LONDON, July 13 (Reuters) - Barbora Krejcikova held off Italian crowd favourite Jasmine Paolini to win the Wimbledon singles title on Saturday, coming through 6-2 2-6 6-4 on a sunlit Centre Court.

The Czech doubles specialist had dominated the opening set with a near-perfect display but was then rocked by a dazzling Paolini fightback which sent the showpiece into a decider.

The momentum appeared to be with seventh seed Paolini, but a tight third set swung 31st seed Krejcikova's way when she broke serve at 3-3 courtesy of a double-fault.

Serving for the title at 5-4, Krejcikova just about held her nerve, wasting two match points and saving two break points before sealing victory at the third time of asking.

"I was just telling myself to be brave and if the game doesn't go my way it's still 5-5 and we continue," Krejcikova, who was watched by Czech-born nine-time singles champion Martina Navratilova, said when describing the nerve-shredding finale.

Before being presented with the trophy, the 28-year-old also paid tribute to her friend, mentor and fellow Brno native, 1998 Wimbledon champion Jana Novotna who died in 2017.

"Jana was the one that told me I have potential and that I should turn pro and before she passed away she told me to go and win a Grand Slam," said Krejcikova, who adds the Wimbledon title to her 2021 French Open triumph and also owns 10 Grand Slam doubles titles, including two at the All England Club.

While there were tears of joy for the Czech, it was heartache for the popular Paolini who lost the French Open final a few weeks ago and was bidding to become the first Italian to win a Wimbledon singles title.

"Today I am a little bit sad. I try to keep smiling because I have to remember today is still a good day, I made the final of Wimbledon," Paolini, whose joyful and bubbly personality has lit up the tournament, said.

Krejcikova was seeking to continue a tradition of Czech-born Wimbledon champions including Marketa Vondrousova who claimed the title last year and she began in dominant fashion.

Striking the ball with pace and accuracy she broke serve in the first game before holding for a 2-0 lead.

Paolini, who beat Donna Vekic in the longest ever Wimbledon women's semi-final to become the first Italian woman to reach the final, weathered some fierce ball-striking in her next service game to get herself on the scoreboard.

The Centre Court crowd came alive in the fourth game as Paolini showed unbelievable court coverage to stay in one point but to no avail as Krejcikova held for 3-1.

Chatting to herself between points, Paolini tried to fire herself up in the face of a Krejcikova onslaught but another dropped service game left her reeling and the Czech pouched the opener in 35 one-sided minutes.

Paolini disappeared off court, presumably for a deep breath, and returned with fire in her belly. Immediately the momentum shifted as she seized on the first Krejcikova dip to move into a 3-0 lead with some flowing winners.

Suddenly it was Krejcikova who looked tight with consecutive double faults adding more fuel to the Paolini fire but the Czech steadied down to avoid slipping 4-0 behind.

It was all Paolini though as she rode the cheers of the crowd to take the final to a decider.

She looked poised to join Francesca Schiavone (2010 French Open) and Flavia Pennetta (2015 U.S. Open) on the list of female Italian Grand Slam singles champions, but Krejcikova used all her experience to wrestle back control.

Krejcikova banged down five aces in the deciding set and when Paolini wavered at 3-3 it proved decisive.

NEW YORK — The Latest on the U.S. Open tennis tournament (all times local): 3:10 p.m.

Francesca Schiavone has retired from tennis after a career in which she won the French Open title and three Fed Cup championships with Italy.

Schiavone, 38, said she accomplished both her goals as a player, which were to win at Roland Garros and reach the top 10 in the world. She did both in the same year, with her 2010 French Open title helping propel her to No. 7 that year. She would peak at No. 4 — the highest ever for an Italian woman — in 2011.

She also played the longest Grand Slam match for a woman that year, overcoming six match points to beat Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-4, 1-6, 16-14 in 4 hours, 44 minutes in the fourth round of the Australian Open.

She is now coaching, and says her dream now is to bring a player to a Grand Slam tournament. ___ 2:30 p.m. The draw has been set for the 11th wheelchair tennis competition at the U.S. Open.

Twenty athletes will compete in men’s and women’s singles and doubles as well as the quad competition, which involves players who have lost some function in at least one of their arms.

Wheelchair tennis has been around for more than four decades with 120 professional events in 80 countries, but only recently become a mainstay all four Grand Slams.

It was first played at the U.S. Open in 2005, but did not have a match in Arthur Ashe Stadium until last year. It will have two more played at the main stadium this week.

American David Wagner, the top-ranked quad player in the world, is attempting to win his fourth U.S. Open quad singles title and his ninth in doubles.

The competition runs from Thursday through Sunday with a total purse of $200,000. ___ 1:15 p.m. Naomi Osaka dominated Lesia Tsurenko 6-1, 6-1 at the U.S. Open to reach her first Grand Slam semifinal.

The No. 20 seed broke Tsurenko in the second game of the match, despite being on the sun-drenched side of the court at Arthur Ashe Stadium and cruised from there. She needed just 26 minutes to win the first set and finished the match in just under an hour.

Tsurenko, who had 31 unforced errors, went up 40-15 in the first game of the second set, but was broken again. She also had three break points in the sixth game of the set, but could not capitalize against the 20-year old.

The 29-year-old Tsurenko, who had struggled with the heat during her three-set win Monday over Marketa Vondrousova, grabbed her legs several times during the match, but did not ask for any medical help.

On the women’s side, American Madison Keys, last year’s runner-up, looks to return to the semifinals for the second straight year against Carla Suarez Navarro. No. 20 seed Naomi Osaka of Japan and Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine are both looking for their first semifinal appearance when they meet in the day’s first quarterfinal in Arthur Ashe stadium.

In realtà io non sono una spettatrice straordinariamente esigente e non ho neanche un genere preferito; in linea generale guardo volentieri qualunque cosa non offenda la mia intelligenza e non abbia il finale già scritto coi lampeggianti dalla prima scena. Mi piacciono i personaggi non nettamente buoni o nettamente cattivi, perché sono quelli che ci assomigliano davvero, e mi piace che non parlino doppiaggese, ovvero che abbiano un accento realistico e individuabile. E la mia regola preferita in narrativa è show don’t tell, quindi non sopporto l’exposition e i grandi proclami. Il problema delle serie italiane è, di solito, non rispondere a nessuna di queste regole. xD 

Detto ciò sono una studentessa di Lingue col pallino della Storia, quindi per me lo show ideale sarebbe un period drama o un adattamento di romanzi, idealmente un adattamento di romanzi in costume storico ù-ù

Abbiamo un sacco di romanzi mai adattati, sia classici che contemporanei, un sacco di personaggi storici senza biopic o con biopic imbarazzanti. Se vogliono andare sul sicuro, Camilleri ha scritto un sacco di romanzi storici belli. È una bella gatta da pelare. Posso dire che in termini di biopic graditi ho avuto Virginia. La monaca di Monza e la prima stagione dei Medici non mi ha fatto schifo. Per quanto riguarda le comedy mi è piaciuto molto Amiche Mie qualche anno fa, era una storia tutto sommato convenzionale che però ha provato a svecchiare il format con un cast veramente solido. Fra i drammi/crime Non Uccidere e Rocco Schiavone sono >>> e se un teen drama non ha la varietà, il linguaggio e la fotografia di Skam non si disturbino a mandarlo in onda.

Venendo ai castttt io ho un debole per tutto il bacino di attori romani di mezza età attivi al momento (datemi qualcosa con Mastandrea e Giallini e sono vostra per sempre), ma anche qui non ho esigenze folli - basta che la smettano di fare tutto con Lino Guanciale e la Incontrada per quanto ami alla follia Lino Guanciale.
