I wanna take a sec to talk about Lucky Penny.
If you haven’t been lucky enough to have heard of Lucky Penny before now: it is my favorite graphic novel. It has been since junior year of High-school. I am now a senior in my final semester in college (and accounting for my Covid style gap year) Lucky Penny has been my #1 fave graphic novel for six years and counting.
It’s funny, it’s raunchy, the characters feel real, the story is well paced and takes some very fun and unexpected twists! However, the story and art aren’t the only reason I love Lucky Penny. I originally found Yuko Ota and Ananth Hirsh via their autobiographical book of daily life comics Johnny Wander: Our Cats Are More Famous Than Us, which I had picked up from the local library and was absolutely thrilled to find out was a webcomic that at the time was still actively updating. On their website (linked here!) you can actually read Lucky Penny and their Autobiographical comics completely for free as well as their current (still updating) work, Barbarous.
For me Lucky Penny acts as a bridge and a love letter to middle school me, who avidly read webcomics on solo hosting sights, many of which have been lost to time or have simply stopped updating. Self published webcomics outside of companies like Tapas (formerly Tapastic) and LINE Webtoon have ensured that solo host websites are far and few in between and routinely get looked over. Despite existing in the face of these big companies Johnny Wander lives on.
Lucky Penny is like warm soup. It’s comforting and every read feels different depending on where I am emotionally and just in my life in general. You can find Lucky Penny free to read on Johnny Wander here and even grab a physical copy for yourself here if you prefer paper. Updates on Yuko Ota and Ananth Hirsh’s current work and activities can be found on their respective tumblrs @aidosaur and @ananthhirsh
If you choose to read Lucky Penny I hope you love it. I’m sure you will. :)

describing teen superhero teams badly:
young avengers: these bitches gay, good for them
west coast avengers (2018): more queer teens and their tired baby sitter (who is also queer)
champions: we are poc + scott, but we're rolling with scott because scotts rolling with us

I REALLY don’t love supporting them over indie stores, but Amazon and B&N preorders make the biggest difference in a book’s overall success. Those numbers can literally make or break a debut graphic novel.
THE GHOSTKEEPER is a story about letting go of the weight of others’ burdens, being kind to yourself, and moving on.
I don’t want to sound like I’m begging. It’s just so hard for new books to get reach, without intervention from the algo gods.
And this book contains my whole heart.
I really hope you’ll grab a copy. 🤍🤍

B&N: HERE

This is a background color test (using CMYK halftones) for with one of locations in my comic.
Atomic Video is a location in the town of Cherry Creek from my new YA cosmic horror comic set in 1990's New England. "Cherry Creek Paranormal Club" (formerly Peach Creek Paranormal) follows Paranormal Club Members Louise, Jean, Alejandro, Christine, and Sam as they uncover the dark secrets bubbling up to the surface and threatening to destroy their town, all while navigating their last year of middle school.
Atomic Video is the video store where Alejandro's horror-buff older brother, Francisco, works, and it becomes a frequent meeting spot for the Club outside of school. Francisco, in his infinite movie-trope related wisdom, sometimes acts as an esoteric guide to the weird world of movie monsters and high-concept sci-fi shenanigans that the Club may face on their quest for the truth. He also lets them hang out and play on the arcade cabinets. Don't ask about his break-up with the goth bookseller at Black Cherry Books across the street; it's still pretty fresh.

Meet Misako Sato!
Misako is one of the main characters of the series “The School for Extraterrestrial Girls” written by @jeremywhitley and illustrated by @jamienoguchi
Misako grew up as a foster kid in Washington  D.C. where she spent years getting in trouble and getting passed from one foster home to another. She learned how to take care of herself early and tries to look out for others, but doesn’t trust easily and almost never forgive.
Misako grew up thinking she was a normal boring kid, but sure she was supposed to be something special. One day a fight with her foster father caused her to lose her medical alert bracelet, which was secretly enchanted to hider her true form.
Misako is a faerie, not just from a different planet but from a completely different dimension. In her faerie form she has wings, bluish skin, pointy ears - the works. She’s also capable of doing magic, though she doesn’t have a spellbook to teach her and, as she’ll discover, her people and her dimension were destroyed years before she knew what she was. She very well might be the last of her kind. And if that wasn’t hard enough, her new friend Tara is one of the race of aliens who destroyed Misako’s home.
Find out more in “The School For Extraterrestrial Girls Book 1: Girl on Fire” which you can buy right now! Find it on amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/School-Extraterrestrial-Girls-Girl-Fire/dp/1545804923 or order it from your local comic book store!
