Tumblr media
Create your HabitAware account to become a habit alert. You must first create an account with the app by entering your email address, first and last name, and a password that consists of at least eight characters—one uppercase, one lowercase, and one symbol—after opening it. After that, you'll get an email with a special code that you can use to validate your account and download the app!

I just got this sweet, little thing in the mail! This is Keen from HabitAware - designed to bring awareness to behaviors like nail-biting, skin-picking, and hair-pulling (and that includes eyebrows, eyelashes, etc.)
For someone like me, who’s been pulling out eyelashes for a long time (like more than 10 years now), this is seriously exciting. This could be the last push i need to breaking the flippin cycle. And I’m so happy that BFRB’s (body focused repetitive behaviors) are getting more and more awareness each year. hope it continues
This bracelet was easy to figure out. It takes a minute to train with the habit aware app, and that’s it. It gives a little buzz whenever it catches you. I’ve kinda had fun testing it out a bunch of times haha
Well, this is just the beginning, so we’ll see how this goes!

hey! i'm a 14 year old with a form of dermatillomania and some trichotillomania (i split my split ends.) i heard of this thing called HabitAware thats basically a bracelet that vibrates when it thinks you're picking so you can be aware of it. do you think this works? and if any followers have tried it, what do you think?
I have it and love it! It does take some getting used to, though.

Hey i just can't stop picking my skin because it's been almost ten years now (since i've had acne, which i still have now 😑) and it's as natural for me as breathing... i'm just desperate... i can't stand watching myself anymore. Do you or your followers have a trick that *really* works ? At least similar acne x dermatillo issues ?😕 (think it's pretty clear but ok to post publicly)
If there was a trick that really worked this thing would last months instead of lifetimes. BFRBs are different for everyone, so what helps for one person might not help for everybody. If you can front it, try seeing a cognitive behavioral therapist. They might be able to help find your triggers and offer healthier coping mechanisms. Also, habitaware is a pretty neat bracelet that vibrates when you try to pick (works best for face picking and hair pulling in my experience). You are beautiful. Best of luck. 😘💚💙

because like.. what do I do when i dont understand or empathize? i just nod my head and encourage bc even if its not directly relating to me.. if someone shares what they like and makes them happy you just... encourage them
i like working for craig because it makes him happy. it makes me happy to support his dream because he put so much effort in as a teacher to connect with students and to challenge them and so many people gave so little in return.
i liked working for she she because it felt tangible. i liked that my art was turning into something physical. i liked working for two women that i could see myself in, a little dorky, a little alternative, a little preppy.
i like working for habitaware because its substantial work, however hard it is to articulate and however little i have faith in the company to grow at its current rate. but its a box of untapped potential and i want to get playing. so even if my boss is like mm dont pursue this. im gonna lol
i like drawing anime characters bc theyre fun. i probably like projecting. idk.

What are your thoughts on Habit Aware? What are your thoughts on Slightly Robot? Do any of the people on the team have one of these and what is their experience?
Although I haven’t personally tried the HabitAware device, I do know people who have them and swear by them. It is a tool that many people have had success with and I am definitely a proponent of the idea that you should leave no stone unturned in your journey to recovery. If you think that having a discrete notification of when you are about to engage in your BFRB or you would like to have a device that helps you track patterns then the HabitAware might be for you!

BFRB Challenge: Day 5
What treatments have you tried?
Meds: I’ve been on Prozac since I was 14. It didn’t really help the pulling, but now (at age 23) it really helps with my depression. The only other med I’ve tried is luvox, which was horrible.
Therapy: I did hypnotherapy for a bit. I didn’t mind it, but I don’t it really helped. Then again, I never practiced the exercises outside of our sessions. I was also only 15. I also did habit-reversal therapy (HRT) with someone who did the TLC training course. This helped a lot, since it was for trichotillomania specifically. Unfortunately I had to stop, due to money issues and time (it was over an hour drive just to get there). I’m now in CBT, but for my personality disorder.
Hair styles and Products: Using products that soften my hair help a lot. The softer my hair, the less I’ll pull. I’ll also sometimes put hair oil in my dry hair when I notice I’m pulling, so it’s harder to grip the hair. Looking at awesome hair styles helps motivate me a bit, too. Also, sometimes I put a beanie over my head to create a barrier.
Using stim toys/fiddle toys: I have a bunch and love using them!
Vitamins: NAC helps me a shit ton. I take two pills (1200mg) in the morning, then usually two more around lunch time, Most of the time I have no urges while on NAC.
Technology: I now have a HabitAware band! It looks like a fitbit, and when I go to pull, it vibrates!

So, I definitely have Trich (maybe derma? Nor sure how that's classified), but I've never really known what to DO about it. Wearing a hat helps, but I don't have a hat for every outfit, and sometimes it would be inappropriate. What do I do???
Hi! So dermatillomania would be classified as skin picking, but in order to get a legitimate diagnosis you would have to see a psychologist/psychiatrist. There are many things you can do for trich/derm. You could seek out therapy (e.g., Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), you could get a hairpiece from Hair Club which you have the option to have surgically glued on your head or a clip in (free if you’re under 18 too), you could take supplements to suppress the urge to pull such as NAC, you could gather a plethora of fidget toys to keep your hands active, or another option would be this new bracelet called HabitAware that syncs to an app on your phone and vibrates every time your hand moves to go pull or pick. I hope these helped! -Sarah
