After the Éothéod revolt against the Wainriders, the northern tribes seek to form strong alliances with their neighbors. Lord Frumgar tasks his son Fram to lead the delegation to Imladris. With him, he brings gold, fine horses, and two young thralls chosen by his father to be given to Lord Elrond himself. Elrond is conflicted to say the least. Regardless, an alliance must be struck. Prince Fram brings news of darkness spreading across Rhovanion which is already leaking up into Greenwood. Elrond fears it will soon reach Imladris. Once more, Elves and Men must put aside their differences and unite...or fall.

He hoped so. Sitting around, listening to all the restless, chattering thanes and weathering his father’s tempestuous moods was starting to make him feel insane. He hated how helpless and hopeless everything felt. He hated that the memories of brighter, sunnier years seemed so vague and far away. He hated watching the thralls waste and drop, one by one. How the mass graves got bigger and bigger with each passing year. How no one seemed to care, or realize that they had stomachs too, and when the thralls were gone, the common people would start to starve, and once the common people had starved, there really would be no one left to tend the fields — and then the thanes and lords would be left alone to wither in their vast, empty halls. They could not keep going on like this. Pride was worthless if you were dead.   They ate well that night. Fram slipped some hard cheese and two oatcakes into his napkin once no one was looking, and when supper was over he called his roach to his bedroom. The boy was visibly nervous, and Fram had to wince at that. He knew what this looked like. Even so, he just handed him the parcel and told him to eat. Fram had no control over how his father chose to feed the rest of their thralls, but at least he could control this.
