“NENE”

Also known as the Hawaiian goose, the once common nene is now the world’s rarest goose. In 1952 the population was as low as 30 birds but by 2004 it’s estimated that there were 800 birds in the wild and another 1,000 in protected environments. For the 2017 edition of Pow!Wow! Worldwide’s flagship festival in Honolulu’s Kaka’ako neighborhood, Joram Roukes says he returned “to where it started,” drawing birds—only on a much larger scale—painting “Nene” on the Ward Centre parking structure entry on Auahi St. Trained as a fine artist Roukes uses “abstract narratives and figures that evoke introspection and contemplation” to comment on a range of personal, global, and cultural issues.  @joramroukes/  @powwowworldwide/  @wardvillage/

“SEGA”

Working half a world apart Maarten Emily runs Inkredible Ink Tattoo in the Netherlands and Sulu’ape Steve owns Pacific Soul Tattoo in Honolulu—each artist perfecting their craft over more than two decades of work. Steve is half Samoan and taking inspiration from that background the two tattooists collaborated in late 2017 on this Ward Ave wall near his Honolulu shop. Titled after Samoa’s Cardinal Honeyeater—segasegamau’u—Maarten says all the elements of the work have special meaning, from the patterns of the kingdom’s traditional Tatau which form the basis of so much of the modern art of tattoo, to the hopeful eyes and humble smile of the Polynesian beauty.  @pacificsoul_steve  @maartenemily

POW!WOW! HAWAII

A self-confessed introvert, self-taught Melbourne artist Sam Yong appreciates solitude and has developed a love of nature and solo adventure. In early 2018 however, Yong was happy to trade solitude for an opportunity to work alongside a roster of well over 50 local and visiting artists, painting in and around Honolulu’s Kaka’ako neighborhood for the annual Pow!Wow! Hawaii festival. Yong’s contribution is behind the @FisherHawaii warehouse at Pohukaina and Coral Streets.  @samyongart  @powwowworldwide

“OCTOPUS FLYING THROUGH SPACE”

A practicing graphic designer and artist who also teaches both at the Island Pacific Academy in Kapolei, near Honolulu, Boz Schurr also enjoys painting murals around O’ahu. Passionate about mental health issues Schurr compares the visible color spectrum to the human experience and the way we arbitrarily distinguish between mental illness and normalcy—her personal logo is a visualization of Maya Angelou’s quote “Be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud.” After more than a year of “sketches, emails and coffee-fueled negoiations” she says, Schurr spent two solid weeks of long days in early 2017 incorporating the rainbow into her largest mural yet—4,000 sq. ft. at the corner of Piikoi and Kona Streets in Honolulu’s Ala Moana neighborhood.  @bozschurr/
