Captured! He has some bite wounds inside his ear and one of his feet is all swollen. Most likely from a bite as well, he growled a little when I tried to look at it so I’m just leaving it be for now.

I dropped him off at the clinic for the night. We’ll look at him first thing tomorrow and once he gets the all clear from Doc he can come stay with me until he finds a home. Also, turns out he came to the clinic back in 2021. Which is good because it means we know an actual age.

I so appreciate the medical schools that encourage doctors to respect nurses and trust their judgement because so many asshole doctors think that they are the nurse's boss, and they don't even want to be good bosses. They want to be "my way or the highway" patriarchs. Sorry bro we do it the hospital's way because they're the ones who pay us, fire us, and protect us from lawsuits. You don't get to do none of that shit, so you're de facto not the boss

Location certainly has to do with it, but that doesn't seem like a terribly unusual price to me. The vets around where I live are like $500-550 USD for neuter and $600 for spay. This is across I believe 3 vets in the area, all roughly the same price. For reference $1k CAD is roughly $734 USD and the price I'm quoting doesn't include exam and medication from what I recall, so the total would likely be much closer. But I can also drive like an hour away to a vet that charges around $130 USD for spay not including anesthesia and meds.

I'm guessing my location has a lot to do with the price! I'm in Toronto, and most cats here are owned pets.

Cat update for the cat’s left behind at my sister’s new house. I got some more info. One was left behind by the upstairs tenant when she moved out. He was on my sister’s porch this morning crying to be let in. I went over to try to find him today but he didn’t show his face for me. I left a carrier for my sister so if that happens again she can see if she can grab him and put him in the carrier. Otherwise I’m going by again this weekend to see if I can find him.

The super pregnant mama I saw over the weekend has unfortunately given birth. I regret not just grabbing her then but my sister was still moving her stuff in and I didn’t want to risk making her neighbors hate her by taking someone’s cat before they’d even brought all the boxes inside. I think I know where the kittens are but I can’t possibly get to them so I can’t take Mama for now without making them starve to death. My sister did talk to the neighbors though and Mama was left behind 5 years ago when someone moved. So no need to worry about enraging her neighbors when I eventually take Mama.

Also before you say “an outdoor cat is a free cat” I get it. I really do. But in this scenario my sister would be facing the repercussions and not me. I figured I’d give her a day or two to unpack before I started asking to come over and take cats. Unfortunately that was all it took for Mama to pop out babies

so far today we've had:

emergency puppy found by a good Samaritan in a box on the side of the road brought to us from a private vet clinic bc they couldn't pay. private clinic told us it'd be a likely euth

two spicy ass weird orange longhair kittens that are both extremely sweet, extremely food motivated, and extremely growly and screamy

emergency cat grabbed by a dog taken in by a "good" Samaritan that didn't want to pay for euthanasia and basically wanted the private practice clinic to deal with it while still looking like a good person for quote unquote caring. private practice then sent the cat to us bc they didn't want to waste their precious money they overcharge for on a stray that was dying. we spent over and hour working on bringing her out of shock, drying her off (it's pouring rain today), and getting her stable

aforementioned emergency puppy had a seizure in the middle of dealing with the emergency cat and very nearly died. still alive as of now but on thin ice

our building is flooding where the walls are removed because of mold

emergency cat from earlier was stabilizing and then crashed suddenly. she was given some euthanasia to help her along due to a faint sporadic heartbeat still left after she passed

our toilets are not connected to the floor because of previously mentioned renovations. we have to piss upstairs at the gunshop and deal with the creepy weird gunsmith that asked one of our techs out yesterday

also hello to the people who asked me about skyfire. you were all correct! (also extra kudos to @t4ckie-j4ckie who also guessed that skyfires little buddy D0C would make an appearance shfkfhdk) SORRY FOR THE LONG WAIT.

There are actually TWO people working at the clinic- Doc and Dia :]

Skyfire is the resident cybug at the veterinary clinic. Doc found him half frozen in the winter and nursed him back to health, and now he just lives there

Cosmos lives at Doc's house instead of the clinic, but they'll bring him in sometimes because otherwise he gets a little lonely :(

Dia has some cybugs as well! They started off with just one, but then things kept happening and now they have like, a whole scuttle of them.

They helped foster a couple of cybugs that were rescued, and ended up keeping both of them ^^" They then ended up with another after they uh... encountered a cybug traveling in their direction. Very swiftly. (Dia is still recovering.)

Also there's that one cybug in their garden that kinda hangs around their porch. He's an honorary member of their household, even though hes a stray

Doc is also a moderator on r/cybugs. He had to break up fights between Buster and Bob and became acquainted with them that way

Today, ProPublica reports on yet another big change that stands to solve a decades-long problem we first learned about back in 2016, closing a huge loophole that allowed states to divert federal antipoverty funds to governors’ pet projects, like promoting abstinence, holding “heathy marriage” classes that did nothing to prevent out-of-wedlock births, funding anti-abortion “clinics” to lie about abortion “risks,” sending middle-class kids to private colleges, and other schemes only tangentially related to helping poor kids. It’s the same loophole that Mississippi officials tried to drive a truck through to divert welfare funds to former sportsball man Brett Favre’s alma mater, for a volleyball palace. [ ]

The agency has proposed new rules — open for public comment until December 1 — aimed at nudging states to actually use TANF funds to give cash to needy parents, not fill budget holes or punish poor people.

One change will put an end to the scheme Utah used to substitute LDS church funds for welfare, by prohibiting states

from counting charitable giving by private organizations, such as churches and food banks, as “state” spending on welfare, a practice that has allowed legislatures to budget less for programs for low-income families while still claiming to meet federal minimums.

Another new rule will put the kibosh on using TANF to fund child protective services or foster care programs, which are not what TANF is supposed to be for, damn it.

And then there’s the simple matter of making sure that funds for needy families go to needy families, not to pet projects that have little to do with poverty:

The reforms would also redefine the term “needy” to refer only to families with incomes at or below 200% of the federal poverty line. Currently, some states spend TANF money on programs like college scholarships — or volleyball stadiums — that benefit more affluent people.

Whole family hanging out in the cat tower. We have a very slow afternoon at the clinic so Mama Lilly gets to get spayed. Her babies are fully weaned and she’s not interested in letting them nurse anymore.

We have a home lined up for Bacon already. We haven’t posted them anywhere yet since they’re not ready to go home but we’ve started mentioning them to some clients. I’m sure Pancake will be no trouble to rehome but I’m hoping we can find somewhere for Mama Lilly to go just as quickly.

Say, Jason gets caught by CPS and shuffled around foster care, without major incident, before emancipating himself at sixteen. He's mad at the world but he's not delusional enough to think he's going to change it, the best he can manage is harm reduction. He goes to community college and works himself to the bone becoming a nurse then eventually a doctor. He follows in Leslie's footsteps at the clinic.

Also I may just tag this an an AU at this point (Also to maybe not step on any toes >-<; -) because man… Love coming up with the weird ass setting these guys are in which will probably be explained when I get to Mr. Sun’s design. But the short of it is they all live in an isolated little suburban town with a pretty small population (everyone knows each other to some extent.) and that there are other populations of Sprunkis and stuff such as large cities and rural villages.

OWAKCX

29 He/Him

- Was an accountant traveling to another city.

- Fell off a cliff near the town and sustained head and spinal injuries whilst on the phone. Vineria found him and took him into the town’s clinic to keep him from dying.

- Listed in the town’s documents as “OWAKCX” due to him unfortunately having difficulty speaking post-accident when asked what his name is. His speech has improved significantly since but has issues with volume control and a tic of making a loud startling sounds.

- His actual name is Ozwalt but accepted at this point that everyone calls him OWAKC. “Sure is a name” he says.

- Does not want to go back to the city he lives in due to how long he assumes he’s been gone. Most likely presumed dead.

- Clunkr and Garnold had made him his wheelchair. Said wheelchair can go very fast much to OWAKCX’s inital terror when first using it. Now he’s quite good at speeding across places (it took a bit.).

- Is a bit high strung and easily startled at times. Has bit someone in a panic before and apologized right after.

- Can get a bit snarky and sarcastic, joked about Raddy’s ability to hammer nails (Hits them too hard and they bend,) and got clocked in the head with the hammer he was using. He knows a bit better not to snark Raddy anymore.

- Lives with Vineria in her greenhouse/normal house, He helps her file her taxes and documents for free… Its repayment for literally saving his life. Everyone else has to pay him if they want him to do that for them, Mostly to keep his workload low and so nobody else asks.

- Chronically grits and grinds his teeth and shakes like a cold chihuahua even when under a blanket.

- Had an alt rock phase in high school that is slowly coming back…Not fashion wise but he is blasting it straight into his ears as he works.

Vineria

27 She/them

- Moved to the town because she wanted to have her own greenhouse to grow a variety of plants. Including weed

- Has gotten in trouble in her previous residence for seed bombing golf courses and smoking in her apartment.

- Very chill and laid back.

- Likes to climb trees and go on nature walks.

- Has tasted moss out of curiosity while watching over brud, has gone on record going “mhm not bad!” but tries to give him more normally edible plants.

- Naturally bald, used to just wear a beanie before her wigs.

- Found her first plant wig in the woods near town. Has been raising the same kinds of plants for her other plant wigs though the first one is her favorite and most worn.

- Helps out occasionally at the town clinic after she brought OWAKCX in, Mostly because she wanted to make sure she could check up on him while he recovered.

- Actually calls OWAKCX “Oz” instead as she knows his actual name.

- Has given plants and saplings to people as housewarming gifts.

- Was once in foster care and a group home due to being abandoned, Had ran off when he had aged out of the system.

- Cannot feel pain, This had caused issues such as chewing his tongue to the point of it being a stub and scratching at himself without realizing he’s hurting himself. Has since been trying to be more careful and wears gloves and long sleeves over his hands to deter the picking and scratching.

- Can talk but not very clearly, Prefers to nod or shake his head or if really needed- To sign in sign language or write down what he wants to say. Also squeaks in excitement and whimpers when sad.

- Has terrible eyesight due to his eyes facing separate directions.

- Has a bucket over his sharp single horn to stop it from hurting other people and because he likes the bucket.

- Is a sort of permanent resident at the clinic due to his condition and tendency to get injured

- Hangs out with Simon the most out of the clinic staff. They’re besties.

- Likes earthy tastes which is why he eats moss sometimes.

- Gets mistaken for a child by newer residents.

- Loves to hug people and being hugged

Tunner

56 He/him

- The town’s sheriff who patrols around to help others, Likely gives new people tours. Did this as a hobby for a bit until he was officially given the role.

- Lives a bit farther in the outskirts, Likes his peace and quiet. This is also near Jevin and Sky’s caravan.

- Used to live in a desert town where he was a street performer who played the guitar and fended for himself until he could afford a gun and leave that place.

- Has an old horse named Cornbread who he rode into the town, she can be found grazing near his house.

- Very talkative, specifically loves telling stories about his adventures before he settled down though they tend to get long winded and embellished depending on whether or not he’s trying to make himself sound cooler/ Trying to impress someone. Jevin

- Has lost a tooth in a fight a long time ago and got a gold tooth to replace it. How he lost it in the fight changes every time he retells the story.
