PS Oscar W
Built in Echuca in 1908, for Oscar "Charlie" Wallin, who named the paddle streamer after his son Oscar William Wallin, who is reported to have died in WW1 or in the boer war. the PS Oscar W carried freight on the Murray–Darling River system until the PS Oscar W was taken over by the shipping firm Permewan, wright and co, as a wool carrier. in 1919 the Murray shipping company was formed because of the diminishing river trade. Permewan, wright and co was merged into the Murray shipping company and the PS Oscar W.
Tumblr media
The PS Oscar W was sold in 1942 to George Ritchie of Goolwa to be used as a tourist vessel but wartime restrictions proved too difficult to justify a refit of the PS Oscar W. a year later the PS Oscar W was sold again to the government of south Australia highways department to service ferries along the river and the PS Oscar W was converted to an oil burning streamer in 1945. the PS Oscar W was sold to a Paddy Hogg in 1960.
The PS Oscar W was moved to Mildura in 1960 and was used as a tourist vessel. famously in 1962 the PS Oscar W towed the PS Gem for 8 months to the PS Gem to her current resting place, the Swan Hill Pioneer Settlement. the PS Oscar W was sold to Allan Moritz, who started to restore the PS Oscar W. unfortunately Allan Moritz passed away before the project's completion and as a result to the PS Oscar W was sold to the South Australia Tourist Commission in 1985. The Oscar W was returned to the Murray River and was steamed back to Goolwa, NSW arriving on the 31st of March 1988.

Cockles are small clams with smooth, fairly white shells with pretty pink and purple insides. They were a big part of my childhood, going down to Goolwa Beach to go cockling! You stand in the wet sand right where the waves are coming up to, wiggle around so your feet sink into the sand until they hit something solid, which is the cockles! Schloop your feet out of the sand, dig in with a hand and pull 'em out, then chuck 'em into the bucket and take them back to Nanna and Grandpa's for Grandpa to steam up ;9 My brother and I were never patient enough to get enough to make a meal of them, but they're tasty little morsels.
Cockles have informed a large part of Tsaythi 'cuisine,' in that it's basically South Australian beaches, but if the beach just kept going to become desert. A lot of edible South Australian plants are found on the beach, and I wish I'd known about it all when I was a kid because omfg imagine throwing all that into the pot with the cockles. It'd be so good.
Anyway. In Tsayth they live all through The Shallows. They're not farmed because they're so easily foraged and so plentiful, just stand there, wiggle around and pick 'em up!

From home to Ryelands Farm Stay and Retreat in SA.
Things have not been the same since we went to Melbourne to pick up the Weird Thing.
Tumblr media
I didn’t pay much attention until, after we arrived home and Helga started loading the Weird Thing with loads of stuff, including my front door dog mat.
All focus was on the Weird Thing sitting outside our verandah.
“This is the test run for our trip.” Pip said.
“Come on Rodg, test out your new bed.” Helga said.
No way was I getting into that cramped space!
What did they mean anyway?
I’m always going on trips with them and I’ve never had to stay in a Weird Thing.
It wasn’t until they said said “hello” to someone called ‘Paul, house sitter’, goodbye to my brother Eddie the Cat and bundled me into my comfy hammock in the back of the car that I thought, “Hmmmm, something feels different.”
Tumblr media
Maybe it was the table rammed between my hammock and the seat?
Maybe it was all the stuff in the back of the car?
Maybe it was that the Weird Thing followed us down the road!
Nothing has been the same since.
Our first stop wasn’t that bad. It was only an hour or so from home and in familiar territory. My mate, Monty the Cat and his human family were there and we stayed for two whole days.
There was a lot of muttering about electric brake failure and wrong wiring but I didn’t pay attention. I was getting lots of pats and plenty to eat though Helga and Pip DID make me sleep on the door mat in the Weird Thing and I didn’t get any ‘Walkies’.
Then it was ‘bye-bye, have a great trip’ and back in the hammock.
What now?
After 3 hours we pulled up outside friends in Melbourne. ‘Oh goody,’ I thought. ‘A comfy night in a warm, human kennel!’
But no.
Another night squashed into the Weird Thing then more ‘bye-bye, have a great trip’.
What was this great ‘trip’ everyone was talking about?
“Are we there yet?” I wondered as I was invited off my hammock and asked to sit very still in front of a big sign.
Tumblr media
Yippeee. We were visiting Tom, Billy Jo, Fausto and my old friend Molly the dog. Their was heaps to eat, Walkies and lots of play with Molly while Pip, Helga and Tom went sightseeing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then there was more ‘sit still for a family photo’ and more ‘bye-bye’s’ and ‘have a great trip.
Tumblr media
The next few days were a bit of a blur.
Lots of stop, start, in and out of the hammock and ‘keep still for a photo’.
It doesn’t look like we’re going home anytime soon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next day we passed through Meningie.
Not sure what the emu was looking at. All I could see was trees and water.
Then we drove and drove.

Encounter Bay

Victor Harbour for lunch.
Tumblr media
… and then on to Goolwa.
Apparently the toilet in the Weird Thing didn’t flush so we had some Walkies and explored Hindmarsh Island while some very clever people fixed the flush.
There was a great big bridge to get across before I had to sit still again in front of a sign.
Tumblr media
I was getting quite good at sitting still.
As soon as the broken wire in the toilet was fixed I was back in the hammock and back on the road. A pattern seemed to be emerging. Drive, stop, sit still, sleep in the Weird Thing.
Getting into the Weird Thing was a little like wedging myself into a wombat hole. I decided to stop calling it Weird Thing and name it Warren. It made me happier when I wedged myself in at night.
After that things got a bit more exciting.
There was pretty scenery…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
… interesting things to sit under…
Tumblr media
… and a comfy place to stay a couple of nights. Ryelands Farm Stay and Retreat, near Tarlee S.A. Is a working farm. You could smell the sheep in the shearing shed but I didn’t get to round any up ☹️

Murray River Day
Today we have basically followed the Murray River to Mildura where it has just joined the Darling. The photos do not do the river justice as you just can't take in the enormity of the landscape but its definitely the equivalent of the Grand Canyon! The Murray is the 3rd longest navigable river in the world after the Nile and Amazon and is 2756km long and continuously navigable for 1986 m from Goolwa to Yarrawonga and spans 3 states. The river has 4 major dams, 16 storage weirs and 15 navigable locks and is a major domestic water supply. It is part of the 3rd largest water catchment area in the world.
