To solve that case, she was partnered with savvy sergeant JD Dempsey (Todd Lasance) of the Australian Federal Police (similar to the FBI). “He loves banter, but he’s also a fierce operator,” says Lasance. (He and his costar spoke about the series earlier this year.)

They first got on like, well, two wrestling crocodiles. “You have the might of the American military and this proud, plucky, antiauthoritarian Australian facing off,” O’Neill says. Still, their successful joint investigation (which ended thrillingly with Mackey commandeering a chopper and swooping over Sydney Harbour to chase the perps) results in the formation of a new office: NCIS Sydney.

“With Sydney, we have a unique opportunity the other franchises didn’t — to see these guys on Day 1, establishing this team,” O’Neill says. “They end up being a good fit. JD works under Mackey, but in some ways runs the team while Mackey is freed to approach things in a maverick way. You’re going to see team building, bonding, and cracking — what people do when they’re forced to trust one another.”

Clues come via a new set of NCIS geniuses: anxious forensic scientist Bluebird “Blue” Gleeson (Mavournee Hazel), who, despite her brains, has impostor syndrome, and AFP forensic pathologist Roy Penrose (William McInnes), who’s given up on life for reasons that will be revealed. “Blue reanimates Doc Roy’s emotional beating heart. He pretends to be curmudgeonly. But when she walks into the room, his world lights a little bit,” O’Neill says.

Blue pulls evidence from the mysterious arm’s dive wrist computer that leads to the start of a longer story arc. “There might be something nefarious going on,” O’Neill says. “While NCIS is wrestling order from chaos, this other organization is trying to wrestle chaos from order. They’re working to undermine the security of the special relationship [between America and Australia], the stability of the region.” U.S. Department of Defense attaché Richard Rankin (Lewis Fitz-Gerald) is already prompting questions: “Is he a good guy, a bad guy, just hard to read?” O’Neill says.

Today’s theme: Indiana Jones (Film series)

Plot: The original 3 films are set between the two World Wars. A young professor and archaeologist sets out to find rare artifacts that have been missing for years. Often he sets out, seeking help from allies to find the artifacts before rival archaeologists and Nazis come across them. Decked in an iconic, weather-worn fedora, trusty bullwhip and pistol in hand, he manages to outwit the bad guys and save the day, all with a bit of luck and tough grit.

The first film Raiders of the Lost Ark centers on the archaeologist trying to locate the fabled Ark of the Covenant, before his Belgian rival and the Nazis locate it. He crosses paths with an old flame who was the daughter of his mentor and she aids him in quest, albeit a bit reluctantly.

The second film Indian Jones and the Temple of Doom was treated as a prequel to the first film, set in 1935 when the archaeologist and his young sidekick, along with a helpless showgirl, escape the Shanghai mob and find themselves in India. They agree to help the locals locate an ancient stone, one of the five Sankara Stones, which was stolen from their village, along with many of the children, who have gone missing. They eventually discover that a cult has located three of the stones and plans to use them for dark, ritualistic purposes.

The third film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was a sequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark, in which the archaeologist receives a distressing letter about his missing father, also an archaeologist, who was looking for the Holy Grail. He eventually finds his father has been kidnapped by the Nazis, who are seeking the Holy Grail for their ruler. Along with his allies, father, and a double agent, he locates the Holy Grail’s location, and under duress, is forced to retrieve it to save his father during a shoot-out.

Later, a fourth film titled Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull came out. Set in the late 1950s, the archaeologist races against the Soviets to locate a crystal skull with mysterious origins. He is aided by a young man, who is revealed to his son from a previous relationship with his old flame from the first film. 

Characters

Dr. Henry Walton “Indiana” Jones Jr.: The hero and main character of the film franchise. He is an archaeologist and teaches at an American university. Knowledgeable, quick on his feet, and brave, he tends to focus on getting the artifacts he’s hunting and to ensure they’re out of enemy hands. Skilled with a gun and a trusty bullwhip during his adventures. Despite his rough exterior, he has a caring side and is popular with the ladies. He has a fear of snakes. During his adventures, he encounters many female interests, one being Marion Ravenwood, the daughter of his late mentor. His main fear is snakes.

Marion Ravenwood: The daughter of Indy’s mentor who was in a relationship with him years ago prior to the start of the first film. He parted ways with his mentor, which hurt Marion deeply, who was madly in love with him. After her father moves to Nepal, she eventually grows up and owns a bar there, tending and challenging locals to drinking contests. Her father left her with the medallion that shows part of a map to the Ark of the Covenant, which she wears under her shirt. Years later, Indy approaches her for help with finding the Ark and she reluctantly accompanies him when thugs destroy her bar, seeking the medallion. She cares about Indy and it’s implied between the first and fourth films that they did rekindle their relationship and she gave birth to a son.

René Belloq: Indy’s rival who always follows him, steals the artifacts, and take credit for Indiana’s achievements. In the first film, he is hired by the Nazis to locate the Ark of the Covenant. He hopes to use it to talk to God. In the end, the power of the Ark kills him and the Nazis.

Marcus Brody: A curator and close friend of Indiana Jones. He is sharp and curious, often supporting Indy as a surrogate father figure.

Sallah: An Egyptian excavator who works with Indy whenever he needs help related to archaeological digs and finding rare artifacts. He has a large family and known for his hospitality to his friends. He has many connections in Egypt, often calling on them to help Indy look at objects, including the medallion leading to the Ark of the Covenant. He has a bright disposition and is always curious to see what adventures Indiana gets into.

Willie Scott: A showgirl that Indiana encounters in the prequel while trying to escape Shanghai. Originally from the US, she left for Shanghai when her Hollywood career failed to take off. She is used to living a pampered life and is quickly thrust into a dangerous adventure when she accompanies Indiana and his sidekick Short Round.

Henry Jones Sr.: Indiana’s father and a fellow respected archaeologist. When Indy was a boy, his father often neglected him, obsessed with finding the Holy Grail. Their relationship is estranged and the pair do not see each other, until Indiana is forced to look for his father when he goes missing.

Honestly, the way the narrative leaps from one plot point to another is astounding. Even when the story beats might not have always landed perfectly, especially tonally, I was still in awe at how RGG managed to weave a story themed around bullying and how it can affect victims.

After my playthrough of Lost Judgment, there was definitely a lot to unpack. Especially the dynamic between Yagami and Kuwana. And while Kuwana’s quest to kill bullies that had driven others to suicide was understandable. Especially for parents seeking closure after their child has taken their own life. I might not have liked how he forced his old students to abet in murder, but I could also understand it. After all, they went unpunished for pushing Mitsuru Kusumoto to the brink. Had it not been for them, perhaps he wouldn’t have jumped from the roof of the school. 

And yet, it’s a hard pill to swallow when these people now have their own lives and families to take care of. True, they might not be the most upstanding of citizens but they also don’t deserve to have the entirety of their lives ruined from a past action when they have since moved on and grown from that encounter.

There is much to love about the plot in Lost Judgment. Despite that, I definitely enjoyed the story of the first game a lot more. Perhaps because it was a lot more personal to all the characters involved. The personal stakes in Judgment just seemed so much higher. Yagami was tortured by what had happened.

In Lost Judgment, Yagami had already found himself. There was a surety to how he conducted his investigations and he wasn’t as overwhelmed by the trauma of the past. 

Lost Judgment also improves a lot from the previous title and peppers in the main plot with a lot of side activities. Although some might have derided the addition of the School Stories, I felt that they added to the collective narrative around Seiryo High. Plus, I got to play a dancing minigame. And who doesn’t love a dancing minigame? Don’t forget the boxing and robot battles and the motorcycle racing and skateboarding and everything else in-between.

The only thing that I felt was lacking in Lost Judgment was that, once again, there was no karaoke for Yagami. LET HIM SING, YOU COWARDS!

Combat, too, also saw some improvements along with the addition of snake style. Yagami was fast and quick on his feet. While some of the quick-time events during boss battles weren’t explained as coherently as I would have liked, they were still mostly fun rather than frustrating.

As for the Kaito Files DLC, I loved the fact that it managed to pack in such a plot-heavy narrative within just a few short hours. While there’s much to love about the Yakuza and Judgment games, there’s also plenty of needless filler where there are cutscenes that repeat information that was already learned through various other forms of gameplay.

Yes, characters need to talk and they need to remain in-character as they deliver exposition to other characters but there was something charming about Kaito reuniting with the woman he was in love with more than a decade ago. Oh and the conspiracy by her late husband to kill his old friends in order to maintain his pristine reputation. I have truly never seen anyone as slimy as Kyoya Sadamoto. 

In any case, Mikiko and Jun better not disappear to America in the next Judgment instalment. I want to see them interact with Yagami! Especially after one of the main characters has actually found love.

As for the combat in the DLC, Kaito’s fighting style definitely brought back memories of fighting as Kiryu. His tank style was reminiscent of beast. Hurling around mopeds and motorcycles will never not be amusing.

Lost Judgment was definitely a game that had a lot to do. It might not have been crammed with as much side activities as Yakuza 5, but it still managed to provide me with fun distractions that I found enjoyable to invest my time in. I suppose my one gripe would be the romance options. Stop trying to tease us with a Mafuyu and Yagami ship (actually, I’m still angry that Mafuyu appeared so little in this title), and trying to feed us with other romance options that don’t seem to care that Yagami has three other girlfriends. And why are they also so young? The only one that seemed age appropriate was the school nurse: Kyoko Hakase. 

On a side note, loved the Solid Snake reference. Cardboard boxes all the time, every time.
