Bravo! Vail, Philadelphia Orchestra Contract Extension

The Bravo! Vail Music Festival is pleased to announce that The Philadelphia Orchestra will continue to be a mainstay of this distinguished summer destination for classical music, with a three-year contract extension ensuring its presence in Vail from 2019-2021. The announcement was made by Bravo! Vail Artistic Director Anne-Marie McDermott and The Philadelphia Orchestra's Board Chairman Richard Worley and Interim President Ryan Fleur during its finale performance on Saturday, July 14, 2018, with esteemed pianist Daniil Trifonov. The Philadelphia Orchestra first performed at Bravo! Vail in 2007. More information about Bravo! Vail is available at www.bravovail.org.

Highlights of The Philadelphia Orchestra's relationship with Bravo! Vail include the Festival debut or world premiere of works by Mason Bates, Guillaume Connesson, and Jennifer Higdon, as well as notable orchestral transcriptions created by the Orchestra's famed late Music Director Leopold Stokowski. Together, they also presented the Festival's first film screening with the live score, Disney's Fantasia in 2014, and the concert music of critically acclaimed film composer John Williams. The Orchestra also brought the circus to the mountains with the exciting debut production of Cirque de la Symphonie at Bravo! Vail.

An iconoclastic composer and musician, Thomas Roussel brings together an impressive background in classical music but with an abiding passion for electronic music.

Under the name Prequell, he released a first and ambitious album recorded with the famed London Symphony Orchestra in 2017.

As a conductor, he is no stranger to spectacular events and in a single year, 2018, led a group of 80 musicians on the Seine River in front of the Eiffel Tower, followed by 40 musicians at the foot of the Forbidden City in Beijing.

To celebrate 15 years of Ed Banger Records, Pedro Winter entrusted him with arranging and orchestrating songs by the label’s iconic artists, including Justice, Mr Oizo, Laurent Garnier and Breakbot.

Thomas Roussel’s free-thinking and creativity, like his ability to break away from the beaten path, could not but endear him to the Richard Mille brand, founded in 2001 with a determination to shatter the existing codes of Haute Horlogerie while promoting craftsmanship and extreme technicity. ‘The uncompromising standards and inventiveness of Richard Mille watches echo the rigour and imagination required for composing orchestral music,’ notes Thomas Roussel. ‘But beyond this, we share the same notion of communicating passion and emotion, and the same desire to carve out new creative pathways.’

They have in common a passion for contemporary art and artistic professions whose ceaseless invention is always anchored in great precision. Thomas Roussel’s entry into the Richard Mille family is fully in keeping with the brand’s commitment to contemporary creation—from its acquisition of the Éditions Cercle d’Art, founded with the support of Pablo Picasso, to its partnerships with Frieze, the leading contemporary art fair and with the Palais de Tokyo in Paris.

About Thomas Roussel

When Thomas Roussel learned to read and write music at three years old, before he could begin to decipher a book, could he have foreseen the singular destiny that would send him on a journey through the worlds of both classical music and electronica, one that would see him compose scores for feature films and orchestrate some of music’s largest events from New York to Beijing?

With his solid foundation of conservatory training, starting at five years of age at the piano, six for the violin, he seemed predestined for a glorious classical career. But the young man was just as passionate about electronic music. After classes in composition and orchestration, he would hasten to listen to the greatest DJs of the day. Already, as a teenager, he had met Daft Punk and Laurent Garnier. Such was the beginning of what would become a long story.

When Thomas continued his studies in Paris, under the prestigious composer Guillaume Connesson, he sustained a parallel collaboration with the Techno music pioneer Jeff Mills. His final exam for Connesson proved a formative experience: a composition for symphony orchestra produced in just twelve hours whilst locked in a room without a single instrument. He emerged victorious from this final challenge, with the congratulations of the jury. An experience he capitalises on today, it allowed him to write and orchestrate in just eight days the score he conducted with 80 musicians on the Seine River to celebrate Paris’ candidacy as host for the 2024 Olympic Games. Prior to that, he composed for film, and undertook any number of projects with other musicians, such is the passionate fervour of the man. His talents as a conductor, musician and composer soon attracted the great fashion houses, who invited him to imagine the music for their shows. From the Grand Palais all the way to China, Thomas Roussel has reinvented the codes of his genre and participated in ever more original and spectacular performances. Under his baton, orchestras have played all in a row in Paris, in a circle in Guangzhou, and even suspended in the air at a memorable fashion show from the beginning of this year.

For more than fifteen years, Thomas Roussel has remained faithful to both his true loves, classical music and electronic music, unrepentantly departing from the beaten path to navigate between two worlds that know all too little of each other. For a 2018 performance with dozens of musicians at Le Grand Rex in Paris, he re-orchestrated titles from the Ed Banger electronic music catalogue for the label’s 15th anniversary. Yet his music can by no means be reduced to a mere hybridisation of two genres. Indeed, its full scope was already on display with the release of his first album, The Future Comes Before, in 2017. Under the name Prequell, the musician reveals himself to be a fantastic pop composer.

Thomas Roussel composes using orchestras, grand string ensembles and percussion sections, but also, obviously, synthesisers and machines. Always and throughout, his music remains utterly singular, transcending the boundaries of style. His compositions are like comets sweeping through galaxies, warlike or peaceful, ferocious or serene. Each one is crafted of pure emotion. His is a tangible and generous approach, one the musician shares with Richard Mille and which should soon give rise to collaborative projects.

Rétro 2016 musique classique

Les coups de cœur de l’Espace musique de la Médiathèque de Vincennes pour l’année 2016. Tous les morceaux de nos playlists sont à retrouver dans nos collections.

On commence par un hommage à André Isoir avec sa transcription créative pour orgue du Concerto pour 4 clavecins en la mineur de Jean-Sébastien Bach, interprétée par ses anciens élèves François Espinasse et Michel Bouvard. S'en suit plusieurs pièces pour piano dont une de Wang Jianzhong jouée par la française (et Vincennoise !) d'origine chinoise Bin Wang, qui nous propose un enregistrement unique autour des “Maîtres chinois du piano”. Le violoncelle et la trompette (accompagnés du piano) sont également brillamment mis à l'honneur respectivement avec les albums “Réminiscences” de Camille Thomas et Julien Libeer, et “Légende” d’Alison Balsom et Tom Poster. On passe ensuite à la musique vocale : d’abord sacrée avec notamment des extraits de messes de Scarlatti, Isaac ou Zelenka, puis profane avec l’un des 7 péchés capitaux autour des œuvres de Monteverdi – ou plutôt 14 comme proposés par l’ensemble Cappella Mediterranea dirigé par Leonardo Garcia Alarcon – et des extraits du trop méconnu opéra “I Gioielli della Madonna” de Wolf-Ferrari. On revient enfin à la musique instrumentale avec d’abord la très sombre et cinématographique Symphonie n° 3 de Henryk Górecki issue de l’excellente rétrospective du label Nonesuch, puis diverses œuvres allant de la musique baroque (le Largo du Concerto à 4 parties, œuvre XII de Jean-Baptiste Quentin par l’ensemble Nevermind) à la musique moderne (du Schoenberg par le Quatuor Diotima), en passant par la musique romantique avec un extrait du Quintette pour 2 violons, alto et 2 violoncelles en ut majeur de Schubert par le Quatuor Ebène. Et pour la musique contemporaine, il faudra venir à la médiathèque pour écouter (sur cd ou via l'un de nos lecteurs mp3 disponibles sur place) l’énergique concerto pour flûte et orchestre Pour sortir au jour de Guillaume Connesson sur l’album du même nom interprété par le flûtiste Mathieu Dufour et le Brussels Philharmonic dirigé par Stéphane Denève, aucun extrait n'étant disponible sur Youtube... Même cas de figure pour le répertoire romantique autour des légendes du Rhin de “Rheinmädchen” proposé par l’ensemble Pygmalion sous la baguette de Raphaël Pichon, qui s’impose comme l’une des plus belles réussites de l’année. Malgrat que el programa de mà d’aquest cap de setmana deia L’OBC i el Bolero de Ravel, crec que si la sala presentava una ocupació molt alta (públic de mitjana octogenària) era més per el grandiós concert per a violí i orquestra de Ludwig van Beethoven, una obra que mai fa mandra escoltar. És un dels grans concerts per a violí i necessita d’un gran intèrpret i l’OBC l’ha tingut amb Nikolaj…

Guillaume Connesson, entre Debussy et Ravel

Les sextuor de Guillaume Connesson est un véritable plaisir pour les musiciens, il est teinté de la musique de Debussy et en prolonge d'ailleurs l'inspiration un siècle après. Connesson est un compositeur français né en 1970 à Boulogne-Billancourt. Il dirige actuellement le chœur de l'O.C.U.P. (orchestre et chœur des universités de Paris), et enseigne l'orchestration au CNR d'Aubervilliers-la Courneuve.

Il a étudié le piano, l'analyse, l'histoire de la musique, et la direction de chœur au Conservatoire National de Région de Boulogne-Billancourt et la composition auprès de Marcel Landowski pendant six ans, à partir de 1989. Avec Dominique Rouits, au Conservatoire National de Région de Paris, il a également étudié la direction d'orchestre et avec Alain Louvier, l'orchestration.

En tant que compositeur, il revendique des influences aussi diverses que François Couperin, Richard Wagner, Richard Strauss, Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, Igor Stravinski, Olivier Messiaen pour la Turangalîla-Symphonie et St François d'Assise, Henri Dutilleux pour ses Métaboles, Steve Reich et plus encore John Adams mais également des musiciens de cinéma tels Bernard Herrmann ou John Williams ou de funk tel James Brown.

De 2001 à 2003, il est compositeur en résidence à l'Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire, pour lequel il écrit la symphonie vocale Liturgies de l'ombre et le poème symphonique L'appel au feu.

Il est actuellement compositeur associé au Royal Scottish National Orchestra.

Depuis la rentrée 2007, il dirige le chœur de l'OCUP (Orchestre et Chœur des Universités de Paris).Depuis 2009 il est compositeur en résidence à l'Orchestre de Pau Pays de Béarn.
