FL is the cheap, Reaper is cheaper but if ur a mac owner Logic Pro is the go-to, unless u wanna splurge for Ableton, which is the best >:) (Logic pro is like a pro version of garage band) - - Get a nice virtual synth, Ableton includes loads, different versions of FL give u access to their vsts - harmor is a great synth, btw all synths will work in all DAW's (except Logic which uses AAX but most virtual synths come with that too.) - my favorite VST's are Serum, Sylenth1, Zebra2, Diva, Dune3, omnisphere, and I use loads of Kontakt libraries and other things - this isn't a comprehensive list but I'd suggest shooting for Zebra2 or Serum for your first purchased synth since they have massive comprehensive presets, both user-made and built-in. ah good question. maybe one day i’ll make a big post with links to everything but for the sake of answering this as quickly and comprehensively as i can right now i’m just gonna type out the names of a bunch of VSTs that i like and you can search them yourself.

quick clarification: a VST is a virtual instrument, it’s something that has its own user interface and settings and stuff. a soundfont is a collection of basic instruments taken from something, usually a game, and loaded into something like fruity soundfont player. a sample is just a sound file, like a drum kick.

VSTs:

bit box (8 bit percussion)

dvs saxophone (it’s surprisingly passable......)

freealpha (cool dreamy synth)

neochip (retro synth)

piano one (very good free piano instrument)

synth1 (SUPER versatile synth, you just have to search synth1 presets on google to get more sounds without having to mess with its knobs)

vsco2 orchestra (free all in one collection of nice-sounding real instruments)

Soundfonts:

earthbound (TONS of instruments, toby fox used it a lot for undertale)

kirby 64 (i like kirby 64)

tons more from various games i like, really just look for any soundfont for any retro game you like the sound of

my samples are almost entirely just various drum packs. there’s an infinite amount of them out there, just search for drum sample packs on google or wherever and feel free to add keywords like “jazz” or “lofi” or whatever kind you want.

i also make use of some default fl studio stuff, namely things like 3xosc and harmor. just remember to use presets when you’re just starting out, you should also feel free to experiment with the airplane control panels but you don’t have to rely on them (except for really simple things like 3xosc).

The saturation knob is literally one knob that allows you toadd some warmth and shimmer to the vocals, guitar, and any other track you’dlike…

Basically, it just adds volume and warmth.

Just don’t go overboard with the saturation, if it startssounding distorted, dial it back down a bit… unless that’s what you’re goingfor.

One huge issue I have with this plugin is not the pluginitself, but all the hoops they make you jump through to be able to use it.

You have to register with them, also register with ilok.comand then link those accounts…

AFTER that, I know… super annoying, you download the gobblerapp and install the plugin, now you can finally use it!

TNT by Ourafilmes (Windows Only)

TNT is a Distortion/Saturation plugin which wasoriginally created for audio processing on drums, as well as FX and basssounds.

It comes in Multi-band and single-band both with mono andstereo components.

Both share the same saturation/distortion algorithms but thesingle band features a Tone knob that is not present in the multi-band version.

This Tone knob features a transparent 6dB crossover filterthat separates the low and high bands where you can use differentsaturation/distortion algorithms on each band.

There is also a balance knob that helps to level both bandsbefore final output.

The Plusdistortion plug-in is an emulation of an MXRDistortion+.

This is an emulation of a Fuzz Face and a Tone Bender MKIIwith added controls for tweaking.

It runs in mono or stereo, and has selectable 2xoversampling.

The Fuzz Face was first made by Arbiter Electronics in 1966.

It had a thick, fuzzy distortion and was made famous byartists like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and David Gilmour.

The Tone Bender MKII was also released in 1966, by SolaSound.

Compared to the Fuzz Face, it has a brighter, more distortedsound.

This is an old sounding distortion/fuzz pedal effect.

There are loads of VST distortion effects out there (sometop ones too -JCM 900, green machine etc), but only a few have a bigmuff soundlike this.

Buz has a nice wide tonal range, and the ‘edge’ controlreally adds some “sleaze” to the sound.

It allows you to get that authentic 60s garage band soundwithout much effort.

This is a basic valve overdrive vst effect.

It uses almost no cpu resources and it’s very simple to use:

It only has two knobs and an on/off switch.

Simply apply the desired amount of valve overdrive to thesound using the DRIVE knob and then adjust the OUT gain knob tothe desired output level.

You can also use use the automation feature if you so desire.

This effect works best with sounds that have lots of low –low/mid frequencies.

Use it on synths, basses, guitars, leads, lo-fi sounds,voices or any sound that you want to slightly push harder, warm, overdrive oreven distort.

Tools Every Producer Should Be Using

New Year = new music, right? So we asked resident Clypster Matthew Guo (aka, Polarr)  what tools he uses when he sits down to make new music. Check out some of his recommendations below: 

DAWs

In my opinion, DAWs are more of a personal preference rather than one being better than another. Each DAW has its strengths and weaknesses. The three most popular choices would probably be FL Studio, Ableton, or Logic.

Personally I would recommend FL Studio. This specific DAW is perfect for producers that are just starting out as the user interface is one of the easiest to learn. I’ve tried other DAWs, but I find that my workflow benefits from the various features FL has to offer. One of the reasons I keep coming back to FL is it’s piano roll. Writing melodies and chords is just so easy and straightforward. But don’t be afraid to try out the others! Each DAW has similar features, just a different approach.

VSTs and Plugins

VST’s can be either free or paid. The most popular paid ones are probably Sylenth1, Massive, or Serum. I would recommend Sylenth as I use it almost exclusively for all my sound design needs. If you want to make more melodic music that focuses on big pads and supersaws, Sylenth is definitely the way to go.

If you want to make more bass-oriented music, you should look at Massive or Serum. Both of these are incredibly powerful. I personally prefer Serum over Massive, mainly because you can import your own wavetables instead of being restricted to the ones Massive comes with.

As for free plugins, the ones that come with your DAW are usually good. FL Studio comes with Harmor and Sytrus, both very powerful and great synths for really any purpose. The effects that come with FL Studio are also good if you need a simple delay, distortion, or reverb effect.

Some free third-party plugins that I love are OTT and CamelCrusher. OTT stands for Over The Top, and it’s a multiband compressor that I use on almost everything. CamelCrusher is a free distortion plugin and it is a must for basses, supersaws and leads.

Samples Packs

In my opinion, these three companies make the best sample packs: Squadpack, Samplified, and NODUSK. All three of these provide what I think are some of the most high-quality samples out there. It’s very likely that some of your favorite producers released a sample pack as well, which is a great way to look for sample packs that match a specific sound.

In addition, I’d recommend looking at sample websites like FreeSound or Looperman if you want some free foley, ambiance, or loops. I use both websites all the time and they are incredible resources for a whole variety of sounds.

Communication Software

Having a way to talk with other producers is essential for improvement. It’s also a great way to talk to people with the same interests as you. I mainly use Skype and Discord for this. There are tons of other options like Facebook groups, Discord groups, Subreddits, etc that are perfect for meeting other producers and getting feedback.

Social Networks

Putting your music out there is one of the best things you can do. It might be scary at first, but getting feedback from other producers and the general public is a great way to improve both as a producer and as a musician. Clyp is the best place to share tracks you’re working on, WIPs and current projects. The interface is super simple and very easy to use.

And of course everyone knows about SoundCloud, which is a great place to share official releases. The most important part is to make sure you’re sharing your work to as many places as possible: YouTube, Instagram, Clyp, SoundCloud, Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, etc. The more places you share, the better!

What version of FL Studio do you have? Looking into doing minor music making on the side for hobby stuffs, do I need the special versions of it for that (Producer, Signiture, etc.)?

i know there’s a lot of free VSTs online that could probably make up for whatever the less-fancy versions are missing, i think the only VSTs i actually use that are in the more expensive versions are harmor and (very occasionally) sytrus. although according to the website the $99 version is missing audio recording and certain playlist features which kinda sucks. if you’re gonna be spending money on the program i would probably recommend the producer edition, ALTHOUGH you can also just buy the fruity edition ($99) and then upgrade to producer if/when you need to for another $110 (only $10 extra than buying it right away) so that might be best.
