Until I started writing them no single hero/character stood out to me in particular as my favourite, I liked several more than the others, but that was with about the same fervor and was frankly more than half the cast. The "skeletal" state of their characters (and the lore) is really what drew me to writing OW fic in the first place. The pieces we get are so incomplete, I want to stitch them together into the beautiful thing I know it could be.  So, I guess in a way, it's actually the sketchy, skeletal, ultimately incomplete nature of the characters that drew me in and made me love them.

I love this too! I think it’s one of my favorite parts of OVerwatch, is the way the world sort of becomes everyone’s when its in their hands. When I read someone’s OVerwatch fic, especially, it feels like a slice of them.

My tendency is to really 'latch on' to whomever the pov character in my current writing is, but I must admit that McCree, Sombra & Mercy insist on showing up often in my headspace. In Sombra's & McCree's cases, it's their hidden layers, the sense of there being so much going on under the surface or behind the scenes. For Mercy, it's the core of iron and anger I sense in her beneath the kindness. But until I started writing fic, I can't say I had a favourite.

Very much in Mercy do I see the idea of “You don’t do things because you believe the world will change. You do them to prove that the world cannot change you.” and I believe that she sticks to that with everything she has in her, that she will do the good and the right thing, and it doesn’t matter if the world continues on its way, because it will NOT BREAK HER. If all she can do is try to put out the flame of the world with the moisture from a kiss, well, she will, and fuck you for trying to tell her otherwise. 

I tried very briefly to get into Sombra but I kinda had to scrap a lot of my Talon ideas just out of a question of TIME TO DO THINGS. And so I never got into her enough to really crack her open and enjoy her, whereas I had a commissioner who was very interested in McCree and so I ended up writing myself into quite caring about him.

Because I have at last finished writing the second story in this series, Ghosts on Bitter Ground, and will start posting it on October 1, I thought I should repost the first story ahead of time, just to refresh people's memories. After all, it took a lot longer than I'd anticipated to finish fic #2, so it's been a couple of years. Oops.

The good news is that I already have four more stories finished and lined up to go up after Ghosts, and I'm working on fic #7, so hopefully there won't be such a large gap in new instalments again. *crosses fingers*

In any case, I hope everyone enjoys this first fic in Back to the Fold, where Soldier 76 has kind of a terrible day, and look forward to the second, in which I go back in the timeline by a year or so to when the very new Overwatch Recall has some financial difficulties that need solving and the person with the best idea happens to be Genji.

I mention my Overwatch fanfic series, Back to the Fold, frequently which is a lot of talking for a 'series' that as far as the internet is concerned consists of only one fic on AO3 that was posted two years ago, and a snippet from earlier this year.

Mostly, this has been because I'm writing the stories entirely out of order, and because I am really not the fastest writer by any interpretation of the term. However, early on in the North American pandemic shutdown I finally, after years of off and on poking at it, finished the first draft of the second story in the series. Over the last few months, I've gotten it transcribed into the computer (my first drafts are always written on paper because my brain is that way), and then over the past few weeks I've beaten edits and rewrites into it.

There are only ~2 drafts left, one of which I expect to be relatively swift. I'm so close. I'm in arm's reach.

I have the transcribed first drafts of the next five stories after this one done, and some of them are even already in second or third draft. Stories, I will be releasing stories, it's happening!

So, because I'm so thrilled with myself, I thought I'd share the cover I made for Back to the Fold fic #2. Consider it a teaser, perhaps.

Currently I'm expecting to start doing weekly chapter posts of this fic sometime in September or possibly October. Mmmm, the anticipation.
