How a Naruto crossover fanfic lead me to the MXTX fandom

Fair Warning/s: Dramatic story sharing. It's about how I got into the MXTX fandom. And some experience regarding BL in general. So it's might be a bit of a long ranting story if you're uninterested. Also I wrote this idle experience more convoluted than it really is. Some occasional cursing.

Did you know it was a fanfic of a Naruto fanfic that showed me the rabbit hole of MXTX that I gladly jumped into with no regrets?

It's true and now that I look back it's been almost a year since I boarded this train and it looks like I won't be getting off anytime soon. I've never been more obsessed with BL media ever since I got on the Shounen Anime train and started shipping non canon(or canon is some people's opinions) couples.

My first few BL media eluded actual male relationships like "Kiss him, not me" anime/manga were the female protagonist was a unrepentant fujoshi and similar works. I wasn't actively looking for those types of works until my fanfiction consumption was not meeting my supply demand quota(as in the fanfics that interested me were running out that lead me to rereading, and browsing other fandoms).

That's when I was into the Detective Conan series, the anime and manga were really dragging out the plot so I went to search for good fanfics. That's where I noticed a certain tag that had me hesitant to use. Some of my old followers and fellow shippers out there know what I'm talking about.

That's right it was Kaito Kuroba/Shinichi Kudou or KaiShin tag.

I was a bit incredulous as to why there was such a sizeable amount of works under this tag (since rival/enemy roles in the anime/manga) and it couldn't hurt to read some of the more popularly rated works. I was not disappointed with the quality of the works nor the unconventional pairings so I would like to recommend Alaena F. Dragonstar or Alaena_F_Dragonstar from fanfiction.net and ao3 respectively if you don't already know them for their KaiShin fanfics.

And that my friends is how I was hooked from one boat to another. From reading fanfics tagged with hetero couples to reading works with popular OTPs of homosexual couples. I became an unrepentant fujoshi and proud of it.

So how does this relate to Naruto?

Well, it began with a Naruto fanfic in fanfiction.net written by Silver Queen titled "Dreaming of Sunshine". Its a sizeable fic of 716k words, 151 chapters, and incomplete hasn't updated in 3-4 years, if you are a Naruto fan who likes Naruto fanfics I would still recommend this story, it is the Naruto Fanfic among Naruto fanfics. The OC of the fic, Nara Shikako and the compelling writing and progression of the plot gave the fic its own small fanbase maybe hundreds or thousands of readers who started writing forums and their own fanfic with the OC, Nara Shikako. There is even an official tag on AO3 that I've put under favorites and still browse today.

So among those fanfics of that fanfic was a fanfic (LOL 😆 I've used the word so many times now) crossover of the The Untamed and the Naruto cast and OC of the Dreaming of Sunshine titled "Untamed Sunshine" by MrKipling22. My thoughts 🤔 at that time were 'cool 😎 a reincarnation story with my favorite iteration of the Naruto cast in a xianxia world'. It was a pretty good story story how various of the Konoha 12+2 were reborn into different clans and hilarious with how they all adapted to their clans. Like Naruto being born a Jin and how he f***ing drives JGS insane or Sasuke a Wen and how he lords his position over WC and my personal favorite is how the Nara twins and Sai are born into the Lans driving LQR to the daily brink of qi deviation 😂. Although fair warning, it's a bit mean on the MDZS cast especially to my favorite sunshine boy WWX but I didn't know that back then, the story gets better after a while.

This was how I got curious about the other half of the crossover, The Untamed. So I started researching Chinese danmei. Strangely enough my first donghua was Heaven Official's Blessing a few weeks before this, not knowing yet it was a donghua and had a book, a manhua and other media adaptations. I fell in love with beautiful graphics, music, and of course HuaLian. Then I moved on to MDZS donghua and other media and I learned those two had the same author and I've held off watching the drama but we had Netflix and I had time to kill, so yeah... Donghua, drama, Fanfic, fanart, beautiful CANON main couple, HUGE fanbase.

Well it's safe to say I've been thoroughly seduced by all of MXTX works and I'm highly anticipating all the future adaptations. (fingers crossed for season 2 of HOB or SVSSS soon)

The rabbit hole was so deep I did not want to climb out. (I'm terrible at using metaphors 😅?)

So that's how the crossover fanfic of a Naruto fanfic had lead me to the Holy Grail of MXTX and other danmei(I've seen the Word of Honor and read more etc. manhua and novels). (This was more convoluted than I thought it would be by the end of this post)

The analysis, metas and reviews of various fellow fans and fanfic writers has made me come to love, appreciate, and understand MDZS and the rest of MXTX's works (the characters, relationships, plot etc.) even more. So thanks to everyone out there who likes to talk about how amazing WWX is or how deep MXTX's writing really was.
