The Hawaiian Goose, known as Nene (pronounced nay-nay) by the locals, is one of the most endangered birds in the world, but it is not apparent because we had several sightings of them while there. Hawaiimagazine.com had this to say: "When Captain James Cook arrived in the Hawaiian Islands in 1778, his naturalists noted that the goose was quite common. But hunting, and predators like mongooses, pigs and cats, reduced the nene population to just 30 birds by 1952. The goose has since been bred back from the brink of extinction and re-introduced into the wild. Today, with 2,500 birds in the wild, it is still the sixth-most endangered waterfowl species in the world." The website also had this information. "The Nene became the state bird of Hawaii in 1957." "One of the favorite foods of the Nene is the bright red ohelo berry that grows on lava." “NENE”

Also known as the Hawaiian goose, the once common nene is now the world’s rarest goose. In 1952 the population was as low as 30 birds but by 2004 it’s estimated that there were 800 birds in the wild and another 1,000 in protected environments. For the 2017 edition of Pow!Wow! Worldwide’s flagship festival in Honolulu’s Kaka’ako neighborhood, Joram Roukes says he returned “to where it started,” drawing birds—only on a much larger scale—painting “Nene” on the Ward Centre parking structure entry on Auahi St. Trained as a fine artist Roukes uses “abstract narratives and figures that evoke introspection and contemplation” to comment on a range of personal, global, and cultural issues.  @joramroukes/  @powwowworldwide/  @wardvillage/

Day 1 in Maui: on the way to Paia, Moris and I stopped at the Kanaha Ponds State Wildlife Sanctuary in Kahului for another round of endangered nenes (Hawaiian goose), coots, and stilts. Once fish ponds of Hawaiian royalty, then owned by a Hawaiian sugar company who donated it to the Navy during WWII, now a wildlife sanctuary under ecological restoration. After dinner in Paia, we hit one of the most beautiful beaches on the northern shore just in time to get a swim in before sunset, Baldwin Beach.
