Now comes news from Seattle that Laotian Hmong refugees have been growing opium poppies in their vegetable gardens. Someone asked the police to identify the bright red flowers. Seattle police found more than 4000 Papaver somniferum.

Vietnam remains with us, in odd and unpredicted ways.

Avengers Annual #10 (1981)

This is my favorite single comic book.

Coming on the heels of the egregious Avengers #200 (which I won’t get into here), Annual #10 is Chris Claremont’s course correction, but rather than some lazy retcon or simply ignoring it, Claremont writes through it the hard way—by confronting it. This issue has everything, which explains the cover (good idea, not-so-great execution): The X-Men, The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, Spider-Woman, and the mystery woman? Carol Danvers.

But it’s the notable firsts that really make an impression. The first appearance of Rogue and how she got her powers, the first meeting of my favorite friendship in comics, Jessica Drew and Carol Danvers, and the first time The Avengers really get what they deserve. The betrayal referred to in the title is theirs, and the friend they betrayed is Carol.

It’s not a perfect issue by any means. There are some minor problems: the aforementioned cover execution, the decision to have the emotional crux of the issue poolside while in bathing suits (?), and Michael Golden’s art can be a bit hit-or-miss. However, when it matters, Golden really comes through: Jessica’s dramatic rescue of Carol off the Golden Gate Bridge, the climax of the fight between the Brotherhood and the Avengers culminates in a gorgeous full-page splash that has a fantastic visualization of the Scarlet Witch’s hex powers, and finally a powerful scene with an emotionally crushed and justifiably angry Carol Danvers.

The issue’s third act is the emotional gut punch, full of small moments both tender and devastating: Jessica reaching out to Carol, someone she barely knows, and the beginning of a lasting bond; The Avengers’ stunned collective shame; and finally Wanda’s pained realization of the depth of the betrayal in the aftermath of Carol’s revelations.

I was very young when I first read this issue, but over the years I have turned to it again and again. Sometimes for fun, but sometimes to be reminded of all the things it helped teach me—about respecting both characters and people, about friendship, about the false distinction between high and low art—all lessons for which I remain grateful.

And all it cost me was seventy-five cents.

On Sunday February 8, 1981 police were summoned to Golden Gate Park after a headless body was discovered wrapped in a sleeping bag. Description

As the sun begins to set over Luxor, the Temple of Luxor displays its majesty and splendor. This historic temple, which honors the Theban Triad of Amun, Mut, and Khonsu, is a reminder of the spiritual and cultural legacy that Ancient Egypt has left behind.

A large procession is anticipated because to the avenue of sphinxes that runs up to the temple's entrance. The temple comes to life as one visualizes the ancient Egyptians traversing this hallowed road throughout religious rites and celebrations (Elfadaly, Abdelaziz, et al, 2017). Priests, royalty, and commoners were all present at these rites, which brought the community together in adoration and celebration.

The exquisite carvings and imposing statues discovered inside the Temple of Luxor demonstrate the craftsmanship of ancient Egyptian artisans (El-Razik, Mahmud Abd (1975). This temple invites visitors to engage with a civilisation that once flourished by serving as a monument to the artistic accomplishments and religious significance of Ancient Egypt.

The Federalist Bourbon Barrel Aged Cabernet Sauvignon is a red wine made from grapes sourced from the Lodi AVA of California. It is aged for 6 months in Bourbon barrels. The Federalist Cabernet Sauvignon intertwines bold fruit with rich, toasted vanilla and spice notes with a smoky caramel finish.

The Federalist was established in 1981 by three friends: John Grace, Mark Rafanelli and Philip Staley who joined forces and purchased the site that was to become the Alderbrook Winery   winery in Healdsburg, California (since closed). Eventually, in 2000, Terlato Wines purchased a majority share. Terlato invested in both vineyard sources and winery to provide the winemaking team the best grapes and equipment available.  This has helped position the winery to produce single vineyard and estate wines with a focus on Zinfandel. The vineyards are located in Sonoma County, California, approximately 80 miles north of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge. Zinfandel is the primary focus of the vineyards with 65% of its production dedicated to this varietal.

The grapes for the The Federalist Bourbon Barrel Aged Cabernet Sauvignon are mainly Cabernet Sauvignon with a little Carignan and Merlot. Different blocks were fermented separately to preserve ideal characteristics of each. Each block spends an average of 12 days on the skins. Aged 7 months in American oak and for a second 6 months in charred ex-Bourbon barrels.

Story: A prodigal son comes finally home after a distressed call from his mother. However, eight years have changed a boy into a man and father. Even his own father is not happy to see him, not letting go of the past when the son walked out from San Francisco to go to New York. Thomas J. uses anyone to get his son committed. After some trouble with his wife who left him, he comes back and tries his best to please everyone. The only help he has is his old love Candy who is about to marry, and a young lady named Claire. Finding a good story about natural fuel and Sager's involvement here, the family disput grows and Sager does everything to get Natalie in his core but she remains loyal to her brother. At the last board meeting, father and son are ready to disput when the mother Jane uses her power to get all to her son. Now the father walks out.

Midas follows Dionysus's instructions, and gold flows from his hands into the sand when he touches the waters of the Pactolus. And this is why the Pactolus river has a high content of gold.

Tom Tanaka goes to San Francisco where corrupt politicians are warring with Chinese organized crime. Tom gets captured and escapes like three times and ends the story raiding a cathouse to rescue a young woman.

So far each of the installments has had a different author, but this one had a greater departure in tone, almost a Joseph Rosenberger feel with every punch or kick given a Japanese name as he mows down his opponents.

There's a thread of Tom fighting against intolerance in the form of racist white politicians and him softening his negative Japanese attitude towards the Chinese, and then proceeds to spit on Koreans, so no real good guys in this one.

Felt more Men's Adventure than Western, and lost some of the chanbara feel of the first books.
