film Noir Detective stories
Phobias: Not a huge fan of horses. Or flying.
What They Would Be Famous For: Oldest known native born to Adara still living. But because that’s secret, being the CFO for a multi-million dollar company that has a hold on pretty much all industry in the modern world they live in.
What They Would Get Arrested For: The question is what hasn’t he been arrested for. Whether or not he actually did what he was arrested for is a completely separate matter, but every few hundred years people forget about your history with the law, and you get to start over with a clean slate.
OC You Ship Them With: Adrien
OC Most Likely To Murder Them: The head of the only competition to the business Jian runs with Billy.
Favorite Movie/Book Genre: Film Noir, Murder Mystery, Detective Stories
Least Favorite Movie/Book Cliche: The Butler Did It - it’s so overdone!
Talents and/or Powers: He’s an emotional energy vampire so he soaks up other people’s emotions and drains them. He has lots and lots of experience though so it’s to the point he not only manipulates his target into feeling the emotion he wants, but also he can take only enough to relieve a person of unwanted extra emotion.
Why Someone Might Love Them: Because he’s a brooding vampire who thinks too highly of himself and then remembers he’s actually just a derp who is super old and has too many knicknacks.
Why Someone Might Hate Them: because he’s a vampire who can emotionally manipulate people and also is VERY good at running Dietram Industries. He’s been doing it for 4 generations now.
How They Change: He doesn’t necessarily change in the story I’ve got, we just get to see him more open and honest and less of himself at work, which is good. He’s kind of a dick at the office - which sometimes people have to be. But he’s just a lovable goofball who has no idea how to date normally.
Why You Love Them: Because Adrien is the most self-insert of all of my OCs thus far, and thus Jian is my beau.
Full Name: Jennepher White (Jenn)
Gender and Sexuality: Cis-female (you literally picked 3 of the 5 who are actually cis I have no idea how you managed that), lesbian
Pronouns: She/her/hers
Ethnicity/Species: Human (non magical), white (i swear i have non cis non white characters i SWEAR)
Birthplace and Birthdate: District 8, Eela with equivalent birthdate of November 7th (26-27 years old)
Guilty Pleasures: Hot chocolate, cozy sweaters, and snuggling with Chelsea. BUT DON’T YOU DARE TELL ANYONE OR SHE’LL CUT YOU.
Phobias: Institutionalization, spiders
What They Would Be Famous For: Being the leader of the eco-warfare activist group, GRAZ.
What They Would Get Arrested For: Being the leader of the eco-warfare activist group, GRAZ.
OC You Ship Them With: Chelsea
OC Most Likely To Murder Them: herself.
Favorite Movie/Book Genre: Documentaries, Biographies
Least Favorite Movie/Book Cliche: Misrepresentation of facts in order to garner support/shock factor
Talents and/or Powers: She’s an evil genius. She’s brilliant and she uses her mind to make sure she and her organization can take down the industrial world using plant bombs, super-oxidizers (that are good for the environment, of course) and destructive but non-invasive insects to literally dismantle the corporate world.
Why Someone Might Love Them: She’s passionate?
Why Someone Might Hate Them: She’s a bit nuts. Not in a good way.
How They Change: She starts dating a cop, for one. That’s...that’s a big change I think. And she calms down a little. But only a little.
Why You Love Them: Honestly, she came from a few really dark pieces that involved a lot of murder and death and explosions I wrote during a bad time in my life. She’s evolved since then to be this slightly DC villainess type of person who is super anti-establishment, et al.

Reader’s Corner: Tribute to Star Wars, Rosen Blood Vol. 2, and Endo and Kobayashi Live!
Forget Being the Villainess, I Want to Be an Adventurer, Vol. 1
At age three, Serephione realizes she’s in one of those reincarnated-as-a-villainess isekai. Amid the stereotypical trappings of such tales (noblewoman engaged to prince, magic school, magically gifted commoner girl), Serephi’s character dies abandoned and rejected by all. Naturally, she wants to change her fate, but it won’t be easy, and this volume introduces some interesting wrinkles to the formula. First, Maribelle (the novel “heroine”) is also someone reincarnated who knows the original story, and she has some kind of plot-correcting power that sways people to follow the novel’s plot. Many of the people around Serephi who were named in the novel are susceptible to this power, and may turn against her and side with Maribelle. I’ve seen plenty of stories where the protagonist tries to change the game / anime / novel plot, but it’s unusual to find them opposed by another character who’s actively trying to enforce the original story. I also really liked how the novel noted the collateral damage caused when Serephi derails part of the plot. She encounters the girl who wound up engaged to the prince in her place, and realizes that by dodging the engagement, she’s inadvertently set up the poor girl for a lot of suffering. I really enjoyed this volume; the premise may be familiar, but it’s implemented well. If you like the reincarnated-as-a-villainess genre, check this one out. ~ jeskaiangel

Alice in Bishounen-Land, Vol. 2
While I deeply enjoyed volume one of Alice in Bishounen-Land, I couldn’t quite connect with the rushed feeling of story and some of the characters being “at odds” in comparison to the beginning of the series. Alice continues to try and leave the virtual reality she’s in by having her idol group win in all their performances. In between leveling up for those performances, a summer festival, and an unexpected surprise, there isn’t a quiet or dull moment. As it was previously, this story is quite quirky (if not even more so), but unlike before, I wasn’t pulled into it. I think the turning point for me is when one character out of nowhere used coarse language and what seemed to be a romantic development turned into getting the cold shoulder. Neither were what I expected, nor was the slightly less then hopeful ending for Alice’s friend. However, the series did end well overall. I still laughed at times and really enjoyed the characters, but I found myself bummed that things were wrapped up so quickly and didn’t “deliver” on the romantic aspect like I thought it would. I would still recommend the first volume, though, to those who like quirky stories and otome games! ~ Laura A. Grace
Alice in Bishounen-Land is published by TokyoPop.
Fly Me to the Moon, Vol. 8
Yet another lovely volume of this manga. On their hot spring getaway, Tsukasa’s adoptive grandma Tokiko shows up and relentlessly trolls her and Nasa. The couple navigates the complex issue of a husband and wife taking bath together. Post-vacation, Nasa installs an air conditioner, which in turns leads to the notorious trial of setting the temperature. We also meet another middle school acquaintance of Nasa, Oka Nakiri. The mechanically inclined Nakiri (herself a girl) learns much about “girls” (as if they are some unfamiliar species) through Nasa’s impressions of Tsukasa. And a random girl who doesn’t give her name asks Tsukasa to…pretend to be Kaname and give advice? The main couple is as adorable as usual, while the supporting characters provide a lot of hilarity. The story also brings up various cliché manga hot spring / bath scenarios and skewers them for how they don’t work in real life. I had a great time with this volume. ~ jeskaiangel
Fly Me to the Moon is published by VIZ Media.
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time – Legendary Edition
I was never one to really get invested in playing the Legend of Zelda games. However, I always loved the lore and world building these games provided. One of the few I played in full was Ocarina of Time. So, this seemed like a perfect manga to jump into for me. The Ocarina of Time manga adaptation, like much of the more recent Zelda adaptations, was created by the female manga duo Akira Himekawa. Their gorgeous art in this two volume series shines, featuring both child Link and adult Link in dynamic battle sequences and fantastic action, and advances the plot well. I’m sure there are those who would have quibbles about what got cut short and what did not, but overall I feel the manga does an excellent job of providing the entire plot of the game. My 12-year-old son also read through this with me and had nothing but praise for the art and pacing of the series. The “Legendary Edition” is a wonderful, single volume collection of the entire series. It features gorgeous, full color pages and the cover looks fantastic on the shelf. I enjoyed this so much that after finishing it, I ordered a copy of the Legendary Edition of the Majora’s Mask adaptation. I never finished the game, but with great manga adaptations such as these, there may be no need to. ~ MDMRN
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is published by Viz Media.
Rosen Blood, Vol. 2
When I read the end of the first volume of Rosen Blood, I was pretty nervous that Stella, the protagonist of the series, was going to be devoured when she proclaimed she would be these men’s food source. While that caused me to have reservations about the manga, I wanted to try the second volume in hopes that she would be okay and to see more “romance” between her and another character. I can say both of my hopes were met in this volume! (At least for the most part.) Volume two centers around Levi’s past, and I found the worldbuilding and concept of how we discover his past (and more about the crystals) fascinating. One thing that has most engaged me about this series is the art and the aforementioned worldbuilding, and I was very happy to see more of that. Granted, while I felt a little thrill at these, it came at Levi’s expense; while I found his backstory very compelling, it was also heartbreaking. He has been my favorite guy (and continues to be) and I truly hope he will have a happy ending. However, one of his “friends” (another gentleman in this mansion) is doing all he can to destroy Levi’s happiness and I absolutely hated it. He’s manipulative and I found it unacceptable how he used Stella as a tool and for his own physical pleasures no less. I say good riddance to him in future volumes! Otherwise I overall really enjoyed this sequel despite it continuing to take me outside of my comfort zone. ~ Laura A. Grace
Rosen Blood is published by VIZ Media.
Star Wars: Tribute to Star Wars
Forty-five illustrations grace the pages of this art book depicting characters and scenes from Star Wars as drawn by mangaka and light novel illustrators. The log of artists that contribute is impressive, and includes the mangaka for Noragami, In/Spectre, BLAME!, House of Five Leaves, Peach Girl, Genshiken, and Chihayafuru, among others. The pieces are as distinctive and contrasting as you’d expect, though there’s certainly an affinity to the original trilogy above the others, and toward Anakin, Darth Maul, Darth Vader, and, surprise surprise from kawaii Japan, the Ewoks. Some of the pieces are breathtaking, incredible works of art. Others, frankly, aren’t very good at all. But the up and down quality almost doesn’t matter (and a editorial mistakes, like a reference to Return of the Jedi as Episode IV rather than VI, can be forgiven), because what’s most surprising about the collection is that each illustration is accompanied by a short testimony of sorts by the artist(s), so many of which truly are Star Wars fans, and through their sometimes heartfelt, sometimes hilarious writings, paired with their works, I felt I went on my own nostalgic journey, shared with these artists from a galaxy county far, far away. Star Wars: Tribute to Star Wars may not share the quality of other recent art books we’ve reviewed, but it is their equal or better in conveying how a property can spark imagination, and change the entire course of a person’s life. ~ Twwk

Endo and Kobayashi Live! The Latest on the Tsundere Villainess Lieselotte, Disc 2
As much as I love some light novels that go on for dozens of volumes, it’s also really nice to read stories that wrap up a bit more quickly, and that’s exactly what this second volume does. The first introduces Endo and Kobayashi, ordinary high school students recording a Let’s Play of a dating sim staring the extremely sympathetic and tragic “villainess” Lieselotte. After discovering that characters within the game are able to hear their commentary and interpret it as the voices of gods, Endo and Kobayashi promptly start fighting for the happy ending Lieselotte deserves. And this volume, just as sweet as it’s predecessor, finishes the story. Charming and silly, this tale has the sort of setting and romantic comedy you’ve seen in other LNs inspired by dating sims. However, having humans in our world interacting with the fantasy world through a game and being perceived as deities makes a fun twist on the formula (it’s a good bit more lighthearted than The NPCs in This Village Sim Game Must Be Real!, which uses a similar plot device). The story featured some twists I didn’t see coming, partly because some of them are so silly. I might even say some parts were a bit “deus ex machina,” except that would be dumb considering actual gods are involved. By the end, I was quite satisfied with how things worked out. If you’re in the mood for a satisfying and sweet completed light novel consisting of a mere two volumes, please consider Endo and Kobayashi Live! I liked it. ~ jeskaiangel

Anonymous Noise, Vol. 2
I am so thankful for manga recommendations because while I felt a little unsure about starting Anonymous Noise, I am now officially all in with this manga after reading volume two! I feel it’s probably one of the most dramatic series I’ve read, and what I thought was a love triangle originally, really isn’t. That doesn’t mean there haven’t been lots of feelings all around though because this manga excels at doing just that! In between surprise opportunities for Nino, working on growing and becoming a better singer, and facing feelings of longing for a certain someone, there is not a moment where there isn’t something emotional happening. I’m not sure which was the most emotional (I think that last quarter might take the win), but I do know hearing Yuzu’s backstory was a lot sadder then I expected. On the flip side, Momo leaves me…angry? Upset? I think I’m supposed to be fond of his character, but it’s hard to really like him with how much Nino wants to see him and seeing her pain from not being able to. I have been surprised though in how much I like Miou. While her and Nino haven’t become BFFs, I do like how despite things that have taken place, Miou is “supporting” Nino. It was refreshing to see how their “friendship” is not what I anticipated it would be. Overall, this was a really really good volume and I’m very happy I decided to start this series! ~ Laura A. Grace

Manga the Week of 1/26/22
The last week of January brings us no manga whatsoever!… OK, I lie, there’s a lot.
ASH: You almost had me there!
SEAN: Airship, in print, has the 8th volume of Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear.
And in early digital we see Berserk of Gluttony 5 and She Professed Herself Pupil of the Wise Man 3.
Dark Horse has the 3rd volume of Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!.
ASH: Which reminds me that I still need to read the first two, but I suspect that it’s a series that I’ll enjoy.
SEAN: J-Novel Club has two debuts. The light novel debut is Forget Being the Villainess, I Want to Be an Adventurer! (Tensei Reijou wa Boukensha wo Kokorozasu). You can likely guess how this one goes.
ASH: I do find it fascinating to see how these trends evolve over time.
SEAN: The manga debut is Full Clearing Another World under a Goddess with Zero Believers (Shinja Zero no Megami-sama to Hajimeru Isekai Kouryaku), based on the light novel J-Novel Club also puts out. This runs in Comic Gardo.
We also see the 7th An Archdemon’s Dilemma manga, the 5th Black Summoner manga, By the Grace of the Gods 10, The Ideal Sponger Life 6, My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! 11, the 2nd Reborn to Master the Blade manga, the 6th Record of Wortenia War manga, and Sweet Reincarnation 6.
Kaiten Books has a digital 3rd volume of The Yakuza’s Guide to Babysitting.
Kodansha debuts in print a new boxset holding the first 7 volumes of The Quintessential Quintuplets. Go read the part of the manga that everyone loved because they were sure their girl would win.
ASH: Haha!
SEAN: Also debuting in print is The Seven Deadly Sins: Four Knights of the Apocalypse (Mokushiroku no Yonkishi), a prequel to The Seven Deadly Sins that runs in Weekly Shonen Magazine.
There’s also the 13th and final CITY, If I Could Reach You 6, the 12th and final Kiss Me at the Stroke of Midnight, Knight of the Ice 8, Saint Young Men omnibus 7, To Your Eternity 16, Wave, Listen to Me! 8, and Yuzu the Pet Vet 7, the last volume before the timeskip.
MICHELLE: I need to catch up on Knight of the Ice and Wave, Listen to Me!.
ANNA: Knight of the Ice is one of the rare series that I’m actually caught up on because it is just that good!
ASH: This is a good Kodansha week for me! In addition to those two series, I’m particularly interested in Saint Young Men and To Your Eternity.
SEAN: Digitally the debut is Zatsuki: Make Me a Star (Zatsuki ~Watashi o Sutaa Nishi Nasai~), a shoujo title from Palcy. Two teenage stars whose careers are going in opposite directions meet at high school.
MICHELLE: I’m at least moderately interested in this.
ANNA: Me too.
MELINDA: This sounds very enjoyable!
SEAN: Also digital: Back When You Called Us Devils 9, Even Given the Worthless “Appraiser” Class, I’m Actually the Strongest 3, Harem Marriage 13, I’m Standing on a Million Lives 12, The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule the World 3, ONIMAI: I’m Now Your Sister! 4, Saint Cecilia and Pastor Lawrence 8, Tesla Note 2, Those Not-So-Sweet Boys 5, and What I Love About You 8.
Seven Seas debuts The Girl I Want is So Handsome! (Ikemen Sugidesu Shiki-senpai!), a done-in-one omnibus from Comic Yuri Hime. Shiki falls for an older girl at her school. She’s so handsome, and so cool… and so oblivious!
ASH: Count me as curious.
MELINDA: Same.
SEAN: Also from Seven Seas: the 10th and final Gal Gohan, Happy Kanako’s Killer Life 3, Harukana Receive 9. Tamamo-chan’s a Fox! 4, Trapped in a Dating Sim: The World of Otome Games is Tough for Mobs 3, and Wonder Cat Kyuu-chan 4.
Square Enix has A Man and His Cat 5.
MICHELLE: Yay!
MELINDA: I, too, say “yay!”
SEAN: Tokyopop debuts Double, a manga from a magazine called Flat Heroes. Two friends are actors in the same theater troupe. One is asked to “double” the other, even as his career takes him in a new direction. Somehow this turns into a seinen thriller? Gonna be honest, this sounds fascinating.
MICHELLE: Hm.
ANNA: You still won’t trick me, Tokyopop!
ASH: Exactly so.
MELINDA: Ugh, the nerve of them releasing something that sounds interesting. I mean that with complete sincerity.
MICHELLE: Yeah, I’m certainly trepidatious. Speaking of hurts I shall never forgive, I have taken to requesting Silver Diamond on all of Seven Seas’ monthly license-request surveys. It’s BL and isekai-adjacent, so maybe? I figure it’s at least worth a shot!
SEAN: They’ve also got The Fox & Little Tanuki 4.
Viz has another massive One Piece box set that has Vol. 71-90 of the series.
Yen On has a 2nd volume of Spy Classroom.
Two debuts for Yen Press. The Abandoned Empress is a Korean webcomic that is one of those “spurned noble ends up going back in time to try to fix things” stories.
ASH: I like that Korean comics haven’t been forgotten by publishers these days!
MELINDA: Ah! Agreed!
SEAN: Spy Classroom is an adaptation of the light novel – see two lines up. It runs in my nemesis, Comic Alive.
Also from Yen Press: Breasts Are My Favorite Things in the World! 4, Cocoon Entwined 4, The Dark History of the Reincarnated Villainess 4, High School Prodigies Have It Easy Even in Another World! 11, I Cannot Reach You 3, I’m the Hero, but the Demon Lord’s Also Me 3, Kaiju Girl Caramelise 5, The Maid I Hired Recently Is Mysterious 2, My Youth Romantic Comedy Is Wrong As I Expected 17, Sword Art Online Alternative Gun Gale Online 4, The World’s Strongest Rearguard: Labyrinth Country’s Novice Seeker 4, and Yowamushi Pedal 19.
MICHELLE: I need to catch up on I Cannot Reach You and Cocoon Entwined and, most especially, Yowamushi Pedal! I reckon the Inter High has gotta be finished by now!
ANNA: One of these days I need to read Yowamushi Pedal. My kids read it though so I just need to figure out where it is in my house.
ASH: I’m slowly catching up, myself. Hime Hime!
SEAN: See what I mean? Barely any manga at all. What are you getting?

Manga the Week of 7/31/19
SEAN: Most of the rest of Yen is next week, though some got delayed to August. And lots of other publishers as well.
Dark Horse has the 3rd volume of Mob Psycho 100. Actually, that may have come out this week. Dark Horse release dates are ephemeral things.
MICHELLE: This is a pretty fun series.
ASH: I really like it so far!
SEAN: Ghost Ship gives us To-Love-Ru Darkness 11.
J-Novel Club only has one release next week, but its title is so long it counts as three. Seriously Seeking Sister! Ultimate Vampire Princess Just Wants Little Sister – Plenty of Service Will Be Provided! (Tonikaku Imouto ga Hoshii Saikyou no Kyuuketsuki wa Mujikaku Gohoushichuu) is a one-volume light novel about a vampire princess and her desire for a cute little sister. It sounds dire, but who knows?
MICHELLE: Dire, indeed.
ANNA: I feel confident about forgetting this exists.
SEAN: Kodansha, in print, has UQ Holder 17.
Kodansha, digitally, has much much more. First, we have a debut, The Slime Diaries. This is a comedy spinoff of the Reincarnated as a Slime series.
ASH: I did enjoy much of the original series more than expected.
SEAN: Also debuting in volume form (individual chapters have been released previously) is Farewell, My Dear Cramer. A sports manga that’s a sequel to Sayonara Football (which got no attention over here) and by the creator of Your Lie in April (which certainly did), I’ve heard good things about it. Girls’ soccer, in case you were wondering.
MICHELLE: I hadn’t realized the history of this series or its creator. I was just, all, “Ooh, sports manga.”
ANNA: Did someone say sports manga?
ASH: Indeed!
SEAN: And we have new volumes for Asahi-sempai’s Favorite (5), Back Street Girls (12 and final), Domestic Girlfriend (19), Drowning Love (13), Hotaru’s Way (10), Kakafukaka (8), and My Boy in Blue (11). Kakafukaka is hard to read but highly underrated.
MICHELLE: Hooray for more digital josei!
ANNA: One day I might catch up….one day…..
SEAN: Seven Seas makes up for barely having any releases at the start of the month. Debuting is the manga version of My Next Life as a Villainess! All Routes Lead to Doom!, based on the light novel. I love Katarina, and want to see her in any format. (Also, anime next year!)
We also see D-Frag! 13, Fairy Tale Battle Royale 3, Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash 10 (print version), Harukana Receive 4, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid 8, Mushoku Tensei’s light novel 2 (print) and 3 (digital), and the 4th Precarious Woman Executive Miss Black General.
Sol Press announced something that’s out this week, but I wasn’t able to get it into last week’s MtWo so here it is. Two manga titles. How to Treat a Lady Knight Right (Ima made Ichido mo Onna Atsukaisareta Koto ga nai Jokishi wo Onna Atsukai Suru) runs in Kodansha’s Suiyoubi no Sirius, and is about a knight who’s always been seen as a muscley sort getting treated as an attractive women. She spends the next 3+ volumes of the manga looking shy and blushing heavily, from what I can tell. This screams “not for me”.
ASH: I mean, I’m definitely a fan of knights who are women, but…
SEAN: They also have The Ride-On King, from the creator of Golosseum, which is about a Putin with the serial numbers filed off and his adventures being awesome. It’s for those who want more titles like Golosseum or those who think Russia is awesome.
Vertical has the novel version of Voices of a Distant Star, subtitled Words of Love/Across the Stars. I seem to recall this wasn’t as depressing as the creator’s other movies. Slightly.
JY, Yen’s young adult line, has the Little Witch Academia light novel. Enjoy Akko being Akko in prose form as well!
ASH: I somehow missed or completely forgot that Yen has a young adult line???
SEAN: They also have the 4th Zo Zo Zombie.
Yen On gives us three new debuts. Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki is for all those who want gaming but without the fantasy isekai aspect. Tomozaki is an awesome gamer, but fails at real life, which he describes as a horrible game. Then he meets a girl who’s not only as good a gamer as he is, but explains how to win at life too. Fans of My Youth Romantic Comedy Etc. should like this.
The Dirty Way to Destroy the Goddess’s Heroes is not as naughty as the title makes it sound. A demon King, who wants to live in peace but heroes keep attacking him, hires a Japanese boy to take care of them. This proves to be a mistake, as the boy goes a bit overboard.
ASH: That could be entertaining.
SEAN: Last Round Arthurs: Scum Arthur and Heretic Merlin has a very Magical Index feel, possibly as they share the same artist. Our hero is tired of his boring life, so teams up with a girl to become the next successor to King Arthur.
There’s also another Final Fantasy tie-in novel, Final Fantasy XIII-2: Fragments Before, as well as The Saga of Tanya the Evil 6 and Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online 4, which starts a new arc.
Print manga debuts. There’s The Alchemist Who Survived Now Dreams of a Quiet City Life (Ikinokori Renkinjutsushi wa Machi de Shizuka ni Kurashitai), whose light novel is out in September. It’s about a run-of-the-mill alchemist who ends up in stasis to save herself, and after coming out of it finds there aren’t any more alchemists in the world! How will she live her quiet, boring life? Sounds like it’s for fans of Killing Slimes for 300 Years. It runs in B’S LOG Gomic.
ASH: This could be interesting, too.
SEAN: Secretly I’ve Been Suffering About Being Sexless (Jitsu wa Watashi Sexless de Nayandemashita) is done in one, and ran in Comic Flapper. It’s about a married woman trying to figure out what to do when her libido is much larger than her husband’s.
ASH: I’ll admit, I’m curious to see how this premise is handled.
Manga Bookshelf’s Pick of the Week (OK, I’m just guessing, but pretty sure I’m right) is debuting next week as well. Skull-Faced Bookseller Honda-san (Gaikotsu Shotenin Honda-san) already has a cult classic anime, and this is the manga, which ran in Gene Pixiv. It’s about… well, the title says it all. This looks fantastic.
MICHELLE: Well, your guess is right on my end, at least. I’ve only seen a little of the anime, but it is charming and I’m really looking forward to reading this.
ANNA: Me too!
ASH: I am so, so looking forward to this series!!
SEAN: We also get first volumes of light novel adaptations with Torture Princess (an omnibus, done in one) and Woof Woof Story.
A lot of ongoing titles moved to August, but we do see Interspecies Reviewers 2 (bleah) and Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts 6 (yay!).
ASH: Shoujo fantasy for the win!
SEAN: Lots of new series next week. Perhaps you could ask a skull-faced bookseller what works for you?
