hello ! do you have any thoughts about the new dragon age game and the info that's come out for it?
Some. Based on the limited footage I've been looking at (and for context, I haven't kept up with the promotion beyond the 20 minute snippet of gameplay footage they showed after the disastrous first trailer), it looks like it's trying to follow the legacy of Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age 2 in terms of gameplay structure. Mission-based, fairly linear, constructed around setpieces and combat encounters with relatively minimal exploration and puzzles.
Which isn't necessarily a bad thing - Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age 2 are the best games in each franchise - but I also get a sense that the combat gameplay has been streamlined down the point that it's functionally indistinguishable from any other standard 3D action hack-and-slash (somewhat in the mold of FF16), which feels very much like a play for mainstream triple-A broad audience appeal.
In the context that BioWare is pretty commonly considered to be on the EA chopping block should their next games flop, that feels like they didn't choose that combat style because it's what they really wanted, or what their core audience is interested in, or even because it's what's best for the game and its narrative and feeling. It feels like they chose it because they need John Gamer™, who buys 2-3 big triple-A game titles a year and who's never touched an RPG before, to spend some money on their game by convincing him that it's a cool fantasy hack-and-slash all about doing badass backflip jump slashes with a tone like Guardians of the Galaxy, and not a big, cheesy, lore-heavy fantasy soap opera / horny dating sim with a combat system bolted onto the side.
It feels like a creative decision pushed by someone in a suit jacket and graphic tee citing the need to be "data informed" about design decisions, and who, up until the moment Baldur's Gate 3 came out, was convinced that hard systems-driven RPGs were a niche product for a tiny audience that could never make real money because they surveyed 6000 Call of Duty players who said fantasy is for queers and losers.
Perfectly happy to be wrong about all of this, mind you, and since it'll be on GamePass, I will obviously be playing it, because even when Dragon Age is not very good, it is still Dragon Age and that's my goddamn trash right there.

This game shook me to my core when I initially played it on gamepass. I literally did not get past the first area before shutting my console down and buying it on steam, because I could tell the game was the shit, and wanted to get all I could out of it. So it's kinda odd to me that I'm only now getting to drawing fanart of it, but also, yeah I really just haven't done that much proper fanart recently. Should fix that!

Call me a hater but I do agree with the people criticising dti for gradually leaning more and more into pay to win, even if I dont agree with the way many have chosen to word and convey this critique
This has been a problem for a while. I’d say more or less since the Halloween update when they added a cape(an item I believe is instrumental to alot of themes/just generally a base item) but made it VIP exclusive. Items such as this, a parasol, ear modification, the angel wings, etc should NOT be locked behind a paywall when they are so core to alot of themes.
The double cash gamepass is fine, and the walk faster USED to be fine too until they made it lowkey mandatory with the change of the map. Be it intentionally or not, you can’t excuse making a map that takes longer to get around with it being “better organised” and “better for lag” when you charge for a gamepass to get around faster. Increase the base player(ie without walk faster) speed then! That way the walk faster is still an advantage for those who want it, but the gap between players who have it and those who dont isnt being widened unfairly. And no, increasing regular server round time did not fix this. Infact, that has been a long time coming! With more items and customisation options, this should’ve been something gradually increased over time, not “generously given” to us to appease a valid complaint about a system that’s becoming pay to win.
And my best hot take is that custom make-up really shouldn’t be entirely gamepass-exclusive 🤷 it’s like paying for the option to use patterns. Sure, you could put certain non-essential features OF custom make-up behind a paywall, just like they added some patterns you had to pay for. But putting such a core mechanic behind a paywall? Idk
It feels like alot of the people coddling the devs from any kind of criticism are the very same people who HAVE all the gamepasses and the ability to buy more. They forget what it’s really like to be a free to play player of the game and how wide the gap actually is. All they have is the code items, and even then, if you’re a new player who doesnt have a majority of the codes? You’re fucked. It’s discouraging as hell. And it SHOULD be a concern of the devs since it’s driving new players away.

Video Games I Played in February 2025

February might’ve been a new record for me at 18 games, without even counting perennials like Picross or games that bled over from January. I spent a lot of the month in the doldrums of nothing quite clicking for me but being reticent to start anything too substantial with the looming specter of Monster Hunter Wilds at the end of the month; a grim wall promising to devour an indefinite amount of my time and truncate any playthrough foolhardy enough to be ongoing when it started. As a result my diet was fitful and eclectic.
FlyKnight – I really enjoy dungeon crawlers, and I get the sense I need to try more games actively inspired by King’s Field. Lunacid and Northern Journey are on the shortlist but I still need to play the damn things. FlyKnight was a beautiful 4 hours with interesting combat with limb targeting reminiscent of The Surge, and environments that were detailed and evocative in spite (or perhaps because) of the low-poly aesthetic and myriad options for adding pixel crunch. First person melee remains an unsolved science. Lots of the bugs were cute, and I quite literally was fooled by a stickbug thinking it was a tree.
Waves 2: Notorious – I didn’t play much of Waves back in the early 2010s, but it was a flashy twin-stick shooter in the Geometry Wars vein that I enjoyed well enough. It came up in conversation with a friend and I discovered a sequel, and in the same breath discovered the solo dev had passed a few years prior before he could finish it. He made the games free before he died, but it was a strangely bittersweet sensation to have the most tenuous of parasocial connections severed in that way. I’m so used to a niche game I was interested in end up with no follow-up because the dev team was disbanded (Shoutouts to the devs of ZAU and Prince of Persia: Lost Crown). Something about this game reminded me that there’s worse ways for a story to end.
Skul: The Hero Slayer – I tried this a few years ago back when it was in early access and back when they were gleefully ripping off American IPs with the brazen confidence of a newgrounds flash game. Unfortunately 3 years of polish and QoL haven’t changed the core gameplay loop, merely made it far easier. As roguelikes go I do like how every powerup is a member of two sets, so your limited inventory becomes a neat puzzle of balancing item effects, set bonuses, and leaving space for potential future build evolutions. Everything else about the game is just kinda eh, though that may be my 100 hours of Dead Cells talking.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective – I played the PC remake on steam because I heard it was a faithful adaptation of the original, just with higher resolution art. This is someone’s favorite video game. I respect that person’s opinion. This is not my favorite video game. It’d be a fun point-and-click game with the Saturday morning cartoon dialogue and fun character work, but the puzzles are both fiddly and timing-based which is not something I’m down to clown with anymore. When I fuck up I’d like an inkling as to how. I at least stuck around long enough to meet Missile.
Bluejeweled – Fun little itch.io game riffing on Bejeweled 2 with several clever jokes. Short but well-constructed, and as someone that spent an uncomfortable amount of time in high school mindlessly playing Bejeweled on the family computer it was nice to go back.
Gato Roboto – I had played an hour or so of this previously on gamepass a few years ago, and decided to give it another go because it was on steam family sharing and I’m seriously at the bottom of the barrel vis a vis metroidvanias. Dropped it again. The conceit of the morph ball function being the “real” version of you is interesting but otherwise it’s intensely shallow with any cleverness in map design undermined by the lack of visual differentiation and the frustrating bullet hell combat. Any metroidvania needs to stand up to “is this more fun than a Super Metroid rando” and if it isn’t I end up doing that instead.
Macdos 95 – I downloaded this from Humble’s barely-remembered app and got a surprising amount into it before remembering I’d tried this before. I’m not sure who did the whole ‘fake PC with layers of puzzles in the vein of Windows 9x programs’ first between this, Kryptic, or whoever but they’re all roughly the same and all run into the problem that good puzzle design is hard. I quit before they made me do the tower of Hanoi again.
The Devil Within: Satgat – I caved and bought two vaguely interesting metroidvanias because they were in a bundle together. This one was moderately interesting, and oddly reminded me of F.I.S.T. with its over-involved combo strings and bizarre art direction with wildly varying levels of polish on its 3D models. I’m not sure why it had parries, dodges, and backsteps, and I’m not sure why landing one of any of them consumed meter to enter into one of three counterattacks unique to that defensive option. Very cluttered design, and the skill tree being so broken up with levels giving five different colors of skill points didn’t make it any easier to read. I maintain my deep disdain for metroidvanias that have locked chests and force you to get keys, though most keys being obtained from increasingly difficult boss rematches was certainly a novel choice. Like many metroidvanias I gave up at the final boss because he was an overtuned piece of shit with instant-kill attacks and I lost interest.
ReSetna – I lasted 15 minutes with this piece of garbage and that was 10 more minutes than it deserved. This has some of the stiffest and clumsiest movement of any video game I’ve played, and I played Grabbed By The Ghoulies on Xbox. Animations are intensely committal, combat is weightless against HP sponge enemies, the maps are cluttered with detail that makes rooms difficult to read, and I think the writing was translated by AI. I’m not going to refund because shit’s hard out there and it did have enough polish to make me interested, but goddamn.
Lumines Remastered – My aforementioned fondness for Bejeweled has undermined my ability to master other tile-based games, and this one is profoundly unkind to neophytes. The combined mechanisms of block pieces having their own gravity and the endless sweep of the bar across the screen like the reaper’s scythe lead to a cadence that I’ve never seen before and that I’m positively dogshit at navigating. Beautiful game. Not my speed.
Cryptmaster – I am both too good at blobbers and too good at word puzzles for this game. The central conceit is clever and the writing is pretty solid, but it has the same issue as the Loathing games where after the first 10 hours you wish there wasn’t any combat and you could focus on the interesting parts of the game. There are too many keywords for enemies that block or demand particular letters to be interesting, as frantically reading through the shortlist of each of your four party members’ 20+ attacks seeing where the “R”s are isn’t compelling. It doesn’t help the game’s combat is intensely easy and while the word puzzles are sometimes interesting there’s only a few types you’ll exhaust very quickly. There’s also some intensely basic quality-of-life features missing that necessitate detailed manual tracking of what letters have already been hinted for new keywords in order to make any progress whatsoever.
Vexx – After a week of several games not doing it for me, I popped the seal and decided to replay Vexx for the first time since 2014. What a good goddamn game. The art direction remains stellar, and dolphin ran the game upscaled with no issues whatsoever. Combat is still simple but visceral, the platforming is snappy and fluid, and above all else it’s just fun to be a little dipshit with knife hands fucking about. I really don’t know why more games didn’t steal the Mario 64 mold of a selection of dense levels with multiple key objectives, some of which modify the level slightly when selected as the current goal. Also, when I tried to get the soundtrack, my two options were purchasing a vinyl from the holding company squatting on the bones of Acclaim’s IPs or clicking on a google drive link in a fandom wiki to download a very large zip file off the internet.  I did both after tearing through the game in a single weekend.
Eternal Strands – What a bizarre game. All the characters look like caricatures imagined by someone who has a hateboner for D&D 5e and the dialogue reeks of therapyspeak. There is absolutely no art direction, with every asset being default fantasy slurry. You’ve got the BotW climbing, spells that copy Control’s concrete-hurling telekinesis and Prey’s glue gun, enemy climbing like Dragon’s Dogma with the weakpoint stabbing of Shadow of the Colossus, and item crafting for good measure. There’s so much shit in this game and the end result is nothing. We keep making these. Kena: Bridge of Spirits. Immortals of Aevuem. Atlas Fallen. AA doesn’t exist anymore so these games that would’ve been content to last for 8-16 hours 10 years ago have to be 20+ hour monstrosities with sidequests and kitchen sink design. All that being said, they made their version of Kass a girl and I want her to kill me.
10,000,000 – I could’ve sworn this was by the same people as Luck Be A Landlord. It is very much by the same people as You Must Build a Boat. This is a game you play for five minutes and understand the entire gameplay loop, and then play for five hours while forgetting that humans need to drink water. Once again my Bejeweled reps betrayed me, as this is a sliding Match-3 like Chuzzle. I played a lot of that too but it’s not how my brain works. Overall design is simple, clever, and while it’s grindy that’s kind of deliberate in a very up-front way.
Nine Sols – When I replay a game I tend to either do so immediately or wait a few years. Nine Sols is the first time in a while where it was both fresh in my memory but I still wanted another bite at the apple, especially having played Sekiro in the interim and therefore having gained a much deeper understanding of its intended rhythm. I felt like hot shit coming back and then the first boss killed me in a single combo. Once I got my groove back it was somewhat delirious having two of the bosses that I spent hours on die first try, but plenty of them still took a bit of elbow grease. The final boss remains maybe the best fight of any video game I have played, and she took me multiple hours of attempts. Less than half as long as the first time, but damn. One bittersweet part of the replay is that because I tore through the game so quickly, I spent less time in the pavilion and therefore missed some of the conversations with the various NPCs there as I didn’t give each story flag enough time to ruminate. It didn’t stop me from getting the true ending, but I still missed out on some scenes I’d wanted to see again. Call it an excuse for another replay in a few months.
Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence – I’ve played maybe a half-hour of this so far and have very little in the way of structured thoughts. When the game began, it gave me four statements and told me to choose which one was the most true: “I have never played Metal Gear Solid before!”, “I love Metal Gear Solid 1!”, “I love Metal Gear Solid 2!”, and “I love Metal Gear Solid 3!”. I do not know which, if any of those, apply to me. I may never know.
Fish Fear Me – Despite poking around in a handful of survivors games the past few years, I never played Snake Farm as it looked both byzantine and frustrating. This soft sequel is byzantine and frustrating. There is an intentionality and purity to its structure that I cannot deny, but this is for a very particular breed of sicko and I’m not sure I can match that level of freak. It’s quite odd to have the player in control of summoning the monsters, but because you need to kill to heal it behooves the player to augment fights against difficult fish with waves of chum that you can mulch through easily. The result is a deeply unique texture, if nothing else.
Monster Hunter Wilds – Despite dominating so much of my thoughts for the month, I’d deliberately avoided the beta and didn’t really feel the first pangs of excitement until I ran the benchmark. Seikrets are a natural evolution of raider ride and the palamutes, and storing a second weapon offers a lot of flexibility in the field that I appreciate. The game’s performance remains frustratingly abysmal given it looks about the same as World even with high-resolution textures, and the fact this game has been infected with the scourge of walk-and-talk segments speaks to the pervasiveness of the rot within the gaming industry as a whole. The game takes too damn long to get to the part where you’re hunting monsters to build cooler gear to fight bigger monsters, and that’s a serious problem. Overall it’s monster hunter. I have a greatsword and they have a health bar, and we smack those against each other until someone falls over.

Starting August 28, players who pre-order #CallOfDuty: #BlackOps6 or are #GamePass Ultimate or PC Game Pass members can download the Early Access Open Beta on #Xbox or PC.
The Beta will launch on August 30 and give players a preview of #BlackOps 6 with new 6v6 maps, Omnimovement, and updated weapons. Rewards earned in the Beta will carry over to the full game at launch and will be available on day one with Game Pass.
Other upcoming Game Pass titles include #AtlasFallen on August 22, #CoreKeeper on August 27, #StarTrucker on September 3, and three new additions to the Game Pass Core library on August 21.

What's crazy is that gamepass ultimate (which I assume is the sub the user in op's post has cause core has like 5 games lmfao) is roughly 24$ CAD every month for games that came out 5-10 years ago and Microsoft has been incrementally increasing the price at around a rate that is nearly annual. Not only that but the selection is incredibly bland and rarely rotates often they'll add the next edition of FIFA and some random indie shovel ware you've never heard of while removing games that people actually had a desire to play.
It's actually incredibly easy not to spend money on things like this if you're not stupid.
