16.01 & 16.02 spoilery thoughts
Mac and Dennis could’ve gotten together at the end of season 15 and the episodes would be the exact same because they’re acting like SUCH a couple
THEY SHARED A BED AND NEVER MADE A THING OF IT BECAUSE IT’S BECOME NORMAL FOR THEM AGAIN????
Mac is acting like a man in a relationship alright but only if Dennis is said boyfriend
Charlie gluing a pillow to the wall was such a weird sweet little polite thing I love how his idea of hosting is this and sharing his cat food
Frank WILLINGLY believed he was being put down like a dog and was all for it OH MY GOSH
these episodes are so so funny but also incredibly sad and I love how Sunny always does this balance so well. Charlie being afraid to sleep alone in the dark. Mac being afraid to talk when Mrs. Mac’s finger is up. THE LETTERS GETTING FLUSHED
Dennis and Dee pairing up to trick Frank oh I love the trash twins so much
just perfect perfect PERFECT and I wish we had more than 8 episodes but I cannot wait for the rest of the season I love our weird little show so much

So I think most of Mac's issue with his uncle is that it's like looking in the mirror, and Mac doesn't do self-reflection well. Donald reminds him that his dad rejected him permanently, same as his grandpa did to Donald. That he might spend the rest of his life pining after a connection that doesn't really exist.
Also, Mac thinks they're having this conversation in front of Mrs. Mac. She hasn't outright disowned him, but she's eternally resentful of Mac for existing. She literally burned him with a cigarette at most a few hours before. While Mac would never admit it, he's afraid of her sometimes. Not exactly a situation that encourages open discussion about being subjected to familial homophobia.

i like how we have back-to-back episodes showcasing straightman charlie because we honestly don’t get enough of it and him in all sincerity being like “this is all you’ve ever wanted” is so fucking funny

Still can’t get over Mac’s facial expressions when Dennis says he has a system for attracting men, he goes from excited to doing mental math in his head to almost dawning realization when he asks why, it’s like he’s rewriting what he thought he knew about Dennis but in the end he still has to stay in denial about what it all means, same with the Uncle Donald situation, because it’s easier to accept the opportunity was never there to begin with than to suddenly realize you’ve been missing out on it the entire (goddamn) time.

Just rewatched Frank Shoots Every Member of the Gang and I thought I had probably wrongly assumed Mac meant WW2 when he said “the war”, and maybe he meant Vietnam or something, but he does actually say “world war two” earlier in the episode and like... There’s no way Luther was old enough to be receiving letters during WW2.
Gregory Scott Cumins is 67 (born 1956), so even if we assume Luther was born in 1944 and the letters were written to a baby, that would make him 12 years older than his actor, and he doesn’t look anywhere close to 79. Taking Donald into account, who was old enough to be noticeably “different”, it’s just kind of baffling.

frank shoots every member of the gang
again, exaggeration/flanderization seems to be a theme they’re unpacking/critiquing themselves on - “get ready for a whole lot of subtlety” being the ironic mission statement of this season that I keep coming back to because it reminds us that sunny can be over-the-top and subtle simultaneously. what a weird fucking show tbh
frank has always been the most cartoonish member of the gang and in that way he’s a representation of the absurdity and unreality of sunny as a show. in this episode his constant, absurd use of the gun as well as his animalistic qualities being so exaggerated are, I think, both commenting on the road sunny has chosen to walk with regard to the ridiculous behaviors each character has as well as how dialed-up they’ve all become over such a long run.
and speaking of a long run - first frank says that he has no intention of dying any time soon, and by the end of the episode he says maybe he’s hung on a little too long. then of course back to the status quo by the end. more on this in a bit
“it’s not like anyone’s in any real danger” - they’re not because it’s a silly show, but within the reality of the show they absolutely are in constant emotional and physical danger and that’s pretty fucked up
IT”S ABOUT THE LEGACY
mrs. mac is just ashing on her shirt
charlie having to be responsible :( that’s why he’s so good at getting shit done :(
“I didn’t even remember you had sisters” exactly
so far going to the hospital has been suggested in both episodes
I love when dennis and dee work together <3
dennis saying “get after it”  😎
I love uncle donald he is everything and I hate mac he’s so obnoxious
charlie seems so much more grounded and wise after his revelation last season, like in both eps so far he’s been calling other people out on their bullshit and trying to prevent them from doing further harm to themselves. I’m very curious to see whether this dynamic continues for him throughout the rest of the season because charlie has always taken well to the unexpected genius role and his emotional intelligence could be part of that more now
the beach of it all… (dennis takes a mental health day)
the twist when frank says “just do it when I’m looking out at the ocean” is such a good bait-and-switch, such good writing
we obviously get a deeper understanding of what awful parents bonnie and mrs. mac are in this episode, but we do for frank as well. because he’s an entertaining member of the gang his antics are often taken at face value but he really is a terrible father, constantly manipulating dennis and dee and turning them against each other. they get along great in this episode until frank yells at and intimidates them at the end, and then they start fighting with each other :(
circling back to having a long run/holding on too long (and this is the main meta of the episode) - frank would rather die than give up his gun. this could be saying something about whether sunny has had to/is choosing to give up certain aspects of its sensibilities and whether that’s worse than just being over? like if rcg were drawing out the show just because it was still profitable or whatever but watering it down/censoring themselves in order to stay on the air, that would be a worse fate than if it was totally off the rails (and therefore probably canceled [=dead]). I know a lot of people have felt that the show has lost its edge or whatever over the last few seasons and hasn’t really been the same show they know and love. well truthfully it isn’t the same show, but would you rather have a changed sunny than no sunny? I’m sure there are people on both sides and it seems like this thread in the plot is exploring that.
“this is soooo distasteful” exactly
charlie may not be a fag but bonnie is literally a slut
charlie and bonnie both pulling their teeth out on purpose - I like that we’re seeing some parallels between them even as charlie is more conscious of the ways his parents failed him
“I feel like you should be part of my legacy” <3
charlie says “I’m talking about our legacy, you know? I can’t hold onto it, man.” case in point!!! will sunny hold onto what it’s always been or will it evolve? dennis then says “our legacy is spending our lives in this goddamn bar with a lunatic man who acts like a dog and handles his gun like a maniac!” it sure is buddy. it’s like that post saying how rcg have written dennis into a corner and they have to fix him to go anywhere new with the character. tbh I think that’s happened with the whole show and they’re really asking themselves (and us as the audience) whether that’s something to be celebrated or something to try and fix. clearly I think the right answer is a bit of both - preserve the absurdity and edginiess of sunny, but save your characters from themselves enough to give them (and you as creators) a chance at having a more meaningful place in television history.
