picture this. you're a university student in desperate need of a summer job in biology. everyone in your program started their positions a month ago. you've sent out, no word of a lie, over 130 job applications, but since you are roughly 18 and your main job experience is in textiles and history your resume is not exactly thrilling to most researchers. it is getting a little tiny bit scary

and then. you get an interview. very little detail other than the standard spiel about working well in a team and having good time management skills but you actually have a call back!!

the person interviewing you describes the role a bit and you nod along enthusiastically. data management? sure! you've used excel and even found the files again later. you could soooooo manage some data

and then. he asks if you've ever used GPS. you think aha! I was prepared for this! your roommate (who was among those starting their contract a month ago and had just returned from the arctic) had just offered to walk you through the equipment they used so you can get a better idea of how the gear works. you answer confidently that yes, you have used GPS technology before, figuring that you would just ask your roommate to show you their gear sooner rather than later!

your interviewer gives you a strange look but continues the interview.

he also gives you the job.

it's about 2 days into the job when you realize that he did not say GPS. you are now a GIS technician. not Global Positioning System. Geographic Information Systems. it's math about maps.

crucially, you are bad at both of these things, and are now responsible for processing 20 years of satellite imagery.

luckily your supervisor is also going to the arctic (unrelated to the roommate. just a lot to do in the arctic) and will have no contact with you except the world's shittiest satellite text messages every 2 days. which means he has no idea that you will spend the next week and a half frantically teaching yourself how to do GIS using every free website this green earth has ever produced.

except. by the end of the contract. you actually solved a key problem in the analysis. you processed the data in what was probably the least efficient way possible but it all got processed. your supervisor provides you glowing references as a skilled GIS professional, which led you to every other position you've had since then and shaped your entire career trajectory.

now finally, picture this. it's years later, with the skills you hastily taught yourself, partially laid up in your pajamas at your then-girlfriend's house, having brought you to many enjoyable and fulfilling roles in your field. you still never actually learned what a geodatabase is.
