General Grant National Memorial in New York City, #NewYork, is the largest #mausoleum in North America and holds the remains of Union General and 18th President of the United States, Ulysses S. Grant, and his wife, Julia. Grant passed away July 23, 1885 from cancer at the age of 63 in Wilton, #NewYork. The mausoleum was designed by architect John Duncan and took twelve years to build. This is the original location of General Grant's temporary tomb in Riverside Park in Upper Manhattan, New York City. Despite being temporary, Grant's body was in this tomb for twelve years (1885 - 1897) while funds were raised and construction was completed for the mausoleum. Today, the location of the original location of the tomb is outlined by a cast iron fence. Within the fenced area is a Ginkgo Tree sent by Li Hung Chang, a Chinese statesman and diplomat, and planted by Yang Yu. There is also a tablet in English and Chinese within the fence, dated May 1897. #ny #nyhistory #SpreadTheHistory #historygirl #FindYourPark #nps #nps102 #jerseycollective #exploreny #nationalparks #nationalparkservice #goparks #americanhistory #nationalparkgeek #travelblog #travelblogger #explore #blog #blogger #generalgrant #grantstomb #generalgrantnationalmemorial #nationalmemorial #iloveny #civilwar #smallparksaturday (at General Grant National Memorial) https://www.instagram.com/p/ByRJqNSn1wx/?igshid=1c6ph21d9nqzm

Today I visited two @NationalParkService sites in Upper #Manhattan: General Grant National Memorial and Hamilton Grange National Memorial. Grant, and his wife, Julia. Grant passed away July 23, 1885 from cancer at the age of 63 in Wilton, #NewYork. The mausoleum was designed by architect John Duncan and took twelve years to build.
