I think one thing both film and book Hiccup have in common is that in a modern AU, both of them would love nothing more than to host a Steve Irwin-type show where they teach you about the local wildlife and wrangle giant reptiles. (In a modern half-brothers AU it'd probably be something a bit more like the Kratt Brothers' Be the Creature)
Who knows! In a modern AU they might even be able to!

Is Snotlout Really Hiccup's Cousin? (HTTYD)
Tumblr media
Hello, my fellow Furians! Today, I have another Snotlout article after a long while. We will dive into this simple question:
Are Snotlout and Hiccup REALLY cousins in the Film Franchise?
The short answer is: NO, they're not.
But you're obviously here for the LONG answer, so let me list several reasons why they are not cousins in the film franchise:
One: in the Books, they were paternal cousins, and they don't even have the same surname in the films.
Two: they have never called each other cousins ONCE in the entire franchise. Not even once.
Three: DeBlois and the HTTYD Team, nor the actors, have ever mentioned, hinted, implied, stated, revealed, or proved that they were cousins.
Four: in the movie franchise, they have an enemies-to-friends relationship, rather than a familial one.
Five: If they were related by ANY stretch of the imagination, Snotlout would've competed for the title of Heir like in the Books, but he doesn't. He's simply pressured by Spitelout, his father, to best Hiccup so that his father can one-up Stoick (and so that he can fulfill his father's warped expectations of what a Jorgenson is).
Six: Snotlout is better at everything than Hiccup in the Books (aside from speaking Dragonese and is even at sword-fighting once Hiccup uses his left hand), while Hiccup trounces Snotlout in several things.
So yeah, they're not cousins. Of course, if I somehow missed something, please inform me if I am incorrect.
Tumblr media
Of course, this doesn't stop people from automatically labeling him as Hiccup's cousin, simply because he was in the Books, and it's just easier to implement it in the story.
Heck, I've seen plenty of people who have them be maternal cousins instead of paternal cousins, hence the different surnames. Though bear in mind that, historically, Vikings were named by who their parents were (i.e. Ragnar Ragnarsson, Thor Bjarnson, Asgeirrsdottir, and in rare cases maternal names like Astridsson/Astridsdottir).
My Headcanon
Personally, though, I'm of the opinion that Book Snotlout and Movie Snotlout are two different characters despite their similarities.
As such, I have Snotlout and Hiccup be just good friends.
Snotlout got his name from Snotface Snotlout Haddock's middle name since Spitelout wanted Snotlout to be just like Snotface, whom he thought would replace Hiccup as the Heir. Snotlout admires him for being like the Great Viking Heroes and follows him and wants to be like him whenever he can. He often has to decide whether to follow Snotface or Hiccup — especially after Hiccup defeats the Red Death. And as time passes, it gets harder for him to choose.
Until one day, Snotlout decides to be his own man, without being influenced or pressured by his father or by Snotface, or even by Hiccup. He will stand on his own to feet and learn what path he wants to take and what man he wants to become.
See? EXCELLENT character development, if I do say so myself! 😁
What do you guys think? How do you view Hiccup and Snotlout's relationship, and how do you implement it in your headcanon?
Thank you for reading.
Long Live the Night!

I think you'd really like the book series ngl, but I will say it is WAY different from the movies. Not in a bad way, I'd honestly just say that the stories are so wildly different that "based on the book series by Cressida Cowell" is more accurate than claiming it's an adaptation. Because. It is so very very different in terms of lore and tone and themes. Both are incredible stories but man it's just. Different.
I'm sure I would! I have heard amazing things about rhe book series, and I do intend on reading them one day! It's really interesting to see parallels between the book/film universe

As we know from DOB's "Fright of Passage," her family's honor was scuttled when the Frightmare froze her Uncle Finn before presumedly killing him (since we never see him at all in the franchise), thus fueling her feud and insatiable hunger for vengeance against the dragon. As a result, even if she had a crush on him, like, say, when they were kids, any friendship or crushes she may have had with him would've been cut off the moment she obsessively started training. HTTYD 1 and Fright of Passage does an excellent job implying how powerful her obsession was in training to become the best Viking in the dragon training program, and why she got so mad when Hiccup won. Such was her obsession that whatever connections she had with the other Vikings, particularly with her peer group, was almost zilch and only interacted and cooperated when necessary.
All this to say that, naturally, Astrid's not going to show any signs of attraction towards Hiccup. Her family and regaining their honor is MUCH more important than flirting with some adolescent teenage boy. Even if Hiccup was a buff Viking with a lot of success, the furthest she'd do is both respect him and see him as a rival. As far as she's concerned, her only goal in life — and the sole reason for her existence — is to purge the arch-nemesis and bane of the Hoffersons'. She's willing to lose limbs, become crippled, or even losing her life — just so long as she's able to bring down the Flightmare and regain her family's honor, she doesn't care what or how much she sacrifices. (Meanwhile her parents are subtly praying that she loses her kamikaze phase, and quickly!)
Sorry, Hiccup, but I'm with Astrid. If I was her, I wouldn't be interested either and just focus on helping my family.
Honor and leaving behind a legacy is everything to a Viking. If you lose that, you might as well wish that you've never been born. Losing family prestige would risk a lot of things: financially, spiritually, politically, socially. Heck, even marriage is in danger, at this point. Not just for her, mind (since she doesn't care about it at this point in time), but for most members of her family who are still unmarried. Nobody's gonna want to marry into a family who's shamed themselves so disgracefully. And they're probably also not financially sound either due to the dragon raids. So Astrid just wants to hurry and get it done so that her family can resume their prosperous life of glory and renown.
I'll be honest, I had very little sympathy for Hiccup. He's a wimp who can barely do anything, and has the audacity to flirt with his crush when he's literally in a life-or-death class lesson on how to fight dragons. He almost died several times. Like, seriously. Hiccup in the Books was NEVER that stupid. Granted, he was 10 and not 14/15, and was in worse conditions than Movie Hiccup could even DREAM of, but still.
(And thus, my bias towards Book Hiccup shows. lol šŸ˜‚)
Thank you very much for your analysis. I always enjoy reading them! 🄰
Hey. What are your thoughts on the whole idea that Astrid had a crush on Hiccup at the beginning of the first movie? That's not even my personal headcanon, but I know that some people think that...
I have seen the arguments for it, too, and some of them are pretty well-supported. I think they are cool and fun to read. One common thing I have seen people point out is that Astrid watches Hiccup closely throughout the entire movie even before the two of them ever have a friendly conversation. Her facial expression sometimes seems hurt or sympathetic as she watches lonely Hiccup trudge away.
Tumblr media
I do not hold the headcanon she has a crush on him at the beginning of the movie, though. I think she feels sorry for him at times. She is curious and baffled about what he is doing. There is the potential for the crush to develop. But that does not mean she loves him yet. Individuals can be sympathetic, concerned, and curious about another without being in love.
In the second half of HTTYD 1, Astrid is someone who does not do a great job showing love when she hits Hiccup or yanks him into a kiss. She is young and still figuring out how to interact with a crush. However, it is obvious that she is in love with Hiccup toward the second half of the movie. It is also obvious when she is determined, angry, upset, or bored i the first half of the movie. Astrid does not seem to hugely hide her emotions. What emotions she shows on her face and what she says aloud are pretty straightforward. This is consistent with all of HTTYD 1, Riders of Berk, Defenders of Berk, Gift of the Night Fury, Dawn of the Dragon Racers, and HTTYD 2. If Astrid feels an emotion, she shows it, and we can tell what it is without too much effort.
I think if she loved Hiccup at the start of HTTYD 1, we would see more signs of it. They could be small, maybe easy to miss, but they would exist. We would see subtle glances when they are in the same vicinity. Instead, at least as far as I heard her body language, she seems genuinely disinterested in him. When Hiccup says, ā€œIt’s just the two of us,ā€ in Dragon Training when they fight their first Gronckle, she seems to genuinely dismiss him. This is not avoiding a crush due to awkwardness or being unable to handle her emotions around him (after all, young crushes can lead to people avoiding the person of interest from inner nervousness, not knowing how to act, etc.). But Astrid does not seem to be hiding anything in that response. She stares intently but not too intently at Gronckle… so she’s just focused on the task at hand, and that’s what’s important to her.
The stupid teenaged boy trying to flirt with her is not what’s interesting. In fact, she treats both Snotlout and Hiccup the exact same way in the Kill Ring when they hit on her. They try to schmooze, she pays attention to the Gronckle, and bounds away from them. Astrid never has a crush on Snotlout. And she treats Hiccup as she does Snotlout here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She’s even got the exact same face.
There is zero evidence at all here she regards Hiccup differently.
But man both of those infatuated boys’ faces are adorable.
Later, she does not seem to hide anything when she pushes the Dragon Manual toward Hiccup, announces, ā€œRead it,ā€ and walks away. I think this is genuine disinterest in his company, not a girl who does not know how to either handle or show her crush.
She sympathizes with him and casts sad glances at him at the start of the movie when others treat him poorly, but she’s not interested in being with him.
The love comes later. Interest itself develops later. Her curiosity grows in ā€œSee You Tomorrow,ā€ and that’s the first time Astrid seems to look at him with more than either anger or pity. I still would not call this a crush here, but I would definitely state that it’s an important development of how she feels toward him.
The crush is most undeniably consciously cognized later, whenever it actually develops. It trickles in - a little during ā€œRomantic Flight,ā€ though that scene is MUCH more about her appreciating Toothless and the dragons than Hiccup - and then, like lots of crushes, the emotions hit her all at once. The seeds of potentiality suddenly burst, and what we get is a crush emerging in the Cove scene. She realizes she loves Hiccup that night when he admirably says he will stand up to protect Toothless. And it is at that moment that she punches… and then kisses… him.
Tumblr media
She plays with her hair a bit between punching and kissing him. She sort of successfully hides her crush when she hits him (which could support the ā€œlong loveā€ argument, maybe), but she fiddles with her hair before kissing Hiccup. Astrid shows her heart. She is a little cumbersome about it and it leaks out without her realizing it. I think more would have leaked out sooner in subconscious hair touches or the like had she been in love sooner. It’s not just the fact she’s suddenly expressing her love to Hiccup after hiding it that makes her do the gesture. It’s simply her dealing with loving him now.
There’s one last moment I want to bring up: a hysterical but revealing deleted scene called ā€œAxe to Grindā€. Hiccup could be wrong saying, ā€œAstrid wouldn’t come near me if she was on fire and I had the only bucket of water in town.ā€ People often misperceive what their crushes think of them. But Astrid appears completely unamused with Hiccup when she realizes this scrawny apprentice is going to be working on her axe. Look at how she sizes him up at the start - she is reluctant to even give him the axe, clearly finding him wanting. That is not exactly the sort of action expected for someone holding a crush - regardless of whether or not she was trying to hide it. I don’t think she’s hiding it. She just doesn’t have the feelings yet and actually thinks Hiccup is a bit pathetic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Astrid also seems disinterested in Hiccup for much of the conversation. She is a little interested when he talks about the Night Fury, but she seems skeptical about Hiccup’s war machine designs. She outright throws one blueprintn away when she finds out it’s not like an axe where she can hold it. It’s out of her fighting style, it’s out of her interests, and Hiccup scores no points there. Her talk is at least casual, but it’s pretty filler, too. She WILL come near to Hiccup even without being on fire, and she doesn’t hate him at the start of the film (she’s not even angry with hi because he has not shown his stuff at Dragon Training), but I don’t think she considers him something special.
Dean DeBlois’ comment about Hiccup being in love with Astrid at the start of it also makes it sound one-sided, in my viewpoint.
But here’s the one area I really wish were animated because it could actually destroy my entire argument and throw this analysis out of business. Is that another bang brush she does in 4:43? That… that could definitely mean something.
I won’t deny it.
Tadaaaaaa, I am revealing the weakest point of my argument!
As I see it, at least, her interest in Hiccup is piqued when he rebalances the axe. And that could and does lead to the development of a crush after many more events. I don’t think it’s a crush yet, though. It’s a seed. And it’s very, very, very much a non-growing seed for much of the movie. In other events, that seed might never have been watered and she never would have loved him. People who briefly feel a little interest or attraction to another person do not necessarily develop a crush on that individual, after all, but could lose interest in the next three days.Ā But as it turns out, Astrid did end up falling in love.
And it works so well out for the two of them I have no doubts whatsoever they’re going to get married.
All in all, I can wholly understand where the arguments for her loving Hiccup the entire time come from, and I have no problem at all with people thinking that. This is just my standing on the issue. Astrid’s interest and feelings of Hiccup develop throughout HTTYD 1, but her emotions are not internally strong or clear enough until halfway through the movie for me to define them as a crush. Astrid falls in love with Hiccup later in the movie - not when HTTYD 1 begins.

The Use of Dragonskins (HTTYD/RTTE)
Tumblr media
Hello, my fellow Furians! Welcome to another article! Today, we'll be talking about dragonskins and their usage.
In the HTTYD books, dragonskins are used to make fireproof items and are even commonly used to make fireproof suits. It's also meant to be worn as a type of body armor. Either it can refute arrows or cuts, or it was used to defend against dragon fire (since in this world, Vikings used dragons as hunting companions and steeds of war like how one uses horses and dogs). According to "How To Twist A Dragon's Tale", the Lava-Lout Tribe were particularly famous and distinctive for always wearing dragonskin suits to protect them from fire and heat, since they live on a volcanic island.
In the TV series, it's quite different. There are no scenes that provide evidence that dragonskin have anti-fire properties. At best, Eruptadon saliva does that. While Buffalord saliva is the only known cure for Odin's Scourge. However, it's also true that there hasn't been any evidence AGAINST the dragonskins used by the Dragon Hunters and Flyers having anti-fire properties. Considering their occupations, it's logical to assume that the dragonskins they wear provide some if not complete protection against fire.
Interestingly, though, in the last two films, HTTYD 2 and HTTYD 3, there are clear signs of dragon scales and dragonskins being used as direct fire protection agents.
Also, the dragonskin gear that Dragon Hunters and Flyers wear must have anti-dragon protection since they keep returning in following episodes like Stormtroopers. Though that could just be your typical DreamWorks Dragons cloning technique. šŸ˜‚
That being said, though, it kinda defeats the purpose of fire protection if most of your skin and flammable clothes are exposed to flame. šŸ˜‚
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, unlike in the books, in the TV series (and in the films), dragonskins also have another purpose: a statement of status and fashion.
Aside from the fact that they look aesthetically pleasing to wear, it's also a show of one's prowess and status as a man and as a warrior. As Hiccup had even said in the first film:
"Killing dragons is everything around here. A Nadder head is sure to get me at least noticed. Gronckles are tough. Taking down one of those would definitely get me a girlfriend. A Zippleback? Exotic. Two heads, twice the status. Then, there's the Monstrous Nightmare. Only the best Vikings go after those."
As such, in Archipelagoan society, even if we discount differences between the Inner Isles and the rest of the Archipelago, there is a hierarchy or meritocracy that is based on what dragons you kill, and how many of them. And it's also based on how difficult these dragons are to kill. Speaking of which, Mildew was mentioned to have been an excellent dragon slayer in his younger days.
In fact, the "Deadly Dozen" who pursue and hunt the Gang in S5's "Dawn of Destruction" and the two-part "Wings of War" episodes are all wearing dragonskins from these dragons, signifying their status and prowess as elites.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hiccup goes on to saying this:
"No one has ever killed a Night Fury. That's why I'm going to be the first."
Night Furies were considered by many to be the ultimate prey — the coveted prize to fame, glory, and fortune. While no one on Berk had ever seen a Night Fury let alone slain one, Hiccup was desperate to kill one in order to be accepted as a Viking like the rest of his community. (Only for him to wimp out in the end and become friends with one. lol šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‰) Had he gone through with it, he would've had a luxurious dragonskin that would've boosted his status among the many famous Viking heroes in Archipelago and Berkian history.
Interestingly, in HTTYD 3, Grimmel, the villain, and a contrasting portrayal of what Hiccup could've become, says this:
"When I was a boy and I came up on a Night Fury, I killed it where it slept. That simple act of courage made me a hero in my village."
Strangely though, he doesn't wear anything to show his prowess or achievements. For somebody who boasts about having practically slain every Night Fury in existence (a declaration that I doubt in itself since it's technically impossible in this era), he doesn't wear anything to represent that, like a Night Fury dragonskin cloak, or outfit, or Night Fury claws or teeth. Nothing. Just... boring old leather. šŸ™„
However, it's different with Drago from HTTYD 2. As you can see from the picture below, he's wearing a cloak of dragonskin which he uses as both a status statement and also as something to shield him from dragonfire.
Tumblr media
Of course, as much as I'd like to declare that to be Night Fury skin, there's no proof of it being so, and could easily be some other type of dragon. But if it is, it could be the skin of an older Night Fury. It looked darker in the film, but whatever.
So in conclusion, dragonskins are used for their anti-fire properties (to protect them from dragonfire and from fire in general), as a fashion statement, and most importantly as a status symbol that showcases their prowess and accomplishments as warriors. Dragonskins make good tent material, apparently, as evidenced by the Dragon Hunters.
I hope this was somewhat enlightening. It certainly was for me. Thank you for reading, and see you in the next article!
