I am currently reading the "HaruKana receive" manga, after seeing the anime. Now, we know the main ship in this story is two cousins Haruka and Kanata, but I just wanted to mention their friends Emily and Claire Thomas, who are twin sisters. They, like HaruKana, also play beach volleyball in a team together. Despite their constant bickering, they love each other and rely on each other. Emily thinks of her twin as "my amazing sister". As for suggestiveness, Claire loves to slap Emily's ass and they sure feel comfortable with undressing each other XD I do not ship this as much as I do Haruka and Kanata, but someone may be interested (also it's fun to imagine how they would go on a double date 😂)
By the way, this is chicavetta, I just changed the username💖

Because I used to read a fic where a guy my height (around 168) was practically called a dwarf, but now we have a 172 cm girl who's called "giant". REALLY?

A lot of titles from 2018 got onto my list of “personal standout anime” made up just a year later. Even at the time I was drawing it up, though, I did wonder if I’d relaxed my standards after the thinner years just previous for the sake of presenting an impressive-looking retrospective near the end of the decade. At the time it wasn’t hard to make a top pick, but as I sorted out I’d get to this year this time around on a weekend I did start wondering about making a double feature of it. The only nagging problem was the B-title that kept coming to mind threatened to feel “brought up for the wrong reasons, especially when associated with something so impressive.” In the end, however, I forced back my misgivings and went straight from A Place Further than the Universe to Harukana Receive...

Anime of the day: Harukana Receive
Tumblr media
Released: 2018
Haruka recently moved in with her grandmother and her cousin Kanata. On the beach one day she sees girls playing volleyball. She is invited to come play with them; however, when her cousin Kanata is spotted the girls want to turn this playful beach fun into a competition. Contrary to court competitions, beach volleyball is typically played in pairs. In order to excel, the pairing must be perfectly balanced, but the combination of Kanata, who is quite short, and Haruka, who is inexperienced, isn’t balanced. They are quickly defeated, but this won’t be their last match.

Anime finished this year 3: Harukana Receive
6/10
Transcript under the cut
I do love me a good old fashioned found family sports anime, so when I found another volleyball anime after loving Haikyuu, you know I had to try this. Even better, it was on beach volleyball, the sport that doesn't get as much of the limelight compared to its bigger teamed cousin. Not to mention it was going to focus on girls sports and looked to have decent production values, which can be something of a rarity, unfortunately.
However, this one ended up being a decent mix of great and not so great stuff. I'll start with the not so great so we can end on the good. First of all, this is another one of those series that isn't a full and complete story. I understand that's just part of the fact that it's an adaptation of a source material that is too long for it to all fit into a twelve episode package. However, since my roommate and I tend to watch these sports series together, the both of us are getting a little tired of the end of a season being the team gearing up to head off to nationals, only for nationals to be something that never actually comes to pass, thanks to the point where the season has to cut off. It's such a trend in these shows, it's almost comical. Unfortunately, many of these shows never see a second season either, so that story is just left hanging there.
The other issue is the way that the show has a lot of unneeded fanservice shots. I am not complaining about the fact that these girls spend most of the series in bikinis. That's kind of the standard for the sport, after all. However, the show is full of shots from low angles to get a girl's ass in frame when it adds nothing to the story, which makes me keenly aware that this was made with a certain male viewership in mind. It was just done in way that was distracting and annoying. We spent the first several episodes laughing about how the swimsuits had absolutely no level of support that would be needed for playing a highly active sport like volleyball.
However, underneath those problems, this is a decently enjoyable sports anime with some nice found family elements that we always like to see in this sort of thing. The animation is well done, making the action of the sport feel fun and dynamic. Some of the characters are a little on the thin side, but even in those cases, they're still fun and likable. Matches are kept nice and snappy, not dragged out for the sake of filling time. Overall, it was fine, but not anything special, though, and I don't feel any need to rewatch it anytime soon.
