In my recent game I came across some dialogue from Gale I've not seen before, despite this being my 500000000th romance with this man. So we meet Lorroakan for the first time and convince him that Aylin is dead. Speaking to Gale, I think, ok, he's going to be like "hey what a shit wizard" or "what an arrogant little twat" because we've already seen his rubbish projections and it's Lorroakan, come on. Then Gale says this:
Tumblr media
Yes, he falls short of - wait. What? Gale is roasting Lorroakan not for his magical skills. He is incensed by his inability to use multiple sources to verify information.
Tumblr media
This absolute nerd is more pissed about having too few citations than the fact that Lorroakan is an amoral little jerk that wants to torturously leech off of an aasimar's soul for his own immortality.
I -
Gale, please never change. I love you, you ridiculous dork.

not to introduce another standard into the mix but. i do think there needs to be like. actual international cooperation on narrowing it down to one reference style because if i have to learn one more goddamn way to cite things im going to kill us all

@culmaer : #harvard #which is other but I'd've assumed an American like op would be familiar with it #citation #poll #in text citations #footnotes are for commentary @phoenixyfriend [OP, in the notes] : @culmaer nope, Harvard style is a very British thing. I'd heard of it, but it wasn't on any lists I used to make the poll so I didn't remember it in time to include it. Turns out it's just not a thing in the US; even Harvard University's library website says "we are not associated with that style and we will not help you cite with it, look it up online yourself."
oh, huh... well that's surprising ! I'd just assumed... and since Harvard is in the US, y'know... oké. well
on doing some further (yet superficial) reading, apparently the in-text "author, year"-in-parentheses referencing style has it's origin with E.L. Mark, a professor of zoölogy/anatomy at Harvard in the 1880s, but the style wasn't commissioned or adopted or promoted by Harvard University as a Whole. so although my instinct is to say that calling it "the Harvard system" is misleading, I guess it is technically a correct attribution
In honor of hbomberguy's video...
I've found a youtube response to the hbomberguy video that isn't just content hunting/recuts! And doesn't seem to be a planned thing like Todd!
Mostly because this is an academic using the hbomberguy video as a jumping off point to talk to the camera, with few edits, about how to cite your sources.
Don't Be Like James Somerton: Advice on Citations and Plagiarism by Archaeology Tube
This is a very reasonable kind of thing to see a day or two after a big story hits. Not edited in a way that's super intensive, and clearly a lecture--too happy to be a rant, honestly--that the person has locked and loaded and has obviously thought about a lot... presumably because, as an academic, it's kind of super necessary.

this is why I don't use standardized sourcing, because it only further-contributes to being falsely flagged.
Make the quote itself a giant hyperlink instead, because AI won't do that!

Me: I find it weird when fans of a long running franchise complain about characterisation because when a story's so old it's been around for literal generations inevitably there's gonna be variations in how characters are written. Comics change hands every few years, different decisions are made for movies, shows, cartoons, videogames. Even if we're just talking about comics the older companies have long been making random aus of their main properties where the setting changes so drastically the characterisation has to change too or the story doesn't work at all. One writer may create two completely separate versions of one character and have them be the same person in appearance and name only. Sure, everybody's got a preference for what they'd rather see, but saying someone is acting "out of character" when there were already a dozen versions of that character before you were born feels kinda pointless.
Also me: if one more person misinterprets my blorbos I'm gonna personally drown them in a vat of baked beans.

on friday i kind of just threw my coursework assignment in like 'here take that it is what it is', thinking that it would be a very impersonal marking process (as it has been previously, you just submit it on the website and then get a pass/fail with no feedback). i knew that some of it wasn't amazing, but i was like 'eh i'll never have to interact with the examiner so whatever'. then today i got an email from the actual course tutor like 'hi sophie. i've reviewed your coursework before submission and you need to amend these bits before i send it over to the examining body. you really fucked XYZ up (paraphrasing)'. that means someone actually READ it omg how mortifying.
