“MAHANA”
by Hula
Born on the eastside of Oahu, Sean Yoro spent most of his time surfing until he discovered graffiti and tattoo art in his late teens. After taking a community college drawing class Yoro moved to Brooklyn and working as Hula he honed his fine art skills. Hula was soon merging his art and childhood love of being on the water, working from a paddleboard creating his trademark works emerging from the water on sides of ships, docks, and walls. For the 2016 edition of the flagship Pow!Wow! festival in Kaka’ako, Honolulu, Hula was back on Oahu painting “mahana” [warmth] on dry land for a change. This portrait of Hawaiian photographer Brooke Dombroski, aka @brooklynhawaii, was painted on Keawe St at @SALTOurKakaako, part of a very different kind of urban project, @OurKakaako, founded by Kamehameha Schools and committed to culturally appropriate development.  @the_hula/  @powwowworldwide

POW!WOW! HAWAII
by Mr Jago
A veteran of the graffiti world, UK artist Duncan Jago, aka Mr Jago, studied illustration but soon turned to colorful abstract work. Dismissing strict rules and shapes, @wdwlls reports that his work “represents the deepness and latitude of nature, and its interconnection with people through intensity of colors, textures, and forms . . . emphasizing the problems of warfare, biosphere, and climate change.” In Honolulu in 2017 for the annual Pow!Wow! Hawaii festival Mr Jago added this colorful wall on Ward Ave in the Kaka’ako neighborhood.  @mr_jago/  @powwowworldwide/

POW!WOW! HAWAII 2018
by Faile
When the Brooklyn-based duo of Patrick McNeil and Patrick Miller, aka Faile, were invited to participate in the Pow!Wow! movement’s flagship festival in Hawai’i in 2018, they said they wanted to “get back to our early street art days being a bit looser and less refined.” Still rich with symbolism and cultural relevance however, John Hina, aka Prime, founder of @808prime supporting at-risk youth, painted the word ‘Onipa’a—meaning immovable or resolute. The Faile team also says that the red, white, and blue border of the Lana Lane wall in Kaka’ako is a reference to Hawaiian quilt making: “When the white line is on the outside it represents peace and harmony. When the red line is on the outside it represents war and resistance.”  @faileart  @powwowworldwide

“NENE”
by Joram Roukes
Also known as the Hawaiian goose, the once common nene is now the world’s rarest goose. In 1952 the population was as low as 30 birds but by 2004 it’s estimated that there were 800 birds in the wild and another 1,000 in protected environments. For the 2017 edition of Pow!Wow! Worldwide’s flagship festival in Honolulu’s Kaka’ako neighborhood, Joram Roukes says he returned “to where it started,” drawing birds—only on a much larger scale—painting “Nene” on the Ward Centre parking structure entry on Auahi St. Trained as a fine artist Roukes uses “abstract narratives and figures that evoke introspection and contemplation” to comment on a range of personal, global, and cultural issues.  @joramroukes/  @powwowworldwide/  @wardvillage/

“PREDATORS”
by Natalia Rak
Born just a few short years before Poland launched a wave of revolutions that followed across Central and Eastern Europe, Natalia Rak emerged as what Pow! Wow! refers to as one of the nation’s most exciting painters and street artists. An admirer of Fauvism, Rak’s paintings of “the many faces of women” replace representational color with a bold palette of reds and purples, creating “mood, mystery, and metaphor.” In 2015 Rak was on Ilaniwai St. in Honolulu’s Kaka’ako neighborhood creating this beautiful composition for Pow!Wow! Hawaii, illustrating the delicate balance between fragility and force.  @nataliarakart  @powwowworldwide

“ENDANGERED BIRTH”
by Dulk
Holding a special place in Hawaiian culture, the feathers of the ’i’wi—scarlet honeycreeper—were highly prized by the ali’i (nobility), used in decorating their ’ahu’ulu (feathered cloaks) and mahiole (feathered helmets). While still among the most common of the islands’ unique and rapidly disappearing hummingbirds, the ’i’wi has been driven from much of its natural habitat and its population is in decline. Spanish artist Antonio Segura Donat, aka Dulk, was in Honolulu in early 2018 for the annual Pow!Wow! Hawaii gathering and created this Kamani St image of the ’i’wi nestled on one of its favorite native flowers, the lehua. Dulk grew up copying illustrations of exotic animals from his parents’ encyclopedias and today his unique animal-themed combinations of the real and the fanciful always make him an instant favorite on streets everywhere.  @dulk1  @powwowworldwide

POW!WOW! HAWAII
by Sam Yong
“Yong has long used natural elements as a vehicle for communicating aspects of the human experience” —@beinartgallery
A self-confessed introvert, self-taught Melbourne artist Sam Yong appreciates solitude and has developed a love of nature and solo adventure. In early 2018 however, Yong was happy to trade solitude for an opportunity to work alongside a roster of well over 50 local and visiting artists, painting in and around Honolulu’s Kaka’ako neighborhood for the annual Pow!Wow! Hawaii festival. Yong’s contribution is behind the @FisherHawaii warehouse at Pohukaina and Coral Streets.  @samyongart  @powwowworldwide

“CODESWITCHONYA”
by Sydney G. James
“I never considered myself a fine artist. I was an illustrator. My job was to create images for stories.  When I took control of the stories, I then became a fine artist. My work is always personal; I want my viewers to experience a personal connection as well.” —Sydney G. James
After moving to Los Angeles in 2004 to pursue new opportunities Sydney James returned home to Detroit in 2011 and has since had several important exhibits of her work, including at @TheWrightMuseum of African American History. Increasingly called on to also create outdoor work, both at home and on the road, in early 2018 she created this work just off of Cooke St in Kaka’ako for Pow!Wow! Hawaii. A play on @OutKast “Stankonia” album cover, James says this mural highlights the pressure on black women to “code switch”—constantly adapting hair, speech, and actions in order to make people around them comfortable.  @sydneygjames  @powwowworldwide

FISHER HAWAII
by Whole 9
A little over 10 years ago Osaka artists Hitch and Simo joined forces and formed Whole 9. In addition to murals they are known for live painting but despite the rapid speed of their painting they strive to maintain exceptional quality in their work. With Hitch focusing on the representational parts of their work and Simo concentrating on the abstract the the pair were in Hawai’i in early 2018 for Pow! Wow! and created this complex composition on the “mauka” (mountain) side of office supply outlet @FisherHawaii, adjacent to Mother Waldron Neighborhood Park in Kaka’ako.  @simo_w9/  @hitch_w9/  @whole9_w9/  @powwowworldwide

GIANT CAT ROBOT
by Sean Chao
Originally from Taiwan, Sean Chao now makes his home in Los Angeles and is a graduate of Art Center. While proficient in a wide variety of medums Chao most likes to make art with his hands, creating small sculptures with Sculpey, wood, paper, and wire. Building movement into each scene, creating the feeling of moments frozen in time, viewers are awed by the level of minute detail crafted into each work and left with a smile. For Pow!Wow! Hawaii 2018 Chao recreated one of his sculptures, “Giant Cat Robot,” on the streets of Kaka’ako, Honolullu, at Cooke and Halekauwila Streets.  @seanchaochao/  @powwowworldwide

@shok_1 is in town and working on something special for @powwowworldwide! This is just his warm up/tester area to get his bearings with the paint, environment, wall, and all the other elements.
