Regional American Food paints vivid tapestry of nation's cuisine Not that that tapestry is extremely flattering. If you live in the United States, your hometown more than likely has a strange, homegrown food tradition of its own—chili and cinnamon rolls, anyone? These extremely niche dishes are the purview of the Regional American Food Twitter account, which shares regional dishes from all around the country, complete with helpful (and occasionally revolting) visual aids. — Read the rest https://boingboing.net/2023/01/09/regional-american-food-paints-vivid-tapestry-of-nations-cuisine.html

15 of My Favorite Holiday Romance Books
It’s that time of year! October officially kicks off the start of holiday romance season, and I’m just fine with that. I love reading a cute Christmas story, a festive and feel good read, or a hot holiday novella as we head towards the end of the year. There are some spectacular full-length books on this list, but this is also the only season when I like to indulge in quick, festive novellas. As…

Yeah yeah shut up I know I'm already late on this, but not like it really matters. I'll just beat myself up about it later. I've just been feeling weird the last few days, but I'll chalk that up to stress and what not.
Channeling my grumpy man and Go!
DAY 3: SADDEST SCENE
Now I haven't seen absolutely everything of Hugh's but I'll go with this one for now:
https://youtu.be/Ok67OljVZic
The first time I saw it, totally bawled like a bby in the theater. Meryl just does this thing where she dies and I gotta cry. I wonder if that means anything...hmmm I'm sure it's fine.Anyways, yup! If you haven't seen this movie you totally should. So good 👌

idk if you’ve watched it yet but in the 10th celebration video, the part where Sam says “we dnt even know when we’ll be released” and Caitríona’s reaction to it had me👀….like the rest of us it seems they too can’t wait for it all to end so they can finally “released” and free from St*rz clutches. But i thought that was interesting thing to take notice of
Dear Reaction Anon,
Of course I watched it. Friday, even. But I have a dinner to plan for Wednesday, my car to sell (plot thickens...), dinners in town and various people to see.... So, sorry for the delayed answer and so incredibly sorry for being also late to the Shipper Feast.
Almost everything has been dissected to death, as it always happens, but I might still throw in my two cents, after all. So, I'll simply relisten to that video as I answer you and hit stop every time something interesting that has not been mentioned in here yet, made me go hmmm, ok?
At the 01:35 mark, S: 'yeah, it was such a whirlwind, you know, I mean, going straight into screentests and then looking for THE Claire, and it took quite a while, and then this one landed in Scotland, you know, weeks before we just started'
Here is her reaction - definitely fed up with this peasant, right?
Tumblr media
Also, as a side note, did you notice how emotional S gets every single time babies and domestic scenes are mentioned? For a man who supposedly has no family of his own, that is surely strange.
And then you are so, so right, Anon, this is how she reacted to his 'being in a bubble for ten years and we don't even know when we'll be released what the world looks like' comment:
Tumblr media
Did I notice an impish smile? Well, I surely did, Anon - and so did you.
It was a smart move to watch them watch OL. I found it very interesting, lots of clues about their joint dynamic:
Tumblr media
She, as always, is leading the pack. He is more reserved and usually takes his cues from her, constantly seeks her approval. Gradually relaxes as she seems to imply the context is 'safe enough' to loosen up a bit. And yes, this is all instinctive, by now. If I knew absolutely nothing about These Two and saw them act and react like this IRL, I would definitely have questions.
And yes, I think he could listen to her talking about WWII medical pamphlets and bandages for days and still never get bored. This guy still lives to make her laugh:
Tumblr media
Psst, Anon - see how they hate each other, here? Which really makes me think the 'just promo/fan service' argument is borderline schizophrenic, really - and why is S wooden and clumsy when promoting anything else with ANY OTHER WOMAN in our galaxy, by the way? Also, S and McTavish pretending they were still friends at that MIK event in London was 'just fan service' - this? This is not really that.
And then, oh dear me darling, that photo. I can almost hear two different kinds of 'shiiiiit' reactions, here:
Tumblr media
He knows he mustn't slip - as he usually does, she is more like 'shiiiiit, hehehe, see what we've done here'. Logically, then, he brings about that sorry modicum of an excuse 'I've been so jetlagged' (jetlag was actually the least problematic thing, in that pic, ROFL; also, there are two people in that pic, bless your 💖🤣). Followed by the only diversion he could think of: bringing in the 'thousands of people, that was incredible, blah blah' - and then she dutifully chimes in: ' I think we did Hall H...? the big one...?' (strange comments for a pic where one can see two very cozy and scantily dressed people, LOL). Dilute, dilute, dilute. But it's Horowitz reply that interested me the most: ' it's too bad you guys aren't photogenic, even after a long flight, like what a mess you guys look like, there':
Tumblr media
He threw a bait, C took it: 'weeelllll...' and then Josh ended it with a simple, smiling 'please' that, in my mind, is on par with KDS' 'believe what you want'.
I also found very telling one of the last remarks by Horowitz, too: ' it's ok, they can't fire you now, it's too late, it's way too late'. Granted, it was about the trivia and allegedly in jest, but really?
And there you have it, Anon. Perhaps it's not much, but as always, I tried to take the road less traveled by. Thanks for giving me the opportunity.

“Mold Is The Death Knell.”
Tumblr media
After doing research and documenting it on Twitter, I decided to transfer it all here. We’re going to be talking about (2x02)’s script.
Tumblr media
We (kinda?) got confirmation on the parallels between Donna and Claire in the script. There’s many metas I’ve most likely missed but here are the ones I remember:
Jamie’s instagram post on Claire/Donna by @espumado
Jamie Lee Curtis: A sydcarmy truther? by @thoughtfulchaos773
Scene lighting, blocking, & dialogue callbacks between Claire and The Berzattos by @currymanganese
There’s also my metas on Claire/Donna:
Claire: Ominous Or Naive
Glass Table & Glass Fish Tank
What Did You Get Out Of These ClairexCarmy Flashbacks Scenes?
If there’s metas I’ve missed, please feel free to reblog with the links!
Before seeing Claire again, Carmy was enjoying the orange sunset during magic hour while walking on Clark St.
Tumblr media
Since I saw the words ‘orange sunset’, I automatically assumed that it was golden hour when this scene had occurred.
Tumblr media
Blue hour is apart of magic hour as well. I read a bit about it in this article, “Mastering Golden Hour, Blue Hour (Magic Hours) and Twilights | Natural Light Photography.”
Magic hours are a more diffuse concept than twilights because there is no mathematical definition. In fact, both the golden hour and blue hour, also known as the magic hours, overlap with civil twilight.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m wondering if they tried to capture golden and blue hour at the grocery store with artificial lighting instead of natural lighting to insinuate a fakeness to their reunion/relationship.
I also happened to stumble upon another potential meaning to golden hour. A person’s golden hour is the first hour after a severe internal injury.
Tumblr media
Granted, being cut by sharp objects like glass is an external injury. But, in the dialogue, Claire talks about how the girl was bleeding and they couldn’t figure out what the source was. Wouldn’t you be able to tell where the bleeding stemmed from if it was just external? It could mean there was internal damage as well.
Tumblr media
Mold is the death knell which is a sounding of a bell to mark someone’s death or used to refer to the imminent destruction or failure of something.
(A bell to mark the death of Mikey and the failure of The Bear?)
Tumblr media
There was a discussion of mold pertaining to Claire and the potential meaning of it in @moodyeucalyptus’s meta on Claire being a bad doctor with @vacationship’s reblog about how penicillin is an antibiotic coming from green and blue mold while fennel is a natural antibiotic.
Tumblr media
All of this to say mold is the death knell, golden hour is also a term used in the medical field for trauma patients, and that girl that Claire told Carmy about was a trauma patient that was given penicillin while having an allergy to it by Claire reading her chart wrong.
There’s so many interesting details in the network draft/script! If I’m wrong about any of this, let me know of course. As always, thank you so much for reading! If I haven’t replied to your comments or reblogs lately, I was shadowbanned briefly before getting my account back so yay! If you tagged me, I didn’t see them unfortunately :(

The Construction of Rosslyn chapel began on 20th September 1456.
Properly known as the Collegiate Chapel of St Matthew in the village of Roslin, Midlothian, this is just a couple of miles from where I grew up.
The building of the chapel is sometimes incorrectly given as ten years before, but that date comes from the chapel’s receiving its founding charter from Rome.
We are very lucky that Rosslyn Chapel remains intact, as we see it today, you only have to look around Scotland at the ruins of our Abbeys destroyed during the Reformation, Rosslyn was closed from around 1560,The chapel’s altars were destroyed in 1592 but the main structure is thought to have survived and any real damage was avoided.
The chapel was built by The Sinclair family and has been linked with the Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon, that’s the Knights Templar to you and I, the order was disbanded around 150 years before construction but symbols, such as the “Two riders on a single horse” that appear on the Seal of the Knights Templar, can be found on the building.
Rosslyn Chapel was constructed almost entirely in stone, with no structural timber except within the much later Victorian baptistery added to the west end of the chapel. The chapel is thought to be only part of what was intended to be a much larger church, and it exhibits immense historic, architectural and cultural value. The extent of carved stonework both internally and externally makes this little chapel truly unique. Though incomplete, it took around 40 years to build, and has the largest number of Green Man carvings of any medieval chapel in Europe.
The carvings of the chapel have been the subject of much speculation and conjecture, as Christian symbolism and other references are interspersed throughout the building. In 1630, Sir William Sinclair of Rosslyn was granted the charters from the Masons of Scotland, which confirms that the St Clairs were traditional Grand Masters of the Masons of Scotland. Accordingly, Rosslyn Chapel is of considerable interest to Masonic groups. Other carvings at Rosslyn Chapel are of religious, natural, or decorative nature, such as the Apprentice Pillar and the Seven Acts of Mercy panel.
Following the Reformation, services stopped being held in 1592 and did not begin again until the Chapel was re-dedicated in Victorian times.
Oliver Cromwell had his men stable their horses in the chapel in 1650 when he and General George Monck conquered nearby Roslin Castle.
Queen Victoria visited the site during her reign and was instrumental in restoring the Chapel to it’s original state for worship according to Protestant rites of the Scottish Episcopal Church and was re-dedicated as a place of worship on 22nd April 1862
I remember my mum talking about the Apprentice Pillar and how there was speculation that The Holy Grail is possibly encased within it, she talked about this in the 1970′s, about 30 years before the Chapel became more famous due to Dan Brown’s novel and film The Da Vinci Code.
I got the majority of the pics from the Alamy website, they date from the mid 19the century, some are from around 1852 while the one with the two figures walking through the church is from a book printed in 1859. Note most of these are before Queen Victoria's visit, so it shows the building was still in a good state of repair then. The top pic is from John Slezer's 'Theatrum Scotiae' is an important record of Scottish towns, castles and palaces in the 17th century. For most of these places, it contains some of the earliest views that survive. The first edition was 1693 so I think I am safe in saying it is the oldest depiction of Rosslyn Chapel.
Theatrum Scotiae also included written information on the drawings featured, the noted Scottish physician and antiquarian Robert Sibbald wrote;
Rosslyn Chapel
To the Right Honourable GEORGE Earl of Caithness, Lord Biridall, &c.
Roslin Chapel
This Chapel lies in Mid-Lothian, Four Miles from Edinburgh, and is one of the most curious Pieces of Workman-ship in Europe. The Foundation of this rare Building was laid Anno 1440 by William St Clair, Prince of Orkney, Duke of Holdenburgh, &c. A Man as considerable for the publick Works which he erected, as for the Lands which he possess'd, and the Honours which were conferred upon him by several of the greatest Princes of Europe. It is remarkable that in all this Work there are not two Cuts of one fort. The most curious Part of the Building is the Vault of the Quire, and that which is called the Prince's Pillar so much talk'd of. This Chapel was possess'd by a Provost, and Seven Cannons Regular, who were endued with several considerable Revenues through the Liberality of the Lairds of Roslin.
Here lies buried George Earl of Caithness, who lived about the Beginning of the Reformation, Alexander Earl of Sutherland, great Grand-Child to King Robert de Bruce, Three Earls of Orkney, and Nine Barons of Roslin.
The last lay in a Vault, so dry that their Bodies have been found intire after Fourscore Years, and as fresh as when they were first buried. There goes a Tradition, That before the Death of any of the Family of Roslin, this Chapel appears all in Fire.

But something monstrous, and ancient, and terrifying, wouldn't let her drown. Finch doesn't know why she woke up after her heart stopped, but since dying she's felt a constant pull from the school and the surrounding town of Rainwater, like something on the island is calling to her.
Selena St. Clair sees right through Finch, and she knows something is seriously wrong with her. But despite Selena's suspicion, she feels drawn to Finch and has a sinking feeling that from now on the two will be inexplicably linked to one another.
One night Finch, Selena, and her friends accidentally summon a carnivorous creature of immense power in the depths of the school. Obviously we know that the idea of someone getting £700 or more annually from "professional begging" - enough to make them wealthy - is bullshit.
But in case you needed more info about just how much it's bullshit, the fantastic resource that is VictorianLondon.org quotes this from 'Sketches in London' by James Grant, from 1838.
I have made inquiries of a gentleman who has been officially occupied with the subject for the last few years, as to what may be the average amount which the street-beggars annually receive from a generous but too confiding public; and he says that very few of them average less than thirty shillings a week. In order, however, that we may be under rather than above the mark, let us take the average at twenty shillings per week
This is almost certainly also bullshit, since it buys into the same "professional beggar" narrative. But James Grant only has his professional beggars earning 20-30 shillings, or £1-1.50, per week. Or 10 times less than Arthur Conan Doyle claims for Neville St. Clair, who he has earning a minimum of £2 per day.
But 1838 wasn't 1891. Surely 20 shillings was worth less by then?
Tumblr media
Nope, it was worth more.
So even someone buying into the exact same bullshit as ACD provides a figure that makes ACD's claims look ridiculous.

Sony and Honda put Playstation 5 in cars to compete with Tesla During its CES 2023 presentation, Sony announced AFEELA, a new brand of electric cars in collaboration with Honda. It seems like your fairly standard futuristic concept car at first glance, albeit with a slightly sillier name, save one function in particular- the ability to play PS5 games in your car. — Read the rest https://boingboing.net/2023/01/08/sony-and-honda-put-playstation-5-in-cars-to-compete-with-tesla.html

Eight Billion Genies by Charles Soule and Ryan Browne. Image, 2023. 9781534323537. Publisher's Rating: Mature Readers. Contains #1 - 8. Includes an extensive cover gallery, The Secret History of…, sketches, and the behind-the-scenes guide to issue 1 including a list of Easter eggs. https://www.powells.com/book/-9781534323537?partnerid=34778&p_bt
It's an ordinary day at the Lampwick Bar and Grill in St. Clair Shores, Michigan. The Bada-Bings are setting up their instruments to play a live show. It's twelve-year-old Robbie's birthday, and his dad is passed out at the bar. Mr. Williams is running the place, and he surprises Robbie when he speaks Chinese to help the couple who wanders in. And then a child is born, making the human population eight billion, and suddenly genies appear, offering a wish to each and every person alive.
Williams quickly makes his wish, to protect his bar and everything and everyone inside it. Outside, all hell breaks loose. Bombs go off, real and figurative. The human population starts falling, and so does the number of genies (each disappears after it grants its wish).
The story that unfolds is entertaining, wild, and really compelling. And in the end it covers 800 years or so after the first wish.
This is one of the few recent series I read whenever a new issue came out. Plus the hardcover is truly deluxe with lots of extras.
