Fraser's Dolphin: In 1895, Charles E. Hose found a skull on a beach in Sarawak, Borneo. He donated it to the British Museum. The skull remained unstudied until 1956 when Francis Fraser examined it and concluded that it was similar to other species of dolphins, but not the same. A new genus was created then. The specific name is given in Hose's honour. It wasn't until 1971 that the whole body of a Fraser's dolphin, as it was by then becoming known, was discovered.

Cool Facts- Named after their rounded head, the melon-headed whale lives in mass groups of up to 500 individuals and sometimes growing to over 2,000 whales. These mega pods have smaller, female-led family units within them while males travel from one giant pod to another. Melon-headed whales occasionally travel with other porpoises like Fraser’s dolphins and bottlenose dolphins along with pilot whales. Female whales give birth only once every 4 years after a 12 month pregnancy. Sadly, melon-headed whales are threatened by pollution, human hunting, bycatch, and noise. These whales have tight knit pod structures, resulting in mass beaching due to interruption of their sonar. Luckily, many of these stranded pods are saved by volunteers and authorities working to move the whales back into deeper water .

Glass mountains and K'gari (Fraser Island)

We have visited various coastal places since leaving Brisbane as we head north in Queensland. We spent two days at Terwantin/Noosa area walking on some fab beaches and catching up with school friend Keith and his wife. As we left Noosa we were advised to got through the national parks on the inland route to Hervey Bay thus seeing the Glass Mountain, called this because Cpt Cook thought the peaks looked like the glass furnaces of England. This also took us across some amazing ridges with spectacular views and also to some beautiful waterfalls and rock pools which are clearly popular with the locals for swimming. we then visited Mary Cairncross scenic reserve where we had another lovely rainforest walk and saw pademelons including one with a joey.

Today at Hervey Bay we took a boat trip to Fraser Island, now called K'gari. It was primarily an eco cruise looking for dolphins which we saw a lot of and we also saw dugong, turtles and a leopard shark. Andy also an eagle ray. I managed my first actual swim in the sea, which was blissful and warm. Weather is still holding out but the rainstorms and thunder are due to arrive tonight

El Ohana Kai llevaba a bordo un equipo de la ABC-TV formado por nueve miembros y un helicóptero, aunque las mejores escenas las tomaron los cámaras de Greenpeace desde James Bay. La película del viaje y la carnicería de los cachalotes se difundió por todo el país, y el presidente Carter manifestó su especial interés en verla. 

En julio de 1977 se celebró en Canberra, Australia, la conferencia anual de la IWC, que sirvió de fondo a las manifestacio- nes concertadas por diversos grupos contrarios a la captura de ballenas, entre ellos la Whale and Dolphin Coalition y Project Jonah, que habían logrado un apoyo considerable por medio de una campaña de formación y presión política. El último país de habla inglesa que practicaba la captura comercial de ballenas, Australia, conservaba sólo una estación en la que entraban 600 cachalotes al año —la Cheyne Beach Whaling Co., situada en Albany, al oeste de Australia— y la Whale and Dolphin Coalition pidió ayuda a Greenpeace para cerrarla.

Decididos a triunfar

El 20 de agosto de ese año partió de Sydney un convoy con destino a Albany, distante 4.800 km por las carreteras del sur de Australia, donde debía reunirse con un barco alquilado, el Fabrina, de 21 metros. Sin embargo, en el centro de Nullarbor Plain sufrieron una avería que les retrasó tres días. Así, en sólo unos pocos años, Australia, no sólo había dejado de ser país ballenero, sino bajo las plataformas salientes del Gem para impedir la descarga de los barriles por el costado.

El retraso de varias horas les impidió documentar el lanzamiento de los dos grandes barriles, pero los botes hinchables estaban ya rodeando al Gem cuando los marineros empezaron a lanzar el resto de la carga, colocando los barriles de dos en dos en la plataforma. Cuando los dos primeros asomaban por el costado, una ola apartó del Gem a la lancha más próxima, y el primer recipiente se estrelló en el mar; pero el segundo, de 270 kg de peso, alcanzó a la lancha. Estuvo a punto de golpear a sus dos ocupantes, reventó una de las cámaras de aire y destruyó el espejo de popa y el motor fuera borda. Interrumpiendo su acción, otra lancha condujo la embarcación averiada a remolque hasta el Warrior. Desde el puente del barco de Greenpeace habían filmado todo el incidente, que poco después se reprodujo en las televisiones de todo el mundo.

Después de realizar la primera de lo que había de convertirse en una serie continua de acciones contra el Gem, el Warrior puso rumbo sur, hacia España. Este país no formaba parte todavía de la IWC, y en la región de Galicia tenía su base Industria Ballenera, S. A., una empresa que explotaba cuatro balleneros dedicados a matar animales de especies en peligro de extinción para vender la carne a japón.

A principios de agosto, el Warrior localizó a los balleneros, que operaban desde dos estaciones situadas al sur de La Coruña. Cuando en el barco encargado de la captura estaban preparando el arpón, Greenpeace lanzó dos lanchas hinchables que volaron a la línea de fuego. Pese a la llegada de dos corbetas de la armada española, que trataron de interrumpir la protesta, el Rainbow Warrior logró enfrentarse al segundo barco ballenero.

Cuando el Warrior se dirigía hacia La Coruña después de tres semanas en el mar, la armada le envió un requerimiento para que entrase en el puerto militar. El Warrior «declinó el ofrecimiento’. apagó las luces cuando el barco del práctico desapareció tras el espigón, levó anclas y partió rápidamente rumbo a Portugal.

En octubre de 1978 el Warrior estaba de nuevo batallando en las heladas aguas de las islas Orcadas, al norte de Escocia, esta vez en defensa de la foca gris. Figuraba en la lista británica de especies protegidas desde 1914, pero la industria pesquera afirmaba ahora que los animales eran muy abundantes y se alimentaban a costa de las poblaciones, ya menguadas, de pescado blanco y salmón del Atlántico Norte.

Para poner fin a esta «crisis», el gobierno británico recurrió a cazadores de focas noruegos, armados con rifles y estacas, para que despachen 900 madres y 1.700 crías. Los cazadores locales obtuvieron licencias para matar otras 3.200 crías. Esta era la primera fase de un programa de descaste de seis años encaminado a reducir a la mitad la población de focas.

Choose whether to take a long walk or bike ride along the Perth Esplanade. Jump onboard a river cruise and appreciate the scenic journey to Fremantle over lunch or by twilight.
