I’ve been writing up some stuff for a potential Secret World Legends game since the Kickstarter I had backed last year for the TTRPG version of it released its raw text book, and because it’s all I can think about, I drew art of the 3 handlers potential players could interact with lol

Simon, Illuminati/Blue faction handler, my olde OC when i still played the MMO, and his pet bug dog Rubi. A lazy kinda guy but when the going gets tough, he sticks around to see what happens!

Fran, Templar/red handler, has been around for A While, a Very Long While. They know what's up and can probably deal with it, but their fuse is so smol and punching is so much easier to solve things

and Hannah, Dragon/Green handler, she is the worst thing you can inflict on a brand new agent of the Secret world; a teenager with a superiority complex.

You know something's a problem when the Illuminati, Templars, and Dragon work together to deal with it. And yet, this unlikely scenario is exactly what's happening as Tristan d'Eagan (Illuminati), Alexandra Bishop (Templar), and Carlos Hernandez (Dragon) find themselves driving down a dark desert highway and pulling up to an infamous hotel...

Daunting as the prospect of dealing with the spectral glue trap that is the Hotel California is, however, Carlos packed a secret weapon.

Shadows Boxing

Despite being part of a shadow, those Filth tendrils are also a deeper black, and have a bizarrely solid, textured quality to them.]

So a bit ago in the SWL discord, we were discussing the museum upgrade item, Dr. Klein's Notes. (A number of us agreed: we would very much like to be able to read them.) From our collective silliness, Vomher (or "Vh'mhyrr," as their display name appears in that discord group) suggested the notes were Klein's shadow, trapped and put to paper. Then Mojo replied to that with:

And I found that to be a DELIGHTFUL mental image. (For context: Mihas is a fighter, and mentions boxing with shadows. Klein is a scientist who has definitely not lost any intellect to the eldritch substance he's studying and microdosing, insisting he can still turn his head quick enough to spot his shadow before it sneaks up on him. Mihas fights monsters so he should probably actually be attacking Klein because the good doctor is definitely Filth infected, but it's fine, this is for funsies.)

SO, as is my wont when folks say fun things, I doodled it! And boy howdy do I love the watercolor physics in Rebelle, it is SUCH a boon for dressing up (relatively) simple doodles. I used it for the fire, shadows, and filling in the fellas. Used wet layers for the latter two, so the pigment would just flow together and I wouldn't have to think too hard about shading (using the lineart/selections to keep the pigment contained). Then an oil brush for the Filth, so the impasto 3d effect would give an uncanny texture, on top of it being (hex code) "absolute zero" maximum entropy black. I've taken to using the default oil palette's "bone black" for lineart and such, which is a brown-tinted near-black. So when I use pure-zero digital-black, it stands out even if things are otherwise (mostly) monochrome! It's fabulous.

The Secret World

It really baffles me that this game isn’t on many people’s radars. The unique feeling of magic realism mixing in with sci-fi it gives literally has no match. Funcom has always been PERFECT with this kind of stuff ever since The Longest Journey and what they’ve done with this MMO is incredible.

My god, EVERY major quest has a cutscene, every single landscape is a damn masterpiece and the world is drowning in small details. Yeah, it is an MMORPG, it has interface, standard MMO quests, but it oozes with character. Oh, and references. Stephen King, Lovecraft, etc. GALORE. And the music! The atmosphere in this game is incredible!

Quick thoughts about the TSW/SWL TTRPG

So we just received a text only pdf of the Secret World TTRPG. 456 pages long, no formatting, no layout

After a quick read/glance through, here are my thoughts :

The game is set in our time, a decade after 2012 where the events of the game occured. Some, especially in Kingsmouth, don't have memory of this decade, weird. It also means some of the game story happened while others are a mystery.

The NPC have aged. This means I can't legally adopt Carter anymore.

Reading through a text only with no layout is rough

We have some more locations, not a lot but some news like Paris. (And I am still infuriated that I can't see the "Paris of the Alchemists" themed visit because i chose the wrong time to vacation there)

Character creation : Well this is indeed a 5th edition game, and you will need the books for the spell effects

The class are named based on decks from the mmo

Only One class, no multiclassing. BUT, secret archetypes that everyone can have regardless of the class, you can have as many as your proficiency, will give you the liberty to better fine tune your character ( I miss the Wheel)

A summary of 5th rules adapted to a modern world, Good.

GM section: I can't say a lot on this. Having advices on themes is appreciated.

The missions are not all destroy creatures, on the contrary the differents types of missions from the mmos are there. Will they work with dnd rules ? we'll have to see.

Adventure seeds ? Good. No fully written adventure ? Not good ( there is a 8 pages one for backers but not in this pdf, not there yet)

There's not enough juicy secrets from the original lore that I wished for when backing this game.
