Crazy photos show ‘catastrophic collapse’ of major road near Yellowstone
A massive chunk of a major road into Jackson, Wyoming — the gateway to Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Tetons — crumbled away in a landslide just as the busy summer tourist season is kicking off.
Dramatic photos captured the gradual collapse of the Teton Pass road, which went from having a few small cracks to losing a large chunk of the pavement completely in a matter of days.
It began on Thursday when Wyoming Route 22 briefly closed as crews worked to repair a crack and drop to the road that had contributed to the crash of a motorcycle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“We were very, very lucky that no crews were harmed. No equipment was damaged,” Harsha said. “So now, engineers and geologists are doing geological assessments on the pass. They’ve been looking at it all day.”
It was not immediately clear how long it would take to reopen the highway, which is a vital road for people who live across the border in Idaho and work in Jackson, a popular tourist attraction that serves at the gateway for many visitors to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park.

Blogpost 10: The 3D Animation Process
For the fish animation, Theodor created a base rig in Blender and animated a short swim looped animation. The next step was to find a way to control the fish. As a result, we created a spline in Unreal Engine.
To learn how to make the spline, Theodor followed a tutorial and experimented with the blueprint, adjusting it for the project.
youtube
Fig.1 Follow Spline tutorial
It was something new to learn, as neither of us had experience with using blueprints before. But following the blueprint, we managed to get the desired result.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After the spline blueprint was functional, Theodor and Harsha implemented it in the underwater scene and made the required adjustments so the spline follows the camera animation and matches the environment.
Tumblr media
In addition, Theodor animated a sea anemone to add life to the scene and make the environment look more dynamic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After importing the animation in Unreal Engine, we matched the fish swimming spline with the closing animation of the anemone, making it look like all the anemone close when the fish go through them.
To make the anemone close at different times, we duplicated the animation file and modified in Unreal the speed of the animation, to match the moment the fish reach their position.

Another IPO Offering Snaps Out in 2022
The Snapdeal IPO has joined the long list of all the initial public offerings (IPOs) that have been shelved in 2022 amid growing concerns over poor market sentiments. The company had plans to raise over $152 million through its IPO.
The IPOs Year of 2022
Against Rs 1.22 lakh crores raised in 2021, 2022 has exhibited a dismal performance with companies managing to solicit only Rs 55,472 crores, which is a 54% Y-o-Y decline. While the Indian securities markets did see their biggest issue ever of Rs. 21,008 crores of LIC IPO, these shares were listed at an over 8% discount and have been on a decline ever since.
Some of the new IPO listed companies include Delhivery and Ruchi Soya, which launched their offerings for Rs. 5,235 and Rs. 4,300 crores respectively. However, the top performers in terms of oversubscriptions among the newly IPO listed companies were Dreamfolks Services, Electronics Mart India, Campus Activewear, Harsha Engineers International, and DCX Systems.
Furthermore, multi-bagging green shoots were shown by stocks like Adani Wilmar, Veranda Learning Solutions, and Venus Pipes & Tubes post-listing. And yet, several companies decided to pull the plug on their IPO plans, including Snapdeal and Droom.
Snapdeal Bows Out
Softbank-backed e-commerce-based Snapdeal is the newest casualty of the tech stocks’ meltdown. It has withdrawn its IPO prospectus from SEBI, which it submitted back in December 2021 over concerns of fizzling tech valuations.
Competing against Amazon and Flipkart, Snapdeal has seen its popularity nosedive, which is reflected in its burgeoning losses over the past three financial years (2019-2021). Initially valued at $6.5 billion in 2016, Snapdeal had plans to list on the stock exchange through an IPO that valued it at $1 billion only.
It is believed that Snapdeal shelved its plans on the back of poor performance shown by other newly listed IPO companies, including Paytm, Nykaa, and Zomato—the shares considered the poster boys of India’s evolving startup ecosystem. Zomato has more than halved since its all-time high price, while Paytm has lost almost 80% since its listing.
In addition to Snapdeal, several other startups, namely PharmEasy, boAT Lifestyle, and Droom have pulled the plug on their IPOs on the back of growing recessionary fears. The Russia-Ukraine war, Fed’s and RBI’s monetary tightening, and tech layoffs have worsened the market conditions.
It is unclear whether Snapdeal has any plans of refiling its IPO.
2023’s IPO Outlook
So, will this trend continue in 2023 as well? Not so, as per some experts. In fact, over 55 companies, such as Aadhar Housing Finance, Yatra Online, Fab India, Utkarsha Small Finance Bank, and TVS Supply Chain Solutions, have already received approval from SEBI to list on the stock exchange. In fact, Sah Polymers’ subscription is due to end on 4th January 2023 and is set to post it.
Moreover, with more and more retail investors taking to the securities market, it is believed that the IPO train will be driven by domestic institutional and retail capital, as opposed to FIIs. This is, of course, subject to IPOs being launched at reasonable valuations, which leave some room for growth for new investors.

Blogpost 04: Testing the Waters - Idea #1
As result of our designated tasks, our team was able to produce two potential concepts from our ideas as discussed prior from Miro.
Harsha and Liuchang was responsible for testing out the underwater idea. To figure out if this concept was doable in Unreal Engine 5, Harsha created a 'blueprint' of the underwater environment, featuring usable assets taken from a marketplace provided by Epic Games.
Finding an underwater blueprint online was a game-changer; it laid the groundwork for creating an enthralling underwater scene, which in turn propelled the project.
A game-changer was discovering an appropriate blueprint, and the internet is a huge treasure trove of tools for game makers. The underwater physics, lighting, and general atmosphere that would bring the picture to life were all laid out in this blueprint.
Tumblr media
Once the blueprint was in hand, the Unreal Engine could be customized and personalized to one's liking. Quick iterations and testing made possible by the blueprint system's user-friendliness transformed the original idea into an interactive and immersive aquatic experience.
Tumblr media
Harsha went ahead to test out a small animation loop of these fish assets, in order to see if the blueprint would turn out well. This was a successful product of the underwater idea!
Harsha then went ahead to further add more assets to the blueprint, such as including plants to the underwater grounds as illusions of seaweeds and general aquatic life. This helped bring together a cohesive idea of what the underwater experience would look like if we were to go ahead with this for our immersive dome project.
Liuchang created a storyboard for the underwater idea, which was a tricky job to pull off in 2D. Since the group hoped to implement more 'abstract' elements to this idea, Liuchang was tasked to represent this in the starting panels, showing a transition between rain and into the deep sea experience.
Tumblr media
These panels inform a variety of angles involving the perspective of a dome layout - with the first three offering a first- person view of 'looking up' to the pouring rain and sea waves from below.
Liuchang also made a point to include more diversity of marine life to the underwater idea, which she communicated through the drawings of whales inhabiting the environment. The last panel features a collective concept of involving ancient relics hidden beneath the sea, where we want to implement Atlantis tones within this idea.
Due to fascination with the ocean's allure and mystique, we all came up with the idea to develop an underwater world using Unreal Engine. Bringing this underwater realm to life with vibrant marine life, breath-taking sceneries, and interactive components was the objective of this project, accomplished through the utilization of the powerful capabilities provided by Unreal Engine. This choice was motivated by our aspiration to provide an experience that is both visually captivating and immersive, thus making the most of the capabilities of Unreal Engine in terms of producing realistic images and creating dynamic settings. Furthermore, exploring the depths of the virtual ocean and sharing that sense of amazement with users is a thrilling enterprise that makes for a stimulating experience.
Overall, the initial works produced for the underwater idea were successful, with the potential in creating a dome experience that would be exciting to exhibit in the future!

New technology provides hope for Great Lakes’ polluted waters
Tumblr media
By Abigail Comar
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and Environmental Protection Agency have demonstrated a new technology designed to reduce harmful algal blooms in lakes, including Lake Erie, which have been plagued by eutrophication.
It’s part of a wide range of efforts on both sides of the Canada-U.S. border to address the threat of Eutrophication on the Great Lakes and other inland bodies of water.
Eutrophication occurs when a lake has too many nutrients, such as phosphorus and nitrogen.
Plant life booms in lakes with a lot of nutrients, which initially sounds like a positive.
But excess nutrients and plant growth can suffocate aquatic animals by removing oxygen from the water, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
One common result of extra nutrients is harmful algal blooms.
Algae are simple plants that typically look like flecks of green in the water. A harmful bloom occurs when algae produce toxins that sicken other living things, including humans.
The demonstration of new algae harvesting technology occurred in mid-September at Harsha Lake, an important source of drinking water for Clermont County.
The technology, called hypernucleation flotation technology, physically removes algae from bodies of water. It was developed by the Dallas-based engineering firm AECOM.
Dan Levy, the national director of algae for AECOM, said the weeks-long test at Harsha Lake appears to be a success. Initial findings show that phosphorus in the water dropped below detectable levels.
The technology works by skimming the water or taking in water from a specific depth in a lake and physically separating the algae out of the water. The result is a solid clump of biological material Levy calls algae cake.
Levy said an important facet of AECOM’s development of the technology was that it be sustainable.
The algae cakes can safely be sent to a landfill, but there are other uses for them.
For example, the algae can be pressurized into liquid crude oil and used as fuel.
Levy said AECOM is working with the U.S. Department of Energy to make algae cakes into a viable energy source.
Algae products are also a way to replace plastics.
