The last laugh 

Marcelle Hanselaar’s etching, part of a series made in 2022, presents a scene from Genesis 38:  Judah, son of the Israelite patriarch Jacob, sees a veiled woman by the roadside and assumes she’s a prostitute. “Come,” he says, “let me come in to you.” For payment he promises her a goat. The veiled woman accepts – on condition that she can hold on to his signet, cord, and staff as a guarantee of that goat. When Judah later tries to send the payment, the locals deny the existence of any prostitutes. Months later, rumor reaches Judah that his daughter-in-law Tamar, a childless widow, is pregnant as a result of whoredom. He condemns her to be burned, but Tamar is a few moves ahead in her chess game. She returns the signet and the cord and the staff with a message: “It was the owner of these who made me pregnant.”

Under the tradition of levirate marriage, Tamar had a right to bear children with Judah’s youngest son (brother of her first two husbands, both slain by God) which Judah had denied her. When Judah realizes that Tamar has used him to get pregnant, he basically accepts that she was just taking what was legally hers.

Lesson 038: More Righteous?

Genesis 38:26 - So Judah acknowledged them and said, “She has been more righteous than I, because I did not give her to Shelah my son.” And he never knew her again. 

Genesis chapter 38 tells a rather sordid story about sexual sins.  Judah and Tamar both committed sins in this story, yet Judah called her more righteous than him.  Why did he say that?

Let’s read together Genesis 38:1-11; Deuteronomy 25:5-10; and Numbers 36:7.

In the Old Testament, there was a custom known as levirate marriage.  If a man died childless, it was the duty of an unmarried brother to marry the widow.  The first child they had together would be the legal descendant of the dead man.  The purpose of this custom was to protect family lines and inheritances.

Er married Tamar, but Er died without an heir.  It was Er’s brother Onan’s duty to marry Tamar and have a child who would be considered Er’s legal heir.  Onan took advantage of the situation to have sexual relations with Tamar, but he did not want to provide an heir for Er.  The Lord killed Onan for his disobedience.  Judah promised Tamar she would marry his next son Shelah, but he reneged on his promise.

Let’s read together Genesis 38:12-25; Leviticus 20:14; Leviticus 21:9; Deuteronomy 22:20-22; and John 8:41.

The penalty for adultery in Old Testament times was stoning for both the man and woman.  Burning was the penalty for extreme cases.    Judah in his anger demanded Tamar should be burnt to death because he thought she committed harlotry.  However, Tamar gave proof that Judah was the one who got her pregnant.  Judah had to come clean about lying to Tamar and committing sexual sin.  

When Judah said Tamar was more righteous than him, Judah acknowledged his hypocrisy.  They both sinned, but he was the worse sinner.  Judah never had sex with Tamar again after this admission.

Let’s read together Matthew 7:1-2 and Luke 6:41-42.

May we be careful not to judge others and act as hypocrites.

I bought Aziraphale's Bible so you don't have to.

Am I insane? Yes. Was it worth it? Maybe. In most* of both season 1 and season 2 of GO, there's a very specific Bible on a bookstand next to Aziraphale's desk. It's a vintage illustrated plate book by Harold Copping, known as the Harold Copping Bible, published by the religious tract society in London in 1910. It features some of the most well known Old Testament stories, summarized and annotated by the Bishop of Durham at the time, and illustrated by Copping, who was freshly returned from a sojourn in the middle east. Ironically, It was meant as a lay-person's version of a comic book, short, exciting by use of exotic illustrations, and easy to read.

S2E2 22:29, S2E2 40:05 Obviously, the plate illustrations and text look different here than in the real bible, because they were created for the show. But there are a few more particularities here. For one, this layout with the thin grid around the text, as well as the paragraph symbol next to the first title, indicate that this would have been a printer's proof copy, not a finished book. It shows you the layout grid and can be annotated for changes. Second, there seems to be a war going on between fonts. Where the "chapter" of Job begins, we get a font and a style similar to the original bible, which gets rudely interrupted by a dropped capital (from the real book) and a Gothic-style font/verse numbers like in the original King James version of the printed Bible.
