#Gundam Wing: Battlefield of Pacifists

Do you mind if I ask about what happened after battlefield of pacifists?

I'm fairly sure I have it in storage but I don't remember it being complete. I think I was under the impression it was a side story they never finished. Did they pick it up in the beginning of FT? I remember my book stopping right after quatre lays out the plan to bluff the kidnapper/terrorists.

Battlefield of Pacifists ends just before the events of Endless Waltz with the boys (sans Wufei) deciding the new era has no need for Gundams and Wufei deciding his fight is not over.

Ground Zero, Battlefield of Pacifists and Blind Target are all midquels taking place in between the events of the anime and the events of Endless Waltz.

So for a quick timeline it goes:

0: Episode Zero (sans Preventor Epilogue)

1: Anime (sans epilogue) - War ends December AC195

2: Ground Zero - GZ epilogue takes place the day before the animes epilogue

3: Anime Epilogue - April AC196

4: Battlefield of Pacifists

5: Blind Target - ends with Wufei meeting up with Mariamaia and Dekim Barton

6: Endless Waltz

7: Episode Zero Preventor 5 epilogue and Frozen Teardrop Preventor 5 chapters

8: Frozen Teardrop

Frozen Teardrop continues with the Perfect Peace People from BoP (or at least a very similar terrorist group) being antagonists to Relena's idea of peace as well as the talks of humanity advancing further beyond the Earth sphere to other planets. So while not a direct sequel to BoP it is a sequel to the series as a whole.

My first "costume" was a closet cosplay of Duo Maxwell in Gundam Wing's Battlefield of Pacifists manga. Since it was in black and white, I guessed at the colors and textures and I used my real hair, which was pretty long back then. This was... maybe 2005? This one girl came up to me and actually told me how shitty this costume was... Luckily I didn't care and kept going!

Everyone has to start somewhere. Even if your first costume is an off-color/off-texture nightmare! Don't be shitty to other people though! Just let people have fun and do their thing. Especially if they aren't harming anyone!

Obviously I do not wear this costume anymore, but maybe one day I will completely redo it!

Gundam Wing: Minutia and Trivia

On my long and winding way down research rabbit holes, I often stumble on bits and pieces of trivia that I find quite interesting, but don't really fit anywhere in my usual commentary on Gundam canon and are far too niche and inconsequential to merit a post of their own. HOWEVER. Since I know in my heart that you, dear reader, are also the sort of person for whom background details of the absolute least consequential variety are a source of delight and inspiration, I am compiling some of my discoveries here, and perhaps if I find more, there will be follow up posts. This one happens to be, in a very loose sense, mostly about Romefeller, OZ, and its Special Eyebrow People, because that is where my brain worms are currently converging. Here is my collection of useless trivia. I lay them at your feet like weird pebbles. Look at them. They're neat.

1. The Daily Kingdom Newspaper

It's quite likely that this has already been done, but in the grand spirit of this blog, I have decided to take the path of highest effort for the stupidest reason, and transcribed this paper. This page of After Colony news, ostensibly from July 14th, A.C. 195, appears to be reporting on events that happened towards the end of World War II. It's apparently been a slow news day for the Sanc Kingdom press for several centuries. I found myself getting kind of wrapped up in the stories and was disappointed I couldn't turn the page and find out what happened next. (I mean, I know what happened next, broadly speaking.) Of particular interest were Henri and Camille Dreyfus, Swiss chemists who made a lot of innovations during both world wars. ...They were also apparently noted OZ supporters? Well, what can you expect from a big industrial supplier of*checks notes* acetyl intermediates.

2. The OZ doggy

This spotty and behaved hound is a real breed of hunting dog, the German Short-haired Pointer, or GSP! Did you know this, dear reader? I did not know this. This is new Dog Lore to me.

from the wiki: "It is a pointer and retriever, an upland bird dog, and water dog. The GSP can be used for hunting larger and more dangerous game. It is an excellent swimmer but also works well in rough terrain. It is tenacious, tireless, hardy, and reliable. German Shorthaired Pointers are proficient with many different types of game and sport, including trailing, retrieving, and pointing pheasant, quail, grouse, waterfowl, raccoons, opossum, and even deer."

Seems like a perfect bird-hunting companion for Mr. Treize. She'll probably go retrieve the beautiful red phoenix he murdered. I've decided she's named Oscar (after the Rose of Versailles) and she is a very good girl. Braver Oscar! Braver Hund!

3. Luxembourg Castle

This is Treize's abandoned Disney castle in Luxembourg. I owe the background artists of this scene an apology, for in my heart I assumed this was a random assemblage of spare castle-parts they found at Ludwig II's rummage sale. Reader, I was wrong:

THIS is Schloss Viandin, a restored castle in Luxembourg. Look at this place, it's gorgeous! You can hardly tell there's a secret mobile suit bunker in the basement. Frankly, I'm jealous I'm not being confined there, Treize! Stop sulking in the catacombs and go relax in the pretty princess bed until you feel better. Gaze upon the signed picture of Patrick Swayze; let him inspire you.

4. Romefeller's Secret

This one comes to us from the Battlefield of Pacifists manga, which, I've learned, is pretty good actually. (I mean it's not GOOD good, but it contains some interesting stuff). Now, come: I am taking you with me on this journey:

I feel extremely vindicated knowing that there's semi-canonical support for my theory that the Romefeller aristobrats are Austrian. I knew it. I KNEW IT. According to this manga, Romefeller was officially founded in Vienna-- the wording is a little ambiguous in this translation, but if Romefeller had members joining it in 1862, then it had to have existed in some form since then-- which means that the "Glorious Year" of 1956 is something other than its founding date. So what exactly happened in 1956? As I am a hack and fraud, and have been one all my life, I have looked to wikipedia for guidance. Mostly what was happening was the Cold War, colonialism, uprisings, Elvis, research and debate over artificial intelligence, both the hard drive disk and the snooze-button alarm clock being invented, Japan joining the UN, and wait what's this--

COMPUTER, ENHANCE:

It's all coming together.

5. The Romefeller Coat of Arms

I'm no vexillologist, and my heraldic experience is limited to adoptable pixel dragons, but what I am is an insane person with too much time on their hands. And so, to the best of my ability, I have blazoned the Romefeller coat of arms:

Supporters: Two Unicorns Rampant 

Crown: Purpur Crown of Peerage or Lord of Parliament  

Escutcheon: Heater with Two Engrailed Wedge Top - party per pale (halved vertically)

--I don't know what UPRTVN is meant to stand for, but there are truly SO many ways you could play Latin Mad Libs and get a reasonable-sounding answer. At a stab, knowing Romefeller's priorities and values, I would guess it probably contains a, you know, "Unity/Peace/Rule/Tradition/Victory/Necessity", "Unity Through The Rule of Tradition Is Our Victory", or some such deeply worrying thing. Take your pick really.

6. "Herbst" / "Autumn"

The Rilke poem Treize quotes in "Frozen Teardrop" is not terribly difficult to find online, but if you're not sure what you're looking for it can be difficult because he has multiple poems about Autumn, and Autumn Day is perhaps better known; also the internet is absolutely filthy riddled with despicable bots and farmed content that has lost its attributions, so you do have to dig to find where different translations have come from (bless this very Web 1.0 page for carrying on the lord's work in basic html). Here is the original in German, and two complimenting translations:

Herbst -Rainer Maria Rilke Die Blätter fallen, fallen wie von weit als welkten in den Himmeln ferne Gärten; sie fallen mit verneinender Gebärde. This translation by Horst A. Scholz (linked here so I don't get into trouble) is the most spare and one-to-one translation into English I've found-- I always appreciate having a comparison between the very literal meanings and a more creative reconstruction when I'm reading translated poetry.

Meanwhile on the other end of the spectrum, this translation by Robert Bly is very freeform and agnostic; for my own purposes, I think the use of "Space" instead of "Heaven" happens to fit nicely with the themes of Gundam:

Autumn -translation by Robert Bly The leaves are falling, falling as if from far up, as if orchards were dying high in space. Each leaf falls as if it were motioning "no." The PC version of SD Gundam G Generation Cross Rays will launch in the west alongside Japan and Asia on November 27, the game’s newly launched Steam page reveals. It will be available in $59.99 standard and $84.99 deluxe editions.

While Bandai Namco has yet to officially announce a western release, the Steam page contains a trailer with a rating from the North America-based Entertainment Software Rating Board.

PlayStation 4 and Switch versions of SD Gundam G Generation Cross Rays are also due out on the same day in Japan and Asia with English language support. That said, it is currently unknown whether those versions of the game are also planned for release in the west. Gematsu has contacted Bandai Namco for comment and is awaiting a response. (Update 9:08 p.m.: A Bandai Namco representative told Gematsu, “Unfortunately, we don’t have any news to share at this very moment.”)

I love how Trowa is always the go-between guy for Duo and Hilde 😂. Even in FT it's still Trowa when Duo calls him needing money for his medical expenses but due to Trowa being out of town (or more like Mars) Trowa contacts Hilde to help out instead.

I guess Hilde did get that "cute clown's" number after all lmao.

More seriously though, since Trowa is the only other pilot Hilde meets, I like to think she tries to keep in contact with him for Duo's sake, knowing that Duo won't with him being a Gundam Pilot and thinking that means he's doomed to a life of loneliness.

In Japan, Quatre Raberba Winner is the least popular Gundam Wing pilot. Although he acquits himself well, fans of the series there still refer to him as the “space heart wimp” because they think he’s not a stoic bad-ass like Hiiro, Trowa, and Wu Fei are, and tends to wear his heart on his sleeve.

Unfortunately, some American fans see him that way, too, or even worse, and that's just as wrong.

Reasons for being hated: wimp, useless, stupid, hypocrite, crybaby, manipulative/abusive asshole, not a fighter, a whiny brat, crazy/can "go ZERO" and kill everyone at any moment, gets in the way of alternate Trowa pairings, is Trowa's canon love interest.

WAH!!! Quatre is a wimp!!!

Then why does Trowa call him the strongest person he knows, not just in the series, but in canonical mangas such as Blind Target or Battlefield of Pacifists? And if Cat’s such a wimp, why does Hiiro pass the baton of leadership to him in the series?

If he were a wimp, which he isn’t, he would never have earned the respect of any of the other Gundam pilots, let alone Rashid and the Maguanac Corps, Commander Sada'ul, Noin, Sally, or his own sister, Iria.

Quatre isn't "useless"; he's a soldier, a strategist, and leader of men.  That he has the soul of an artist is a plus.  Besides, if he were "useless," the character would never have seen the light of day.

Bitch, please.  According to some sources, and hinted at in the manga version of GW, he wrote the ZERO System BY HIMSELF.  If that makes him stupid in your opinion, then you need a new dictionary, because you don't know the meaning of the word.

Uh, no.  His father and sisters are the pacifists in his family; Quatre isn't, and even says as much to Duo in "The Whereabouts of Happiness."  Like his mother, Quatre is a fighter.

Again, please.  Quatre cries exactly four times in the entire series: when he detonates Sandrock, when his father is killed and Iria is injured, when he sees the remains of Trowa's Vayate and the enormity of what happened in the L2 cluster hits him, and when he finds Trowa alive.

Look, just because Quatre is an empath doesn't mean he's manipulative.  Quatre is a receptive empath, not a projective one like Lady Une is.  He only receives the emotions of others.  He can't project his to others.

Oh, and just because someone is abused and/or neglected throughout their childhood, much like Quatre was, doesn't mean he's going to become an abuser, too.

Gimme a break. All the official data released by Sunrise states, and I quote, that Quatre received the same level of training the other Gundam pilots did.

How is he whiny? He doesn’t throw fits or temper tantrums. Have you forgotten that he goes through a lot of crap during the series? I think you’re confusing Quatre with Dorothy.

I call this "Cupcakes" Syndrome, if I can be forgiven for referencing a truly hideous My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic fanfic titled "Cupcakes."  It's also completely inaccurate.

Being an empath, Quatre felt his father die the moment it happened and his eldest sister's physical pain and emotional suffering.   Therefore , he experienced a psychotic break and went temporarily insane from an overload of pain and suffering that wasn't his own.  He wasn't "crazy" when he piloted Wing Zero; the ZERO actually blocked Quatre's empathy to the point where he didn't feel his own emotions, much less any outside ones.

WAH!!! Quatre gets in the way of other Trowa pairings!!!

Oy, ye'bat.

This is the one thing that can really turn me off a fandom, when some fans stoop so low as to hating on a character because, in their opinion, they get in the way of their preferred pairings.

This also ties into the “Quatre is a manipulative/abusive asshole” bit.  Some fans use that out of character misrepresentation to justify their preferred Trowa pairing.

Well, I'm sorry, but there are some folks in this world who enjoy canon couples, and your pairings aren't the only ones out there. So please, please, PLEASE GET THE FUCK OVER YOURSELF and let others have their opinions, too, without trying to tear them down because they like something you don't care for, okay?

Well, this all relates back to the above, pairings.  Yes, he may be Trowa's canon love interest in the series, but that could be what the creator(s) had in mind when they created his character in the first place.

In the end, you can't control canon, you can't control what the creators' original intentions were, and you most certainly can't control the creators' own creations in a canonically proven way like, obviously, the creators can.

WAH!!! Trowa belongs with me/Duo/Hiiro/Middie Une/my OC!!!

You know, you're certainly welcome to pair Trowa up with whomever you choose, but that doesn't mean we have to drop the pairing we like.  No one knows who either Trowa or Quatre are going to end up with.  That's something only their creators can decide.

By the way, they'd decided that Middie Une was a one-shot deal before the Episode Zero episodes were cut from the production schedule.

As for the "me" part, Trowa would never love you because one, he doesn't exist, and two, even if he did, he wouldn't tolerate anybody hating on Quatre because he's very important to him. Trowa only belongs to Sunrise/Sotsu, and nobody else.

I redid the timeline again but this time with pictures! This is my take on what order all the anime/manga/novels/radio dramas take place in the Gundam Wing universe. For a quick recap, this is the order and dates:

Anime series begins on Relena’s Birthday, April 06 and ends Christmas Eve. The final battle later becomes known as “The Eve Wars”. The novelisation I believe is similar to the anime so for now I'm listing it as concurrent instead of an alternate interpretation.

3. Chronicle of the After Colony Era: AC 195

Takes place during the anime series, after Heero wakes up from his coma and is travelling with Trowa. Duo is still travelling with Quatre, and Relena has just revived the Sanc Kingdom.

4. Odds and Evens: AC 195 December 24.

Takes place immediately after the final battle of the anime series.

5. Anime Epilogue: AC 196 April 06.

Takes place on Relena’s Birthday the following year with her being too busy as Vice Foreign Minister to attend her birthday party. She also receives the bear and card gifts from Heero.

6. Battlefield of Pacifists: AC 196

For the three midquels, I put this one first. My reasoning is that Quatre first comes up with the idea to send the Gundams into the sun, to the surprise of Duo. Wufei realizes that he still has to fight for justice despite the war ending.

7. Blind Target Manga and Radio Drama: AC 196

This is the second on the timeline for the three midquels. The need to destroy the Gundams becomes more apparent for the boys as the remnants of White Fang use the Gundams protecting peace as a point for why the UESN cannot be trusted with total disarmament. Wufei meets up with Mariamaia and Dekim Barton.

8. Ground Zero (sans epilogue): AC 196

The final of the three midquels. After agreeing to destroy the Gundams, Duo, Quatre and Trowa suspect that Heero is secretly planning to continue to use Wing Zero and devise a way to learn his intentions. Wufei is already wearing the Mariamaia Doll uniform showing it takes place after Blind Target.

9. Endless Waltz Movie and Novelization: AC 196 December 24 to December 27 /Epilogue: AC 197 January 01

The Mariamaia Incident starts on Christmas Eve, exactly one year after the Eve Wars, and ends on December 27. The Epilogue takes place on New Year’s Day.

The Endless Waltz novelisation is concurrent with the movie. I also listed it in the same timeline due to not contradicting canon. It follows the same story with added extra backstory for characters.

10. Ground Zero Epilogue: AC 197

The epilogue for Ground Zero states that it took place in AC 197 making it take place after Endless Waltz. Heero also promises to stay by Relena’s side.

11. Frozen Teardrop Preventor 5 part 1: AC 197 March to AC 197 April 07

March- Heero is staying at the Darlian Estate by this point with Relena tending to his wounds that had accumulated over the series. Relena is planning to run for president of the UESN.

April 07- Relena throws a campaign party on the day after her birthday. Sanc Kingdom is under attack by a terrorist organization. Wufei and Sally gather the Gundam Pilots to carry out a rescue mission.

12. Episode Zero Epilogue: AC 197 April 07

Concurrent with Frozen Teardrop Preventor 5 part 1. Relena throws a campaign party on the day after her birthday. Sanc Kingdom is under attack by a terrorist organization. Wufei and Sally gather the Gundam Pilots to carry out a rescue mission. Quatre devises a plan for them to rescue the hostages without anyone dying, enemies included.

13. Frozen Teardrop Preventor 5 part 2: AC 197 April 09

The new Preventor 5 team carry out the rescue mission. The mission doesn’t go as planned and fails. Relena sacrifices herself to save the Sanc Kingdom and is cryogenically frozen. Heero is also frozen sometime later.

14. Frozen Teardrop Light Novel series and Picture Drama: MC 22 Next Winter to MC 23 First Spring

25 years later Heero Yuy awakens to fight a new war on Mars along with the old and new Gundam Pilots.

There’s a full timeline for the events leading up to current day Frozen Teardrop that I will translate as a later edit for this post. It covers all the backstories as well as important historical events of the Mars Colony Era. I will also add the extra dates mentioned in Frozen Teardrop as I translate the series.

15. Frozen Teardrop Epilogue: MC 23 First Summer.

Heero and Relena have been married for 5 months and peace is slowly coming to Mars.

I looked over all my manga and light novels to check dates so hopefully this is all accurate. It all surprisingly fits in nicely too, so I guess the writers were careful not to contradict each other’s extra stories.

Content that doesn’t fit on the timeline or is contradictory to canon:

Glory of the Losers - This is a reboot, so it has its own timeline and canon with different versions of events from the GW series.

A Scythe in my Right Hand, You in my Left - This story is… odd, to put it nicely 😂. It’s a good story but it doesn’t make sense in canon at all, so it goes under the “Duo’s weird catholic fever dream” category of the timeline. It also didn’t have anyone from the show work on it, unlike the rest of the media, so it’s not considered canon in that regard and that’s also probably why it doesn’t fit in with the rest of the canon.

Operation Preventor Radio Drama Cassette - It’s a crack scenario revolving around the boys hosting a radio show that takes place sometime after Endless Waltz. Although the boys hosting a radio show is an unlikely scenario 😂, it does have good characterisations and hilarious interactions between the G-pilots.

Mobile Suit Gundam Wing Manga by Koichi Tokita - This is a retelling of GW and contains vastly different scenarios so it’s its own canon. The writers of GW also didn’t work on it so it’s not part of the main canon in that way too.

Mobile Suit Gundam Wing Endless Waltz Manga by Koichi Tokita - The sequel to the Mobile Suit Gundam Manga and the same deal as before where it didn’t have any of the original writers work on it. Although it really doesn't differ from the movie at all so it could also work as concurrent to Endless Waltz movie and novels.

9. Endless Waltz Movie and Novelization: AC 196 December 24- December 27 /Epilogue: AC 197 January 01

The Mariamaia Incident starts on Christmas Eve, exactly one year after the Eve Wars, and ends on December 27. The Epilogue takes place on New Year's Day.

10. Ground Zero Epilogue: AC 197

Turns out the epilogue states that it took place in AC 197 making it take place after Endless Waltz (which also means that Heero gives Relena multiple hand-stitched bears as presents which is where I previously got confused). Heero also promises to stay by Relena's side.

11. Frozen Teardrop Preventor 5 part 1: AC 197 March - AC 197 April 07

March- Heero is staying at the Darlian Estate by this point with Relena tending to his wounds that had accumulated over the series. Relena is planning to run for president of the UESN.

April 07- Relena throws a campaign party on the day after her birthday. Sanc Kingdom is under attack by a terrorist organization. Wufei and Sally gather the Gundam Pilots to carry out a rescue mission.

12. Episode Zero Epilogue: AC 197 April 07

Concurrent with Frozen Teardrop Preventor 5 part 1. Relena throws a campaign party on the day after her birthday. Sanc Kingdom is under attack by a terrorist organization. Wufei and Sally gather the Gundam Pilots to carry out a rescue mission. Quatre devises a plan for them to rescue the hostages without anyone dying, enemies included.

13. Frozen Teardrop Preventor 5 part 2: AC 197 April 09

The new Preventor 5 team carry out the rescue mission. The mission doesn't go as planned and fails. Relena sacrifices herself to save the Sanc Kingdom and is cryogenically frozen. Heero is also frozen sometime later.

14. Frozen Teardrop Light Novel series and Picture Drama: MC 22 Next Winter to MC 23 First Spring

20 years later Heero Yuy awakens to fight a new war on Mars along with the old and new Gundam Pilots.

There's a full timeline for the events leading up to current day Frozen Teardrop that I will translate as a part 2 for this post. It covers all the backstories as well as important historical events of Mars.

15. Frozen Teardrop Epilogue: MC 23 First Summer.

Heero and Relena have been married for 5 months and peace is slowly coming to Mars.

I looked over all my manga and light novels to check dates so hopefully this is all accurate. It all surprisingly fits in nicely too, so I guess the writers were careful not to contradict each other's extra stories.

Content that doesn't fit on the timeline or is contradictory to canon:

Glory of the Losers - This is a reboot, so it has its own timeline and canon with different versions of events from the GW series.

A Scythe in my Right Hand, You in my Left - This story is... odd, to put it nicely 😂. It's a good story but it doesn't make sense in canon at all, so it goes under the "Duo's weird catholic fever dream" category of the timeline. It also didn't have anyone from the show work on it, unlike the rest of the media, so it's not considered canon in that regard and that's also probably why it doesn't fit in with the rest of the canon.

Operation Preventor Radio Drama Cassete - It's a crack scenario revolving around the boys hosting a radio show that takes place some time after Endless Waltz. Although the boys hosting a radio show is an unlikely scenario 😂, it does have good characterisations and hilarious interactions between the G-pilots.

Edit because I forgot to add these:

Mobile Suit Gundam Wing Manga by Koichi Tokita - This is a retelling of GW and contains vastly different scenarios so it's its own canon. The writers of GW also didn't work on it so it's not part of the main canon in that way too.

Mobile Suit Gundam Wing Endless Waltz Manga by Koichi Tokita - The sequel to the Mobile Suit Gundam Manga and the same deal as before where it didn't have any of the original writers work on it.
