Bobby sits on an unfamiliar brown couch in an unfamiliar living room, staring at unfamiliar photos of very familiar people. There is, of course, a photo of him that he was alive to have taken, standing on the mantle. That one he knows, though he doesn’t remember it being taken. It’s the whole 118, at one festivity or another, with Bobby in the middle. But there are more. Wedding photos. Josie’s baby photos. Christopher’s graduation photos. So many milestones and happy memories. Christopher and Buck making goofy faces in front of the Golden Gate Bridge. Bobby feels a deep nostalgia for things he wasn’t alive to see. 

“We need to call Athena,” Eddie says. “That’s the first order of business. The longer we wait, the angrier she’ll be with us.”

Bobby blinks, trying to picture what she must look like now. He’s spent the past few minutes scarfing down leftover casserole that Buck had cooked the night before and drinking three glasses of water. He feels semi catatonic now. Eddie handed him a mug of coffee made the way he used to drink it, and Bobby stared at it for a full minute before really processing the fact that he even remembered. 

“I think we should call Harry first,” Buck says.

Harry. Buck had said Harry was around. Closer to thirty to twenty now. Bobby never even saw that birthday. 

“Why?” Eddie asks. “I mean, we can call him after.”

“I think the call to Athena should come from Harry,” Buck explains. “I’m worried about Athena taking the news, honestly. Neither of us did well.”

He’s never been on bad terms with Chimney. Not for a moment. They’re good friends. But he and Maddie have kept a cordial distance nevertheless. And he gets it! She is loyal to her brother. There was a lot of hurt on both sides there. He wouldn’t blame Maddie if she was skeptical of Eddie now.  

Fortunately for Eddie, everyone is warm and welcoming if not somewhat mocking. 

“And the award for shocking romantic revelation of the century goes to…” Chim does a fake drum roll on Bobby’s counter when he sees Buck and Eddie walk in together. 

Eddie blushes. Buck rolls his eyes.

Bobby flashes Chim a warning look. 

“What did I say?”

Chim raises his hands in surrender. 

“UNCLE CHIM! AUNTIE MADDIE!” Penny squeals, derailing the teasing. At least for a little while. 

She runs forward and Maddie bends to hug her.

“Hi, baby girl!” Maddie exclaims. “I missed you so much!”

“Where’s Jee-Yun?” She asks. 

“In the yard playing,” Maddie says. “Do you want to go see her? She’s so excited you’re going to be here for Christmas.”

“Well, what else could it be, Eddie?” Chim asks. “The crows are following him! I saw crows the day of that psychic call.”

“The con artist?” Eddie asks flatly.

“Maybe not,” Chim frowns.

“Hey,” Buck looks alarmed. “What she said wasn’t right. She was… She was awful.”

“But she wasn’t entirely wrong,” Chim says. “You did take my place that night. And now all this… She also said we’d see her again.”

“You guys have lost your minds,” Eddie sighs. 

“It’s a family thing,” Chim warns. “Keep dating him and your brain will also turn to mush, Diaz.”

Buck heaves a sigh. “Chim, man…”

“Congrats, by the way,” Chim adds. “Really am happy for you.”

Eddie smirks. “Thanks, Chim.”

“Now back to these crows,” Chim says. “What brought them on?”

“I’m telling you!” Buck exclaims. “They came out of nowhere!”

Crows remain the topic of conversation until they get their first call.

Eddie blinks at the declaration. 

“Jee,” Buck says. “Hey, honey. Why don’t you stick around a bit?”

“No! I don’t want to!” She doubles down. 

She stands up, then marches out of the dining room. 

Buck stands, readjusting the baby in his arms and sighing. “Let me go get Maddie.”

“I’ll go after her,” Eddie decides, standing. 

“Are you sure?” Buck frowns. “She finally likes you.”

“Yeah,” Eddie nods. “I think I’ve got this one.”

“Godspeed,” Buck says. 

Eddie nods, then walks off in the direction Jee went. He follows her down the hallway, just in time to catch her trying to slam her bedroom door for dramatic effect. It’s an old house, though. The doors are heavy. She’s a tiny girl. It doesn’t quite slam as much as slowly swing shut, giving Eddie enough time to hurry forward and catch it.

“Hey, Jee,” Eddie says. “Can we talk?” 

“No,” she frowns. “I’m going to my room.”

“I can see that,” Eddie replies. “To be alone.”
