Quote
Punishment by process is a favourite tactic of the Modi administration when it wants to intimidate or wear out those who dare to find fault with the prime minister or his party. In 2020, Amnesty International was forced to close its India operation after its bank accounts were frozen. Last year, Oxfam India and the Centre for Policy Research, a think tank in Delhi, suffered tax raids. Indian media outfits, journalists and activists who have offended suffer worse. Reprisals, whether carried out by the government or its enraged admirers, have included pulled advertising, detentions without trial and, for Gauri Lankesh, a journalist and critic of chauvinistic Hindutva ideology, assassination.

journalists are a relatively unique group because they wind up in danger depending on what they follow up on, not on their politics.
Gauri Lankesh—-all love and respect to her—was, if you read her work, fundamentally a liberal, with incredible integrity—-in her reporting and investigation. This was unacceptable. So it’s something to keep in mind

i hate it, i hate being here, i hate the way the supreme court could just dismiss the bombay high court that easily, within a day. what's worse is this: even if tomorrow the government changed, if we switched and became somewhere different - gn saibaba is not going to get out of jail. it's easier to keep him there, easier for stan swamy to die there, for umar khalid to spend the best years of his life locked up. even if tomorrow the bjp left, it will still be more convenient for the government to never think about these people - these disabled activists that scare them so much - and make sure the rest of us forget too. gauri lankesh was murdered, safoora zargar's mphil didn't come through, and umar khalid's activist friend regularly posts on facebook about her visits to him in desperate hopes to keep him alive in the public conscience.
i keep thinking: this time is it. the pot is boiling over. unemployment is at an all time high, government funds are simply disappearing for anything that isn't show. it's been one week since any rain, and parts of north delhi are still clogged with water because the drainage system seems to be collapsing. but everytime i think this, every time i think - fucking finally, some criticism - the pot is boiling over! they bring a bigger pot, add more problems, and you lose yourself in trying to think of how we will ever untangle the new mess created.
i don't know when the hope just ebbed away entirely. i used to post about gathering hope from literature and other people. i don't know - now i just feel lost, because no matter what we dig out about storytelling and the love we have for each other, this is just going to be a permanent fixture of the indian political scene. they're not going anywhere, and the most we can hope for is to keep the public university on life support, keep each other surviving as they hack away at each limb of democracy in the favour of progress.
currently the rupees value fell to Rs 80 to a dollar. it's said to fall further. inflation is at 7.8%. petrol prices continue to soar. fucking progress.

Those who knew Indian journalist Gauri Lankesh say she saw combating fake news as part of a larger battle against the fracturing of society. Her final editorial ended with a call to action:
“I want to salute all those who expose fake news. I wish there were more of them.”
Forbidden Stories, whose mission is to continue the work of threatened, imprisoned or assassinated journalists, has taken up that call. Bringing together over 100 journalists from 30 media organizations, the French nonprofit created the “Story Killers” project to investigate the global disinformation-for-hire industry.
Journalists from OCCRP joined the efforts in Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America to uncover the growing, unregulated market — ranging from small-time fake news peddlers to multinational conglomerates that sell disinformation campaigns aimed at subverting democracy.
