“MAHANA”
by Hula
Born on the eastside of Oahu, Sean Yoro spent most of his time surfing until he discovered graffiti and tattoo art in his late teens. After taking a community college drawing class Yoro moved to Brooklyn and working as Hula he honed his fine art skills. Hula was soon merging his art and childhood love of being on the water, working from a paddleboard creating his trademark works emerging from the water on sides of ships, docks, and walls. For the 2016 edition of the flagship Pow!Wow! festival in Kaka’ako, Honolulu, Hula was back on Oahu painting “mahana” [warmth] on dry land for a change. This portrait of Hawaiian photographer Brooke Dombroski, aka @brooklynhawaii, was painted on Keawe St at @SALTOurKakaako, part of a very different kind of urban project, @OurKakaako, founded by Kamehameha Schools and committed to culturally appropriate development.  @the_hula/  @powwowworldwide

POW!WOW! HAWAII
by Mr Jago
A veteran of the graffiti world, UK artist Duncan Jago, aka Mr Jago, studied illustration but soon turned to colorful abstract work. Dismissing strict rules and shapes, @wdwlls reports that his work “represents the deepness and latitude of nature, and its interconnection with people through intensity of colors, textures, and forms . . . emphasizing the problems of warfare, biosphere, and climate change.” In Honolulu in 2017 for the annual Pow!Wow! Hawaii festival Mr Jago added this colorful wall on Ward Ave in the Kaka’ako neighborhood.  @mr_jago/  @powwowworldwide/

POW!WOW! HAWAII 2018
by Faile
When the Brooklyn-based duo of Patrick McNeil and Patrick Miller, aka Faile, were invited to participate in the Pow!Wow! movement’s flagship festival in Hawai’i in 2018, they said they wanted to “get back to our early street art days being a bit looser and less refined.” Still rich with symbolism and cultural relevance however, John Hina, aka Prime, founder of @808prime supporting at-risk youth, painted the word ‘Onipa’a—meaning immovable or resolute. The Faile team also says that the red, white, and blue border of the Lana Lane wall in Kaka’ako is a reference to Hawaiian quilt making: “When the white line is on the outside it represents peace and harmony. When the red line is on the outside it represents war and resistance.”  @faileart  @powwowworldwide

“NENE”
by Joram Roukes
Also known as the Hawaiian goose, the once common nene is now the world’s rarest goose. In 1952 the population was as low as 30 birds but by 2004 it’s estimated that there were 800 birds in the wild and another 1,000 in protected environments. For the 2017 edition of Pow!Wow! Worldwide’s flagship festival in Honolulu’s Kaka’ako neighborhood, Joram Roukes says he returned “to where it started,” drawing birds—only on a much larger scale—painting “Nene” on the Ward Centre parking structure entry on Auahi St. Trained as a fine artist Roukes uses “abstract narratives and figures that evoke introspection and contemplation” to comment on a range of personal, global, and cultural issues.  @joramroukes/  @powwowworldwide/  @wardvillage/

“PREDATORS”
by Natalia Rak
Born just a few short years before Poland launched a wave of revolutions that followed across Central and Eastern Europe, Natalia Rak emerged as what Pow! Wow! refers to as one of the nation’s most exciting painters and street artists. An admirer of Fauvism, Rak’s paintings of “the many faces of women” replace representational color with a bold palette of reds and purples, creating “mood, mystery, and metaphor.” In 2015 Rak was on Ilaniwai St. in Honolulu’s Kaka’ako neighborhood creating this beautiful composition for Pow!Wow! Hawaii, illustrating the delicate balance between fragility and force.  @nataliarakart  @powwowworldwide
