When I first made the Crybatty au, I didn't have a story in mind. I was just listening to Melanie Martinez songs and thought "what if I made an adorabat au based on these songs" and then I did, drawing The first Crybatty picture that same day. Then I started to develop it further to the Au you know today.
However, Those early pictures weren't as story focus as the pictures today so you don't know the full story.
After some thinking, I've decided to explain how each song from the crybaby album fit into the story and I'll do the same for k-12 when I finish all the k-12 pictures.
There will be some retcons and things that seem like they don't fit, but that stuff happens when you add ideas to a story that weren't intended from the beginning.
Adult themes mentioned, so be warned
Here is her story in semi chronological order.
Crybaby
Pretty simple, this is a general song about Crybatty herself: she's overemotional, unpopular, and cries lot. Now here is her full backstory:
Born to rich parents Eugene and Sonara, as a baby she was ignored and raised by her older brother (dun dun dun!) Despite him only being 5 at the time. When adorabat was 4, both Eugene and Sonara were killed by a monster. Since her parents were cruel to everyone, non of her relatives wanted to take Crybatty or her brother in so they were Both sent to the orphanage. Soon, her brother was adopted but not her, so she was left alone there. The Orphan keeper and the other orphans were cruel to her because of how easy it was to make her cry or lash out. She dealt with this torment until she was 13. A new sheriff and his wife moved into pure heart valley and decided to adopt her.
Now she can live a happy life, right?
Dollhouse
It's because of this song that I decided to explain Crybattys backstory and I had to rewrite some stuff to make it fit.
Despite being adopted, she didn't gain rest from conflict. While Mao Mao and Badgerclair weren't mean to her, they argued constantly and their behavior reminded her of not only her birth parents, but also the orphan keeper. Badgerclair drank alot like Sonara, Mao Mao was constantly sleeping with other women like Eugene, and they wore the facade of being a perfect family.
These memories brought up more memories, some about her brother. She remembered how her brother started smoking weed at only 7 to deal with the stress. She also remember how on the day her brother was adopted (by drug dealers), the orphan keeper wanted Crybatty gone, so she tried to force the parents to adopt both her and her brother, but they refused and only took her brother. All she had to remember him by was a small bat doll he gave to her as a baby.
Tag, you're it/Milk and Cookies
These songs go hand and hand both in the album and In the Crybatty story.
Sometime after her brother was adopted and before she was adopted, Crybatty was forced by the Orphan keeper to take a big trash bag to the dumpster across the street at night. While walking back, she was approached by the King of pure heart valley, Snugglmange. He previously saw Crybatty when he visited the Orphanage and when he saw her, he was instantly obsessed. He couldn't rest until she was his. He approached her in the dark and when she ran away in fear, he chased and captured her, taking her away to his castle and locking her in a secret room. The only other person who knew she was there was the Royal alchemist Camille. She was horrified by the kidnapping but because she was in love with the king, she kept her mouth shut.
The king didn't want her to be his wife or even for sexual reasons. He wanted her because just the idea of her being his was like heaven for him. She was his, he owned her. He eventually made her get her now famous tattoos, the tear drop and the triangles above her eyes, as proof of his ownership of her.
Days after he took her, she had enough of his outbursts and found a way to escape. However, she knew he'd find a way to get her back, so she had to take drastic actions. She baked a batch of cookies and put poisonus chemicals in them that she stole from Camile. She gave the cookies to the king and she watch as he died from the poisoning. Then, she left.
When she got back to the orphanage, the orphan keeper didn't seem to care, or even know, that Crybatty was missing for days. However, the Orphan keeper and the other orphans noticed her new tattoos and of course, would tease her about them (although, some did like them). At first, Crybatty hated them as they were a reminder of the king. However, soon she began to see them as victory scars. Even though he did kidnap her and forced these tattoos on her, she did end up killing him and these tattoos were proof. She even began to embrace her the name that all the kids would call her as a insult, Crybatty, because the king called her by her real name Adorabat in a creepy way.
Although still emotional, she decided to not take shit from anyone anymore.
Pity party
Pretty simple song with a simple placement in the story
Crybatty had finally been going to school after being adopted. She decided that she would try to be nice to everyone as a way to make friends. And a week before her birthday she tried to plan a birthday party and she invited everyone she thought she was friends with. However, come the day of the party, no one showed up. Despite her trying to see the bright side, this was Crybattys emotional breaking point. She realized trying to be nice would get her nowhere, so she would close herself off from everyone so no one would hurt her again. However, suddenly there was a knock at the door and when Crybatty answered it, she met a girl named Honey
Honey went to the same school as Crybatty, however she didn't get an invitation to the party because Crybatty didn't notice her. Honey though, noticed that all of the kids that Crybatty gave an invitation too either ripped it up or threw it away behind her back. Honey grabbed one of the crumpled papers and went to the party anyway, the only person to show up. Crybatty was overwhelmed by emotions and hugged honey, instantly wanting to be friends with her. They shared a slice of cake (as Crybatty threw her cake on the ground in anger earlier) and enjoyed the small party together.
Sippy cup
Story about the things Crybatty sees around her.
She sees the constant conflict between Mao Mao and Badgerclair due to Mao Mao constantly sleeping with other women. Mao Mao even cause Penny and Benny to divorce. And even though Badgerclair wants it to stop, she doesn't leave Mao Mao because she feels like only he would ever love her.
She sees how insecure Honey is about her body and appearance. Honey's guardian, who Crybatty would later learn is Camille, was always making honey feel bad about herself and so she became taking unhealthy diets.
Both if these problems Crybatty had no control over, she all she could do was watch.
Mad hatter
Crybatty eats a strong edible and trips out
Carousel
How Crybatty meets someone special.
Crybatty went to a pop-up carnival one day. She went on a few rides, not really enjoying herself. Until she go on the carousel where while waiting for it to start, she sees a cute boy she immediately gets infatuated with. She's had small crushes before, but there was something different about him. He got on the seat in front of her which is a good metaphor because he was so close yet so far. When the ride stopped, he got off and she was unable to catch up to him. She spent hours trying to find him at the carnival, but she couldn't. She gave up and decided to ride the carousel one more time before leaving. However, when she got on one of the horses, she saw that on the horse next to her was the boy. She talked to him and they became quickly attached. She learned his name was Edwin.
~~~~~~~~~
So that was part one, I promise part two won't take like 5 years to write, I hope. Hope you enjoyed reading this long explanation.
Abilities
Genius Level Intellect: The Riddler is a supreme problem-solver, criminal mastermind. He is a genius with brilliant deductive power. His mind excels with puzzles, minds games, and manipulations. Investigation: He possesses great deductive skills and analytic ability. Escapology: Riddler is adept in escapology. Since childhood Edward has been a big fan of the late great Harold Houdini. Using this skill to build his infamous elaborate death traps and easily escape handcuffs. Like the Joker, he can escape the high security hospital Arkham Asylum whenever he pleases.
Tumblr media
Weaknesses
Obsession: His riddles are in fact a bizarre obsessive compulsion; his attempts to stop himself from sending them has met with failure time and time again. This extends to the fact he cannot simply kill his opponents when he has the upper hand, but prefers to put them in a deathtrap to see if he can devise a life and death intellectual challenge that the hero cannot escape. However, compared to Batman's other themed enemies, Riddler's compulsion is quite flexible, allowing him to commit any crime as long as he can describe it in a riddle or puzzle.
History
Edward Nashton, who later changed his name to Edward Nigma, is the super-villain known as the Riddler. His signature gimmick is committing high-profile crimes, and giving clues or hints to law enforcement. This has made him an enemy of the Batman in Gotham City. The riddles are a compulsive obsession to prove he is smarter than others, and this has made him an occasional patient in Arkham Asylum.
Tumblr media
Origins
Edward Nashton was born into a broken home. His mother was absent and his father was abusive. When Edward was a young boy, he became excited at the idea of winning a puzzle contest at school. To increase his likelihood of winning, Edward sneaked into school during the night and practiced the puzzle until he could solve it with ease. He ended up winning, and was awarded a riddle book as a prize. Since that time, he has mastered puzzles, mind games, and riddles.
Edward was profoundly intelligent and would pass tests with apparent ease, something his father, out of jealousy, couldn't or wouldn't believe; he therefore attributed his success to cheating and started beating on him to keep him 'out of trouble,' or to stop him from lying. Out of the abuse, Edward developed a compulsion he has became known for, he constantly endeavors to tell the truth to prove his innocence. This is where his obsession with riddles comes from. Unfortunately, the abuse is also a main factor that drove him mad and to a life of crime.
Tumblr media
The Riddler
When Edward got older, he left home and became a carnival performer, using his skills to cheat carnival-goers out of their money. But this was not enough for him. He longed for something more, and became the Riddler, at the same time changing his name to Edward Nigma, picking The Batman as an adversary, as he believes him to be an intelligent and more-than-worthy opponent.
Starting out as a simple informant and criminal profiler for the underworld of Gotham City, as well as for Batman, the Riddler slowly became more of a villain to Batman. It wasn't long before he became a main adversary to the Caped Crusader, constantly testing his analytical abilities to their limits.
Tumblr media
The Long Halloween
During the events of the Long Halloween the Riddler became an informant for Gotham city crime lord Carmine Falcone. When a serial killer known as Holiday began targeting Falcone's associates, Carmine hired the Riddler to discover the killer's identity. However, the Riddler's results displeased Falcone, and the gangster even laughed at him, when the Riddler suggested that Carmine himself was the killer. The Riddler later became one of Holiday's victims, but much to the Riddler's confusion, was purposely left unharmed. A year later, Batman consulted Riddler about a second Holiday killer called Hangman.
Tumblr media
Career Criminal
Over the years, the Riddler would earn his living through various heists and robberies, working his way up the criminal food chain, eventually even securing himself a couple of henchwomen to do his bidding. Later in his career, after his exploits have been well established for some time, he attempts a heist in Manchester, Alabama, only to be thwarted by Impulse, whose problem-solving skills he severely underestimates after Impulse initially confuses him for The Question.
Tumblr media
Dark Knight, Dark City
The Riddler becomes darker and more bloodthirsty when he takes an interest in occult rituals. He discovers instructions on how to tame a bat daemon called Barbatos, originally summoned by Thomas Jefferson. The Riddler leads Batman around the city with a series of riddles, designed to prepare Batman as a demonic sacrifice. To make Batman chase him, he kidnaps four babies. He tricks Batman into kissing a hanged man through CPR, and covers him in blood at a transfusion center. The next step is a dance with the dead, accomplished through zombie robots, then slaying a dog with silver. He forces Batman to slit the throat of an unbaptized child, by leaving him with a baby who needs an emergency tracheotomy. Finally he makes Batman do an acrobatic dance in front of a goat representing the devil, by attacking him with a flamethrower. Batman is captured and tied to an altar. The Riddler prepares to stab Batman in the heart, but the demon Barbatos intervenes to stop him. The Riddler flees in terror and torches the building, but Batman is able to escape.
Tumblr media
Knightfall
Riddler was back in action, but he was attacked by Bane, who dosed Riddler with Venom. Batman tried to stop Riddler, but he was too strong and Batman was tired. Bane's henchmen shot Riddler under Bane's command leaving Riddler badly injured.
His stay in Arkham was short lived as Bane released all the inmates as a plan to eliminate Batman. Riddler escaped as well, gathered his old gang and started planning his next move. Riddler sent a letter to the Gotham City Police Department, but they were too busy with all the other criminals from Arkham and Riddler's letters got overlooked in the situation. After a while, his own henchmen got tired of waiting for the police to notice the clues and they ditched Riddler out of the score. On an attempt to be noticed, Riddler went to a live TV broadcast, armed with bombs and took over the show. He delivered his riddles to the audience, but nobody was able to answer them. Riddler was soon stopped by Robin, who watched the TV, learned of his move and arrived at the TV station in no time. The bomb turned out to be fake and Riddler was captured and taken back to Arkham.
Tumblr media
Hush
The Riddler is diagnosed with terminal cancer, so he cures himself by stealing one of Ra's al Ghul's Lazarus Pits. This grants him a temporary clarity, and he finally figures out that Bruce Wayne is Batman. He tries to sell this cure to a rich doctor named Thomas Elliot, whose parents also died of cancer. Elliot hates Bruce Wayne, and they decide to work together to destroy Batman. Elliot becomes the villain Hush, and the Riddler designs an intricate plan. This involves enlisting or manipulating Catwoman, Clayface, Harley Quinn, Huntress, Jason Todd, The Joker, Killer Croc, Poison Ivy, Scarecrow, and Superman. Batman and Nightwing actually fight the Riddler during this time when he robs an armored car. They assume the Riddler is too pathetic to be involved. Hush loses to Batman, and Batman figures out that the Riddler was the mastermind. Batman explains that a riddle everyone knows the answer to is worthless, so he knows the Riddler will keep his secret. Ra's al Ghul will also have his League of Assassins kill the Riddler if they ever discover what happened. Batman punches the Riddler, tells a security guard that he fell, and leaves Arkham Asylum.
After the Hush incident, Riddler escaped from Arkham and sought Poison Ivy's protection from Hush and from the League of Assassins. However, Ivy was equally mad at him after he used her on his "Hush" scheme and she attacked Riddler as soon as he stepped into her lair. Riddler tried to escape, but Ivy wouldn't let him go. Riddler finally gave up and asked Ivy to kill him and finish his pain. However, she refused, leaving Riddler helpless in a catatonic state.
Tumblr media
Downfall and New Start
Later, Elliott reappeared demanding from the Riddler the location of the Lazarus Pit. When Riddler refused to answer, he was brutally beaten. Seeking refuge, the Riddler went to the Joker and the Penguin. He tries to bargain with the Joker for asylum and he agrees but eventually his safety is compromised and he is forced to go on the run again. He asks Poison Ivy for asylum, both of whom remembered his manipulation and the meeting didn't go well. At a loss, the Riddler went into a downward spiral of insanity and became homeless. He eventually was found by a ex-NASA decoder who helped him recover his mind. It is during this time that the Riddler has an induced flashback about his childhood, he comes to the realization of what happened when he was abused and why. He also deduces the reason behind why he has the compulsion he has for riddles.
Using his vast fortune, acquired over many years of crime, he gets minor plastic surgery and extensive tattooing. He covers the majority of his torso with his trademark question mark insignia. He kills the Codebreaker, who has discovered his secret identity and steals a priceless scroll, before Batman can get to it. It was at this time that Riddler starting amassing a huge fortune legally and attacking various heroes to prove his abilities.
During this time, he had a run in with Green Arrow, Arsenal and the Outsiders. The Riddler is up for revenge against his defeat by the Green Arrow and he brutally injures and almost kills the the two archers. If not for the timely arrival of the Outsiders they may have been killed. Before these events, the Riddler was hired to steal artifacts imbued with mystical powers from one of Star City's museums, and then distract the authorities so that the related rituals could be commenced. He sends Team Arrow on a wild goose chase around the City, and then reveals that he has an atomic bomb housed in the stadium where the Star City Rockets play. However, as a side effect of the ritual performed with the artifacts, the city is plunged into complete darkness, and Green Arrow uses this to his advantage, to capture the Riddler.
Tumblr media
Infinite Crisis
The Riddler was with a group of villains attacking the Gotham City Police Department. He later escaped from Arkham Asylum after a worldwide breakout by the Secret Society of Super Villains. He then is along with the Society when they attack Metropolis. He is defeated by the Shining Knight and is struck in the head by the Knight's mace.
Tumblr media
One Year Later
The Riddler was sent into a coma when he was hit in the head by the Shining Knight's mace. When the Riddler awoke a year later, without his obsessive compulsive fixation for riddles but still possesses his great intellect and enormous ego. He also suffers from memory loss forgetting his own name for a while and not remembering that Bruce Wayne is Batman, but he is suspicious. With the Penguin's advice, he was reformed and then became a private investigator at which he legally develops even more of a fortune. He was finally on the right side of the law using his great talents for the good of the people.
He even becomes involved in a ship bound murder mystery alongside Batman, while deducing a part of the mystery, Batman deduces the real reason. In the end they both did there part in solving the crime and have become hostile allies. He is then hired by Bruce Wayne to find a experimental drug stolen from Wayne Enterprises. In the end with the help of a reformed Harley Quinn he gets the drug back and returns it to the rightful owners.
In a run in with Mary Marvel he describes to her how he is reformed, the two then join forces against Clayface, where Edward gets to see up front how twisted and cruel she has become with a great power. He suggests that she gets a mentor or some anger management.
Even Nightwing hired him to find out who was behind recent string of museum robberies, whom he later saves from gang warfare while investigating Penguin's involvement in organized crime. He later deduces that Nightwing is Dick Grayson.
During his time as detective, word about Batman's death started to spread. As crime became more violent in Gotham, he was approached by Penguin who wanted Nigma's service as an investigator to find the new Black Mask that started operating in Gotham. To help his investigation, he recruited Harley Quinn and later Poison Ivy joined their efforts. On this quest, Riddler became the man who helped Quinn, Ivy and Catwoman to become a team.
Fun Facts
In many other realities, the Riddler's birth name is Edward Nigma, Edward Nygma, E. Nigma or even Edward E. Nigma. However, the New Earth Riddler was born Edward Nashton and changed his name to Edward Nigma later in life.
Jim Gordon has mentioned that several Gotham criminals have their own codewords. These are special phrases they can say when they call the GCPD, to distinguish them from prank phone calls. The Riddler chose "Oedipus" as his codeword, because Oedipus solved the riddle of the Sphinx. Gordon remarks that this is strange, because medical records suggest the Riddler hated his own mother. The Riddler's codeword for Batman is "The Hanging Man."
The Riddler's online screen name is "Wizard101." This might be a reference to the game of the same name, which was released the same year as Detective Comics #845, the issue where this username was used.
The Volatile Playrite, Morin Tuniq
Descendant: Sonja Tuniq
Theme:
Tag: The Playrite
A man infamous for his acts of cruelty performed at the slightest of whims, Morin spent his life as a proud subjuggulator. Though he prided himself on being a member of the dark carnival, he never dedicated himself to a particular troupe and chose to keep company with his fellow unbound carnies. They formed a gang whose territory spanned an entire city where they made sure the hemospectrum was very strictly enforced. So tight were their standards them even anonymity would often see trolls slaughtered.
Morin was often considered highly unapproachable because of the unpredictability of his two personalities. Both were malicious and cruel, though their methods greatly differed. One was chaotic and excessively violent (Which he named Brash), and the other was calm in his sadism and more prone to methodical torture (Which he named Stoic). He could switch between the two at will and would often force those he planned to kill to try to guess which persona was active. Naturally, there was no winning this game as even if his victim guessed correctly, he would merely switch and claim they were mistaken.
One night, while patrolling the territory around their city in the surrounding woods, Morin’s gang came across a young greenblooded girl who seemed to only go by her surname, Shiaka. Morin was instantly taken with her and demanded she become his new personal hivemaid under threat of death, to which she grudgingly agreed. Soon after, both Brash and Stoic developed intense feelings for her: Brash being flushed, and Stoic being pale. However, seeing as she was his slave and he was considered someone of high regard, he kept their relations secret for fear that the scandal of quadding with a slave would ruin his reputation.
When the hivemaid didn’t return his affection, he refused to accept it and forced himself on her. He would use his chucklevoodoo to manipulate her emotions into what he wanted, and he would routinely abuse her and force her to submit to his desires. Attempts to escape were met with brutal punishments, and her mind was horribly fractured and broken from the constant use of chucklevoodoo.
Eventually rumors of his relations with her began to form, and out of desperation to save face he sought to kill her. However, his obsession and violently possessive feelings for her prevented him from doing the deed himself, so he hired a known assassin to murder her. He took credit for the murder and had the assassin framed for the murder of an heiress to force her into exile so she could never reveal the truth.
Soon after the hivemaid’s murder, he began to unravel. He claimed that her ghost was haunting him, and he would have hallucinations of her constantly. Even as he slept, he would see her in his dreams taunting him, shaming him for what he’d done. Unable to find peace, he eventually went mad, which culminated in him not only murdering several of his gang members, but nearly the entire population of the city which they overlooked. His rampage was only stopped by interference from legislacerators, who saw him hanged.
Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury
"'But I think it uses Death as a threat. Death doesn't exist. It never did, it never will. But we've drawn so many pictures of it, so many years, trying to pin it down, comprehend it, we've got to thinking of it as an entity, strangely alive and greedy. All it is, however, is a stopped watch, a loss, an end, a darkness. Nothing. And the carnival wisely knows we're more afraid of Nothing than we are of Something. You can fight Something. But ... Nothing? Where do you hit it?'"
Year Read: 2004, 2006, 2018
Rating: 5/5
Context: This has long been my favorite Bradbury book, and it's spawned a love of circus and magician stories that seems doomed to never be satisfied--because what else could ever compare to the magic of this book? I discovered it in high school shortly after reading Fahrenheit 451 for English class, and I read it religiously alongside Flowers in the Attic and The Last Vampire (seemingly the only thing in common is the horror element). I got a fancy new edition for Christmas last year that includes some early drafts and critical commentary, and I managed to save it for this year's Halloween reading list. It's the perfect October novel. Trigger warnings: death, stitches, body horror.
About: It's after midnight in October when the carnival arrives in Green Town, Illinois. Best friends Will Halloway and Jim Nightshade, one born a minute before midnight on Halloween and one born a minute after, have never met a carnival that came so late in the year. And it's no ordinary carnival. At first glance, Cooger & Dark's Pandemonium Shadow Show is the average carnival with rides, cotton candy, and sideshow freaks. But the House of Mirrors is an ocean of rippling glass that threatens to show men their greatest fears, the carousel holds a sinister secret, and the answered dreams offered by Cooger & Dark may really be the stuff of nightmares.
Thoughts: Bradbury's prose is incomparable. I've never met another writer with his flair for imagery, for turning a phrase just so and making it something new, and for tapping into what seem like eternal truths with his sentences. This is the writer that made me see what writing could be, who taught me how to write description, and who made me want to be a writer. His words have a way of brushing the dust off those innermost parts of people--youth, dreams, love, magic--and bringing them back to life. It's no wonder that I was obsessed with him as a teenager and that, even as an adult, I never really got over it. I may have newer, more current author obsessions, but all it takes is cracking a Bradbury book to remind me why I love language.
The text is heavy with imagery, perhaps even a little above Bradbury's usual descriptions, and that's not going to work for every reader. Some people will accuse his prose of being "purple", which is one of my least favorite complaints ever in reviews--but of course it is, because I learned to love twisting metaphor and vivid imagery heaped by the pile at the knee of writers like Bradbury. While I know I flew through this novel many times in high school, I found myself wanting to slow down and let the pages sink in this time around. There's so much atmosphere to take in. We can hear the calliope, smell the crisp autumn air, and feel the cool thrill of fear as our heroes are threatened.
Will and Jim were some of my first literary friends, and they're among Bradbury's most well-developed characters. He doesn't often linger on character the way he does moral or description, but that's not the case in Something Wicked. Will and Jim are mainly defined by their contrast to each other: light and shadow, easy and hard, content and restless, but Bradbury walks a thin line on making them good and evil. There's nothing so black and white about their characters; this book is about the possibility of evil, and none of the characters are exempt from temptation. Will's father, Charles Halloway, the aging janitor/librarian, could so easily fall into cliches as well, but he doesn't. He's as flawed and fragile as the children, but he's also the model of strength and goodness they need to fight back against the carnival.
No carnival in literary history has ever compared to Cooger & Dark's Pandemonium Shadow Show (a delightful name if there ever was one). Bradbury's prose brings its darkness to life like no other, and it's populated by some truly terrifying characters. I would hesitate to call this a horror novel (perhaps dark fantasy or coming of age), but it has some of the most frightening scenes I've ever encountered. Mr. Dark, the Illustrated Man, is a menacing, calculating villain with a menagerie of writhing tattoos and perfectly timed dramatics (as all magicians should be). There are a number of other spooky minor characters, but the Dust Witch is the true horror of the story. Eyes stitched shut, clawed fingers carving out destinies in the air, she's capable of stopping hearts with mere suggestion. (There are some misuses of the word "gypsy" in her case, so be aware.)
The second half of the plot is especially tense as our heroes are still fumbling to find suitable weapons against the carnival's evil. It's hard to see how two boys and an old man can fight against decades, possibly centuries, of wickedness, but Bradbury's solutions are as simple as they are universal. The novel's conclusion could have easily passed into cliche, but it still feels as fresh and surprising on a re-read as it did the first time I read it. Bradbury proves himself as skilled at clever plotting as he is everything else. It's still one of my favorite novels, and every other circus story pales in comparison.
As far as the critical commentary goes in my new edition, it’s a little sparse to be entirely satisfying. Truth be told, I would probably read an entire book dedicated to that stuff. Reading about the long process of turning this into a novel and some of Bradbury’s early drafts where Will was the narrator was fascinating (and I’m glad he ultimately went with third person narration). There are also a few excerpts of other authors on Bradbury that I may have to look into, although Stephen King’s is especially snobbish. His reduction of the characters to mere archetypes is more of a comment on his own cynicism than the novel itself. Of course, it’s possible to approach the novel that way, but one would risk missing the point.
10 Best Carnival Row Characters | ScreenRant
One of the best new shows right now is Carnival Row. If you got hooked on the first season, which released over Labor Day weekend, then it may just be your latest genre obsession to fill the void left behind by Game of Thrones. The dark fantasy series follows the conflicts between Humanity and the Fae.
Related: 5 Best & Worst Episodes Of Game Of Thrones (According To IMDb)
Its issues of immigration and politics are very topical to the current landscape. The series is led by Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne but full of vibrant side characters too. Amazon has already renewed it for a second season. We're taking a look at the ten best characters on the show so far.
10 Darius
Tumblr media
Darius is one of Philo's only real friends outside of the relationships he's made with Vignette and Tourmaline. They fought together in the war and Philo remained by Darisus's side even after he had been bitten and changed into a werewolf. In return, Darius kept Philo's secret about him being half-fae. He could smell it on him ever since the change.
At present, we know Darius is being held in a cell but now that Philo's true nature has been revealed, it's not clear what will happen to Darius moving forward. Considering what a great character he is and how much story they can still tell with him, hopefully, he sticks around.
9 Constable Berwick
Tumblr media
Constable Berwick is Philo's faithful partner while he works as Inspector. He doesn't get much development or even many lines yet he's always present and does his diligence to aide Philo in any way he can. When Philo gets thrown in a jail cell, Berwick is the only one to believe Philo is innocent.
He comes to warn Philo about the plans Dombey has for him to ensure he doesn't wind up dead. It would be fun to see Berwick become more of an ally moving forward, especially if he became something of a mole inside the police force in season two.
8 Sophie Longerbane
Tumblr media
Sophie Longerbane is the daughter of the Chancellor's opposition, Ritter Longerbane. She is played with graceful finesse and cunning by actress Caroline Ford. It is Sophie who technically kickstarts the events of the series by writing a blackmail letter supposedly from Aisling and sending it to the Chancellor.
Piety discovers it and begins her murderous rampage. Sophie's goal is to create chaos because chaos breeds opportunity. She's sort of like the Cersei Lannister of Carnival Row, incest included, since she willingly starts an intimate relationship with her half-brother and by season's end may even be marrying him.
7 Piety Breakspear
Tumblr media
Piety is the main antagonist of season one. She creates a Darkasher after discovering that her husband has a secret illicit half-fae son that could threaten the very prophecy she has bid her entire future on. Piety fiercely believes that her son, Jonah, is destined for greatness as foretold by a faun witch.
Philo's very existence threatens Jonah's future and his potential ascension to power. We find out she is the one responsible for all the murders on the Row. Luckily, Vignette and Philo are able to stop her and her Darkasher before she succeeds in finishing her evil plot. Indira Varma plays Piety and she is phenomenal in the role. Piety makes for a wicked and entertaining antagonist.
6 Absalom Breakspear
Tumblr media
Played by professional and respected actor Jared Harris, it's impossible to imagine a world where Absalom doesn't wind up on this list. His character development doesn't begin or make sense until towards the end of the season, but he's a genuinely good man who doesn't hate fae like most other humans.
He is revealed to be Philo's birth father and is deeply saddened by his mother's death and the fact he never got to know his son. Absalom even does his best to get Vignette freed and pardoned so that she and his son can leave the Burgue forever and be happy together. It's a shame he died so soon.
5 Imogen Spurnrose
Tumblr media
Imogen is not a likable character at first. Her cruelty and distaste towards fae and particularly Mr. Agreus doesn't endear anyone. But over time, she and Agreus fall for one another and embark on an unconventional romance.
Played by accomplished actress Tamzin Merchant, Imogen quickly becomes one of the characters on the show that is the most fun to watch. By season's end, she and Mr. Agreus escape on a ship. In season two, we should see how their journey truly begins as they attempt to escape the wrath of Imogen's vengeful brother Ezra.
4 Agreus Astrayon
Tumblr media
Mr. Agreus is a wealthy faun that moves into the house across the street from the Spurnrose residence. Initially, Imogen Spurnrose detests the fact a faun is living in high society. She ignores him, treats him with disdain, and hopes he'll leave. But then when she and her brother need money, they come to a deal for Mr. Agreus to invest in their business while Imogen helps him find a place with her inner circle.
Agreus is a strong willed man. Despite being a faun and aware of discrimination, he doesn't let people talk down to him. He's cheeky and has a dry wit that attracts Imogen after a while.
3 Rycroft Philostrate
Tumblr media
Orlando Bloom plays the leading character in the series, Inspector Rycroft Philostrate. Philo's story is the one we are asked to get most invested in as we slowly begin to learn the truth about the murders being perpetrated by the mysterious and foreboding Darkasher. It turns out the link all the dead share is none other than their involvement in Philo's life.
RELATED: The Lord Of The Rings: 10 Facts About Frodo They Leave Out In The Movies
Along with the core series mystery, the first season also follows Philo's journey to understanding who he is, coming to terms with his long-held secret, and the deep love he holds for Vignette after everything they've been through.
2 Vignette Stonemoss
Tumblr media
Cara Delevingne delivers a surprisingly subdued and heartfelt performance as the brave and fierce Vignette Stonemoss: a fairy who fled from Tirnanoc after the Pact took over. From the very beginning, Vignette is hard to ignore, given her willingness to help her own kind and try to save them from becoming victims to the Pact's cruelty.
She is the main female lead of the show although surprisingly, her storyline doesn't wind up being as central as Philo's is. Come season two, Vignette should get more of a focus seeing as she and all the other fae are now trapped on the Row.
1 Tourmaline Larou
Tumblr media
Tourmaline may not be one of the leading characters, but she is still a significant part of the series. As Vignette's best friend and former lover, the blue-haired pixie is incredibly bubbly and hilarious. It's impossible not to be charmed by her, and she stole everyone's heart by the end of the first episode.
She still holds a torch for Vignette, and they even share a steamy kiss at one point in the season. For now, it looks like Vignette and Philo are getting back together but is it possible that Tourmaline could still be a viable romantic rival come season two? If not, hopefully, she gets a fantastic new love interest of her own.
Can you please do odd numbers, if that isn't too much for Mark x MC for the OTP questions?
Sure not a problem anon! They are one of my underrated ships, so I’m more than happy to oblige!1. Who is the early bird/ Who is the night owl? MC is the night owl because she spends a lot of night researching and coming up with ideas for her lifestyle blog. Mark’s usually the early bird because he likes to get ready for work at Zamble (since his day starts earlier than hers), and still have enough time to make breakfast and leaving a plate for MC.3. Who hogs the cover/ Who loves to cuddle?MC hogs the covers because she likes to wrap herself in an almost cocoon when Mark isn’t trying to cuddle. Mark’s the cuddler in the relationship and gets a little heartbroken every time MC hogs the covers instead of snuggling by his side.5. Who usually has nightmares? Answered in another askMC does. Usually when it’s been an off night for her, she dreams some particularly dark stuff about her past. She often curls up to Mark subconsciously when it happens and that’s how he typically knows she’s having a bad dream.7. Who sweats the small stuff? They both do. MC likes to worry about details no matter how small, especially when it comes to work. Mark is more worried about the small stuff when it comes to their relationship; whenever MC has a long day and doesn’t want to talk about it (for instance). 9. Who makes the coffee (or tea)? Since Mark is usually the first to be up in the morning he makes the coffee and leaves her favorite for her before leaving out the front door.11. Who likes horror movies/ Who likes romance movies? MC likes both, she prefers horror slightly over romance movies which no one really knows except her closest friends. Mark definitely prefers romance; he’ll never admit to being scared after watching a horror movie but MC knows the telltale signs.13. Who is considered the scaredy cat? Mark is but in a I’m-not-scared-you’re-scared way, where he tries reverse psychology on MC, but it doesn’t work. Nearly all the time.15. Who is scared of the dark? Answered in another askMC is petrified of the dark. Bad experiences as a child lead to her never getting over it. (i.e.Her brother used to scare her constantly at night). She keeps a night light on by her side of the bed, and Mark usually turns it off by the time she’s fallen asleep.17. Who works/ Who stays at home? They both work out of the home. MC runs her own successful lifestyle blog and when Mark isn’t at Zamble he’s meeting with big companies in discussing new mobile apps to develop under a joint partnership. 19. Who loves to call the other one cute names? They both like to call each other cute pet names. Their friends think it’s cheesy and down right nauseating (especially Sereena) but they can’t help it.21. Who has an obsession (over anything)? MC has compulsive tendencies to obsess over pretty much anything. She likes having control and plans her days/nights down to the last minuscule detail. If something doesn’t sync with her plans (and that’s likely to happen), she obsesses over that too.23. Who asks who out on the first date? MC is bold but Mark isn’t. He’s always been comfortable with admiring from a far and staying away for the sake of friendship. MC wasn’t and confessed her feelings to him when she realized things wouldn’t work out with her and Ben because of her feelings for Mark (sorry Ben).25. Who wears the other ones clothes? (Answered in another ask)MC grabs Mark’s shirts when she has an early morning start and she likes wearing them while making breakfast. She also likes to steal his workout sweats because she thinks they’re extremely comfortable to lounge in.27. Who takes a long shower/ Who sings in the shower? Mark likes long showers in the morning to think. MC likes to be in and out quickly while daylight’s still burning and catches herself humming under her breath to whatever catchy song she’s listened to at least a dozen times on the radio.29. Who is the better cook? Neither, because they don’t spend a lot of time at home, let alone have time to become better at cooking. They spend far more time out than inside their home. Whether alone or with their friends - eating out is a habit they have no intention breaking any time soon.31. Who is more affectionate? MC is more affectionate in public only because Mark doesn’t really like PDA. She typically does make the first move, teasing him before he finally gives in. She can’t help it when she sees his adorable, goofy grin. 33. Who would wear “not guilty” t-shirt/ Who would wear “sin” t-shirt?Mark would definitely wear the “not guilty” t-shirt.  He typically goes along with whatever MC plans which gives her the crown of wearing the ‘sin’ t-shirt.35. Who goes overboard on the holidays? (Answered in another ask)Definitely MC. She’s a people person by nature, plus she likes having things organized. She’s usually writing endless lists of stuff they’ll need weeks before any holiday events can even occur. Mark leaves her to it and whenever he does offer to help, she thinks it’s sweet but ultimately ends up taking over anyway. 37. Height difference or age difference? Height difference. Since they’ve known each other since freshman year, they’re about the same age - save MC being a few months older. There is a three inch height difference between them that pretty much disappears whenever MC wears heels (which is often).39. Who buys cereal for the prize inside? Mark does because he has a soft spot for toys. He does it in secret though and MC often wonders why he buys a particular brand of cereal instead of the Special K or Honeycombs. She hasn’t figured out it’s for this specific reason yet. Heavy risk, but the prize.41. Who cries during sad movies? Mark does, usually MC can hold it together long enough until nearly the very end before her dam has broken too. Mercifully by then she’s stopped teasing him about how soft he is, only to cry with him.43. Who wins the stuffed animals at the carnival for the other one? Much like ping pong, they are both terrible at winning stuffed animals at carnivals (and because it’s a rare occurrence, it isn’t as if they can practice it). Usually, they leave that area with only their dignity barely in tact.45. Who is more likely to get drunk? (Answered in another ask)MC. She loves shots, and shots + Mark =‘s a memorable night. Mark sticks to a couple beers because he knows he’ll have to clean up her mess later.47. Who has the more complex coffee order? They both are pretty picky with their orders and every time the local baristas see them strolling inside hand in hand, they roll their eyes up to the ceiling because they know if they make even the slightest mistake, they won’t hesitate to send the order back.49. Who is the driver/ Who is the passenger? MC prefers to be the one driving on the odd chance they aren’t taking the subway. Usually, it’s because she spot parking faster and because Mark prefers to put his feet up on the dash and control the music.Wow this took me awhile, lol! I hope you enjoy it and thanks so much for the ask anon! ✧゚・: *ヽ(◕ヮ◕ヽ)Send me an OTP ask!
Gotham will be wrapping up its third season this June, and as this dark look at the city pre-Batman continues, fans are starting to see the characters develop into their comic counterparts. Poison Ivy has developed from a strange young street urchin (Clare Foley) to a vampy seductress (Maggie Geha) with a plant obsession. Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor) rose from a scrawny lackey to the criminal king of Gotham… and fell, again. Some characters even seem to be developing into totally different comic villains, like Barbara Kean (Erin Richards). Originally assumed to be on the fast track to becoming Barbara Gordon, Kean now looks a lot more like Harley Quinn.
The character who has gone through one of the most marked changes this season, however, is Ed Nygma (Cory Michael Smith). In the most recent episode of the show, ‘How The Riddler Got His Name’, his transformation was complete, and Ed even donned the trademark green suit. But how does his Gotham story compare to the comics?
EDWARD NASHTON’S NOT-SO-SECRET ORIGINS
Although Edward Nigma is also an alias of the Riddler, his childhood name was Edward Nashton. Born into a broken home, Edward was raised by his abusive father, whose violence may have been part of Ed’s growing obsession with telling the truth and proving himself superior. In school, Edward’s teacher set the class a test – to see who would be the fastest to solve a puzzle. Although she meant it as a fun contest with a prize, he became obsessed with winning. The young Edward snuck into the school at night, practising the puzzle until he could solve it in seconds. Obviously, he won the contest, and the prize of a book of riddles. His classmates were unimpressed, however, and bullied him, and his father thought he was a cheat and beat him.
As an adult, Edward continued to be obsessed with riddles, and with the need to be intellectually superior to others. He hated being working class, and hated being looked down on by others. Edward first put his love of tricks to use as a carnival worker, setting up carnival ‘games’ that he rigged to always win. This wasn’t ever enough, however, and he turned to a life of crime, partly for the money, but also to gain notoriety for his complicated plots. He set himself up against the Batman, hoping to prove that he was able to outsmart Gotham’s superhero, although he failed time and time again, he considered the Bat to be a worthy adversary for this intelligence.
GOTHAM’S NYGMA
The Edward Nygma in Gotham, meanwhile, has a very different origin story. The character first appears as the riddle-loving forensic scientist for the GCPD. Although he loves to pose riddles for his colleagues, he is a quiet, unassuming man, who is almost cripplingly shy. Despite this, he is incredibly intelligent, and helps the GCPD immensely.
His development from law-abiding citizen to criminal began when he fell for a girl: Kristen Kringle (Chelsea Spack). The record-keeper at the GCPD, Kringle was also an intelligent and somewhat reserved young woman. When Kringle’s boyfriend became violent toward her, Nygma lost his mind, and ended up killing the officer that she was dating, covering it up and telling her that he must have simply left her. Despite her earlier reticence, the two began dating. Despite their happiness, Nygma’s murder was driving him slowly insane, and he ended up killing Kristen during an argument.
At this point, Nygma gave in to his dark side completely, committing more crimes before he is taken to Arkham Asylum. In Season 3, he is released from Arkham and begins to work for the Penguin, meeting another woman who looks exactly like Kristen. He strikes up another relationship, embracing his darker side and still finding happiness, until the jealous Penguin has his girlfriend killed. Once again, the loss of his love drives Nygma over the edge, and he devises a plan to destroy Penguin, before setting out on a riddle-filled crime spree and naming himself ‘The Riddler’.
COMPARING ORIGINS
While these two stories may seem wildly different, some things remain the same. In both series and comic, the Riddler is brilliantly intelligent, and faces bullying for his brain and his fascination with riddles. In Gotham, Ed is bullied at work, rather than at school, but the basic dynamic between a pre-Riddler Ed and the world remains the same.
Ed’s backstory is also fleshed out more in the show, primarily because it specifically intends to build a new version of the classic Batman villains, while the comics focus on Batman and provide only limited backstory on his enemies. The introduction of his romantic life and his descent into madness is new, although this leads him to the same place in the end: a criminal obsession with riddles and superiority.
Like most of the characters in the show, Riddler’s age is also altered, making him significantly older than Bruce Wayne, and his costume is brought up to date. The deep green suit is far more appropriate to the tone of the show than a question-mark covered green spandex suit, although his question-mark cane could definitely still make an appearance in future. There’s still a way for Nygma to go in the series, too – so we may see even more comic references in future.
Claire Bennet || 22 || Rapid Cellular Regeneration
Open || Taken
Personality Traits:
Stubborn, Independent, Selfish, Bitter, Obsessive
Organization:
Fortis Group
Background:
THEN:
Claire Bennet had a seemingly normal life until her ability manifested in Odessa, Texas when she was only 15 years old. She kept it a secret at first, telling only one person, a boy she used to talk to in the sixth grade named Zach. During one her own ability tests, which Zach usually filmed for her, Claire rescued a man from a burning train. Her act was recognized by local papers but she still kept her secret and didn’t come forward, letting her ex-best friend Jackie take credit instead. When word spread, a serial killer named Sylar went after Jackie, believing she had Claire’s ability of rapid cellular regeneration, in hopes that he could take it for himself.
Right after finding out the truth of her ability, Claire learned who her adoptive parents were: Meredith Gordon, a woman with the ability of pyrokinesis, and her father, Nathan Petrelli, who was New York’s junior Senator. She also learned about Peter Petrelli, her uncle and the man the saved her at homecoming the night Sylar killed Jackie. After rescuing her and learning that they were related, Peter and Claire were almost inseparable in working together as heroes. For a couple months, because of the Company, Claire was forced to hide under a false name with her family.
After homecoming, Sylar continued to stalk Claire until he finally found her home alone one afternoon, where he assaulted her and stole her ability. That same afternoon he also “fixed" her by taking away her ability to feel pain which Claire resented him for as it was the only thing that made her feel human. Claire threw herself into helping others more than ever after this, including taking revenge against Sylar multiple times. It only made her more angry when none of his deaths stuck thanks to her ability. Finally, however, it seemed that he was killed by Nathan and everything could go back to normal.
It wasn’t long before she was forced to drop out of school as a consequence of this lifestyle and ended up getting her GED instead. She was eventually forced into college by Angela and her adoptive father, Noah Bennet. That was where she met Gretchen Berg, who ended up having a crush on Claire while they were roommates. The two hit it off, for the most part, and were friends for a while. Until Claire started becoming more obsessed with her ability and the Sullivan Bros Carnival. Not long after coming into contact with Samuel Sullivan, who nearly killed Claire and her father, along with half of New York just to show the world that there were people with abilities, Claire jumped from the top of a Ferris wheel in the middle of Central Park front of the press and camera’s, revealing Specials/Evos to the world.
NOW:
Since her dive off the Ferris wheel, Claire has been the poster child for Specials, living a life in the spotlight. It wasn’t exactly what she wanted, but at least she doesn’t have to hide who she is anymore. She now attends the Petrelli School for Gifted Individuals, run by her dad and Fortis (the new name for the Company.) At first, everything was fine and just how Claire imagined it, but then other people with abilities started poisoning the new found hope for their kind. Explosions happened at the school, people were killed. The place was getting bad press.
Then, before Claire knew it, she found herself in the middle of a war between Fortis and a man called Flash. He kidnapped Claire and locked her in a safe at the bottom of a lake for 2 months, causing her to develop a fear of the dark and water for a while, but not before restoring some of the memories about Claude that had been pushed back or erased after Noah shot him.
After being rescued and discovering her ability stopped working, Claire met another regenerator named Henry Escott. The two of them hit it off almost immediately, each helping the other with traumas and problems. The two had even started dating before Lucas Fallerman came to the school to try and kill her father. Without thinking, Claire jumped in front of Noah to save him, getting killed in the process. Through the combination of Henry’s blood and the shock of dying again, her ability was full restored and Claire brought back to life several hours later. The only thing different this time is that Claire can feel again.
Until recently, everything was finally almost back to normal. Her ability was working, she was dating a nice man, and Noah was alive. But then Henry left and now Claire is questioning whether or not she’ll be alone forever, and how safe they all are from these people called The Hunters, who are killing off Specials/Evos for sport.
Now that the Hunters are dead or in hiding, the Evovled Human Registration Act (EHRA) is what has Claire scared the most. Peter and Sylar are fighting and the government is at Fortis’ doorstep. How will this end? Was jumping from that Ferris Wheel really a good thing after all?
10 fiction books
Manuel Puig’s Kiss of the Spider Woman (1976)
“Unlike some of the other books we’ve mentioned, Manuel Puig’s Kiss of the Spider Woman [El Beso de la Mujer Araña] (1976) is set firmly in Buenos Aires with a clear sense of temporality. It is a novel, written in dialogue form, about two inmates in an Argentinian prison. Indeed, Kiss of the Spider Woman is composed primarily of dialogue between the two prisoners, Molina and Valentín. The entire narrative takes place in present tense, beginning in media res, in Buenos Aires.
The novel was adapted into a feature film of the same name in 1985, starring William Hurt and Raúl Juliá. While closely following Puig’s novel, the film actually shifts locations from Buenos Aires to a Brazilian prison. William Hurt won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance, and the film itself was nominated for Academy Award for Best Picture.” (blog.bookstellyouwhy)
Ficciones by Jorge Luis Borges, Anthony Kerrigan (translator), Anthony Bonner (translator)
“The seventeen pieces in Ficciones demonstrate the whirlwind of Borges's genius and mirror the precision and potency of his intellect and inventiveness, his piercing irony, his skepticism, and his obsession with fantasy. Borges sends us on a journey into a compelling, bizarre, and profoundly resonant realm; we enter the fearful sphere of Pascal's abyss, the surreal and literal labyrinth of books, and the iconography of eternal return. To enter the worlds in Ficciones is to enter the mind of Jorge Luis Borges, wherein lies Heaven, Hell, and everything else in between.” (goodreads)
 Kiss of the Spider Woman, novel by Manuel Puig, published in 1976 as “El beso de la mujer araña. Mostly consisting of dialogue between two men in an Argentine jail cell, the novel traces the development of their unlikely friendship. Molina is a middle-aged lower-middle-class gay man who passes the long hours in prison by acting out scenes from his favourite movies. Valentín is a young upper-middle-class socialist revolutionary who initially berates Molina for his effeminacy and his lack of political conviction. Sharing the hardships of a six-month prison term, the two eventually forge a strong relationship that becomes sexual. In an ironic role reversal at the end of the novel, Molina dies as a result of his involvement in politics, while Valentín escapes the pain of torture by retreating into a dream world.” (britanica)
The Ministry Of Special Cases by Nathan Englander
The Ministry of Special Cases begins as grotesque comedy and ends as high drama. In this descent towards an ever-increasing horror, which the reader intuits but can't quite make out until the very end, Kaddish takes on the ancient role of the Fool travelling through the hellish landscape that his elders and betters have created, towards a conclusion foretold that he nevertheless strives to avoid. Kaddish's literary kin include Brecht's Mother Courage and Dickens's Lady Dedlock, hero-survivors who try through their wits not to become the victims of an unjust reality and who must pay for their chutzpah with the lives of their dearest. "What is left for a man to think when he was raised for ruin and it comes," Englander writes with exquisite precision. "Kaddish had fought against it, striven always for greatness, and not let any of his endless unbroken string of failures drag him permanently down. Knowing what he knew now, he would have lived better. He'd never once have let himself worry about ending up as he had. A lifetime of fearing it, and yet to find himself ruined still came to Kaddish as a surprise. If there was any wonder left in him, he spent it on this."
Black Novel with Argentines
“Thrilling and dark, this is a novel of obsession and crime—a commentary on the fine line between creativity and insanity. A stark and powerful story that is literary to its core, the novel follows two Argentine writers self-exiled in New York City, one of whom is a murderer, and both of whom are inexplicably driven to lose themselves in the city that never sleeps.”
Imagining Argentina by Lawrence Thornton
“Imagining Argentina is set in the dark days of the late 1970's, when thousands of Argentineans disappeared without a trace into the general's prison cells and torture chambers. When Carlos Ruweda's wife is suddenly taken from him, he discovers a magical gift: In waking dreams, he had clear visions of the fates of "the disappeared." But he cannot "imagine" what has happened to his own wife. Driven to near madness, his mind cannot be taken away: imagination, stories, and the mystical secrets of the human spirit.”
The invention of Morel by Adolfo  Bioy Casares
“Jorge Luis Borges declared The Invention of Morel a masterpiece of plotting, comparable to The Turn of the Screw and Journey to the Center of the Earth. Set on a mysterious island, Bioy's novella is a story of suspense and exploration, as well as a wonderfully unlikely romance, in which every detail is at once crystal clear and deeply mysterious. “
Asleep In The Sun by Adolfo Bioy casares
“Lucio, a normal man in a normal (nosy) city neighborhood with normal problems with his in-laws (ever-present) and job (he lost it) finds he has a new problem on his hands: his beloved wife, Diana. She’s been staying out till all hours of the night and grows more disagreeable by the day. Should Lucio have Diana committed to the Psychiatric Institute, as her friend the dog trainer suggests? Before Lucio can even make up his mind, Diana is carted away by the mysterious head of the institute. Never mind, Diana’s sister, who looks just like Diana—and yet is nothing like her—has moved in. And on the recommendation of the dog trainer, Lucio acquires an adoring German shepherd, also named Diana. Then one glorious day, Diana returns, affectionate and pleasant. She’s been cured!—but have the doctors at the institute gone too far?”
El TÚNEL by Ernesto Sabato
“Infamous for the murder of Maria Iribarne, the artist Juan Pablo Castel is now writing a detailed account of his relationship with the victim from his prison cell: obsessed from the first moment he saw her examining one of his paintings, Castel had become fixated on her over the next months and fantasized over how they might meet again. When he happened upon her one day, a relationship was formed which swiftly convinced him of their mutual love. But Castel's growing paranoia would lead him to destroy the one thing he truly cared about…”
The Dream of Heroes by Adolfo Biosy Casares
At the end of carnival 1927, Emilio Gauna had an experience that he knew was the culmination of his life. The problem is that Gauna can only dimly remember what happened: he was out on the town with his raucous, reckless friends when a masked woman appeared. Several hours later, gasping and horrified, Gauna awoke at the edge of a lake. Three years later, he tries to solve the mystery the only way he knows: by re-creating the same situation and reliving it- despite the warnings of his secret protector, the Sorcerer.
