The biggest gripe I have with research is that most papers are hidden over a paywall, but we are supposed to know what work has been done and not repeat it (obv). Except, how tf am I do something new if I don't even have any means of knowing what others have done? I know there are a lot of ways to get the papers pirated but man I just want to legally be able to read the papers which are out, you know?
If there is someone who's been in research for a longer time, if you know the reason for all these paywalls or a way around this issue, please enlighten us. This is my official plea for help.

A Fantastic Resource For Finding Information
Good morning everyone! I just wanted to pop in and inform everyone about a fantastic resource anyone can use to find information about nearly any topic that the brain can even think of. I use it constantly for my job as a researcher and it helps me out A LOT. This resource can be used for a job, writing essays, or even just satisfying a person's curiosity on a certain topic they want to learn about!
Google Scholar is an online resource that is free for anyone to use! It was released on November 20th, 2004, and is absolutely FILLED with peer-reviewed online academic journals and books, conference papers, theses and dissertations, preprints, abstracts, technical reports, and other scholarly literature, including court opinions and patents. Whatever you decide to search up, under each link/article/book/etc. will be options to save, cite (For when writing your own essay or article), tell you how many others have citied that specific article, and give you an option to view related articles and any other versions of that exact article. On the left side of the resource, you can specify what exact thing you are looking for by setting a specific range of when the article was posted, if you want to sort the results by relevance or date, what type of article you are looking for, and if you want the article to include patent/citations or not. Underneath that, you can even make an alert for a certain topic so that you will be notified when a new article is posted about that topic.
"But, Jerome, where do I go to find this amazing resource?" I'm glad you asked! You just need to search up, "Google Scholar" into your search bar and it should be the first link to pop up. I have also included a link to it at the bottom of this post, right before the tags. Happy researching!

Okay so I tested something.
The week before my period I am so lethargic I can barely do anything. I looked it up and it was difficult to find any info on that but it's apparently related to overall inflammation due to the production of prostaglandins in the luteal phase.
So I took an ibuprofen.
And I'm feeling like. 60% better.
Next steps will be to 1. replicate results 2. if results are replicated find better ways to lower my prostaglandins levels during my luteal phase than by taking ibuprofen on an already irritated stomach

If we actually do manage to publish this article it will, as far as I know, be the first article actually fully dedicated to this topic which is insane because it's such a basic concept you'd just think someone would've already written about it but no?

Not bad...
Tumblr media
Almost 80 citations of my research articles in the last year... I would say it’s not bad. It eases a bit my feeling of “I don’t know what I am doing here!” that I sometimes have.

i want to do a study on [thing] but i can't think of a way to do an experiment without it being unethical so it'd have to be more of a like, survey/interview based thing, and i would need to do it through like. my school probably. and work with people and such. i have a fairly biased view of [thing] and its causes/effects/what it actually is so i'd need other people to work with who can keep me from getting all confirmationbiascore. i could do a review of the literature (twitter.com) but that would take ages too although i guess it would be important for a history of [thing]. (though it would also be impossible considering how many ppl r probably now priv/deleted.. if i reached out to the r/eylo community* i could probably find out how to get s script to track new tweets though)(*referencing that withcindy video abt that one insane racist author who was exposed by r/eylos who tracked every tweet mentioning their ship for 7 years) but i find it SO INTERESTING on a psychological/social(?) level

this morning I'm thinking about the amount of academic essays, papers, thesis done on modern entertainment media written by students that is kept hidden away unpublished or behind paywalled journals that people outside of that specific academic discipline would never think to check, meanwhile the amount of high quality long form meta writing in fandom continues to diminish when long form text based social media platforms such as livejournal/tumblr/reddit/twitter somehow go through their periods of decline and AO3 continues to be overlooked as a place to read and publish meta content
no coincidence that media literacy and fandom as a whole was better and less reactionary when we had more long form written content floating around
