The Ballerina and the Blade
Natasha Romanoff x Reader (AU)
genre: enemies to lovers || warnings: none
Summary: Ballet is a highly competitive and fiercely controlled world, dominated by two rival academies. You are a rising star at the prestigious ‘Académie Royale’, known for its traditional, rigid style. Natasha Romanoff is the rebellious, self-taught prodigy at the gritty ‘Shadowlands Dance Collective,’ infamous for their raw, visceral movements.
The air in the Grand Théâtre trembled with anticipation. It was the annual Grand Prix de Ballet, the most coveted prize in the world of dance, and the tension was palpable. You stood backstage, adjusting the satin of your pointe shoes. Your heart pounded a familiar, nervous rhythm. You knew your performance was flawless, technically perfect, a testament to years of dedication at the Académie Royale.
Then you saw her.
Natasha Romanoff stood across the corridor, leaning against the wall, her arms crossed over a black leather jacket that didn’t quite fit with the opulent surroundings. Her midnight hair was pulled back in a messy bun, stray strands framing a face that seemed perpetually carved from ice. You hated her. You hated her audacity, her arrogance, the way she looked down at the polished floors like she owned the place.
Shadowlands was everything the Académie was not: untamed, unconventional, and wildly popular with the younger generation of dancers. They flaunted their technique, or rather, lack of, and called it “artistic freedom.” They were a stain on the purity of ballet. And Natasha? She was their figurehead, a symbol of everything you despised.
Throughout the competition, you found yourself drawn to her, despite your better judgment. You watched her perform, watched her move with an almost feral grace, her body a language of its own. It wasn't the measured, precise beauty of your ballet; it was raw emotion, sharp and cutting, like a blade.
The judges' panel favored tradition, and you, as expected, took home the gold. The applause was loud, the cheers deafening, but all you could see was Natasha. Her expression was unreadable, those green eyes narrowed as she offered a single clap, a mockery of genuine praise.
You thought that would be the end of it. But a week later, you received an anonymous invitation to a late-night dance-off at a clandestine studio. It was obvious who had sent it.
You hesitated, your pride warring with a strange curiosity. But the thought of another stolen glance at her powerful movements won out.
When you arrived, the studio was dimly lit, only a few spotlights piercing the darkness. Natasha stood in the center, a smirk playing on her lips. “You came,” she purred, her voice low and husky.
"Don't get too excited, Romanoff. I’m here to end this absurd rivalry," you replied, doing your best to project an air of composure you didn’t feel.
"Is that so? Then prove it," she challenged, stepping aside to indicate the dance floor.
The music started, a fusion of classical and electronic beats that mirrored the clashing styles between you and her. You began with your usual precise movements, every gesture crafted with years of training. Natasha mirrored you, her movements a distorted, rebellious echo. Yet, there was a strange beauty in the way she reacted, improvising and pushing the boundaries of your steps.
As the night wore on, the rivalry began to blur. You found yourself reacting to her, adapting to her intensity. Your controlled ballet began to incorporate her raw power, and her aggressive style softened with your grace. The dance became a conversation, a language woven from steps and leaps, a dialogue of bodies that transcended words.
The physical closeness, the sweat, the shared exhaustion brought a different kind of tension. The air crackled between you, a slow burn that was both terrifying and intoxicating.
Finally, the music stopped. You both stood, chests heaving, the studio silent but for your ragged breaths. You couldn't meet her eyes, a strange mix of shame and anticipation washing over you.
"You... you’re not so bad, for a polished doll,” Natasha confessed, her voice barely a whisper.
You looked up, surprise flickering through your eyes. "And you, for a feral wolf, have… potential.”
A slow smile spread across Natasha's face, a genuine smile that reached her eyes and turned them from ice to something warmer, something... alluring.
"Maybe," she said, stepping closer, "maybe we could explore that potential... together."
Your heart hammered in your chest. The rivalry, the hate, the carefully constructed barriers you had built around yourself seemed to crumble with those words. You found yourself leaning in, the world narrowing to the space between you.
It wasn't the kind of love that bloomed overnight. It was a slow burn, a gradual unraveling of animosity into something deeper, something unexpected. It was the fusion of two worlds, the blending of two dances, the story of a Ballerina and a Blade, who found harmony amidst their clashing rhythms.
And then, one night, in that dimly lit studio, beneath the glow of the spotlights, you kissed her, the taste of rebellion and the promise of something new lingering on your lips.
It was just the beginning of your dance.

Saw steven universe recently, and now i'm wondering how a nana/torino/toshinori gem fusion would look like. :o What do you think their gems would be????
I’m gonna be so real, I never actually followed Steven Universe. I think I hopped on just for the show finale, and then the movie. That being said, I think an SU-fusion (incorporating, of course, OFA too) would be like…
[Art is going above the read-more. tl;dr, One For All 1-7 are various incarnations of White Diamond (Yoichi), Sorahiko is the faithful Pearl, and thousands of years later, they create Toshinori, a synthetic Pink Diamond]
Okay but bear with me we’re going to ignore several ruling principles of Steven Universe. One is the gender rule. Two is the Gem class hierarchy. Three is the bonkers timeline and alternate history that SU functions off of.
AFO (Zen), OFA (Yoichi), and that Qingqing City Baby are the original Diamonds. AFO and QCB are forever squabbling, and OFA hates being caught in the middle, so Yoichi runs away with his assigned Pearl, Sorahiko, placement: right hand. (YEAH THAT’S RIGHT. IT’S TECHNICALLY A VESTIGESTORINO STORY. CHEER WITH ME. YAYYYYYY)
(It is deeply funny for me to picture Machia as a Pearl. BUT WAIT, IT’S ACTUALLY TRAGIC.
GIGANTOMachia is a corrupted fusion. Fusion with what? IDK. AFO said, “I wanna see what happens,” and Machia said, like a loyal dog, “Okey.”)
We know that Diamonds are capable of disguise. Pink Diamond turns into Rose Quartz? Yoichi turns into Kudou turns into Bruce etc etc etc. I’m taking inspo from one of @/amaranthdahlia’s posts where Yoichi’s white eyes are more of a prism/holograph than an unreflective matte white--by this leap of logic, Yoichi (White Diamond) is able to color change too. The placement of the gem is always at the heart.
SO we eventually get to the Nana incarnation. At this point, she and Sorahiko have been joined at the hip for thousands of years. It’s kind of impossible not to hear about the various power grabs both AFO and QCB have been making, but Sorahiko’s been clocked out for thousands of years. He doesn’t give a shit about the tyrant and cult leader. Unbeknownst to Sorahiko, OFA DOES still give a shit about their siblings and the spillover consequences, so OFA has been hatching a plan to introduce a new Diamond.
Not a new incarnation. A new Diamond.
“You’re crazy,” says Sorahiko. “We have literally been alive for thousands of years. You think we can just make a new Diamond and train them to fight and win against your siblings?”
“Obviously,” says Nana.
And THAT is how we get our first Synthetic Pink Diamond, Toshinori, placement: stomach.
Now what do two Diamonds and a Pearl make? Because Toshinori’s a Synthetic Diamond, and apparently any Pearl fusion is named after multi-colored gemstones, I’d probably land somewhere at calling them Mystic Quartz. They are a literally huge powerhouse. I don’t have the creative spoons to design them.
(Thousands of years later, Izuku is your regular old human. Or, if petty family drama is your flavor of choice, he’s AFO’s attempt at making a Synthetic Diamond.)
#bnha#shigaraki yoichi#shimura nana#gran torino#torino sorahiko#yagi toshinori#all might#one for all diamond universe#shih.txt#shih's art#asks#anon#god i can't believe i got this far with the concept#yoichi's shirt is based off ashitaka's outfit#sorahiko is meant to be in one of those imperial court official robes#now as far as factions go; afo has his lov; and qcb gets mla#ofa gets the heroes and u.a. Do you have headcanons for Nezha, Erlang, or any FSYY characters?
Yes, and it's all pretty nerdy and heavily inspired by IRL history (I have a "FSYY but more historical" AU I've been procrastinating forever on).
Long post ahead, you've been warned.
Yang Jian
-Before he became Yuding's disciple, he came from the Shu civilization of ancient Sichuan.
-Both him and his sister (not novel canon, just bringing in Lotus Lantern stuff for funsies) are born from the union between Yunhua, the Heavenly Emperor's youngest sister, and a mortal whose name has been lost to time, for which the former was imprisoned and the latter was killed.
-Though he did not reside permanently in fantasy Sanxingdui or Jinsha, when the Queen Mother's emissaries brought the two children into the mortal realm, looking for a potential adoptive family, they settled on a chieftain of the Qiang people who was part of the "clan coalition" answering to the authority of the theocratic Shu kingdom, and had his clan represented by a bronze head on the Shu capital's altar.
(His eldest son has died prematurely because of disease, which technically makes his adopted kids the second and third child respectively.)
-The siblings had very vague memories of their time in QMoW's palace, though they just thought she was the white tiger goddess of the Ba people in the eastern part of the Sichuan basin, because she's appearing in her half-beast form.
-Speaking of the Shu kingdom: the Shu king who ruled for most of his childhood and youth claimed descent from Yufu the Cormorant King, the third mythical god-king of Shu, after Cancong the Silkworm King and Baiguan the Cypress King.
-The form his third eye took was a fusion of his own people's customs and the legends of the ancient Shu kings. When closed, it looks no different from the tattoo favored by Qiang warriors, but when active, the Shu priests called it the "Piercing Eye of the Silkworm King"——Cancong was said to have either vertical eyes or protruding pupils in legends, which the biggest bronze masks on the ritual poles were modelled on.
-As a mark of divine favor, it would've earned him an instant entry into the priestly ranks even if the awakening of this new ability didn't help him slay two Fire Crows, dangerous fiery creatures spawned from the embers of the Sun Crows Yi shot down.
-His dog, Skyhowler, is the natural predator of Fire Crows, birthed from the surge of Yin-aligned Qi during eclipses. However, when he rescued the whimpering puppy from inside a charred tree stump in the aftermath of the two crows' rampage, it was nowhere near its fearsome adult size and speed.
-But, before his training could be completed, Yuding flew over from his abode on the snowy mountains and make Yang Jian his disciple. The priests ended up taking in his sister as a substitute after his departure.
-I personally HC Yuding as this an extremely professional, strict, and impersonal college professor, in a world where your master is pretty much seen as your second parent. A man who is cold, but not cruel, with a razor-sharp focus on his studies and pursuit of knowledge and little else.
-And Yang Jian can admire that candidness——he doesn't want or need another surrogate father figure, even though their own human one had passed away a few years prior as a victim of the average bronze age lifespan.
-His sister would have clashed terribly with him, though, which was probably why he didn't take her in as a student.
-Like, Yuding is a good teacher, but not a nice person. Not a terrible person, either, just…about as approachable and emotional as a statue of jade.
-So, despite setting Yang Jian on his tracks to the Investiture War by revealing that 1) he took Yang Jian in on the behalf of someone who knew about his real parents, and 2) this "someone" would tell him the truth as a reward after he was done fighting in the WOI, Yuding was actually one of the most competent mentors among the Chan 12.
-Granted, it isn't a high bar, anyone would look competent next to Taiyi, Chijing Zi and Guangcheng Zi, but overall, their relationship is one of polite mutual respect——a disciple who is extremely talented and dedicated, and a master who pushes him exactly as hard as he needs.
-Which means…all the body horror potential that comes with the 72 transformations is just as true for Yang Jian as it is for SWK.
-He's not the gleeful show-off SWK is, but I can imagine him just calmly and strategically testing the limits of his regeneration and shapeshifting arts in a manner that's rather horrifying for anyone who isn't Yuding or one of the more body-modification focused Chan 12.
-Like, turning off his sense of pain completely for a week to understand the function pain serves, and how to tune the sensation to an ideal level where he can gain useful feedback without being impaired. Or testing how long it takes to regenerate a limb charred to the bone by Samadhi Fire vs. Thunderfire (lightning).
-As for his character in general? Well, I'm obsessed with the Ming annotator's comment, "Those who are the nicest and most obedient are often the most cruel too." because it sums up Yang Jian so damn well.
-Like, FSYY's Yang Jian is such a different yet similar character to the more well-known version of Yang Erlang popularized by JTTW. And whereas that similarity includes the trickster charisma, it also includes this underlying current of clinical ruthlessness.
-Nezha's violence is the innocent cruelty of children mingled with the grand, dispassionate cruelty of Fate choosing the best executioner for its selected targets. SWK's violence is so funny and rooted in his charisma that you forget to wonder what the same action would look like if it was anyone other than SWK doing it.
-Yang Jian's violence is the calculated, strategic cruelty of a hunter with his prey in sight. He always has meticulous reasoning to fall back on, for himself and others, much like how he seldom shows anger openly, and even when he does, it's gone the moment he returns to the battlefield. Anger is the raw material he forges cold arrowheads out of.
-But that cold, clinical ruthlessness is reserved for enemies, keep strictly separate from the calm, polite senior brother and disciple known to his comrades and seniors, in the same way he keeps his anger from showing on his face and driving his hands too much.
-It's easy to look at his most ruthless deeds and apply them to him as a person wholesale, to fall into the most stereotypical portrayal of Erlang across different works, but he is still the nicest AND most cruel, and it's arguably this dichonomy that gives rise to the tendency to see him as either the nicest (heroic, victim, secret rebel) or the cruelst (villain, heartless hound of heaven).
-Except both his niceness and his cruelty are genuine, and that's what makes him scary.
Nezha:
-Boy do I have a lot written about him in private docs, and most of my personal preferences are probably in Unpopular Opinion territory.
-Number One: it isn't an accident. He kills Ao Bing intentionally in the same way a kid pulls wings off insects intentionally.
-See, I'm very annoyed by what I called the "It's not your fault" approach to Nezha's backstory in fanworks: Nezha brings up the whole unalive himself thing, goes "But I get better, and besides, I kinda have it coming", while the other characters are horrified, try to convince him it's fucked up and he's no "demon child", and also offering him comfort when he does reluctantly acknowledge the childhood trauma.
(Frankly, FSYY Nezha will be downright insulted by that kind of response.)
-Or, alternately, attributing all the wrong things he'd done to Li Jing's parenting——paradoxically, by defining Nezha solely through his relation to Li Jing, it ends up taking away his character agency and potential.
-Like, why are you only okay with Nezha being violent when it's directed either towards Terribad People Who Deserve It or the result of an innocent accident?
-Why can't his violence be a vital, yet flawed part of himself because that's what he is built for, he's fated to be a weapon in a very messed-up way AND finds genuine joy and freedom and camaraderie in the heat of battle?
-In fact, let that enjoyment, the drive for violence, be a major complication in his wartime and post-WOI experience.
-To be Fate's executioner is the greatest honor (no one else is marked out in the same way) as well as the greatest tragedy (its nature does not allow you to choose otherwise, even when you think you are defying some kind of ultimate authority, and every gifts it gives is part of a brutal exchange).
-Which pretty much sums up his feelings about the WOI: sure, he has said and done some stupid shit, seen plenty of stupid shit on both sides, grieved and raged about his friend's death, and has an unconscious identity crisis about whether someone born for and forged in war should ever pretend to be something else, merely by pointing the spears at a different, smaller group of acceptable targets or putting his weapons down…
-Yet it's also the best damn years of his life.
-He genuinely enjoys battle, enjoys bringing chariots charges to a halt by slamming into them with equal speed and ferocity, enjoys soaring on his wheels and tossing his ring at opponents. The shedding of blood and taking of heads, the feeling of being fast and invulnerable and never having to hold back, of being recognized for his prowess and doing what he's literally made for——with style and sick burns.
-His battlefield experience has been liberating and scarring at the same time, which is a source of great frustration when some mortals and younger immortals seem incapable of understanding the war as anything but this horrible thing he's forced into, against his will, by his father and master.
-Of all things, THIS is what they are pitying him for? The best part he opted into with great enthusiasm and still remembered fondly, where he doesn't even have to see Li Jing for like, over half of the entire war, and they thought he had to be FORCED into it?
-His love for battle and the camaraderie he built with his fellow Chan disciples can co-exist with all the nasty gnawing feelings from his companions dying and coming back as gods and not being an entirely different person but still being irreversibly changed by deification, thank you very much.
-Yeah, this excerpt from my old unposted rant-slash-character study sums it up best:
A child, a youth, isn't supposed to kill. Isn't supposed to be proud about their kills. Isn't supposed to be pretty nonchalant about violence even after he learned that dishing out death indiscriminately is a Bad Thing. Isn't supposed to miss his formative years on the battlefield after he grew up and became a martial deity. He was all that, back then, yet they couldn't be comfortable about that part of him unless they convinced themselves he was forced into this life of violence as an innocent victim, whose sufferings are never the consequences of his deeds. He hasn't been a child for a long, long time. As cliched as it was, he has learned his lessons. Been on both ends of death, felt its full impact in order to be an efficient executioner instead of an indiscriminate destroyer. And he doesn't regret learning those lessons when he looked back at it, because the grief and loss he felt won't hurt that much if he hadn't already begun to care, something a mere weapon is never capable of. Yet they are now telling him he shouldn't have learned those lessons at all? That he is fine just the way he was before his resurrection, delivering death flippantly like it's some kind of children's game, and him taking full responsibilities for what he did was a proof of his victimhood instead of one of his few acts of maturity? He's supposed to be ashamed and guilty about who he was——not because he was some "Demon Child", but because he's far from the uncomplicated victim they thought him to be, while still impacted by the war, because he genuinely doesn't feel anything about some of the things they think he should feel bad about. And it's far harder to tell folks to knock that shit off without coming off across as an asshole, or for them to misinterpret it as him "being in denial and seeing his own trauma as weakness".
Lei Zhenzi:
-In the novel, King Wu doesn't let him into the inner palace during their first meeting, for fear of scaring their mother and other female attendants. Understandable, but it probably still stings.
-Which is why I'm HCing King Wen's mother, Tai Jiang (not the name on the history book, FSYY novel just mixes up names again), paying a visit to her adoptive grandson in private instead. From the few paragraphs we've gotten of her, she is a skilled diviner and also still alive at the end of the war.
"I taught your esteemed father the arts of divination. If the very futures I've seen hasn't terrified me into an early grave, your face won't either."
-To insert some more history into the matter: after the fall of Shang, Ji Dan, the Duke of Zhou (King Wu's brother and regent for his young heir) had crushed the Rebellion of the Three Dukes, which is started by King Zhou's prince, Wu Geng, and King Wu's other three brothers who were there to supervise him.
-LZZ got involved in the family infighting too, if only to stop the Shang remnants from going back to their old bullshit again.
-Speaking of Ji Dan, the future Duke of Zhou is actually the member in the Zhou royal family LZZ is the closest to during the war.
-Even more so than Ji Fa/King Wu, who, unlike his novel self and much closer to his Pinghua counterpart, was very much the avenging son worthy of the Martial King title and spent most of his time on maintaining the human coalition between various rebelling marquises and vassal kingdoms.
-Ji Dan, however, takes after their adopted grandmother in his soft-spoken demeanor that conceals a great amount of determination and cunning, and shares the musical talent of the the late Boyi Kao——this is the man who would go on to create the Rites of Zhou and be idealized by Confucius.
(In the novel, he's mentioned as helping both JZY and King Wu in major ceremonies by building ritual terraces and reading out declarations, as well as fighting a few battles himself.)
-Fun fact: there are archaeological evidence that the Shang royal tombs had been systematically looted and destroyed by the Zhou armies, likely after the Rebellion of the Three Dukes. I HC that, in the post-FSYY universe, the Duke of Zhou ordered LZZ to carry that out, and he did not regret it one bit.
-Even before seeing the skulls of sacrificed prisoners that piled up in the tomb tunnels, before fighting off the ghosts of ancient warriors who followed their king into death, he understood that the entire Shang religion was built on feeding countless bodies into the maws of dead royal ancestors.
-It's the reason why, despite Boyi Kao being his favorite brother, Ji Dan was even more unwilling to speak of him, and sometimes gagged for seemingly no reason at all at the sight of meat in cooking vessels.
-He does, however, feel a brief moment of pity for Wu Geng, who could not escape the bloody legacy of the Shang despite being spared by King Wu when he was a toddler. Unlike his father and demonic mother, he was but a puppet of the Duke of Zhou's brothers, who knew very well that neither the fall of the Shang nor the Zhou occupation had wiped out the deeply-rooted practices and faith among the Shang remnants and capitalized on his lineage.
-Also: Yunzhong Zi's prophetic poem for him said he'll protect the Zhou dynasty for 800 years. Whether out of genuine love for his grandmother or the oath to King Wu on his deathbed, that's what he'll do.
-Which means, even though he gained a deeper understanding of the ugly interplay between family ties and royal power ever since quelling the rebellion, even though he could not bring himself to kill the queen responsible for the succession crisis that doomed Western Zhou, even if Eastern Zhou is just a hollow shell in the Spring-Autumn & Warring States era, he still served as its guardian deity.
-Until he stopped, and the small rump states fell to the Qin.
-Maybe he's just sick of it all, his original family long reduced to dust by the march of time. Maybe he sees that the Mandate of Heaven has abandoned Zhou at last, just like it once abandoned the Shang. But he left everything behind and flew away into the vast oceans, beyond the islands where immortals dwell, and no one has seen him since.

Drifting - Part 3
The Nerve Suit was skintight and left nothing to the imagination.
Casper had already tried plucking the thin layer of jet black second skin away from himself, but hadn’t been able to get any purchase on it with his covered fingertips. Looking back to the mirror, the only thing exposed was his face and shaved head. The young man grimaced, he’d never been one for hair styles, but cutting off his messy brown curls had been an unpleasent twist that he hadn’t expected when agreeing to this experiment. Glancing down in the mirror, he instinctively covered himself, the suit rendered him genderless at a glance, but it was still rather obvious after more than a passing glance.
“Casper?” Came a voice and the now telltale sound of robotic legs whirring and walking towards the room the human was stood in. He glanced back at his normal clothes, then at the mirror again.
“In here.” The young man called out. The sounds of the robotic legs go louder until he saw Wren appear in the mirror in the doorway to the room. She was atop her bipedal robotic platform that most geckins used around anyone larger than their single foot in height.
“They’re all ready for you. Last chance to run without anyone seeing.” The foot tall green geckin offered without emotion in her voice. Neither judging, nor leading him in a certain way. Casper suspected that she had her own horse in this race, but out of everyone who the young man had spoken to; she’d been the most warm.
“This is going to be fun.” Casper began, convincing himself as much as her as he turned and, whilst trying to ignore that he was very much on display to her, she matched his pace as he marched toward the hanger. Speed and stride wasn’t a problem for the geckin, at least not for their platforms. They could outrun Casper at the push of a button, completely ignoring they’d outlast him with the fusion cores that powered them.
“It’s certainly going to be interesting, but why would you use the word ‘fun’?” Wren asked calmly, keeping the conversation light, but still obviously monitoring the man. The small green geckin had become his doctor and psychologist of sorts. Carefully watching him and seemingly keeping the more extreme ‘Zeet’, the head engineer, in check.
“Well, we have media and fantasy stories about piloting mechs. Whole franchises that are built around the concept of bipedal or multi-legged technicals. Apparently, I’m living the dream, and I didn’t even need to train for it.” Casper shrugged, feeling oddly disconnected from the current events.
“You understand this is unlikely to be easy right?” The small green alien gently pointed out. A glance down at her and Casper noted how her neck ruffle was pulled tight against her. He gave her a wane smile and nodded.
“Oh yes, Zeet has explained at length that it’ll be like learning to walk again. Moving an arm or leg on its own, is its own thing. Even all four limbs is another level, but I’m going to be controlling a thirty-foot mech, dealing with its balance, its systems, everything.” Casper grinned and chuckled as they entered the hanger proper, and the noise went up significantly. Casper had to raise his voice somewhat to ensure Wren could hear him, she had to practically shout back at him.
“He made a big deal that I would struggle to balance it without a tail.” The human said with a smirk.
Wren grinned a sharp grin.
Taking a moment to look up at the giant machine, Casper could only be impressed.
The mech itself was a rough translation of a human body. Two legs, two arms, a torso and a head on top. They had toyed with the idea of a more mobile machine, with digitigrade legs or even giving him equipment for his first outing, but Wren had been present and argued them all down. In the end, it was her pointing out, not for Casper’s safety, but the cost of breaking or damaging complicated equipment if the first piloting effort failed.
No point in having a fancy jetpack if a panicked human trigged the jets and crashed into the ceiling, rending the bay unusable for the foreseeable future.
So as Casper gave the giant bipedal vehicle a critical eye, he noted that it was surprisingly thin. The legs were slim, several meters wide to a normal human, but compared to the rest of the mech it felt like they were too small to lift such bulk. Likewise, the arms were malnourished, obviously barebones. He could see pistons and wires. They were all strapped down and had metal plates protecting them in places, but this mech was not designed for anything other than an experiment.
A prototype. Saying their true mechs often looked like geckins; digitigrade legs for explosive speed and massive mechanical tails for balance. Casper had to guess that this was the first, truly humanoid machine they’d made… and only in the short space of time too.
Their industry capability was frightening.
“He was quite upset that he had to remove the tail section of the mech. No point in adding parts and complexity for the first step.” She pointed out, that wasn’t something Casper had heard yet. Interesting. The next time Casper spoke, it was to Zeet in the form of a short, sharp ‘good luck’ and nod.
“You look ready, like a real geckin pilot.” The blue geckin pointed out, gesturing to the skintight Nerve Suit from his position on his own mobile platform.
“Just a bit taller.” Casper grinned, but realised he made a faux par with the immediate frown form Zeet. “Sorry. Nerves. The suits pretty tight, I didn’t realise it would be like this.” The young quickly said, running a gloved hand over his stomach. Thankfully, this change in topic was enough to remove the dark look on the blue geckin’s face as they rejoined the conversation again. He had to remember that geckins were touchy about their height…
“Yes, well the Nerve Suit is needed to ensure the body has as little feedback from your true body as possible. It should be plenty light as it’s only a pawful of atoms thick.” Casper pulled a face and rubbed his fingertips together. He felt pressure, but not sensation other than how slick his grip was.
“You ready to climb in? Remember, we’re just calibrating. Remember; don’t be disappointed if you can’t run yet, all we’re looking for is movement. Wiggle the feet, twitch the fingers. Look up and down.” Zeet rambled, nervous all of a sudden at the prospect of the human experiment. He continued to run through a check list of basic movements.
“I understand Zeet, I’ll do my best for you.” Casper promised, unsure if he could reach out and touch the shoulder of the geckin, or if that would be too far. Was he supposed to be the nervous one? With everything going on with humanity, it seemed impossible that they would allow anything to happen to the young man. Like walking along a tourist bridge and it has a glass floor; this was all simulated danger, not real danger. Right? Casper turned to the mech itself and headed towards the team of technicians who were waiting for him. They were crowded around the open hatch where Casper would climb in like a pack of scavengers waiting for their prey to fall over.
The clamber into the pilot chamber wasn’t the issue, nor was the coffin-like pod that required Casper to lay down with his arms crossed over his chest, it was the needles. The pod pressed in on his legs, hips and shoulders, his arms were still free for the moment, but would be locked into place when the sarcophagus’s lid came down into place. The inside of the casket was filled with a gel that had given way by several inches as he sat down, then shuffled himself in. If he was struck by anything, or more likely; fell over, the gel would absorb the impact to his physical body. It would also swell, once he was sealed, securing him in place.
“Legs in place!” Called one of the techs as they fit a breather over Casper’s nose and mouth.
Then, after a moment, Casper was stabbed.
Along the various rivers and paths that followed his nervous system, hundreds of hair thin needles all stabbed into him like a wave of bee stings, causing the human to grunt and flinch. The shoulder locks stopped him from moving too much as the techs gave curt nods that all was well. Then a series of five needles thrust into and along the young man’s spine and he lost all feeling of his body.
His eyes snapping open and gasping at the sudden pain and of a fear that something had gone wrong! He couldn’t move!
Zeet appeared in his vision, next to two of the techs that were disconnecting tubes from the mech itself.
“You’re good. First disconnect from your nervous system is always the worst they say. We’re about to give up control on the mech, you’ll be in the dark for a few minutes, but that’s it. Blink twice if you understand.” Asked the blue geckin, staring down at the human. Without a voice, the young man, blinked twice.
“Outstanding, good human. Lets get this closed and submerge him. Casper? You’ll hear me over the radio. Follow my instructions. You’re going to be seeing the world from a whole new perspective.”
Casper tried to nod but was reminded again that he couldn’t move at all. He just laid there.
Flat on his back, from the perspective of a corpse in a grave, looking up at the techs and Zeet, as if they were mourners about to throw the first handfuls of dirt upon him.
Then the lid of his casket slid closed and sealed against him. He felt pressure on his body as the gel filled casket embraced him and then all was still. He couldn’t move, he couldn’t see or hear. He couldn’t smell anything. His body wanted to twitch, to move and kick. But even when he tried to test the limits of the pod, of the gel, he couldn’t feel anything. He couldn’t even tell if he was moving!
Panic was rather rapidly growing within his chest as he lay there, alone in a sensationless void.
Was this what death felt like?
“-asper? Casper can you hear me?” Zeet’s voice appeared in his head.
He tried to instinctively respond, to say ‘[Yes]’, but immediately felt and knew it was pointless, his [paralyzed throat and mouth meant talking was out].
“Excellent! We’ve got your feed here. You don’t need your throat anymore.” Came the excited reply.
[What?]
“You’re connected to the machine’s transponder. You talk, or try to talk like normal, and we will read you.” Zeet explained, Casper could hear the excitement in his voice.
[Is everything okay?]
“It’s going fantastic! We literally just turned this system on and you’re already communicating with us. You’re a natural, human! You ready for more systems?”
With nothing better to do, Casper thought of his reply.
[Sure, let’s do it.]
“Alright, give me a minute.”
It was a strange method to talk. Casper could… feel? The correct way to communicate. It wasn’t his unprocessed thoughts being transmitted. He could feel what he was sending to Zeet, like he was approving every syllable. What information the human wanted to send, was sent, and nothing more. There was no tone, no emotion. His words, thoughts, sentences, were words on a screen.
Light appeared, briefly blinding Casper, who squinted, and the hangar immediately came into focus. His head was drooped forward and for the most part he could only see the floor that had been directly in front of the mech itself. There were geckins down there all running to and fro. Focusing on one, Casper’s vision rapidly zoomed in and he could see each and every individual scale on the yellow geckin tech’s face, before Casper relaxed his eyes a fraction and his vision pulled out slightly. The geckin tech monitored a console that sat beneath the tower where Casper had entered, seemingly unaware he was being watched.
“Okay, we’ve turned on your external cameras. Do you feel any new sensations? Any sort of… connections that you can access?” Zeet asked carefully.
[I can see.]
“Yes, we want you to access those so you can see out of the cameras attached to the recon unit.”
[No Zeet, I can see. There’s a yellow geckin at my feet.]
“You can- Hoy! Who’s below us?” Zeet shouted, Casper could tell it was loud, but the radio wasn’t being ‘heard’ in the sense that the human wasn’t using his ‘ears’ to hear the radio. He was… understanding it without the need for such things.
As Casper watched, the yellow geckin reacted, looking up and waving his arms up at someone before shrugging.
“You’re right! You’ve already… Hah! Okay then. This is beyond what I was hoping for. I think we can jump a few steps.”
“Sir, this is ill-advised.” Wren voice said, coming over the radio loud and clear.
“You’re here as a courtesy doctor, you’re welcome, but now as a courtesy, you will not interfere with my work.”
[What’s happening?]
“We’re going to disconnect you from our power and control. You will have full control of the mech and its systems.”
[You said that was dangerous?]
“For a normal pilot yet. But your aptitude for this was off the charts. I think it’s time to jump a few levels.”
There was a flurry of activity as the geckins who were milling about at Casper’s feet suddenly began disconnecting from the various consoles and began disappearing from the edge of the human’s vision. He could see the metal platforms that counted as the mech’s feet, but aside from that and the bottom of the tower, there was just the hanger floor.
“Alright, we’ve got everyone to a safe distance. In a few seconds, we’re passing control of the whole mech to yourself. We won’t be in control of anything. You ready?”
[As I’ll ever be.]
“Good. Hand off in 3… 2… 1…”
The change was sudden and startling. Immediately, Casper’s legs buckled as his knees weren’t prepared to take the sudden weight of his body once more. His arms flung forward as the ground rushed up to greet him, but he stopped himself from bouncing his head off the concrete by completing a half press-up.
There was too much, too fast. His body felt, stiff; tight. Like he’d been in a cramped position for so long that his whole body was sluggish.
It was too much. Casper felt lightheaded, as if he was suffocating! His heart was pounding in his chest so fast that it was humming! A giant metal hand reached up and clutched at his metal torso, sparks flying as the two metals clashed against each other.
[Something’s wrong!]
“It’s fine, just activate your intakes.” Zeet ordered calmly, despite the panic rising.
“He’s panicking, eject him.”
“No, he just needs to start up the intakes. Casper? Your reactor needs air flow, active the intakes.”
“Power it down Zeet! His vitals are spiking.”
[I don’t. I can’t. My chest feels tight!]
The human was panicking, he could feel something was wrong, like he was running on empty, like he needed to close his eyes and lay down. It felt like he was dying.
“Casper! Batteries are running low, active the intakes!”
The words were less clear now, like his mind was swimming. The young man felt for the first time since getting into the machine his vision failed, like he was blinking despite not needing to before now.
Wren’s voice broke through the roaring and nonsense that Casper was being bombarded by.
“Breathe Casper! Take a breath!”
The human sucked in air as deeply as he could shocked that he had forgotten such a normal thing.
From outside, the vents that lined the pectoral area of the mech slammed open with great turbines that sucked in the vital oxygen needed for the reactor that sat in the centre of the mech’s chest. It burped to life and the exhausts along the back of the machine began to spew heat and a cough of black smoke. To the geckin engineers, the ever-pleasant noise of a system booting up to full power whined to life as the human mech heaved in an oddly biological movement.
There were no ‘lungs’ built into the machine, only vents, fans, and a reactor to power it all, but the way it was gyrating, put only the image of someone who had been suffocating gulping in air into their minds. The mech was currently on one knee, the other leg folded to support its weight. One arm was placed on the ground and the second was still touching the chest plate, scratching the bare, unpainted metal.
[I’m okay.]
“’Breathe’ doctor?” Snapped Zeet, not addressing or not seeing the text on his console that Casper had sent.
“He’s not trained on the technical specifications of a machine. His point of reference is what he can feel. What he knows.” Replied Wren, defensively, but not backing down.
“He said they had media of mechs, that it was a common fantasy. What popular media doesn’t have common sense specs?!” Barked Zeet’s voice.
“He’s not a geckin, he’s human. The importance of certain subject will be different.” She replied, still sturdy in her observation.
The voices in Casper’s head continued to bicker as the world stopped swimming and he slowly raised his head to look around. He felt less sluggish now, like he had started to shake the cobwebs from his bones and movement was easier, as if he was awake again. He felt strong. Fast. As if his body not just wouldn’t fail him; but couldn’t.
== 0 ==
To the outside, whilst Zeet and Wren continued to argue the toss, the techs watched as the giant mech’s recon unit raised up and scanned the hanger. With a great heave, one of the legs raised the body up in a single smooth movement before the second leg straightened and held the giant mech upright and proud.
The mechanical hands, simple things, were raised as the cameras of the recon unit that sat atop the mech inspected them, as if seeing them for the first time. This was more than any of the techs had expected. New pilots barely got their radios working after the first hour, let alone movement. Why was it so… biological in its movements?
“Sir?” Called the head technician, up at the two geckins that were still arguing over utilizing the correct terminology in a professional setting and pointedly ignoring the several hundred-ton mech that was now moving around in a manner that was thought impossible for the timeline.
The mech took a single step forward, then a second.
“Sir?!” Shouted the head tech again, more urgently now.
Thankfully, Zeet and the good doctor paused their debate to look round, only to realize the mech was no longer where they left it.
It was currently headed towards the great metal shutter that blocked the outside world from the hanger. Beyond the shutter was the proving grounds, where pilots that had finally fully integrated with their mechs would prove that they were ready for furthering the geckin interests.
