Ghostkeeper (1981)
A move with a nice atmosphere and eerie secluded location, but not much else. There is a story, and in general it seems like it's going somewhere. Like, information is being given which feels like it is building up to something, but then it just doesn't, ending with a weak twist that feels like they ran out of money to film the real ending—incidentally, that is what the legends say is what happened.

“Makichuk and MacLeod’s screenplay revolved around three young and reckless snowmobilers (played by Riva Spier, Sheri McFadden and future Alberta Film Commissioner Murray Ord) who find themselves stranded at a seemingly abandoned lodge in the wilderness during a blizzard.”

Happy New Year!
Happy New Year to all the friends of the Mind of Smoothie!
For the past couple of years I released an episode of the Mind of Smoothie podcast on New Year's day. Unfortunately there is no episode today. But that doesn't mean that an episode isn't on it's way.
Coming this Thursday a new episode will be released. On the next episode of the podcast we will be looking at the 1981 film Ghostkeeper!
Tumblr media
I initially considered this film for last year's "New Year" selection but went with Bloody New Year instead. I will say that after re-watching this film again and watching a few other reviews about the film, I think I gained a deeper appreciation for it. I will say that it might not be for everyone, but I definitely think it is worth checking out at least one time.
I hope this little preview whet your appetite for the upcoming podcast. That's all your getting for now. I'll link the trailer below.

New Year's Creeps & Auld Lang Thrills
New Year’s Creeps & Auld Lang Thrills
It’s the end of another year. Now, we must stress over a new one. At least we can soothe the New Year’s anxieties with horror, laughs, and weird thrills, too. This list has titles directly related to New Year’s Eve and the holidays, whereas other titles are more loosely connected. Either way, whether horror, comedy, or thriller, the titles on this list provide a very fun way to say goodbye to…

I REALLY don’t love supporting them over indie stores, but Amazon and B&N preorders make the biggest difference in a book’s overall success. Those numbers can literally make or break a debut graphic novel.
THE GHOSTKEEPER is a story about letting go of the weight of others’ burdens, being kind to yourself, and moving on.
I don’t want to sound like I’m begging. It’s just so hard for new books to get reach, without intervention from the algo gods.
And this book contains my whole heart.
I really hope you’ll grab a copy. 🤍🤍

I recently checked out The Ghostkeeper by Johanna Taylor. This was a really cool story.
Johanna did the story and the artwork in this book, and they paired very well together. This YA novel is perfect for anyone into ghost stories.
The Ghostkeeper follows the story of Dorian Leith who can see and talk to ghosts. He helps them try to move on to the afterlife by listening to and working with them on their problems. Then, the key to death’s door goes missing and all the ghosts are trapped.
How does Leith navigate being able to talk to ghosts, his best friend being his ghost grandma, and the cute boy at the bookshop without being completely ostracized by the village? Not too well!
Whenever I’m reading a book, I always think about if it could also work as a movie or a show. The Ghostkeeper would definitely work as an animated movie. It would be tremendous. The scenes with the ghosts could be colorful, beautiful, and frightening all at the same time.
This book is a lot of fun, and you should check it out.
Thank you Netgalley and Penguin Group Dutton for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

”is there any story behind that mask or is it just a weird, messed-up fashion statement?” The question’s been plaguing his mind for weeks now. “And for other pressing matters, how do you not trip in your dress? Seems kind of… impractical.”
Tumblr media
Ghostface doesn’t usually talk during trials. He saves the socializing when he’s not on the job. It’d be distracting. Humanizing. That sort of thing. There’s something pleasantly eerie about something so obviously human-shaped being so deathly quiet. Helps get in the mood.
Still, this trial is as good as over, and he's not too stuck-up to indulge in a little small talk every now and then. He slowly turns to Leon, opting to silently watch him dangle on the hook for a bit. Let him sweat. "Well," he says at length, "I think that says a lot more about your sense of fashion than it does about mine." (He trips a lot, actually, but the robes are iconic! Not that this nitwit would understand, with his police uniform. Pah. Nice outfit loser, did your RPD pick that out for you?)
The sound of a gate being powered rings through distant hallways and Ghostface tuts. "Sounds like they're leaving without you, officer Kennedy. Can't have that, can we?" He turns on his heel and stalks off, giving Leon an excellent view of his robes dramatically fluttering behind him.
     Take that, loser.
