River Ocean featuring India: “Love And Happiness” from The Tribal EP (1994)
New York City’s Hot 97 had it all for a city station. Golden-era hip-hop, old-school boombox jams, weekend dancehall, (pre-drama king) Funkmaster Flex, Lisa Sliwa, and The Mic- Check Show hosted by Grandmaster Flash, Melle Mel & The Furious Five. They occasionally inserted the random club hit wherever they could, too. Who remembers En General’s “Muevelo” remix (’91), The Goodmen’s “Give It Up” (’92), and Sagat’s “Funk Dat” (’93)? I sure do, and never forgot about them. Here’s another house hit I caught on that frequency during my Brentwood era in the form of River Ocean & India; a super-hot trifecta of house, Latin, and tribal which I was lucky to catch only once and hit record on. It was officially mine for good when I found this last year at Riverhead’s Sunday records. It was part of a $40.00 stack of old-school / golden era 12″ singles and EP’s the owner priced out for me. Sadly, it took many of their patrons to overlook this after the fact because who the hell today knows who they are, right? That’s where I came in and saved the day.
You wanna roll around on my livin room flo’,
Play Nintendo and smoke my Indo?
I don’t think so, and I ain’t payin your bills;
Man I’m sick of these bitches and that’s way too real.
