Day 300 — The Cast

Scientists determined that the sustainable fish catch — the amount of fish that can be caught without decimating populations — could drop by as much as a quarter by the end of the century if greenhouse gas emissions continue on their current trajectory.

The oceans have absorbed about 90 percent of the excess heat and about a quarter of the carbon dioxide from fossil fuel burning and other human activities, leading to rising ocean temperatures, increasing acidification and lower oxygen levels that will have an impact on sea life. Shellfish won't be able to develop shells properly; harmful algae blooms will proliferate, choking off coastal fisheries; and populations of fish will continue moving to cooler waters, leaving behind the fishing communities and economies that have depended on them for centuries.

"The current science suggests that as the ocean warms and loses oxygen, the body size of animals will be reduced, the distribution of fish will change and the surface production of phytoplankton is going to decline," said Lisa Levin, a professor at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and a lead author of the fisheries chapter. "When there's less plankton at the base of the food web, there's going to be less fish."

Those of us who don’t grow our own food may lose sight of how much risk is involved in agriculture. But the recent floods in the Midwest are just the latest reminder that farming can be a precarious occupation in times of climate change, with its unpredictable and sometimes downright wild weather.

Too little water or too much, days too hot or too cold, unexpected shifts in the timing of all these things: any such disruption can put farmers in trouble. As the headline of a worthwhile overview story in The Guardian puts it, “As Climate Change Bites in America’s Midwest, Farmers are Desperate to Ring the Alarm.”

But what does it mean for farmers when the most powerful agricultural organization in the country, the American Farm Bureau Federation, isn’t so sure human-caused climate change is real and disapproves of nearly all proposed means of lessening its impacts? And why might such an organization hold those views?

According to the climate change page on the Farm Bureau website and its factsheet, the group approves of biofuels and “market-based solutions,” but not of carbon taxes, cap-and-trade, or emissions reporting; regulation by the EPA or “any other legislative vehicle”; anything that might “make America less competitive”; and any action by the U.S. that isn’t matched or exceeded by “other countries.”

james daniel cunningham ;; fc grant gustin // eighteen, resident animal lover he works at the pet shelter and is basically newt scamander he relates to animals more than he does to human beings. he’s really kind, loyal and hard working he’s a hufflepuff like 100%, will hit you with random animal and most importantly dog facts. really passionate about helping the earth’s environment so he’s a vegan and will keep you from eating a chicken nugget. mom’s the town doctor / surgeon she’s a heart surgeon  half brother to uriah, his dad is a messy ass deal and he doesn’t know him doesn’t want to. wren is his cousin/ big brother and he loves him to bits. 

friends, someone he tutors, but like not really he mostly does their homework for them because well he doesn’t have the heart to speak up. a bully of sorts, anyone who wants to shove his head in a toilet from time to time DO IT. 

sebastian rodrigo maradona ;; fc theo james // twenty eight, ex soccer superstar he was injured used to play soccer professionally. spanish, he’s now the high school soccer coach. too serious for his own good hardly smiles and he’s really passionate about the sport, and he loves his girls to death like he’s protective over the girls on the team.

friends, best friends, hook ups, a girlfriend maybe? future romance idk, just someone who makes him not be so serious all the time lmao. 

riley daphne moore ;; fc emma watson // twenty four, ace of cakes runner up and local town superstar her bakery kind of exploded after she was on the show and she’s had multiple offers to make it a franchise but she hasn’t accepted any of them yet. high key thinks that her cupcakes and cakes are the solution to all of the world’s problems and she will feed anyone who lets her and even if they don’t lmao. big mama bear instincts, protective of the people she cares for and will probably go over board with such protection and she’s really not flexible, doesn’t take no for an answer about ANYTHING at all, stubborn and prone to ranting  loves coffee and is a sarcastic twit a lot of the time.

This summer has been a record-setter for floods in the Southern US, but out West, it’s also been an intense year for wildfires.

More than 80 wildfires are burning across swaths of land in Montana, California, and even states in the Pacific Northwest that tend to be rainy, like Oregon and Washington. [Washington Post / John Hopewell]

All of this fire and smoke is being fueled by record-setting heat; California just had its hottest summer ever, and temperatures have also been scorching in cities like Portland and Seattle. [Inside Climate News / Georgina Gustin]

Right now, there’s a huge cloud of smoke hanging over Washington that nearly covers the entire state. People in Seattle and surrounding areas have been getting ash falling on their cars; the smoke is supposed to clear up late this week, but some longtime Seattle residents told reporters they can’t remember this much smoke being in the city. All of this smoke carries potentially dangerous health risks as people inhale tiny smoke particles. It can also worsen pollution and smog in cities. [Vox / Brian Resnick]
