Pride Month Movie 4: Bruised

Halle Berry both directed and starred in this 2020 martial arts film, and that woman put herself through Hell. Not only in the emotional wreckage that an abusive relationship, losing her son, failing at her career and being a survivor of child abuse makes of her character, but also the very long fight scenes with actual mixed martial artist Valentina Shevchenko! I hope she thinks it was worth it; I definitely think it was worth it.

I do wish their had been more of her romantic relationship with her trainer Bobbi (Sheila Atim), but what there is is so good. Bobbi is an amazing character in her own right, and I definitely need to see more of Atim's work. The ending is not quite what I was expecting, so I don't want to give it away, but I will say that it was better than what I thought it would be!

Also, as an aside, there is a child who is rendered mute after seeing a close family member killed, and the film is actually respectful of his trauma and his healing is presented far more organically than other stories about traumatized mute children (cough, The Patriot, cough cough!) That was very refreshing.
