I just learned about dorm room interior designers and I wanna go fight the fucking ocean.
Tumblr media
Eden Bowen Montgomery, an interior designer whose focus is dorm rooms, designed custom-made fabrics and furniture for students at the University of Mississippi. Andrea Morales for The New York Times
“We’re moving away from Ikea, and getting the opposite of fast furniture,” said Ginger Curtis, the founder of Urbanology Designs, a high-end Dallas-based interior design space that works with students preparing to go to college. She said she can help students on a budget for $7,000 to $8,000, though the costs can grow much higher. Depending on the amount students (or really, their parents) are willing to spend, Ms. Curtis will recommend custom fabrics for the curtains, monogrammed pillows, linens, a couch and coffee table, headboard and dust ruffles; handmade murals or removable wallpaper; luxury light fixtures to replace fluorescent lights; and real wood hutches, shelves and cabinets custom-made to fit the room. When she began her freshman year at the University of Mississippi, where the tuition is $9,400 for in-state students, Lesley Lachman was taken aback by the dorm rooms, which she described as “completely not doable to live-in.”
So this year, Ms. Lachman, 18, joined forces with Essentials with Eden, an interior design company focused on dorm rooms. Ms. Lachman and her roommate spent about $3,000 for the design company to create a modern-looking, New York City-style dorm room with a touch of Southern charm. This included lamps, a custom cabinet, lettering above the bed and curtains in shades of pink, blue and green with gold accents. “I leave my door open with so much pride and confidence,” Ms. Lachman said. Eden Bowen Montgomery, the founder and owner of Essentials with Eden, got the idea for her dorm-focused design company after her freshman year at Ole Miss. By the time she graduated in 2021 with a degree in integrated marketing communications, Ms. Montgomery had already started her business.
This year, she had more than 200 dorm clients, requiring 25 seasonal employees. She charges about $10,000 per room ($5,000 per student) for the full service, which requires Ms. Montgomery and her team to arrive on move-in day and put together the rooms from scratch. Ms. Montgomery charges $100 for the initial consultation where the young women — because it’s almost always young women — go through fabric options and chat about their goals for their dorm room. Most of the students are looking for the custom bedding and drapery, a fancy cabinet to hide the mini-fridge and microwave, wallpaper and a matching headboard.
This elevated dorm room trend started taking off post-Covid, when students realized how important it was for them to be happy and comfortable in their space. TikTok and Instagram enhanced the trend, with students displaying before-and-after pictures of their dorm transformations. Ms. Lachman proudly explains that her dorm TikTok went viral, while Sadie Perkins, an 18-year-old freshman at the University of Alabama, said her designer dorm room, complete with matching desk hutches, pillows, lamps and décor got about 200 “likes” on TikTok. Dawn Thomas, a Mississippi interior designer who is one of the leaders of the high-end dorm room trend, started about 20 years ago when her daughters went to college. Every year, she and her three helpers arrive at the dorms on move-in day to install room after room, each one taking three hours to complete. Ole Miss, which is Ms. Thomas’s alma mater and also one of the most-desired interior dorm room schools, presents some challenges, however. “It’s a two-hour wait to get your stuff into the elevator, so I had my move-in team carry everything up nine flights of stairs,” Ms. Thomas said.
Here's what that $10,00 gets you:
Tumblr media
The overconsumption is just dripping out of this picture. It's just so much money spent on garbage.
I'm literally nauseous right now. I hate this so much. It's wasteful and it's unnecessary. Why are you in college if this is what you're so concerned about?
Go to fucking class.

Built in 1916 as a village shop near Oslo, this awesome house underwent a major renovation by a new owner. “ It was madness!” says Anna. Together with her husband Tom, she realized the dream of a creative life with a shop, café and home in the same house. The decor style in this home is cozy and surprising.
Tumblr media
The colors hold the home together. The pink and blue-green tones reappear on the sofa. But the cat Elsa probably does not notice. (She looks just like my Jub Jub, aka Jubbie.)
Tumblr media
At one end of the living room, is a kitchen. The kitchen cabinet frames were bought second-hand and adapted to the space during the renovation. Dining table and chairs from Eero Saarinen's collection "Tulip" designed in 1956.
Tumblr media
Daughter’s cute pink room gets lots of light with 2 cross windows. Bedding is IKEA.
Tumblr media
The little chair belonged to great-grandma.
Tumblr media
In Son’s room the wood paneling is painted a bluish gray.
Tumblr media
The concrete sink was bought by an online bathroom supplier. The base was bought used, and so was the painted cabinet.
Tumblr media
The bathroom was given both panels and tiles to feel warm and homely. Wall tile is "Pearl." Floor tiles "Portuguese turquoise." But, look at the river rock shower area. I really love that idea- I hate wiping down glass shower enclosures.
Tumblr media
The bathtub, from Victorian Plumbing, is painted in the same tone as the tiles. The scale is a flea market find.
Tumblr media
The master bedroom is next door to the bathroom. Wallpaper "Mobiles Slate," is very retro.
Tumblr media
The garden at the back of the house was tenderly cared for by the elderly lady who previously lived in the house. The handmade fence separates the private part of the garden from the café's outdoor terrace and the country store's backyard.
Tumblr media
Townspeople in the 19th century came the village by boat from Oslo, to spend the summer in their "cabins."

EPISODE 1+2 LIGHT NOVEL Chapter 1-2 English Translation
–– It was a day like any other, around lunchtime. The hustle and bustle of the city outside had quieted for the time being. Rays of pleasant sunshine poured through the windows.
Nick listened to a cat meowing up on the roof and sighed. “So booored…. We’ve got nothing to do, huh, Owl?”
He directed his question to the back of the room. At first glance, there was no one there – Nick’s line of sight contained a veritable mountain of books piled high on a stool, and next to that was a guest sofa buried under a collection of coats and shirts, and beyond that was another pile of thick textbooks heaped on top of a desk, with a one-of-a-kind, exquisitely designed set of balance scales tucked in between the volumes. The room itself was fairly stylish, with its Victorian-style wallpaper and furnishings, but they were spoiled on the current chaotic state of things. The person Nick was addressing, Owl, was somewhere around the desk, hidden by all the paraphernalia stacked on top of it. At least, he probably was.
“Hey, Ooowl.”
“That’s right.”
Nick had gotten a response. So Owl was there… but alas, his presence didn’t magically give them something to do.
Two short taps came from the door, and it swung open with a click, revealing the proprietor of the pub downstairs, Byron. “Hey, you damn strays! What the hell is all this, it looks even worse in here than when you moved in!”
Nick hopped to his feet, excited. “Byyyron! What’s on the menu for today?!” His gaze fixated hungrily on the tray in Byron’s hand.
“Toasted tomato and cheese sandwiches.”
“Yesss!”
“But first, you gotta clean this place up! As the landlord, I can’t let this slide!”
“You got it! I’ll get to cleaning right after I eat!” Nick leapt for the sandwiches, hand outstretched.
“At least give me a proper answer, you – ahh, hey, no! Damn it, stay! Stay!” Byron held the tray of sandwiches over his head, stretching his arm as far as it could go – which was, in point of fact, very far, as he was a towering 185 centimeters tall.
This meant that Nick, who barely hit 165, had no hope of reaching it, though that didn’t stop him from dangling from Byron’s shoulders anyway and thrashing about. “Don’t be so mean!” he whined.
Byron wasn’t phased. “Clean first, then food!”
A new voice cut in. “If we do that, the sandwiches you so painstakingly prepared will go cold. Personally, I think such a travesty would be an insult to your superb cooking.” There was a light tap as the person jumped up and swiped the tray.
“Huh? Damnit, Owl!” By the time Byron managed to turn around and look, the golden-brown sandwich had already disappeared in the mouth of a young man – Owl himself.
“Mm-hmm, excellent as always,” remarked Owl, still chewing. “Your food really is the best. Tomatoes bought fresh from the market this morning, handmade cheese from Madam Meg… pair that with your impeccable technique, and these sandwiches surpass the best dishes of any restaurant in town.”
“Owl, mine too! Gimme my share!”
“Mm, here.”
Nick let go of Byron in a flash and zipped over to Owl, took his sandwich, and stuffed the whole thing in his mouth in one go. “This is so good! You’re the best!”
At the sight of Nick with his mouth full and his thumbs up, Byron let out a massive sigh, shoulders slumping. “You guys really are a pair of strays….” After a moment, though, his spine straightened again and his countenance turned grim as he continued, “You don’t seem to have a care in the world, do you? That means you’ll make your rent this month, right?”
With the sandwich still in his mouth, Owl theatrically shrugged. Then, in a transparent attempt at changing the topic, he picked up a newspaper that had fallen to the floor and murmured, “There are even more reported cases of Black Rose Disease patients, huh….”
A muscle in Byron’s temple twitched. “You know, the only reason I leased this place out to you was because Lord Tristan asked me. I would’ve never given you the time of day otherwise! Think about it for a sec, would ya? Who else would willingly take you in after you got kicked out of your last place ‘cause you didn’t pay the rent?”
“Nick, look at this article. A thief broke into the university.”
“Really? What’d they steal?”
“Listen to me!” Byron was now full-on yelling, but the pair brazenly ignored him. Honestly, shouting at them was like shouting at cats – it was impossible to tell if they were truly listening. Temper fraying, Byron moved to seize them by the collars. “I’m talking to you, goddamnit!”
Nick swallowed his sandwich and finally responded, “It’ll be fine, Byron.”
“Huh?”
“A client will come by soon. Probably.”
“… What? What d’you mean, ‘probably?’ How d’you figure?”
“Mm… gut instinct.”
“Gut instinct?”
Nick shot a brilliant smile at Byron.
“Do you think I’m an idiot?” Unamused, the bartender lunged for Nick’s collar once more.
Before he could grab the younger boy, however, there was a chime from downstairs. It was the door to the pub creaking open, followed by the click-clack of heels and a female voice ringing out. “Excuse me,” she called, “is anyone in? I heard tell that there is a detective agency somewhere nearby – would anyone be able to point me in that direction?”
Nick’s eyes squinted shut in a grin as Byron’s startled gaze flew to the stairs. Owl, in his haste to get up, knocked his chair over, sending all the documents piled in front of him cascading to the floor.
■■■■■■■■■■
“Nice to meet you. My name is Ritz, of Scotland Yard.”
A woman had come calling, and a young one at that. Her eyebrows were sharply raised over a pair of large, striking eyes the color of honey. Her uniform was crisp, with nary a wrinkle in sight. She appeared to be a serious sort, if the tight press of her lips was any indication.
Having given her well-mannered greeting, she picked her way over to the sofa, mindful of the documents and books scattered across the floor, and lowered herself onto the cushions. “I have come today to ask the members of this office to assist our security efforts at the upcoming Westpool Auction,” she said.
“Security… for the auction?” Owl and Nick glanced at each other. Owl continued, “Isn’t that the police’s job? Why go to the trouble of hiring a detective for that?”
Ritz’s gaze darted away for a brief moment before she replied, “The location of the auction is simply too large for the police force to handle adequately.”
“You say that, but the venue has its own security staff as well, doesn’t it?”
“That is correct. However, a large quantity of valuable items will be on the premises, and the police believe that any additional help will be beneficial.”
“So you’ve come to ask a detective, of all people?”
“Yes. We find day laborers to be lacking a certain trustworthiness, but detectives are among the most honorable sort. You would never betray a client’s trust, for instance, would you?”
“Fair enough,” agreed Owl with a nod. “That said, what you’re asking is impossible.”
The Westpool Auction was a famous gathering in their port town that dealt in rare art pieces. That night, it was set to be held at an art museum. The event wasn’t open to the general public, but it was nevertheless a hot topic of discussion thanks to all the rich and elite members of society who were allowed to attend. Put simply, there wasn’t a single person in the whole city who hadn’t heard about it.
Including the fact that the auction was that very night.
“Impossible…?”
“Yeah. The date’s been set for months. You had to have known you’d need to beef up security, and you probably did… so why are you bringing more people on board this late in the game?”
“Th-That’s….” Ritz’s eyes flicked away again.
That sealed the deal for Owl – she was hiding something. “If you’re going to hire a detective, you can’t hide anything from me. Something must have happened today that made you feel like you had to hire me, right?”
Strangely, it wasn’t Ritz who spoke next, but Nick. “You could’ve just said you wanted us to catch Hude Lou,” he said, inclining his head mysteriously.
“What?!” Ritz’s voice shot up. “How did you know about that?! The only ones who know he sent a notice are the police!”
“Oh, really?” Nick leered at the flustered girl.
Ritz’s eyebrows rose. She stiffly stood up from her chair and drew closer to him. “Where did you hear that?!” she demanded. Her eyes burned with justice, promising swift retribution to any officer who had dared leak such information.
Nick wasn’t fazed, though. He simply shrugged and answered, “A cat told me.”
“A cat?”
“Yeah, all the cats around town have been talking about it since this morning. Said the auction venue received a calling card.” Nick pointed out the window at the veranda of a neighboring apartment, where several stray cats basked in the sunlight.
“What?!” Ritz was quick to retort with a fierce scowl. “Do you take me for a fool? You can’t honestly expect me to believe you can understand cats! Kindly quit making fun of the police!”
Her intensity overwhelmed Nick, and he ducked away to hide behind Owl’s chair with a yelp. “I’m not making fun of you, promise!”
“Please forgive my associate,” Owl interjected, casting a quick glance over his shoulder at his friend. “What he said just now was a deduction.”
“A deduction?”
“Yes. A grand event like an auction is probably very attractive for a phantom thief that’s stirred the public up so much. Even my assistant can come to the logical conclusion.” As Owl explained, Nick bared his teeth in a grimace, making himself even smaller behind the chair.
Ritz’s shoulders fell. “Was I really so transparent?” she murmured, disheartened by her perceived blunder.
Owl, however, immediately shook his head. “Detectives are trained to sniff out secrets, that’s all… so you did nothing wrong.”
“Do you… really think so?”
“Yes.”
“Then I suppose there is no need for any more subterfuge. I will speak frankly. However, I must ask that what I am about to say does not leave this room.” Ritz seated herself again. “As you surmised, that despicable phantom thief Hude Lou did indeed send a calling card. Per his missive, he intends to steal the ‘statue of a young girl’ that will be up for auction tonight.”
For a moment, as the thief’s name passed her lips, her expression twisted bitterly. Such a reaction was understandable – the thief had caused the city’s police force untold grief.
Tumblr media
Hude Lou had appeared out of nowhere one day, like the phantom he was.
He was elusive and enigmatic. His background, his lineage, everything about him was a complete mystery. He would send his calling cards seemingly on a whim, appearing like mist to steal treasures in the most bombastic ways and vanishing in the blink of an eye, as ephemeral as a shooting star. To the police, who had garnered heavy criticism since he first appeared, he was a detestable thief.
His most irksome trait, however, was the fact that he had won the public’s support, chiefly because his only targets were nobles and politicians who used their positions of power to crush the disadvantaged under their heels. Pair that with his flashy, colorful heists, and it was no wonder he had so thoroughly captured the hearts of the common folk.
But his popularity was irrelevant; the police simply couldn’t let him be, not with the public labeling them “incompetent” and “inefficient” after so many failed attempts to arrest him.
Ritz squeezed her hands together. She lamented, “If things continue like this, public faith in the police will plummet, and if we lose that, public safety will deteriorate. I absolutely cannot forgive a criminal who has thrown that safety into disarray. I will capture him, no matter what it takes.”
“….” The instant Owl saw the light of justice sparkling in her lovely eyes, he knew he had lost. He faced her straightforward intentions head-on and deeply bowed his head. “I understand. I’ll help,” he said.
Ritz’s gloomy countenance grew bright, as if she’d flipped a switch. “Truly?”
“Yeah.”
“Ah, that’s wonderful! You’re a lifesaver!”
“I’ll do my best to meet your expectations,” said Owl, reaching out to shake her hand.
“Well then, Mr. Owl, please give your support to the other detectives!”
He froze, hand suspended in midair. “… Support?”
“Huh?” Nick poked his head out from behind the couch, also intrigued by her wording. “What do you mean by that?”
“Exactly what I said,” replied Ritz at once. “I intend for you to assist the other detectives we will have at the venue. Detectives all manner of documents and tools to support their deductions, yes? Those arrangements will be your responsibility, as well as other such tasks like preparing meals. We police officers will have our hands full with security, so we will be unable to supervise them at all times –”
“Wait a sec,” Owl interrupted, instantly puzzled. “By ‘helping with security,’ you didn’t mean something like figuring out how the thief would enter the building?”
Ritz’s rebuttal was blunt. “Nothing of the sort! If we were in need of such a deduction, we would simply ask one of the renowned detectives at the other agencies the top brass have already called upon. Surely even a lesser detective like yourself could recognize their names. There’s John Reed, who resolved the Dahlia Train incident, and Professor Thomas G., who solved the death of Legislator Cogit, and Detective Aaron Young, who cracked the case of the Strange Stoneman, and many others besides.”
The lesser detective was silent as Ritz obliviously continued on. “Being able to observe such splendid people from up close is quite an opportunity. I believe it will be a wonderful learning experience for you, Mr. Owl!”
Owl slid in his seat, letting her well-meaning words wash over him.
She hadn’t come here to hire Owl as a detective after all.
When she was finished, an uncomfortable silence hung in the air. For a few seconds, everything was quiet.
 “DEEE-NIED!”
Until Nick’s yell pierced through the silence.
His voice was loud enough to echo through the whole building, so much so that on the first floor, Byron dropped a glass in surprise, though he was just quick enough to grab it again before it shattered on the floor.
“Wh-What the –?” What was all the commotion? He was just moving to peek upstairs when there was a loud BANG, followed swiftly by footsteps pounding on the stairs. Nick and Ritz came barreling down, seemingly chasing each other, and Byron was sent stumbling backwards to avoid them. His legs banged into a nearby table, causing him to collapse in a pained heap.
“No way, no how, no nothing! Absolutely NOT!”
“Wh-What’s with you? What do you mean ‘no’?!”
“We don’t take requests from people who treat Owl like some kinda dummy! So see ya, never wanna be ya!”
“What on Earth are you talking about?! He already said he would! Why are you so upset?!”
“Who wouldn’t be after hearing his partner being treated like that?!”
Around and around they went, chasing each other all through the shop. Byron watched the two in silence for a bit, rubbing his bruised shins. However, as soon as he heard Owl coming down the stairs as well calling, “Oi, Nick, calm down!” he grabbed the boy by his collar, stopping him in his tracks.
“Lemme go, Byron!”
Nick wriggled like a freshly caught fish, but he was no match for Byron, who kept a firm grip under his arms. “Like hell I will,” he replied. “It’s not like you to scream your head off at a lady. What happened?”
“That boy flew into a rage out of nowhere!” Ritz called, having hidden herself behind Owl. “I haven’t the faintest idea why!”
“Of course I’d get mad! You useless police lady!”
“U-Useless… ? A-Are you referring to me?! I won’t stand for such insults!”
“You started it!”
Byron was getting nowhere with the furious duo. He turned his gaze to Owl instead. “What happened?”
“She ignited his fiery passion for his business partner.”
The roundabout answer only served to confuse Byron further – one could almost see the question mark pop up over his head.
“You don’t know how great of a detective Owl is! Don’t lump him in with those other amateurs! So thanks for stopping by, there’s the exit, see you never!” Nick jabbed his finger at the door even while held fast by Byron.
“O-Of course I – I mean, you’re –" Ritz stuttered for a moment, glancing up at Owl. It was awkward, having to say this while hiding behind the person in question, but she persevered and plainly spoke her mind. “You’re so young, a-and unknown!”
“You’re not wrong,” Owl agreed, not a trace of anger in his tone or countenance. It was true, after all – he was unknown.
“And he can’t pay his rent,” added Byron.
Owl walked up to the bartender, Ritz sticking to him like a shadow. He patted Nick on the head. “As a detective, I’m currently the lowest of the low on the ladder. I can’t deny that.”
Nick was still sulky, but Owl’s touch calmed him to the point where he stopped struggling in Byron’s grasp. “You’re not the lowest, not even close! You’re an amazing detective!”
“I’m glad to hear that. I hope to someday be every bit the detective you think I am, Nick. So please, help me out this time?”
“Of course I’m gonna help.” Nick glanced at Ritz, lip curled in a menacing growl like a feral cat. “But I’m not lifting a finger for those other guys! Absolutely not! No way! I refuse!”
Owl bent down to stare Nick full in the face. He whispered in the boy’s ear, “Then how about you pretend to help them but actually lead them on a wild goose chase? How’s that?”
Nick jolted. “… String ‘em along, you mean?”
“Exactly. Instead of them using us, we’ll use them. Wouldn’t that be fun?”
“Us using them….”
“You’re the best assistant and information broker I know. What if you were to… find out what they know and pass it along?”
“!!!”
The corners of Owl’s mouth ticked up in a tiny smile, his violet eyes sparkling suggestively behind his monocle. He no longer looked like an adult; this was the face of a seventeen-year-old conspiring with his friend.
Nick saw that Owl… and mirrored his smile. “So it’ll be a chance to show my stuff?”
“Exactly. You’re the only one who can pull it off.”
“Fine by me.”
“You’re in?”
“I’m in!”
“Then that’s that.” Owl stood back up to his full height and gestured to the stairs. “Go grab my coat for me. We’re going to the venue.”
“Yessir!” Byron finally released Nick, who raced up the steps as soon as his feet touched the floor.
“… So you will help us?”
Ritz, who had been observing the sequence of events from behind Owl, spoke up with a faint look of surprise on her face. Owl replied easily, “Of course.”
“Even though you were so furious?”
“Nick was the only one who was mad. Personally, I see it as a chance to forge some good connections with the other detectives, and I’d rather not lose a chance to see Hude Lou in person. I don’t have a reason to refuse.”
“I-Is that so… that’s a relief….”
Ritz finally relaxed a little. Owl shrugged, commenting, “Must be tough, being a police officer in training.”
“Indeed.” Ritz was vaguely startled, being referred to as “in training” … but then, with a uniform so clearly brand-new and without rank, there was no use denying it. With a certain stiffness to her words, she said, “So you knew, then…. You may be an unknown detective, but I am merely an apprentice – I am no one to act conceited. I sincerely apologize for my rudeness earlier.”
“It’s fine.”
“… Truthfully, my superior was the one who foisted the task of asking you to assist onto me. But I – I truly wish to be a member of the police, no matter what, so…. And it was Father Clemens who so kindly pointed me in your direction.”
“Father Clemens? You know him?”
“Yes, he volunteers as the prison chaplain.”
“I see,” Owl muttered to himself, “so he’s the one who told you….”
Nick suddenly burst back down the stairs, shouting, “I brought your coat!” He had also made his own preparations, having come back down with a sizable bag slung over his shoulder. The coat in his hands was caramel-colored, and as Owl slipped it on a sun insignia revealed itself stamped on the back.
Owl straightened the tartan-check collar, then headed for the door, telling Byron as he went, “We’ll be leaving, then.”
“Let’s go!” Nick and Ritz trailed after him.
“Work hard for your rent money!” Byron called after them.
The bartender watched their retreating figures for a little while, but the sound of a stray cat meowing on the roof soon caught his attention and he glanced up.
“What the…?”
The sunny sky above was turning gray. Storm clouds were gathering. Completely normal… and yet Byron’s eyebrows rose as a sense of foreboding struck him.
“… I’ve got a bad feeling about this.”
He returned inside, slamming the door shut, trying to shake off the discomfort prickling along his skin.

a3! as part-timers
I FINALLY FINISHED IT AGAIN. Thank you all for being patient with me because I really liked these headcanons and Tumblr just decided to delete them all <3
WARNING: rookie Chikage Utsuki will be included! (this means spoilers for Act 5 are present throughout).
Tumblr media
It's canon that Sakuya works with Misumi, but I have no clue as to what their jobs are. Let's safely assume that Sakuya works at a cafe! His bright disposition and cheerful smile is bound to put a smile on customer's face, but he's a little clumsy when it comes to making drinks so his co-workers always tell him to stick to the cash register. It suits him anyways, being able to talk to different people of different walks of life. He mostly works in the mornings, only after he manages to get Masumi to school on time. He is a customer favourite no doubt, and he brings in a lot of tips for all of the workers to share! Many of the children that come by love him, and especially teachers who are running late to work deem him the sunshine in their life.
Masumi would work at a music shop. Not to be obvious or anything, but music is possibly one of the only constants in his life and he grew a deep bond with it while staying alone at home for most of his life. So when he manages to get a job at shop in inside Veludo Mall, he's ecstatic. Although he gets to spend less time in the dorm (which means less time with the Director), Masumi absolutely loves perusing the endless aisles of music cds, vinyl records, posters, and so much more. He's also very diligent at his job, organizing things perfectly and on time and even helping out customers even though he doesn't really want to. His coworkers grow so fond of him to the point that they let him listen to his own music while doing his job, headphones on while he reorganizes things on the shelves.
I don't really know what part-time job Citron would have, but I know he hangs around the Veludo markets a lot. He's there all the time, helping out the lovely ladies at their food stalls by actively advertising their products of the day and even charming young couples into buying some trinkets at another stall. His charm is very effective, smile so dazzling and eyes so hypnotizing that you can't help but follow him towards a stall where they're selling handmade mochi or fresh produce. This is all volunteering though, Citron doesn't get paid with money. What he does get paid with is lots of hugs and groceries to bring home to the dorm-- much to the delight of Izumi and Omi! Citron's so popular at the markets that he receives a greeting from every single stall while he passes by. And he never leaves empty handed!
Tsuzuru tends to boast about the countless number of part-time jobs he's had. From gas station worker, to waiter, to library work, he has done a lot of things. I don't really think it's something to brag about because if I had that many jobs I would probably d-word. But working at Mankai as a playwright, that's already his dream come true. I don't think he'd want to work anywhere else when he's writing stories and bringing them to life like he has always wanted and it makes me happy to see that he's living out his dream. If anything, if he does work a part-time job, it's probably to get extra money to spend on his younger and older brothers since he's such a family man. And because his stories bring so much attention to Mankai, Sakyo compensates Tsuzuru very generously.
Gaming is Itaru's part-time job. Taruchi is a mysterious persona who is crazy good at video games and has a soothing voice. The kick is that nobody knows what he looks like and Itaru would like to keep it that way. He's a popular streamer and Let's Player so there's no doubt that he is raking in a lot of cash. How he finds time to juggle an office job, Mankai, and streaming is beyond me, but it is absolutely impressive because despite how lazy he seems to be, he is a diligent worker who is very good at entertaining people. Plus, nobody knowing what his face looks like brings in a lot of intrigue and fans. Itaru always baits his fans that just maybe he'll reveal his face to them, but never does. Everyone loves his teasing and Itaru loves messing with people. One of the top streamers on his platform and he's proud of it. The appearance of Banri's NEO also helps a lot with bringing in viewers. (The extra money he makes is donated to the Mankai fund box)
Not gonna lie, but with Chikage being a spy as well as an office worker, I don't think he has enough time to have another job on top of that. As we saw in Act 5, he worked tirelessly on his computer, rarely sleeping. Being a spy is hard work, and now that he realizes that Hisoka may not have betrayed the organization, he now has to work to keep Hisoka's location hidden from enemies. Can you imagine being an office worker tho.... could never be me. Sry Chikage and Itaru lmfao but that sounds painful. Anyways, if Chikage isn't actively working for the organization and isn't posting on his curry blog, maybe he's doing tech support? He's always sitting at his computer so he might as well you know lmfaoo
"I'm too famous to work a part-time job" he says while at the same time applying to work at a bonsai shop. Who are you kidding, Tenma? Also pretty sure the owners don't really care so he gets the job right away since they're in desperate need of help. Tenma acts kind of bratty as it is his first time having a job that isn't acting, but he gets knocked down a few pegs when he has to carry around heavy bags of soil and nutrients for the bonsai trees. Eventually, he comes to love his job, seeing the owners as part of his family as they take great care of him while he works at their shop. Unfortunately, there will still be those fans who will watch him as he works at the bonsai shop, but Tenma uses it to his advantage, saying that if they want to look a little more, they're going to have to buy a bonsai tree. The owners are like ??? wtf tenma ??? but inevitably, it brings in a lot of business;;;
Yuki would definitely work at a boutique as an apprentice!! Working with different types of fabric and body shapes and frills, god, what a dream come true for him! Sure, making costumes for Mankai is one thing, but those are costumes, not actual clothes you would wear outside on the daily. His skill in clothes is amazing and it amazes his mentor who watches on proudly as Yuki sews something gorgeous every single time he comes to help. And Yuki absolutely loves being there too, getting to work on normal every day people who aren't huge hulking men that manage to ruin their measurements every time Yuki makes something for them. Plus, using this experience from his apprenticeship helps him a lot if he so chooses to go to a school for fashion. I'm rooting for you, Yuki!
Working at a manga store, Muku is absolutely in love. He's already in the Library Committee at school so might as well work somewhere book related, right? The boy was lucky to get the job at his favourite manga shop at the mall, and he doesn't even need to wear a uniform! As long as he wears his employee lanyard and name tag, he is all good to go! Being surrounded with his favourite book series and figurines and posters alike is very exciting for Muku, and he works extremely well with customers who need help looking for recommendations or gifts. His enthusiasm charms everyone he talks to and he becomes a customer and workplace favourite after a couple of days. His avid hobby of reading manga is apparent to everyone he comes across, and when he meets another customer who is just as dedicated to manga as he, they have long talks while Muku convinces them to buy more books.
Kazunari would definitely work at an arts store. Cliche, I know, but he wouldn't want to be anywhere else! Michaels would be a good place to start, but knowing how great he is at aesthetics, I think a paint store would do him well too. Both places would mostly have university students as their workers anyways so Kazunari would fit in right away! Popular with customers due to his enthusiasm with art, Kazunari gets a lot of requests for help when choosing certain pigments and wallpapers for bedrooms and large scale art projects. His knowledge with the subject of art is deep and wide, so he is able to answer any questions thrown his way. He is so loved at his job that when he eventually quits to achieve bigger things, they throw a party for him and all promise to visit and watch his next play!
It's canon that Misumi is a freelancer, which means he works any type of odd job and never sticks to one for too long. The job that he has kept the longest is the cafe one where he's with Sakuya. He actually helped Sakuya get this job at the first place, and when they work together, they're a force to be reckoned with! They bring in a lot of tips together and since Misumi is so quick on his feet and speedy with his hands, there's never a line up for drinks. Everything goes out the door just as fast as they had come in and his co-workers love him for it. He is also very popular for his fanged tooth and eye crinkling smile! Many regulars give him triangles as their tips! And if Misumi isn't working at the cafe, he's helping out as a mover because he's quick and strong (like we saw in HaGT), or he is helping out the local mailman. Because the mailman is growing older in age, Misumi takes it upon himself to help him deliver the rest of the mail so that the sweet old man can go home early. Misumi is always seen running around the neighbourhood with the mailbag!
I know this will sound weird, but I think Banri would fare well as a tutor. Knowing that he can just flip through a textbook once and immediately know what to do, I think it would do everyone good if he helped tutor those who struggle. Although I bash Banri a lot (as a joke) I am still able to see that he cares very much for others. He has rarely struggled in his life and clearly doesn't understand the hardships of the other members when they can't seem to do this or that, so he does his best to put himself in their shoes so he knows what he can do to help others who are struggling much the same. So Tsumugi helps him get a tutoring gig, and he hits it off right away. It's impressive really, how he's able to help students understand concepts they once thought they would never be able to get and it makes Banri happy. Banri is someone who wishes to help others-- he even says that he wants to help Mankai grow by bringing back the knowledge he learns at Veludo Arts. And I don't think he'd need the money, so he donates most of it to the Mankai funds.
Is it cliche of me to put Juza in a bakery? You know, sweets, confectionaries. BREAD. God, knowing how Juza grew up with a loving mom who almost always baked sweets for him and Kumon makes me want to cry. I love them so much. Anyways, he'd be a little clumsy in the back kitchen so I think he would just stick to decorating pastries and mini cakes and all that. It's a very curious thing to watch as a customer, a young, mean looking man scrunching his eyebrows as he puts a smiley face on a cupcake. It's cute. There's also another part of me that wants to see him work as an apprentice for shūji, or traditional Japanese calligraphy. Knowing that Juza studied it when he was younger (and that's why his signature is nice), it would definitely be pretty cool for him to do scrolls and stuff. It's a tough job though, considering the art of Japanese calligraphy is an important thing, and every stroke and word you write counts. It's a beautiful art form though, and Juza could make a pretty penny out of commissions.
After learning about journalling from Izumi, Taichi most definitely applied to work at a stationary shop. He's a bit clumsy with it, but he's got the spirit and that's all that matters! Strangely enough, this is one of the rare times where he isn't actively vying for attention, but for some reason he gets it a lot here. It's not like he minds or anything, but please, ladies, quiet down ^^; He is a favourite in the workplace though since he's so energetic and is always eager to help out customers; especially the old grandmas who are looking for gifts to give their grandchildren. The old ladies love him too, and they pamper him a lot much to his bashful enjoyment. And since his coworkers know that he loves journalling so much, they give him a lot of extra stock to bring home so that he can share it with Izumi and Omi! On a less serious note, he'd probably do public dance battles outside with his friends to get a quick buck.
Man... Omi would work at a bakery too. Most likely he would work with Juza because that would make sense, and both of their presences at the bakery shop would attract a lot of attention. Two, hulking dudes working at a bakery shop? Count me in pls. He'd be the one working at the back kitchen, baking everything and such. I would have also liked to put him in a restaurant, but considering that you can't become a sous chef or even a head chef until years later (due to the hierarchy and training), I don't think I want him to do that. He's already studying to become a business major after all so it would be difficult to juggle two separate things to study for. He would also work great as a photographer, but he doesn't do any taxing jobs unless it's for Mankai or very close friends. His friends always pay him too much, but they insist he keeps the money (which he puts into Mankai funds) and as compensation from Sakyo, the older man lets Omi indulge in buying expensive ingredients for that night's dinner.
Why is Sakyo working so hard? I'm getting worried. He works as Mankai's accountant and is part of the Yakuza; those are already two stressful things to work for. He has so much to do and there's always a lot of plate considering he manages a lot of Mankai with Matsukawa and Izumi, and on top of that he always acts as Mankai's Papa, Accountant, and Grumpy Old Man at the End of the Street. And when he isn't doing anything at Mankai, Patriarch Izumida calls him in for a task to do at Ginsenkai or the area they patrol. He also owns a freakin' diner that is under Ginsenkai's care like?? wtf Sakyo. He works so hard, spends tireless days to help keep Mankai afloat and it makes my heart hurty </3 Sakyo was my first crush so I can't help but worry a little and he's my comfort character whenever I'm way too engrossed at looking at Omi's huge bahonkerz so pls... Sakyo take care of urself I'm begging. Also most of the money he earns goes to his family, and the rest is for Mankai's funds.
Tsumugi on the other hand would stay as a tutor since it's canon! Sure, he has a bit of competition now that he's helped Banri enter the tutoring scene, but he's still got his loyal students to take care of. He is a very diligent worker and is very smart so working out problems is nothing too hard for him. He cares for each and every student he has, writing personalized study outlines for them as well as keeping notes on them with what they're struggling on, what they're excelling at, and even takes notes on their study habits and how long their attention lasts for until they need to take a break. Tsumugi makes sure that he is teaching his students properly and cares for them a lot. If not tutoring, he is helping at the local Veludo flower boutique and is very popular there. He helps create a lot of bouquets with deep meanings, but sometimes those bouquets he makes are gifting to him right after, lmao
Ugh as for Tasuku, knowing how good he is at fixing things, he would be great at an electronics store or a mechanics shop. He has a natural talent at fixing things and I can only assume it's because as a child, he really loved tinkering with items that were laying around the house. Plus, knowing that he has an older brother, he probably had a lot of Gundam sets laying around that sparked his interest in building things. You've seen him fix a lot of things right? To his motorcycle, his car, the television, my heart, omfg he can do it all like wtf. He becomes so skilled at fixing cars that he somehow acquires the skill to soup them up too?? When did those big ass rims get there? Where the hell did those damn hydraulics come from? That sort of thing. God he would look so sexy in a classic Ford Mustang </3 On the other hand, I think he would be great at becoming an acting coach. He might give Yuzo a run for his money.
It's canon that Hisoka has a job, but no one really knows what it is I think. I believe he would be a mattress tester! Remember that backstage story with the All Male Lap Pillow Competition or whatever? Hisoka is basically a connoisseur at all things soft and comfortable because he chose Izumi's lap as the most comfortable. He said it was so soft (god I wish I were him) that he could fall asleep and he did!!! Absolutely amazing. With his picky sleeping choices, Hisoka is able to tell whether this or that mattress prototype is good to go or needs some working on. The benefits to this job is that he gets to sleep a lot too because of course, they need to see if the mattress is good enough to sleep on!! Of course he gets paid in money, but since his managers know that he loves marshmallows, they pay him in that too.
Does Homare really need a part-time job? He's basically a renowned writer, it's just that Mankai seems ignorant to the fact. Tsuzuru and Muku has found a whole bunch of his books in the library for goodness sake so of course he's making mad bank! In HaGT he had a business meeting with a publisher/editor so you can't really tell me that he isn't good at his job because if he's having international meetings?? UHM. Of course he's famous literally what is he at Mankai for? The Found Family??? GOD OF COURSE you can stay Homare I love you so much. But seriously, he is super rich, and because he loves Mankai so much, he helps out and chips in to fill the Mankai funds so that they can stay afloat.
And here we have Azuma. I am not going to lie, but I am very protective over Azuma when it comes to his part-time job. Azuma was lonely for a huge chunk of life, unable to fill the void where his family used to sit in his heart. So he picked up skincare, and then he picked up cuddling/escort. His job in the past was full of false security and fake love that would never seal the cracks in his body, but when he found Mankai, something was different. He felt like he belonged somewhere. Especially after Nocturnality, it's obvious that Azuma has finally found his home. So I don't want him to go back to his cuddling/escort job;;; but if he wants to work again, I think being a skincare consultant would be really good! Since his skin is so flawless, many customers would flock to him for advice and the best products to use. His gentle voice and soothing caress as he rubs cream into his customer's skin is hypnotizing, and he shares his skincare routine with anyone who is willing to spend the time, effort, and money into making their skin look pretty like his.

Chapter 1. Duncan Fashion, my GWTW fanfiction The Robillard Boutique
Tumblr media
Charleston, May 1876
Excitement was building in Charleston's good society. At last, they would be able to meet the handsome heir to the most venerable and ancient family in the Deep South and certainly one of the wealthiest families in America.
So many mysteries surrounded Duncan Vayton, the great benefactor of the Cause and the new prince of fashion. *****
Paris, France, 1859 Duncan Vayton had left Charleston after graduating from West Point with flying colors. The future was open to him. His parents were excited to see him take over Soft South, the largest cotton plantation in South Carolina. They were even more excited about the prospect of their only son starting a family.
Duncan had other desires. Europe was opening its arms to him. American cotton from the Southern States, "King Cotton" as it was known, was wreaking havoc across the continent. Europeans imported 3,000,000 bales of the precious textile raw material every year.
It is under these favorable skies that the southern planter was welcomed with open arms by the French businessmen.
Upon his arrival, the young Duncan made an appointment with a major textile entrepreneur, Roger Dax, importer of a large quantity of Soft South's production. A first visit to the Dax woollen mill in Roubaix intrigued him. As a young man, he had ridden the miles of cotton fields to the point of mastering all the steps and hazards of growing and harvesting cotton. Therefore, he became interested in the techniques of transforming the bales into finished products.
Roger Dax was happy to show him his latest looms. He became familiar with the notions of carded cycle, beating, loader, drawing bench, spindle bench or worsted cycle. To perfect his knowledge, he visited the greatest textile factories in France and England, and was curious about the mechanical innovations of weaving.
His decision was made to join forces with his French friend, to bring him a substantial working capital and the energy of young America in order to transform the Dax family spinning mill into a textile factory aiming to compete with the largest French companies.
Of course, the master of Soft South had decided to supply himself with raw materials primarily from his family Plantation, ensuring also a substantial market share to his neighboring planters in the South. He could thus guarantee to his European customers, with full knowledge of the facts, a first quality cotton.
In order to distinguish themselves from other French linen manufacturers by the quality of the hems and trimmings, the two partners then secured the exclusivity of the best embroiderers installed in the North of France.
Vayton & Dax quickly established themselves in the lucrative market for embroidered tablecloths and monogrammed sheets. Their products were featured in the catalog of the famous Parisian store "Bon Marché". Advertising inserts were published in popular newspapers for the family. It became fashionable to enrich any wedding trousseau of young ladies of good society with the indispensable linens stamped "Vayton & Dax". ***
Charleston, 1861
At the first rumors of a probable conflict between the North and the South in early 1861, the Charlestonian enthusiastically left comfortable Europe to defend the values of his beloved South. When the Confederate States announced their entry into the war, the young man joined his army corps, swollen with confidence in the victory of the Cause.
From his first review of the troops, he realized how poorly equipped his soldiers were in uniforms. While the gray garment was adorned with flashy gold buttons, the fine canvas seemed, to the expert eyes of the textile professional, far too light to withstand the rigors of combat in what was sure to be a long war.
Unlike the Yankees, the Confederate States had a severe lack of cotton mills to transform their cotton production into clothing for their soldiers. So much so that, when the blockade no longer allowed General Lee's army to resupply itself, Lieutenant-Colonel Duncan Vayton contacted his French associate Roger Dax in Roubaix, and undertook to have his personal funds used to manufacture tightly woven pants and jackets to guarantee better waterproofing.
To repatriate this production to the battlefields of the southern army, he had to contact a blockade breaker. He was advised the best, the most intrepid, and therefore also the most expensive, a certain Rhett Butler.
An exchange of messages made him realize that invoking solidarity to the Cause among Charlestonians in order to lower the astronomical transportation rates had no chance of moving Captain Butler. Like the other blockade-breakers, he favored the transport of luxury goods which he would then sell at a high margin. Monopolizing valuable yardage for the benefit of the Army was a waste for these war profiteers. Duncan felt a deep contempt for this character.
When the defeat of the South was inevitable, Lieutenant Colonel Duncan Vayton, a great military strategist like his West Point professors, always on the front lines of battle, had won the unconditional admiration and respect of his men.
At the end of the war, Duncan helped his parents restore their plantation, which had suffered less than most of their friends.
Then he decided to go back to France. To the great despair of Cathleen and Aymeric Vayton. They had hoped so much that their only son would marry and give them an heir. Duncan would always reply, "Later, maybe someday.“
It wasn't for lack of opportunity to marry an attractive Southern belle: Duncan was, without a doubt, one of the most handsome men in Charleston. Tall, slender, with curly golden hair, deep blue eyes, a frank smile that emphasized a fine mustache, and a warm voice... In a few words, the perfect Prince Charming.
For Cathleen and Aymeric Vayton, any visit to Charleston by Duncan was an opportunity for grand receptions. Only the most respectable families were invited. Those with young daughters to marry were privileged. Any young beauty in bloom would shudder when she met Duncan's azure gaze. He would offer a smile, a dance, a compliment, a bow. With the assurance of a broken heart for his young admirer.
Yet Duncan was not dry-hearted. He loved his family deeply, his parents and his younger sister Melina, and was not stingy in his displays of affection for them. His Mammy, who had raised two generations of Vaytons, marveled at his big heart.
As for love... Duncan was discreet about his love affairs. His pre-war Parisian life had allowed him to blossom sexually... without obligation. Blondes, brunettes or redheads, they had to be sweet, loving, and above all without any desire to marry. He often preferred young married Parisian women. An exchange of pleasure guaranteed without constraint.
So Duncan was happy to resume his comfortable carnal habits upon his return to Europe in 1865. ***
Paris, 1865 His professional fulfillment was beginning to wane. Managing his flourishing textile company in France was no longer of much interest. He was only interested in creation and innovation. Roger Dax was not surprised that his American friend entrusted him with the management of their company.
The teachers who had trained him since childhood had initiated him very early to the knowledge of arts. The beauty of forms and the shimmer of colors intrigued him. The old Europe and its cradle of culture was an infinite resource of visual pleasure. Architecture, sculpture and painting, even the originality of wallpapers in vogue in private salons, everything was a pretext to titillate his intellectual curiosity.
This same attraction to beauty was of course expressed in the woman's body, her sinuous curves and the fabrics that highlighted them.
Inevitably, this thought process led him to take an interest in women's clothing. He eagerly embarked on a new adventure, luxury clothing.
To do this, the aesthete chose the most shimmering silks from India and the Far East, the softest cashmere wools, and the finely chiseled lace from the lacemakers of Calais. He selected the best milliners and mother-of-pearl button makers. A large, bright and ventilated workshop was reserved for the "little hands" responsible for inlaying pearls and brilliants on the most delicate fibers.
Designers and seamstresses were hired to join the venture. Revolutionary sewing machines made it easier for Duncan to produce handmade goods and let his imagination run wild.
The Duncan style, combining elegance, colors and sinuous curves, was born. His showroom on Rue de la Paix in Paris was named "La Mode Duncan".
Luck continued to protect him when he met the Empress Eugenie's milliner at a social dinner. The undeniable charm of the young American attracted the curiosity of the lady of the court. An appointment was made for a visit to the workshop and the presentation of the most beautiful models. The meeting was productive, followed by substantial orders. "La Mode Duncan" was launched.
Her designs were featured in the famous women's magazine "La Mode Illustrée" and in more specialized magazines such as "Le Journal des Marchandes de Mode".  Other of her creations, more accessible to the budgets of the petty bourgeoisie, appeared each year in the Catalogue of « Le Bon Marché ». Dresses, petticoats and hats from this new fashion house were snapped up.
"La Mode Duncan" had finally succeeded in imposing its fame and equalled the notoriety of the greatest Parisian couturiers.
Everything was going well for him. Until that day in December 1874, and the telegram from Cathleen. His father had died of a heart attack. His duty was to return to his family.

Visual artist Viivi returned from Paris to Finland and purchased a bomb-ready villa that needed to be extensively renovated. Now, it’s been turned into a gorgeous summer home.
Tumblr media
The magnificent villa was built in the 1920s and is entered via a semicircular veranda. Because the building was originally long and barn-like, they lightened it with the veranda.
Tumblr media
Viivi loves old furniture. When decorating the villa, she looked for it at flea markets, auctions, and second hand shops. The windows of the veranda were commissioned in Estonia. The armchairs were both inherited and flea market finds. An impressive group of lamps on the side table is Viivi's art.
Tumblr media
This unique table on the veranda was made by a carpenter.
Tumblr media
Different horned heads are one of Viivi's favorite subjects. Their gentle, soulful gaze fascinates her. On the table are Wish Boxes.
Tumblr media
The bohemian kitchen is located upstairs in the villa. The cabinets were made by a carpenter. Are those drawer fronts fabric? I can’t tell. Not really loving the cabinets.
Tumblr media
The stove in the kitchen is from the Canadian Embassy. (Of all the weird places to buy a stove- did you ever think of going to a foreign embassy and asking if they have anything you can use?)
Tumblr media
This handmade table matches the smaller one on the veranda. Love the mismatched chairs.
Tumblr media
Love the fireplace and black & white dishes.
Tumblr media
Downstairs is Viivi's studio. The press needed to make the graphics needs fixing and there’s a huge amount of work on the walls.
Tumblr media
Viivi’s bedroom has a gentle color palette. The golden wallpaper is 20 years old.
Tumblr media
In the picture above, I thought the custom made closet was peeling wallpaper, from the side. Anyway, I like the fixture on the ceiling.
Tumblr media
This is the room of Viivi’s adult daughter who chose the wallpaper, suitable for the era of the house.
Tumblr media
The furniture was found in flea markets. Very nice.
Tumblr media
The decorative railings on the staircase were made by a carpenter.
Tumblr media
Viivi commissioned the lounger from a local wooden boat sculptor, in the upstairs lobby lounge.
Tumblr media
Viivi found the bathroom's stunning purple tiles on sale. The floor tiles and the bathtub are recycled.
Tumblr media
I like the glass in the shower. The tile looks like it may have been on sale, too, but it fits.
Tumblr media
In summer, breakfast is usually had up on the terrace. What a great house it turned into considering that it was “bomb-ready.”

The Little White Dress: An Ella Mills Ficlet
A week or so ago, @queen-of-the-merry-men said she headcanoned Ella broke into the Tremaine manor to get her old Christening gown for Lucy to wear. It turned into this one-shot.
Also on AO3
The manor has changed a lot since Ella moved into it as a child. It had once been vibrant with cream-colored rose wallpaper and cozy furniture. She and her sisters would spend hours in the garden (being mindful of Cecelia’s herbs), hunting for bugs and having tea parties with their dolls. At night, they’d choose one of their rooms to have sleepovers in. It was rare they slept in their own bedroom for the first few years, until Cecelia and Marcus finally insisted that the girls needed to start getting used to doing things on their own. It had been a hard adjustment, but nonetheless, they still did everything together.
Until the night Tremaine returned and everything changed.
After Cecelia left and Tremaine moved back into the main house, the manor was redecorated. The wallpaper was stripped and black stripes were put up in its place. The once comfortable furniture was replaced with cold and unfeeling silver and maroon pieces that Tremaine had found from a faraway village. Ella had asked her father why he allowed for such things, but he simply told her to mind her step-mother. She was the woman of the house. What she said went.
That meant that the traditions were gone. On Christmas Eve, they used to hang their socks by the fireplace for Papá Noel and read stories. The following morning, they’d open presents and sing carols. Cecelia would make spiced hot chocolate and honey biscuits. The girls scarfed them down while their parents curled up on the couch together, watching the scene with a look in their eyes. They had been so happy.
With Tremaine, they were expected to be in bed early. There was no talk of Papá Noel. Even though Ella was old enough to know he didn’t exist, it still hurt. The first time she asked, Tremaine called her a baby and reprimanded her for wanting to celebrate so soon after the death of her sister. The next morning there were no gifts, Marcus hadn’t chopped down a tree that year. The box of handmade decorations made by all three girls was still stuffed away in the cellar. It wouldn’t be removed. Even in the years that they would celebrate, Tremaine would purchase fancy golden balls and wreaths. Ella never got any presents. She was told to host the many guests they had at the manor. Her father looked just as miserable as she did.
When her 15th birthday was approaching, she had asked about a Quinceañera. She knew it was a long shot, but it was something she and her mother had planned for months. Tremaine turned her nose up at the idea. She asked why Ella thought this milestone was anything important to celebrate? When Ella tried to explain it like Cecelia had to her, Tremaine told her to shut up and instructed her to go clean the fireplace. Ella did as instructed, with tears in her eyes. Drizella had a grand birthday thrown that year and Ella resented her during every moment of it, as she served all of her friends.
Now, Ella was a mother herself. She was determined to keep Cecelia’s traditions alive, no matter what. On Christmas Eve, she would tell her all about Papá Noel. She was already knitting her sock to hang on the fireplace on the cottage Henry was building them. Never would Lucy go without presents or knowing how loved she was. When the time came, Lucy would also have a quinces. It would be however she wanted it. A part of Ella felt blessed that her mother-in-law was Latina as well and could help her with the affair.
The first tradition, however, was her daughter’s baptism. Henry had let her plan it out exactly as she wanted, not caring how crazed she got. She found the church her mother had baptized her in, with the exact priest as well. They had Tiana on food, since she had shown her expertise with that. After careful consideration, they had picked her for godmother as well. Archie would be Lucy’s godfather and had agreed to travel with Snow, David and Emma for the ceremony.
There was just one thing missing: the christening gown itself.
While Tremaine had helped them turn Drizella into a statue, it had been a short-lived team-up. She had gotten what she wanted out of the deal, her daughter no longer a threat. However, she still made it clear that she blamed Ella for what happened to Anastasia. Ella was also nowhere near ready to forgive her for the amount of abuse that Tremaine had laid upon her. So, they agreed upon a truce. Tremaine would leave them alone and vice versa. It would’ve worked out perfectly if only Ella’s christening gown hadn’t been in the old manor.
She didn’t tell her husband or anyone what she was doing. Henry would try to talk her out of it, say they could just buy Lucy a new one. That wouldn’t have been the same. Ella needed it to be the same one that she wore to her own. It was tradition. Regina and Tiana would have for sure wanted to come as back up. No, this was something Ella had to do on her own.
Ella took a few trips past the manor to see when Tremaine would be gone. She finally figured out when she took her weekly trip to the market and the changing of the guards. With Drizella now a statute, this would be a lot easier than she originally planned.
She snuck in through one of the windows, tumbling in through the kitchen. Ella pushed herself up onto her feet and grabbed for her sword, wanting to be prepared for anything. She walked down the rickety stairs to the cellar that had been her bedroom for her final years in the home. The cot was still there, with the lone pillow and blanket. She had only been moved there once her father had been killed. The damp, cold and dark room made her sick most of the time. She had to power through it and perform her duties unless she wanted to face the wrath of Tremaine. God, she hated living down there.
Fumbling through her pocket, she found the match she had brought and lit the lantern in her other hand. The hat boxes piled high against the walls. A part of her was surprised that they were all still here. She would’ve thought Tremaine would have burned or sold all of her mother’s possessions by now. Why hold onto the things of the woman who supposedly ruined everything you held so dear? Well, according to her father, it hadn’t just been Cecelia in her mother’s mind. Gothel had been at fault too.
Ella took a step forward and scanned the wall until she found the one she was looking for. The box was bright blue with a hyacinth on the front. She carefully removed it from the middle, not wanting it to cause the rest to fall. Lifting the lid, she took out the dress. It was so tiny. Had she really once been as small as Lucy? That pure, so innocent and naïve of how cruel the world could be?
Oh, how she hoped she could keep Lucy from figuring that out.
The dress was still white as snow, with enough lace and frills to cover a town. There was a matching bonnet. According to Cecelia’s stories, this had been in their family for generations, she had worn it to her own christening, as had her mother before her. As Ella felt the dress between her fingertips, she felt closer to her mother. For so many years, she thought she had run away. That she hadn’t cared. In all reality, she had done it to protect two of the people she had loved more than anything in the world.
A week later, she stood in the church that she had been christened. Lucy wiggled in her arms. The dress was a bit big on her and the bonnet nearly covered her beautiful brown eyes. Henry stood beside Ella, his hand on the small of her back, beaming down at his two girls. Tiana and Archie were on the other side of the priest, their eyes also on their goddaughter-to-be.
This was the first major tradition of Lucia Cecelia Mills’ life. It certainly wouldn’t be the last.
