Thanks PRR! This should be easy enough there's not really a pressure for it to be the most important things. Currently, working through letting myself feel again, which is a bit overwhelming (turns out one of the reasons I was suppressing emotions was because I was feeling distress on a pretty regular basis), so it's good to have an excuse to remind myself of what makes me happy. I'm going to focus on the small things.

Music Honestly sometimes music is more of a distraction for me from what's going on, rather than something that I go to when I'm happy. Here's a random sample of artists I've been listening to: + Jean Sibelius + Rene Aubry + 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee Original Cast + Mitski + The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals Cast + MCR Plus, I like playing music too. Nothing more cathartic than playing some Chopin.

TTRPGs I think you've seen them in my blog at this point. Currently running a Traveller (Mongoose 2e 2022 update). Great way to unwind an pretend to be various characters that I made up on the spot, because I didn't anticipate a particular random encounter coming up ( eg. Teens who are members of a key-based subculture). I also like reading rulebooks. And then not playing those games.

Reading books don't do this nearly enough. But I really do enjoy it. Plus, reading helps me study people without them looking at me weird. Last few books I've been reading: + Gideon the Ninth (Tamsyn Muir) + Bi (Julia Shaw) + Left Hand of Darkness (Ursula K Le Guin)

The MANY Conference in Saratoga Springs was great! I went to a lot of interesting session and spoke with a lot of wonderful people. It’s always a lot of fun to be with other people (nearly 400 of them) who are passionate about museums. I can’t wait until next year in Rochester!

I have long been blocked by @glumshoe for reasons that are a complete mystery to me (see, can’t even tag them) - I don’t know them, I’ve never followed them, and nothing in my search of past posts shows anything other than a handful of completely benign interactions. Maybe I committed some heinous act against them in a past life? No idea. But it’s extremely unfortunate because I just saw their post about collecting the worst classical names to name a child, and as a classicist in wounds be greatly that I can’t chime in. Because the answer is Jade. Jade is not a mythological figure, but it does derive from the Spanish ijada, and ultimately from the Vulgar Latin iliata which was gladiator slang for genitalia. The precious stone jade derives its name from sweaty gladiator crotches because the Spanish thought that crushed jade was a great cure for sexually transmitted diseases - just sprinkle a bit down there then. Most etymologies translate this rather more delicately as ‘flank’ instead of groin, but academics were pretty prudish people for most of the last three centuries. Rather infamously the 1919 Loeb translation of the poems of a third-century Roman satirist Marcus Valerius Martialis (know as Martial) found some of his explicit content so objectionable that they translated some poem translated into Italian. Thus, Martial 2.62:

Quod pectus, quod crura tibi, quod bracchia uellis, quod cincta est breuibus mentula tonsa pilis, hoc praestas, Labiene, tuae — quis nescit? — amicae. Cui praestas, culum quod, Labiene, pilas?[1]

Is given this ‘English’ translation:

Il perche ti dissetoli il petto, le gambe, le braccia, il perche la rasa tua mentola e cinta di curti peli, chi non sa che tutto questo, O Labieno, prepari per la tua arnica? Per chi, O Labieno, prepari tu il culo che dissetoli? [2]

Which is rather unhelpful, A modern - and less sensitive - translator translates it thus:

Your chest, your legs, your arms — you pluck them. You’ve a ring of stubble round the base of your cock (which you shave). You do it for your girlfriend, Labienus; we all know. So, who are you waxing your crack for? [3]

A bit much for stuffy Edwardian sensibilities. The Victorians went even further - the main selling point of 1868′s The Index Expurgatorius of Martial, published anonymously for private circulation of only a hundred and fifty copies, is that is a collection of all the epigrams of Martial that previous translators had simply left out of his completed works - not because they were missing, but because they were too prudish. Anyways, this was supposed to be about the name Jade and I got sidetracked into rambling about Martial (it happens.) Please let @glumshoe know that both Jade and Martial are names that might be considered dreadfully salubrious, or at least signs of poor research, because I cannot. Citations 1. Martial. Epigrams I. DEATH THREATS AND GASSING

THE PAST 4-5 DAYS I HAVE BEEN SUBJECTED TO DEATH THREATS AND HAVE BEEN GASSED WHICH THIS TIME MADE MY ARMS AND LEGS ITCH UNTIL I WASHED THEM DOWN WITH WATER.  I AM AS CERTAIN AS I CAN BE THAT THIS GOES BACK TO ASSETS FOR MY BENEFIT GOING BACK TO WHEN I WAS A KID THAT WERE NEVER DISCLOSED TO ME.  I CAN’T HELP BUT BLAME MY FATHERS WIFE ELLA OLIVIERI FELCHER WHO I THINK IS THE BIGGEST PAIN IN THE ASS AND A WRETCHED OLD HAG.  I CALL HER A WICKED WITCH ALL THE TIME.  I HAVE HEARD A FEW PEOPLE CALL HER HOLLYWOODS FAVORITE HOMEWRECKER!  THIS GROUP OF MORONS THAT STALK AND CYBERSTALK THEIR SUBJECT IN ADDITION TO GANG STALKING AND GASLIGHTING PSYCHOLOGICAL ABUSE, I BELIEVE, USES SOME OF ITS SUBJECTS AS HUMAN GUINEA PIGS WITHOUT THEIR KNOWLEDGE OR APPROVAL.  I’M PRETTY SURE THAT THEY WERE DOING SOME SORT OF THRESHOLD STUDY ON ME FOR ABOUT A WEEK TO SEE WHAT MY REACTION WOULD BE TO VARIOUS NOISE TORTURE.  SOMEHOW THEY HAVE THE ABILITY TO CAUSE A VIBRATION OR RUMBLING UNDER YOUR FEET THAT I HAVE EXPERIENCED AT TIMES ON A SIDE WALK, DRIVEWAYS,  INSIDE OF A HOME OR STORE.  IT’S ABOUT A 4 SOMETIMES 5 ON A SCALE OF 1-10.  THIS CAUSES MY BLOOD PRESSURE TO SPIKE AND MY HEARTRATE TO INCREASE AS WELL.  I HAVE A FEELING THE PURPOSE FOF THAT IS TO TRY TO CAUSE SOMEONE TO HAVE A HEART ATTACK OR A STROKE.  THEY ALSO ENGAGE IN SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND SOMETIMES, LIKE LAST NIGHT, STARTED BOMBARDING ME WITH NOISE AND INFLAMMATORY SPOKEN CONTENT TO KEEP ME UP, I THINK, HOPING THAT IN KEEPING ME UP A FEW HOURS I WOULD GET UP LATER AND GET LESS DONE FOR THE DAY.  THEIR GOALS SEEM TO INCLUDE ECONOMIC TERRORISM AND ECONOMIC ESPIONAGE.  THEY ACTUALLY SAID THEY LIKE TO BANKRUPT THEIR SUBJECT SO THEY CAN’T AFFORD TO FIGHT BACK.  THE ARROGANCE IS INCREDIBLE.  THIS GROUP COULD TORTURE PEOPLE, TRY TO DEGRADE AND INSULT THEM FOR OVER AN HOUR AT A TIME AND YET THEY THINK THEY ARE ENTITLED TO RESPECT AND THAT THEIR SUBJECT SHOULD BE RESPECTFUL AND COOPERATIVE IN THEIR OWN DEMISE.  THIS GROUP HAS MADE A NUMBER OF THREATS AND I THINK THEIR REAL GOAL IS TO TAKE A PERSON DPOWN OVER TIME, CHARACTER ASSASINATION, PUSH THEIR SUBJECTS FRIENDS AWAY, DO WHATEVER THEY CAN TO CAUSE WORK TO BACK UP, KILL PETS, ECONOMIC TERRORISM ALL WITH THE HOPE AND INTENTION THAT OVER A PERIOD POF TIME 2-3-4 YEARS THEY CAN MAKE THEIR SUBJECT MISERABLE ENOUGH THAT THEY CAN GET THEM TO COMMITT SUICIDE.  AS I SEE IT, THIS GOES ALONG WITH SOMETHING SAID EARLY ON ABOUT 6 YEARS AGO.  THEY SAID THEY WANTED TO CAUSE MY DEATH IN A WAY THAT AVOIDS RED FLAGS.    I AM CERTAIN THEY HAVE BEEN TRYING TO KILL ME OR CAUSE MY DEATH THE LAST 3-4 DAYS BUT WANT TO DO IT IN A WAY THAT IT APPEARS NATURAL SUCH AS A HEART ATTACK OR A STROKE.

Sloop-of-War Ship’s Figurehead Lands at State Capitol

The figurehead of the USS Hartford is a carved figure that was once fitted at the prow of the ship. This wood figure with gold embellishments pointed onward as her ship fought one of the most decisive battles in Union-Confederate naval history, the Battle of Mobile Bay. It is now a relic that bears the name Hartford, the place that it has called home for 100-plus years. The figurehead’s significance began in 1859 during the christening of the ship. As local news coverage reported, “Miss Lizzie Stringham, daughter of the Commandant of the Yard, broke a bottle of Connecticut River water across her figure head; Miss Carrie Downs, a bottle of Hartford spring water and Lieut. George H. Preble, a bottle of salt water, and thus she was nobly christened the Hartford.”

The USS Hartford was a sloop-of-war launched on November 22, 1858, at the Boston Naval Yard. During her commission, she served in many prominent campaigns, most notably as the flagship of David G. Farragut. The Hartford was decommissioned on January 14, 1887, at Mare Island, California, for apprentice sea training use. On October 2, 1899, she was re-commissioned and then transferred to be used for training midshipmen until October of 1912 when she was transferred to Charleston for use as a station ship. In October of 1945, she was placed in the Norfolk Naval Yard where she began to deteriorate. Before she could be restored, she sank on November 20, 1956.

The figurehead was one of the relics saved from the USS Hartford. Detached and reconstructed by Commodore Philip Hichborn, Chief Constructor of the Navy, the figurehead was presented to the city of Hartford. Joseph R. Hawley, a United States senator, and former Hartford Mayor Mike B. Prestons are documented discussing the shipment and delivery of the figurehead to the city of Hartford:

It was detached during recent repairs and reconstructions, and the Commodore, into whose possession it came, has had it thoroughly cleaned, painted, and in part, gilded.

The outside dimensions of the box containing it are: length, six feet, nine and three-fourths inches; width, three feet, four inches; depth, three feet, five inches. The weight of the figure-head, or “billet-head” is three hundred and sixty-nine pounds; of the box, three hundred and fifty-nine pounds; total, seven hundred and twenty-eight pounds.

Upon the city’s acceptance of the gift, addressed to Commodore Hichborn, it will become and remain subject to the City’s order, to be addressed to the Commandment of the Navy Yard, Washington, DC. The charges for transportation will fall upon the City.

To commemorate Admiral David G. Farragut’s extraordinary career throughout the American Civil War, the city of Hartford designated October 19, 1897, as “Farragut Day.” The day remembered David Glasgow Farragut, commander of the USS Hartford, and also became the day officials placed the figurehead in the north corridor of the Connecticut State Capitol.

To enhance the legacy of the USS Hartford, H. M. Andrews, former president of the Hartford Board of Alderman, requested that Theodore Roosevelt provide a detailed history of the flagship. Committees formed to organize details and invite honored guests and military commands, such as Naval Battalion, C.N.G., 1st Section Brigade Signal Corps, C.N.G., 1st Regiment C.N.G., 1st Section Machine Gun Battery, Hartford, 1st Company Governor’s Foot Guard, 1st Company Governor’s Horse Guard, 2nd Company Governor’s Foot Guard, New Haven, 2nd Company Governor’s Horse Guard, New Haven, Putnam Phalanx, and Gideon Welles Naval Veteran Association No. 3 of Connecticut, New Haven.

Although the USS Hartford’s glory days are behind her, her legacy lives on. The relics she left behind (such as the figurehead in the Connecticut State Capitol) and the following poem, once captured in the Hartford Courant, help ensure her story is not forgotten:

Child of the forest and child of the sea. The winds and the billows have striven in vain, Triumphant thy march o’er the storm and the main. Now rest thee in peace thy voyaging o’er. The winds and the billows will know thee no more.

BREAKING AND ENTERING

I GOT A KICK OUT OF HEARING THAT I WAS NOW A ROBBER AND WAS SHOWN A PICTURE SUPPOSEDLY OF ME CLIMBING INTO THE WINDOW OF A CARRIAGE HOUSE LOOKING STRUCTURE WITH 2 APARTMENTS.  THAT WAS ME IN THE PICTURE THAT I SAW.  THAT STRUCTURE IS ON THE PROPERTY THAT I SOLD MARCH 2021 WHICH CONSISTED OF A HOUSE WITH 2 APARTMENTS.  SOMEHOW SOMEONE GOT INTO MY HOUSE AND STOLE THE KEY TO THE APARTMENT SO I HAD TO CLIMB IN THE WINDOW A FEW TIMES UNTIL I HAD THE LOCK CHANGED.
