Today I was on the train back to our hotel from the Grand Canyon and there was this guy playing music and it also kind of doubled as a comedy act and he asked my dad “sorry I had to ask are you two married or just fooling around?” And I was like “uhm I’m his [son]” and he was like “🫢 am I in trouble? you can’t marry you [son] in this state sir” and I was so fucking uncomfortable and embarrassed it was fucking loud too and the whole part of the train car we were in heard it 😭😭😭

Last night we went to the bar and translated directions for a French woman who came in who didn't speak American, then had an early night.

Mat woke early, just before 6 and realised the sun was starting to rise so he woke Alice and we had coffee and watched the sunrise. We were being quiet and whispering, then some American couples started packing up their cars really loudly. They don't seem to have indoor voices. They were nice enough and we took some pictures of them and they took one of us.

Once the sun had risen we packed the car and headed towards Williams. We stopped off at a trading post in Cameron with a very friendly person at the entrance and a very grumpy one in the shop. We entered behind a French tour group.

Once in William we walked around town and went to the restaurant we went to last time, it's associated with the local brewery and had a delicious cactus beer. We bimbled around town a little but Alice was feeling knackered so went to check in at the hotel and chill for a little.

After a few hours we went to have dinner (up to 2 meals a day now... Uh oh). Aside from the table of French people next to us (seriously, what is with the French linkage everywhere?!) It was an incredibly English experience. We walked to the bar in the rain (yes...not only clouds but rain) and then had to order at the bar. Once sat down a train went by and there was a plug in hybrid Toyota parked outside.

We're now back in the hotel. Alice is definitely not feeling ill as we have our train booked for the grand canyon tomorrow. So we're doing another early night and hoping it's nothing.

Arizona Baby Moon

Feb 20, 2024- Kaine, Jennifer and Cletus the foetus hopped on a plane to Pheonix, AZ. We arrived late at night and went to our room to sleep and noticed ear plugs on both the night stands.. We soon realized that our room backed onto a 24hr train stop, and every time the train pulled up it tooted its horn. I know this because the sliding door to our balcony didn't close properly so we didn't miss one toot. The next morning we hopped in our dented up RAV4 (aka- the ravioli) and drove to a town just outside of Sedona and got lunch at Tortas de Fuego. Kaine had some tacos and baby had churros and ice cream.

All fuelled up on meat and sugar, we found some hikes nearby and climbed up and around the large red rock until the skies decided opened up and made us turn back. The next day (Kaine's 34h birthday) we had breakfast at the home of the 3lb cinnamon bun. We probably would have considered trying the 3lb bun, but it had raisins in it. bleh.

Fuel'd up on more meat and sugar, we went on a 10km hike to the Devils Bridge. It was flat desert filled with cactus and lizards most of the way, and close to the end we climbed some rocks to reach the bridge. We had burned off our breakfast and needed more meat and sugar, so we brought along a turkey sandwich and the most neon green muffin you've ever seen. We needed something other than meat and sugar for dinner, so we went to an Italian restaurant called Padres. While waiting for our food, our table neighbour brought to our attention that God had been telling him to talk to us all night. He recited a bible verse to us followed by some words of wisdom, then we indulged in giant bowls of thick & creamy pasta. But what's a birthday without DESSERT?! We stopped at the grocery store and got some chocolate cheesecake to eat in bed and were asleep by 9 PM. Is this what 34 looks like?

Our next destination was Tusayan, a town right beside the Grand Canyon. After driving there, we went and watched the sunset at a viewpoint in the canyon then had dinner at a Mexican restaurant. Each table at the restaurant had painted animals or scenery on it and the wooden chairs were all a colourful hand painted display of animals characters and flowers.

We'd been eating too much and needed to burn some calories! We headed to the Grand Canyon and took a shuttle bus to the South Kaibab trailhead, which has an elevation of 7460ft. From there we hiked down into the canyon to Skelton point, which is an elevation of 5200ft.

Descending is the easy part, signs of a man on all fours vomiting warned you not to try hiking the whole trail in one day or that would be your fate. I was the only pregnant person on the trail but still managed to pass a few people! A lot of the views you can see the red rock, but apparently the rock isn’t actually red, it’s just stained red from the water washing rust down it and staining it that color.

The canyon is so deep that when you look down it, depending on where you are, you can’t even see the bottom. From the odd corner you can get a glimpse of the bottom where you can see the Colorado river passing through. We hiked out of there just in time to watch another sunset and ate leftovers in the hotel after a nice dip in the hot tub.

Next, we drove to Page where we saw the Glen Canyon Dam. Just down the from the dam we hiked around the ‘bee hives’ which were tall layered red sandstone in tower formations.

It was getting hot hiking through the desert in jeans and long sleeves, so we drove over to another hike called the hanging garden. They call it the hanging garden because amidst the dry sandy landscape, there’s one random rock in the middle of the desert that has a cool moist overhang which houses moss and hanging greens growing from the lower portion of it. We climbed up the rock and ended up at a cliff where a view into the canyon emerged and you could look out to lake Powell and across the desert.

That evening we went to a local brewery for dinner where I ordered a Mac cheese, but they forgot the macaroni and just gave me a bowl or cheese sauce lol.

Before leaving Page we stopped at Horse Shoe Bend, which is another extension of the Grand Canyon that wraps around a big rock formation. We then headed out towards Prescott, home of the first ever rodeo in 1888. We stayed in Hotel StMichael, built in 1864, and rode up the original elevator with its sliding accordion doors to our room where the walls still hold the smoke smell from years ago. Unfortunately the time of year we went, pretty much everything was closed, but Kaine still managed to get some brisket!

The ride up was 90 minutes of no cellphone service. I couldn't breathe when I got to the top. All I did at the top was go pee, buy a sticker and then walk around unable to breathe. 20 minutes at the top and then another 90 minutes down. Like four hours without my phone... crazy. The view was nice up top but it was more beautiful going up on the train.

I was honestly so hot and uncomfortable during the cliff dwellings that I was like damn im out of shape. which is funny because I was in the best shape ever when I went to the grand canyon this time last year.

Friday, May 5 - Taroko Gorge

First, a few notes from yesterday. The typhoon sign is one they use to block the first tunnel during bad weather. And the marble sculptures are made with native rock and stand outside the visitor center. They looked really good all slicked with the rain!

We spent another day in Taroko Gorge - this time making three different stops. We finally figured out the busses - although there are two lines that go up from Xincheng train station, only one stops at a place called Buluwan. The gorge is extremely narrow, with almost no flat land, but at Buluwan there is an old abandoned meander (rincon for those of us in the western US) part way up the slopes. It formed two flat terraces that were originally occupied by the Taroko people, and are now home to a visitor center, hotel, parking area and relatively flat short trails. It is a very steep, winding road up from the main road through the gorge, so only the diesel busses can make it - the electric busses just don't have the power.

We followed 4 tour busses up the road to the parking - this is a popular spot on tours since there is also a pedestrian suspension bridge across the gorge at this point. It's almost 200 meters long and is 152 meters above the river. It is the fifth suspension bridge in this area, the first being built by the Japanese to have a control point for the indigenous peoples. The bus people headed for the bridge, and we headed for another trail. Once we had finished that, and looked at the replica bamboo hut and little museum showing the traditional lifestyle of the Taroko people, we headed out to the bridge. They have a guardhouse and only let 280 people on the bridge at any given time, but there were only two others at this time. The views were pretty good, the breeze was cooling and we enjoyed being there until another couple of bus loads arrived. This is a very popular spot for your groups from Korea, who take the train from Taipei for the day, get on the bus, make a couple of stops and head back to Taipei. Sort of like visiting Grand Canyon from Las Vegas.

From Buluwan there is a trail (actually stairs) that goes back down to the highway. It was completely shaded, which was lovely, and 15 minutes later we were walking along the road and through a tunnel to another trailhead - this one for Swallow Grotto. This is a section of the original road through the gorge that is still open to vehicles, but also has a walkway for pedestrians. This walk is also very popular with tour groups, who drop off folks with construction hardhats (recommended) and pick them up 1.5 kilometers later. For the rest of us, it's an out and back hike, and considering the views, we got the better deal. The gorge here has changed from gneiss downstream with a little broader valley to marble above, with almost vertical walls. This is not a true grotto, but the swallows were real!

We got back to the trailhead (and bus stop) and had to wait a little while for the next bus, and the weather went from sunny to misty to a light rain, but we were under a rockfall shelter and dry. We were planning to go up to the village at the end of the bus route and were a little concerned that if it was raining here, it would be pouring up there, but we got on the bus when it came, anyway. Within just a few kilometers, the sun came out, the sky was blue, and it was beautiful again.

Tianxiang is the name of the village at the start of the Liwu river, where two tributaries come together. There is a very upscale hotel, a park service office, a 7-Eleven, some shops and a Buddist Temple complex on the hillside above. This was actually the first area above Buluwan that was flat enough for significant building. When we arrived it was quite crowded with mostly non-Asian travelers, and we headed up the hill to the temple, where it was very quiet and peaceful. From here we could see more sections of the old road before more and longer tunnels had been built. Because of typhoons and earthquakes, the road, bridges and buildings have been frequently rebuilt, sometimes only a couple of years after original completion.

By the time we got back down to the village, almost everyone seemed to be gone, although we did see some of the local monkeys. They seem to be very adept at picking apart trash containers. We decided to take the next to last bus down, and were surprised when we passed by Swallow Grotto and it started to rain again. By the time we got further down it was pouring again - it must be a phenomenon in this gorge that it rains lower down rather than higher up!

It stopped raining when we got back to Xincheng, so we walked back to our little B&B, and had a lovely evening. The rain started just as we got back, and we sat on the balcony again and enjoyed the cooling effect. It seems a shame to leave here just as we get the busses figured out.

The pictures are fairly self-explanatory. The Taroko people used facial tattoos to denote status, and it differs for males and females. The hardhats are a tour group, and the temples were at the top. We're on our way south tomorrow to another place with a good hike, and are hoping for more relatively good weather.
